Ag Class Looking for Donations The A- Central Ag Program is growing again this year. There are nearly forty students enrolled in horticulture classes alone that's nearly 1/3 of the school! Our students in this class will be learning about landscaping, greenhouse production, plant science, gardening and food preservation. Therefore, we need your help securing enough supplies. If you have any canning supplies (jars, lids, bands/rings, etc.) that you are not using we would love to put them to use as we make apple butter and salsa. We will also take any houseplants, cuttings, annuals or perennials you might have as you do you fall yard clean up. Mrs. Waters is on maternity leave but donations can be dropped off to Jan Kirby at the high school. Thank you for your continued support of our students, agriculture and the FFA.

The A-C Central Marching Knights started their marching competition season with a performance at the Rushville Smiles Day parade on Friday Sept. 16 @ 10 AM. AC was one of several bands in the competition including: Large Schools: Camp Point Central, PORTA, Lewistown & Beardstown, and small schools: Payson Seymour, Meredosia Chambersburg, Liberty & AC. It proved to be tough competition with Liberty winning the small class followed by AC. Camp Point Central won the large class. The Marching Knights continued on with a performance on Saturday at the Petersburg Harvest Festival. This non competition parade was a nice outing for the band. The crowd was very receptive and the students had a fun day sharing their talents with the town of Petersburg.
COME OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR MARCHING KNIGHTS! The A-C Central Marching Knights had a wonderful day on September 24th in beautiful downtown Beardstown. The band competed in the annual Beardstown Fall Fun Festival parade which stepped off at 10 am. The Knights won the large band class, best overall and the Diann Hoagland Memorial trophy for drum majors. Other bands in the competition were Astoria, Winchester, VIT, and Schuyler County Middle School. The Marching Knights forge ahead and will travel to Barry IL for the Apple Festival Parade on Saturday Oct. 1 for a 1 PM parade. The band will take on bands from Missouri and Illinois. There is category awards for the drum majors, the color guard and the percussion line. There is a new competition this year for drum lines that was created for the ―fun‖ aspect of drum lines and should be a sight to behold. Come out and cheer on your Marching Knights and have a yummy apple dumpling.

“GO GREEN!” In the line at the store, the cashier told an older woman that she would bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and explained, ―We didn’t have the green thing back in my day.‖ The clerk responded, ―That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment.‖ She was right - our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day. We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right; we didn’t have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed a baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts, wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But the old lady is right: we didn’t have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house—not at TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right; we didn't have the green thing back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isn’t it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn’t have the green thing back then?

Live, Learn and Love Anyone living in Ashland this summer must be aware of how precious life is. We saw a lot of people we hadn’t seen for quite a while as we waited patiently to enter Buchanan Cody Funeral Home. We were surprised or even stunned by a friend or relative that died so unexpectedly. But others passed to the next life after long illnesses. As individuals and as a community we feel the loss[es]. And felt the love and support. Sometimes we have to ask ourselves: ―Are they really dead?‖ We need to ask ourselves: ―Are we really alive—living life as long as we have it—to the fullest?‖ In the earliest book in the Bible, Genesis 1:27, we learn: So God created man {male and female} in his own image [!] Imagine that! Ask: how creative have we been lately? In Genesis 2:7, the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the Breath of Life and man became a living being. It’s what we are all about: to function as living beings. Creative living necessarily involves learning. It is a life long process. Jesus said, as recorded in Matthew 11:29, Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. That simple tip is as useful in our hectic lives today as it was 2,000 years ago. Solomon centuries earlier began his book of proverbs for persons of all ages: (2) for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; (3) for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; (4) for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young — (5) let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance — (6) for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. (7) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Titus understood that kind of lives Solomon and Jesus wanted. His letter 3:14 says, Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order to provide urgent needs and not live unproductive lives. When we do this we are better equipped to do the jobs we were created for; to live for others in word and deed. The Apostle John spends a great deal of his gospel and his letters defining love in 1 John 4:6-8; (6) We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood (7) Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. (8) Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. Reflecting Him we live, we learn, we love. - submitted by John Sheppard -
