The annual A-C PTO Halloween Parade will be held Monday, October 29, 2012, at the Chandlerville Elementary School cafeteria and gym. The evening will start with a meal from 5 - 6:30. Sloppy Joes, Hot Dogs, Chips, Cookies, Tea and Lemonade will be served for $1 or $.50 each. Newborns through adults are encouraged to dress up and compete in the Halloween Parade. Anyone wishing to be in the parade should be in the gym in their respective age category by 6:30 p.m. for judging. The A-C Central Marching Knights will perform at 7 p.m. followed by the parade of costumes. Each age group will receive cash awards from $1 - $4 for different categories - such as scariest, ugliest, cutest, funniest, etc. All participants in the costume parade will receive an award of at least $1.

The hours for Trick-or-Treating will be between 5:00pm and 8:00pm on October 30 and 31 . There will be a question on the November 6, 2012 election ballot concerning electrical aggregation. Aggregation is when a municipality shops for the best rate for its residents as a whole. Ameren is a delivery only company and encourages aggregation. If a customer doesn’t pick a utility, the State of Illinois solicits bids and then bills through Ameren. The question posed to voters will ask whether or not to allow the Village of Ashland to pursue bids on behalf of its residents for the lowest group rate on electricity. If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact one of the Trustees listed below. Election packets are now available at the Municipal Building for those wishing to run for local office during the April 9, 2013 election. Petitions can be circulated from September 25, 2012 until December 24, 2012. Jennifer Smith-Ag Teacher James B “Jamie” Woodrum “Jamie” Woodrum, 25, was fatally injured Sunday, September 23rd, in an accident north of Virginia. He was born November 25th, 1986 in Springfield. The son of Bob and Patricia (Duling) Woodrum. He is survived by his father, of Ashland, a sister, Jessica, of Louisville, KY, an Aunt Pam Schlicht (husband Kim), of Pleasant Plains, two uncles, Steve Woodrum, of Jacksonville, and Brian Duling, of Phoenix, AZ. He was proceeded in death by his mother. Jamie was a 2005 graduate of A-C Central High School, and served with the Illinois Army National Guard for 3 years. He was employed as a carpenter for Lamar-Hagar Construction Co., of Ashland. Cremation rites were accorded.

ATTENTION ASHLAND RESIDENTS Ashland residents should be aware of the dangers of infected mosquitos in our area. There is a great deal of information on the web for your research and to write about this epidemic of infected mosquitos and the symptoms of the illness. It is very serious and should be reported to the community so others can take adequate precautions to protect themselves .
8th Graders Raise Money for “Save the Children” by Emily Duncan, A-C Central Middle School In April and May, some members of the 8th grade class at A-C Central Middle School were inspired by the “Kony 2012” initiative to raise funds to benefit the children of Uganda. Joseph Kony has been accused of ordering the abduction of children to become child soldiers, but has evaded capture. Save the Children is an organization that actively advocates for children’s rights and works to protect children from abuse, exploitation, and violence, including recruitment into armed forces, so the 8th graders felt this would be the best foundation to send donations to. Their goal was to raise $500 to send to Uganda within 5 weeks. Each Wednesday, the entire middle school was encouraged to donate money, and also dress up for “spirit days;” the days included hat day, camo day, twin day, mix & match day, and superhero day. Teachers also got to participate in a “jeans day” and were able to wear jeans if they donated money. If any student donated at least once, they got to participate in a fun block of school Olympic-style events. Activities included tug-of-war, cow chip throwing, and relay races. For students who donated 4 out of 5 days, they additionally were able to participate in a movie day, where they brought in snacks and got to watch a movie in homeroom during school. The 8th graders were so passionate about their cause that they wanted more than just the A-C Central population to be able to donate. They explained their mission to a local church and a few other businesses and succeeded in getting them to accept donations from the public as well! Because of all the team work, our community raised over $800 to send to Save the Children! Briley Eilers, head of the committee of students, recognized her fellow committee members at the end-of-the-year honors assembly at A-C Central. The other committee members were Kendra Escudero, Eric Savage, Cadence Smith, Tanner Force, Lindsey Zuwlaski, Anna Henry, and Alex Brue. Keep your eye out for even more amazing feats they can accomplish through high school!
People can get bitten while working in the yard, cleaning up, and planting. Repellant is good, but reports indicate that DEET is the only reliable poison. Standing water in pool covers, old tires, ditches, and other open receptacles of water should be cleaned up immediately. Symptoms include feeling tired with headaches. It especially bad for anyone over 50. If someone notices these symptoms, please, see your physician immediately.
