DINNER FOR ASHLAND SENIORS Don’t forget the Senior Citizens Dinner sponsored by the Ashland United Methodist Women. It will be on Thursday at noon, the 17th of November, at the St. Augustine Catholic Hall.

This will be the 33rd year we have been able to offer the dinner as a gift to the Seniors of the community. (In most cases this will be Seniors serving Seniors!!) We use a capital “S” on spelling Seniors because they are important to our Village in every way.

Cayla Boensel & Brett Keyes of Springfield announce their engagement. The future bride is a 2000 graduate of Virginia High School and obtained her bachelor degree in Business Administration, Management at Robert Morris University. She is currently employed at Illinois National Bank in Pleasant Plains as a personal banker and retail lender. She is the daughter of Robert & Cathy Boensel of Virginia.

The future groom is a 1998 graduate of A-C Central High School and received his bachelor degree in finance, with a minor in accounting at Culver-Stockton College. He is currently employed as Vice-President at the First National Bank of Barry in Virginia, Illinois. He is the son of Leslie & Cheryl Keyes of Ashland.

A wedding date of June 19, 2012 at Negril, Jamaica is planned with a reception in Springfield, Illinois upon their return as Closed Sundays & Mondays husband & wife.

The middle school students at A-C Central would like to thank Brandt Consolidated for donating bags for the students to use to help protect their new computers. All students are now required to carry the machine in a bag this donation donation made it possible for all students to have one. This cinch sac type of bag is also useful for their calculators, pens, pencils, wireless mouse, and power cords. All of the electronic supplies should be better taken care of, thanks to this generous donation by Brandt. The teachers and students appreciate it!

Ag Class Looking for Donations The A- Central Ag Program is growing again this year. There are nearly forty students enrolled in horticulture classes alone - that's nearly 1/3 of the school! Our students in this class will be learning about landscaping, greenhouse production, plant science, gardening and food preservation. Therefore, we need your help securing enough supplies. If you have any canning supplies (jars, lids, bands/rings, etc.) that you are not using we would love to put them to use as we make apple butter and salsa. We will also take any houseplants, cuttings, annuals or perennials you might have as you do you fall yard clean up. Foundation Created for A-C Central School District #262 On September 15, 201I seven directors were seated on the board of the A-C Central Schools Foundation. The Foundation is classified a SA 501(3Xc) which is a tax-exempt organization under the Internal Revenue Code. Tax exempt status has been granted both for the foundation and its donors. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide financial or other resources in support of the curricular and co-curricular activities of A-C Central Community Unit District #262 and to aid and assist in general the cause of education, extra-curricular and interscholastic programs in the school district. Appointed as officers for the Foundation were Scot Atwood/President, Homer Rieker/Vice-President, Mathew Greer/Treasurer and J.R. Blair as Secretary.

The other board directors seated were V. Todd Jokisch, Milton Edge and Harold Hoagland Jr. An ex-officio member of the board is the current superintendent Rebecca Canty. President Scot Atwood stated, that schools across the nation are faced with increasing demands and diminishing resources and we have seen an explosion in foundations created to assist their local schools. This project has been in the planning stages for the last year and we as a board would like to thank West Central bank of Ashland for Donating $2500.00 to the Foundation. It is because of their generous donation that we were able to get this project off the ground. We are committed to seeing a vibrant and financially secure education environment in the A-C Central School district. We are in the process of contacting alumni, community members, businesses, corporations and anyone who has an interest in helping the school in Ashland and Chandlerville.

A-C Central High School will present two one-act plays on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19.

Show time will be 7:00 pm both nights.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN HIGH SCHOOL WITHOUT REALLY TRYING will show how to make it through the grueling abyss known as high school. A group of student agents infiltrate an assembly to demonstrate their secret tips and tricks. These tips range from legally changing your name to get around roll call to using Tom Cruise to help memorize science terms. High school will never be the same.

SATURDAY MATINEE looks at a movie audience that may be as entertaining as the film itself. This comedy takes place during the waiting period before a movie begins, offering a rare look at the personalities and idiosyncrasies of typical teen audience members. Alice only wants to enjoy the movie alone but someone’s always invading her space.

Kent doesn’t know how much he wants to flirt with his date Maria, and she is shocked at her reactions. Mindy is a social outcast and just ripe for snotty Laura’s tricks. Meanwhile, Ben continues to chow down while two latecomers vie for seats. Everyone will recognize these and other characters in this hilarious slice of life.

Upon researching our statistics over the past two years we realized very few patrons were utlizing the 9:00 am time slot; however there was a great demand for us to stay open past 5:00 PM. We have a lot of youth coming in who may not have WiFi available at home and need this service for their school laptops, as well as group study.

Prairie Skies Public Library District is located in the old Ashland School District and the Pleasant Plains School District (not including the recently annexed territory to Springfield.) We serve a population of 7166. Internet computers are provided to the public, free WIFI, movies, music cd’s, books on cd and MP3 players as well as books, newspapers and magazines. Public use of fax machines, copy machines and printers, with staff asstistance (small fee required). Prairie Skies Public Library has an online card catalog, available from any internet access. Your account can be accessed online, smart phone app and text messaging. You renew your items, check your status, put books on hold, update your personal information and more. We also provide E-books and audio books online for our patrons through Overdrive. It can all be found on our website at http://prairieskieslibrary.com.

AVFD TRAINING October 5th, 2011 The Ashland vol. fire dept. along with Mecca trained on a school bus accident.

The scene was set up on the corner of York and Richard streets. An AC Central school bus was struck in the back by a city dump truck. There were multiple injuries including walking wounded to several DOA’s. The injured were school students, bus driver, and the city worker.

All patients were triaged on the bus, removed by back boards and treated on the scene. This was a joint effort from the AVFD, Mecca’s BLS crews from Ashland, Chandlerville, and Virginia. This is the 2nd time we have trained for a mass causality accident of this size. The fire department would like to thank Ron Cave, Larry Cave, Mike Donnan, and all of the students that helped with our monthly training required by all fire members and BLS crew.

Our FFA members are off and running by competing in judging competitions. On Thursday September 15, six FFA members kicked off the year by traveling to Delevan to participate in the Section 14 Horse Judging Career Development Event. The team did a wonderful job at the contest and received 3rd place. Kayla Farmer also received 3rd place individually. Other team members included Parrish Smith, Rachel Smith, Caseelynn Johnston, Stacey Eskew, and Carmen Savage. We would like to thank Mr. Williams for helping coach the team and Mr. Waters for driving us to the competition.

Everyone had a great time and we were very excited with our success! The livestock judging team consisting of Caseelynn Johnston, Lane Wegs, Jordan Keyes and Zach Fields competed in the Western Illinois University Livestock Judging Career Development Event on October 1st in Macomb. Zach finished 7th overall in the FFA division.

We would like to thank Liz Smith for taking us to this event!

On September 19, Lauren Pfaffe and Carmen Savage attended a Reporter’s Workshop at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield. While there, they learned about the roles a reporter plays and practiced some of these skills. They also enjoyed working with members from around the state and met a lot of new people. The girls hope to bring back what they learned at the workshop to the FFA Chapter at A-C Central.

Forty-one FFA members attended the Prairieland Steam Show in Jacksonville on September 23rd to learn more about the heritage of agriculture in our area. Everyone had a wonderful time and already cannot wait for next year! While there we had a little fun too with activities including riding the train, finding our way through the corn maze, shopping with the vendors, speaking to owners of antique tractors and even riding a bouncy wagon! This was a great activity to kick off our FFA year!

The Cass County Food Pantry extends the love of the community and of Christ to those in need. We provide boxes of food for more than 300 families in the county each month. Summer is a difficult time for the food pantry, donations are low and it can be difficult to find help packing boxes. But, you can help! Watch for food drives and other opportunities to donate to the food pantry, or create your own opportunity. Mark Anthony Reiser Sept 25 1971 - Sept 8 2011 Mark Anthony Reiser, 40, of Safety Harbor, Florida, died in his sleep from a massive heart attack on September 25, 2011, at his home. He was born September 8, 1971, at Fort Gordon, Augusta, Georgia, to Jack and Marilyn (Norris) Reiser. He was preceded in death by his mother Marilyn, and his grandparents, James and Beatrice Norris of Virginia, IL. Mark married Natalie Gutierrez in Florida on April 16, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Natalie; his father and stepmother, Jack and JouAnn (Utley) Reiser, San Antonio; sisters Michelle (Bruce) Motto of Schweinfurt, Germany, Marsha Reiser and Amber Large, both of San Antonio; Grandparents John and Alice (Conkey) Reiser, Ashland; and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mark attended 6th grade in Ashland while he was staying with his grandparents. Perhaps, some of the 40 year olds that attended Ashland Elementary at that time would remember him. He would often visit with Mr. Gregory on his trips back to Ashland.

He received his education from schools in Ashland, IL, San Antonio, Texas, and he was a 1991 graduate from Frankfurt American High School in Frankfurt, Germany. During his last two years in high school in Frankfurt, he was the American High School European Pole Vault Champion.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ponce (LPD-15) and was the Captain’s cook. Upon his discharge from the service, Mark was trained in the Plumbing trade in San Antonio. He moved to Tampa, Florida and was employed by a commercial plumbing company as a Master Plumber.

Mark was an avid Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, and San Antonio Spurs fan. He enjoyed good times with friend and adored his nieces and nephews. His wife Natalie is an elementary school teacher and Mark was a frequent visitor to her classroom. Her students looked forward to his visits and stories. He will be greatly missed by all.

A Celebration of Mark’s life was held September 29 in Safety Harbor. More than 200 of his friends and relatives participated in telling fond memories of Mark throughout the evening. Mark found much joy in his life. His final resting place is in Florida.

Calvin K. Kelly Apr. 22, 924 - Oct 23, 2011 Calvin K. Kelly, 87, of Ashland went to be with the Lord Jesus on Sunday morning, Oct. 23, 2011, at Heritage Health in Jacksonville.

He was born April 22, 1924, in Centuria, Wis.; the son of Glen and Alice Gilliand Kelly. He married Joyce Jeannette Carroll on Sept. 16, 1948, in Plainfield, Iowa, and she survives.

He is also survived by four daughters, Marcia Lynn Abeln (husband, Dennis L.) of Salisbury, Mo., Patsy Carroll Kelly (husband, Dr. Harvey D. Mack) of Jacksonville, Melanie Jean Timmerman (husband, Kevin K.) of LaCrosse, Wis., and Lana Jo Pfaffe (husband, Jeff C.) of Ashland; a son, Timothy Grant Kelly of Ashland; 15 grandchildren, Justin A. Locke and Kendall Locke, both of Glasgow, Mo., Jeremy B. Locke of Salisbury, Mo., Jonathan C. Locke and Jodie Locke, both of Macon, Mo., Shawn Kelly Mack and Patrick Kelly Mack, both of Jacksonville, Maura Jayne Timmerman of Tempe, Ariz., Kelly Vaughn Timmerman of LaCrosse, Wis., Michael F. Copley and Sarah Copley, both of Athens, Haley Catherine Pfaffe and Lauren Alyse Pfaffe, both of Ashland, Grant Thomas Kelly and Erin Leigh Kelly, both of Ashland; 5 great grandchildren, Ainsley, Paisley, Rafe and Emma Locke and Wesley Copley; a brother, Boyd Kelly of Waverly, Iowa; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elaine Kelly; and three brothers, Emery, Alton and Wayne Kelly.

His last few months were spent at the Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville and he leaves many friends and wonderful caregivers there.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Friday, Oct 28, 2011 at the Ashland United Methodist Church in Ashland with burial at Yatesville Cemetery, west of Prentice.

Walter Jesse Boner, Sr. Jan 28, 1947 - Oct 6, 2011 Walter Jesse Boner, Sr., 64, of Ashland, Illinois, died Thursday, October 6, 2011 at his residence.

He was born January 28, 1947, in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Pirdie M. and Ethel M. Mowry Boner.

He is survived by three children, Walter Jesse (Teresa) Boner, Jr. of Glendora, New Jersey, Shelley (Robert) Streahle of Cherry Hills, New Jersey, and Tammy Boner of Glendora, New jersey; six grandchildren, Jesse C. Boner and Abigail Grace Boner, both of Glendora, New Jersey, Robert Michael Streahle, Jr. and Aydan James Streahle, both of Cherry Hills, New Jersey, and Jacob C. Frombach and Jolene Lynne Tohanczyn, both of Glendora new Jersey; two sisters, Barb Farmer of Springfield and Donna Finney of Virigina; and his longtime companion, Judy Reiser of Ashland.

Mr. Boner was a 1965 graduate of Ashland High School. Following graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was a Vietnam War veteran, and had served on the USS Boxer. Following the service, he spent thirty years of his life in Audubon, New Jersey raising his family with his former wife, Marion Wright-Boner. He was a long haul truck driver, retiring from Jevic Transportation in Delran, New Jersey. Following his retirement, he returned to his hometown of Ashland. His best days were spent farming and enjoying time with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren.

Military services and burial will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois. The family will meet friends from 6-7 p.m. Monday at Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland, followed by at 7 p.m. Celebration of Life service. Condolences may be left at www.buchanancody.com

Sarah Jane Smock Dec 15, 1962- Oct 6, 2011 Sarah Jane Smock, 48, of Ashland, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Maple Ridge Care Center in Lincoln, IL. She was born on December 15, 1962 in Fairbury to Raymond and Susie (Moore) Smock.

She is survived by her mother, Susie Smock of Ashland; brother, Richard L. Smock of Springfield; two sisters, Karen (Robert) Harris of Waverly, and Janet S. (Kevin) Hillyer of Petersburg; two nephews, Raymond L. Gray and Harley E. Gray; two nieces, Amber M. Hillyer and Kelly J. Hillyer; and God son, Wyatt Prater.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Sarah was a member of New Beginnings Church in Ashland.

She loved animals and cooking. She collected frog figurines and stuffed animals. Cremation rites have been accorded.

A memorial service was held Saturday, October 8, 2011 at noon at the Atterberry Community Baptist Church.

By the time you read this, Halloween will have come and gone, but I am trusting nevertheless that it won’t be too late to make a connection between pumpkins and following Jesus. Adam Hamilton, pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Kansas has been known to say that we humans are like a pumpkin that is destined to become a jack-o-lantern. If you’re confused, bear with me here just a bit. It will all become clear in a moment.

We all know that there are no perfect pumpkins. The trick is to envision what any given pumpkin can become and make use of its imperfections as you carve your design. Once you get a picture in your mind of what that pumpkin can look like, you draw a face on its surface. But before you can begin the carving, you have to cut the top off first and endure what is surely the messiest and perhaps most unpleasant task of all, which is scooping out all the nasty, smelly, slimy stuff hidden inside. Only then can you begin to carve what you envision into the surface of the pumpkin. If a pumpkin had feelings, the whole process might be pretty painful. But when the carving is finished, you put a light inside to illuminate the pumpkin from within.

That, says Hamilton, is a picture of what God desires for us. His wish is that all that nasty, smelly, slimy stuff inside our hearts...the jealousy and fear and greed and bitterness and all the rest are tossed aside and replaced by the light of Christ. That is his intention for those who follow him. What we were before we met Jesus is to be replaced by something new. As Paul said in his letter to the Colossians, “Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly...you must get rid of all such things -- anger, wrath, malice, slander and abusive language from your mouth.” Paul adds that we who follow Christ have stripped off the old self and have clothed ourselves with the new self, “which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of its creator.”

It can be a painful process. Casting aside all that stuff that has become such an integral part of our lives is never easy. But oh what a glorious thing it is to behold someone who has left behind that which does not belong and whose face now bears the light of Jesus shining out from within. May Jesus shine through his people.

‘Oops!’ And Calculators “Oops” is one of those extraordinary sounds that can stir up joyous laughter and gutwrenching fear all in the same historic movement. For example: During the cold winter night a light rain covers the ground, which soon freezes.

Early the next morning you step out with two dogs eager to do their morning business. As Molly and Honey eagerly yank on their leashes your right t3ennis shoe comes in contact with the slippery ice on the front step… “Oops!” Do you get the idea? (“Oops,” may not have been the only word I used.)

The picture of you collapsed on the ground with two yelping dogs running all around can be quite funny to anyone… but you.

“Oops,” is that kind of sound.

Here is another example. You are inside a hospital operating room, heavily sedated but awake. The surgeon is standing over you issuing instructions to the nurse. *”Scalpel.” “Check.” *”Swab.” “Check.” *”Oops…:” “What the…”

Would you stay calm and serenely ask: “Doctor, did you just say… Oops?” (Right!)

You would more likely say, “Where’s the phone? Get me a lawyer!” Or, how about a good old-fashioned loud scream for…

“Help!!??”

“Oops,” is that kind of word.

Have there been any major “Oops” in your life? Missed opportunities? Ruined relationships? Something said in anger that hurt a dear friend? Perhaps someone has committee and “Oops” against you? A fellow worker stabs you in the back? A trusted friend betrays you?

Maybe your “Oops” was against God. You’ve blown it… big time and now you need help.

The answer could be as close as a calculator. I’m no whiz at arithmetic so a calculator is always nearby. I crunch a series of numbers and the calculator works perfectly but often in haste I hit the wrong key.

“Oops!” (There’s that word again!) No problem… I just push the button marked “C.” You can’t miss it. Mine is marked in red.

Instantly, everything is erased and I can begin again.

God promised to forgive our “Oops” in life the same way. There is a “C” button on

A-C MARCHING KNIGHTS AT IC HOMECOMING The Marching Knights of A-C Central competed in the Illinois College Homecoming Parade on Saturday October 8 at 10AM. The band competed in the 1A class along with Payson Seymour, Meredosia Chambersburg, & VIT. Class 2A had competitors from PORTA, Rushville, Auburn, West Central and Athens and the competition was rounded out with Springfield HS in the 3A class.

There were 2 bands in the non competition class including Jacksonville High School and Johnathon Turner Junior High.

Results of the competition were as follows: Class 3A 1st – Springfield HS Class 2A 1st – PORTA 2nd – Rushville 3rd – Auburn 4th - West Central 5th – Athens

The Marching Knights will continue on the competition trial with a performance in the Quincy October Fest Parade on Oct. 15 and end up the season on Oct. 29 in the Pinckneyville Mardi Gras Parade.

A-C CENTRAL MARCHING KNIGHTS COMPETE IN QUINCY The A-C Central Marching Knights competed in the Quincy Octoberfest Marching Band Invitational on Saturday October 15. The 2 PM parade went straight down Maine Street in Quincy for a beautiful parade. The weather was great and the Marching Knights did a great job.

A-C Central Band Members selected for All-District Honors Several members of the A-C Central Band participated in the audition process in order to be selected as members of the Illinois Music Educators Associations All-District Band. Students prepared several selections as well as basic skills like scales and auditioned for judges on Monday Oct. 10. Results were received that 3 students from the A-C Central band program were selected to participate. Those students are: Allyson Quick on French horn, Kirby Cowman on trumpet and Alex Brue on flute.

The students will prepare several more pieces of music and travel to the campus of WIU in Macomb on Saturday November 5 to rehearse and present a concert to the public along with the best of the best band students in west central Illinois. The will have the privilege of working with well known directors and clinicians.

Congratulations girls – job well done!!!!

Bands in the parade competition included: Canton MO Senior High School, Mark Twain High School from MO, Highland MO Senior HS, El Paso-Gridley IL HS, Scotland County MO R-1 HS, Unity HS, A-C, Quincy Notre Dame HS , Liberty Senior High School . Clark County MO R-1 HS and Troy Buchanon High School from Missouri. Quincy Senior High School and Quincy Junior High School were also participants in the parade as non competing bands.

The A-C Central Marching Knights won a gold trophy for musicianship, the small school category and the Novice division. It was a good day to be a Marching Knight!

November, 2011 Beginning Saturday, November 5th, you will be able to dispose of brush out at the old wells. This is available for Ashland residents only. Disposal hours will be 8:00a.m. to 12:00p.m. the 1st Saturday of every month, weather permitting. The Village will continue to pick up brush for Spring cleaning and in the case of severe weather, but will no longer pick up door to door during regular week days.

The recycle bin will be unavailable the week of November 7 th through 13th for repair - please hold on to your recyclables for that week. We now have a bin through Best Value Recycling for clothing and shoes. Unlike other recycle programs, the clothes you deposit will not be resold, but recycled into fabric products (such as auto upholstery). Proceeds will go to an anti-domestic violence organization.

The November Board Meeting is scheduled for the 9th at 7:00p.m., Village Hall. A reminder; Board Meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00p.m., Village Hall. Meetings are always open to the public and provide a great opportunity to voice your opinion. Six Ashland residents attended the October Board Meeting to discuss the water rate increase and related issues. A Public Meeting to continue this discussion is scheduled for Wednesday, November 16th at 7:00p.m., Village Hall. In a related note, you may pick up a copy of Board Meeting minutes at Village Hall. An Ashland Village web site is also in the works so you can access on-line the minutes, Village ordinances, forms or any other information from Village Hall.

COMFORT DOLLS MADE FOR AFRICAN ORPHANS WITH A.I.D.S. Yacker's & Yarner's, are making Comfort Dolls as a project for our Knit/Crochet group that meet at the library twice a month.

Our children have so much, we tend to forget the less fortunate. These children play with rock and sticks, there are no toys for them to play with.

If you are interested in joining our group, we meet the 1st Thursday of the month at 10:AM and again the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm. If you are not interested in joining, but like to knit/crochet, pick up a pattern at the library and help out by making as many as you want, even 1 will help out.

Shown here are a couple of the dolls that we already sent over to Africa and you can see the joy on the faces of the children that are so use to playing with nothing.

YACKER'S & YARNERS MAKE COMFORT DOLLS AND STOCKING CAPS FOR AFRICAN ORPHANS. Our group of all ladies so far,( men can come to) have been working so hard to make Christmas a little better for some African Orphans. The Nationwide Charity of Comfort Doll Project patterns can be found on the internet. You can knit or crochet them. If you want to be a part of this charity you can stop by the library and pick up a pattern, make one, two or three, or even more and drop them off at the library, or you can come to Yackers & Yarners the first Thursday of the month from 10:00- 12:00, or you can come the second Thursday of the month from 6:00 pm8:00pm. We would love to have you in our group. We are hoping to have at least 100 dolls to send over to Africa.
