Ashland Woman's Club Thanks to all the ladies who purchased Pampered Chef products at the recent Woman's Club fundraiser. If not already picked up, Items will be available at the October 1 meeting. This was a good fundraiser for the club. Besides the money received from the company, Rita Brooks, the consultant, did not accept her program fee. These monies will be used for donations the club makes within the Ashland community

A Trio from the state of Georgia Known as the Gospelaires will be performing at The United Methodist Church on October 12th, 2013 at 7 pm.

The lady in the group is the daughter of Grace Barnes, of Ashland.

The Pleasant Plains Community Club will host the Fall Card Party on Thursday, October 17 from 11am – 3pm. Call Patty at 626-1623 to reserve your table. Open House at the Cass County Food Pantry

The Cass County Food Pantry is hosting an Open House at our NEW locations, 210 S. Main Street, Virginia, IL. This is located just across the street south from our old building.

Join us on Saturday, October 12th, from 10 am to 2 pm. We will be serving cookies and punch, and giving tours of our new facility.

On Thursday, October 17th from 10 am to 4 pm there will be area volunteers, and employees from Casey’s and West Central Bank pumping gas and washing windshields at the Ashland Casey’s Convenience Store located at 103 E. Washington Street. Tips from the first annual “Pumping Gas for Tips” day will help fill the shelves at the Cass county Food Pantry.

You are invited to stop in, buy some gas, get your windshield washed, and help the food pantry on Thursday, October 17th.

CLIFTON “GROUCH” ENGLISH Clifton “Grouch” English, 69, of rural Havana, IL and formerly of Ashland, IL died Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at his residence.

He was born November 19, 1943 in Centertown, KY, the son of Bloomer and Edna Lewis English. He married Elaine Jones.

He is survived by two children, Dana Spengler of Havana and Lonnie English (wife, Marni) of Ashland; six grandchildren; 2 great granddaughters; a sister, Faye; four brothers, Frank, James, Oscar and Clayton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Denny; and his beloved dog, BJ. “Grouch” served with the US Army from 1966-1968. He owned and operated a CB radio shop in Ashland prior to joining Coca-Cola Bottlers in Springfield where he was employed for 22 years. He later owned and operated the Country Gas Station in Ashland before relocating to Fairbanks, Alaska where he worked with United Van Lines for several years prior to his retirement.

He was a member of several Masonic organizations including the Ansar Shrine and their parade unit, “The Jeepsters”. He was a member of Teamsters Local 916 in Springfield and was formerly active with the Ashland Jaycees. An adventurer at heart, “Grouch” dreamed of owning and living on a houseboat and accomplished that feat for two years in St. Charles, MO. He enjoyed flying and owned his own ultralight aircraft.

A lover of nature, “Grouch” enjoyed travel experiences, fishing, camping, and bluegrass music.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services and military honors was held 11:00 am Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland.

Join the Ashland Woman's Club The club meets the first Tuesday of every month (September to May), 1:30 p.m., First Baptist Church hall. A cultural program is followed by light refreshments. Membership is only $10 for the year. The club was organized in 1898, provides scholarships to area students and supports many local organizations and charities. The ladies play bridge and pinochle throughout the year.

Large Number of Citizens Sign School Consolidation Petition In a single week of gathering petitions, supporters of the A-C Central and PORTA school consolidation gathered six times the number of signatures necessary to put the proposal on the March 18, 2014 ballot. State law requires that a minimum of fifty voters in each district sign the petition. The Committee of Ten representing both school districts had hoped to submit double the required number; instead their supporters gathered 231 signatures of registered voters in the A-C Central School District and 403 signatures of PORTA voters.

One of the petition circulators was Rich Edwards, an interested Ashland resident and school consolidation supporter. He collected signatures in Ashland and said, “Consolidation is a ‘no brainer’. It will help our kids, save money and cut taxes. I like all three.”

Committee of Ten member Laura Richard of Chandlerville was elated with the support for the petition, “My friends and I talked to our neighbors and got the necessary signatures after a few hours of knocking on doors. Most people agree consolidation needs to be on the ballot.”

Kevin Thomas from Oakford is a PORTA representative on the Committee of Ten. He circulated the petition and found that people were happy to sign the petition in order to get the issue on the ballot. “I think most people understand that a larger consolidated school would offer students far more academic programs than either of our individual school districts does today. Consolidation would be more efficient and save money.”

On September 4, the Committee of Ten voted 10-0 to petition the Regional Superintendent of Schools to place the consolidation question on the ballot. Because the A-C Central School Board has refused to meet with the Committee of Ten and not agreed to put the question before the voters, the law requires that fifty signatures must be gathered from both school districts. The petition, along with 634 signatures, was submitted to Regional Superintendent Jean Anderson on Monday, September 16. The petition must be approved by the Regional Superintendent and the State Board of Education for it to be put on the March 18, 2014 ballot.

A-C Central has about 450 students and PORTA has 1050. If consolidation is approved by voters in both school districts, the new consolidated district would be formed on July 1, 2015.

A-C Central marching knights marched in the Beardstown Fall Festival parade Saturday September 27 bringing home a first place trophy in their division.

The drum major award was also won by AC again this year. This award is in memory of Diane Hoagland and is presented by her family.

The marching knights began the year at the Petersburg Fall harvest parade on Saturday September 20. They also participated in the Rushville Smiles Day Parade and received a second place trophy.
