LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

cover by Antoni Beristain

How do you forecast for the future when fashion moves so quickly? Trends are coming from every direction. Fashion can be tricky. Predicting the future becomes a matter of taste, luck, and lots of research. One must be fully immersed in the zeitgeist (spirit of the times) to truly understand what the coming years may bring. It is important to look at fashion in a sociological perspective. Cultural attitude creates the need for fashion that reflects the consumer personality. Basics are great, but that’s not what trend forecasts are for.

BRIGHTS

CIVIL DISOBE D I E N C E A little bit punk, a little bit communist. This color story is an ode to a millennial rebellion. Unlike the punks of the 80s and the grunge kids of the 90s, the new wave of antipatriotism includes a global audience: a fun spin on universally basic colors. These hues are often associated with patriotism, and the juxtaposition between the wearer’s attitude and color connotation bring the story to life. Included are two reds: one brighter orange based scarlet and one darker, magenta based crimson. Aqua and ultramarine help to balance the brights. An icy white is used as a pop, and a canary yellow accentuates the reds and blues of this theme.

NEUTRALS

02

U N F E MME Like a boy. Pink is not just for girls anymore. The dusty rose will continue to be a strong player in womens and mens wear as a new neutral. More classic neutrals work as accents and pops instead of being in the spotlight. Pink becomes a neutral in this color story, supported by tan, muted canary, and a brick red. A rich brown with equal parts cool and warm accent the colors and bring them down to earth, while an ochre camel brings out the monochromatic neutrality of the hues.

JEWEL TONES

POS T - BOWI E RIP... A legend. Post recession fashion will be similar to the 1980s rockstar look: spacey, rebellious, and androgynous. Think Grace Jones. Those who are done with minimalism will be going in the opposite direction: full blown maximalism. A dark magenta contrasts with a seafoam emerald to create a punchy color combination. An electric yellow surprisingly brings together the story as the only light hue. A burnt orange and “Prince purple anchors the rest of the colors, especially the pop of crimson.

PASTELS

ELEMEN TARY Scandinavian Design meets the West Coast What happens when you take away too much in the pursuit of minimalism? This approach juxtaposes the previous story: instead of adding on, Elementary is about deconstruction. It’s back to square one. We have become comfortable enough with sustainable basics to venture outside of neutrals. This palette seems icy, but a sage, ecru green, sherbert, and cloud white are all warm hues. Baby blue and pink are reminiscent of past years, but they are cooler and lighter to balance the story.
