BLUE HEAVEN
Dodger Stadium is the third oldest continuously used park in Major League Baseball and one of the sport’s most loved. Opened in 1962, everything about the park, from its materials to its landscaping, reflects the vision of Dodger President Walter O’Malley, who moved the team from Brooklyn in 1957. Located in the picturesque Chavez Ravine overlooking downtown LA and the San Gabriel mountains, the stadium is a symbol of the optimism and energy of its era and the unique aesthetic of the urban American West. In updating Dodger Stadium to meet the needs of 21st century fans, the design team assembled by Janet Marie Smith was committed to maintaining the best of the stadium’s 1960’s heritage. Ashton Design was honored to join DAIQ, Levin & Associates Architects, and Mia Lehrer + Associates on this $100 million project and to accept the challenge of completing what Smith admits “should have been a two-year project” in a seven month off-season. In designing everything from wayfinding signage, murals, and sponsorship ads to team history displays, family-friendly fan areas and concessions, the Ashton Design team made full use of the rich resources of the O’Malley archives— revisiting historic typefaces and the stadium’s original colors and materials. From the outfield scoreboards and advertising signs to the wayfinding directionals, Ashton incorporated and revitalized the classic hexagonal chevron shape so iconic to Dodger Stadium. Inspired by archival sketches found of never built directional stair signs, Ashton Design resurrected these long lost chevron shaped signs, originally intended for 1962. Ashton Design was proud to take part in the effort to bring Dodger Stadium into the 21st century while remaining loyal to the spirit of the team of Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Jackie Robinson.
