In 2012 St. Timothy’s School, an all-girls boarding school in Stevenson, Maryland, embarked on an ambitious campaign, The Campaign for Excellence-Transforming Lives, to create a new state-of-the-art Academic Building. We at Ashton Design were tasked with developing architectural elements that extend St. Timothy’s brand to many details around the new space as well as with creating displays that showcase the school’s achievements and provide educational elements throughout the halls. While the new Academic Building houses the latest technology, it was important to us at Ashton to retain the natural tradition of the building and to keep our designs loyal to St. Timothy’s legacy. Therefore, we embraced the grey stone facade and moongate entrance by adding the school’s name and crest in impressed precast concrete, establishing a sense of prestige. Donors are honored on the exterior of the building with a series of etched and filled aluminum plaques that share inspirational quotations. No detail was left unconsidered for the interior; Ashton designed the medallion and pattern in the terrazzo floor, donor recognition, room identification, and displays. In addition, Ashton presented a solution that was flexible and modular for the room signs. The system was designed so donors can add meaningful quotations, faculty names can easily be switched, and faculty can post memos on the fly using the hidden paper track. The displays include: a timeline of the world with art provided by Princeton Architectural Press, an influential women wall where students can admire names of famous alumnae and female leaders, and numerous school accolades — all laser etched on stained maple. A world class school deserves a world class building. The energy St. Timothy’s has invested in its new Academic Building shows that it values intellectual rigor and the future of its students. Ashton is honored to have developed a great relationship with a client that values good ideas in design.
