Reflections on Business in 2023
Ian Talbot, CEO of Chambers Ireland reflects on the business landscape over the last year, and the resilience and innovation of Irish businesses
ITgives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s InBUSINESS Recognition Awards, and celebrate another year of resilience, success and growth for our members and business in Ireland. Reflecting on the year 2023, it already seems very far away, living as we do in a time of exponential change, in the age of Artificial Intelligence. On the other hand, some things remain unchanged, global political tensions still at play, and worsening with the war in Ukraine still ongoing, and the unspeakable humanitarian crisis playing out in Gaza.
It has been a year marked by a multitude of challenges, both domestically and globally, that tested the mettle of entrepreneurs and corporate leaders alike, as the numbers bore out that Ireland officially entered a recession. However, in a time of full employment it does not feel like the recession of the 1980s or the crash of 2008. It’s a very different beast.
Ireland remains a success as one of the most productive and competitive economies in the world, yet on the flipside we are still dealing with a housing crisis, rising costs of living and disinformation threats as we move into an election cycle.
The housing shortage and under-investment in infrastructure continue to pose a significant challenge for businesses in Ireland. The shortage of affordable housing not only affects employees’ quality of life, but also impacts businesses’ ability to attract and retain talent. Government policies are now having an impact, but we still have a backlog of several years of under-investment to make up for.
Here at Chambers Ireland, we believe that communities and business are two critical elements that will drive Ireland towards a stronger and more resilient future.

face of unprecedented challenges which continue to evolve in the global and geopolitical landscape.
The Awards are more than just a celebration of success; they are a testament to the power of collaboration, vision, and perseverance in a world that is constantly throwing curveballs to the business community and its leaders.
PLANNING FOR GROWTH
Particularly in light of global challenges, the surplus shown in the 2023 Exchequer Returns indicates much to be positive about for the Irish economy. Record levels of employment and the extraordinary turnaround in our economy since the dark days of 2008 – 2010 give grounds for cautious optimism this year, in spite of ongoing wars, new threats to global trade and several important elections globally.
As a small, open, trading economy Ireland cannot isolate itself from potential impacts of these and other events and, at the same time, we must also plan for future growth in our economy and population. Government must therefore be ambitious and retain focus on improving productivity and competitiveness, particularly of indigenous companies, and increased supports should be available to SMEs to help them meet new legislative obligations. There also needs to be continued emphasis on housing, and increased investment in public services and the development of infrastructure in accordance with the National Development Plan and our obligations under the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In order for businesses to capitalise on opportunities, the demand for skilled professionals must be met. Our members are struggling to find people to work as our country has been in full employment for years – 95,000 people joined the workforce in Ireland last year and the unemployment rate has remained flat.
Training and upskilling is vital to create the workforce of the future. We need to be sure that a mismatch between the skills required by businesses and those possessed by the available workforce do not hinder our growth potential, particularly in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and renewable energy. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach, including investment in education and training programs, attracting international talent, and upskilling the existing workforce, to ensure a sustainable talent pipeline for future growth.
LOOKING AHEAD
Looking ahead to the remainder of this year, Irish businesses stand poised to seize new opportunities while addressing ongoing challenges. Ireland’s reputation as a hub for innovation and business remains strong. With the right strategies in place, Irish companies can tap into emerging markets, capitalise on digital transformation, and strengthen their competitive edge. Collaboration and cooperation within the business community will be essential in finding innovative solutions to global challenges. By working together, businesses can create an

You may not all be aware of the Referendum on the same day to approve Ireland joining the EU’s Unified Patent Court, where a “yes” vote is very important for business innovation. Above all we ask you to encourage and facilitate your colleagues to vote –understanding of and strengthening our democracy has never seemed more important in our lifetime.

Amazon in Ireland: Fostering Inclusivity and Sustainability

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has become a transformative force in Ireland’s economic landscape, as highlighted by a recent study conducted by Indecon International Economic Consultants. This study sheds light on the multifaceted impact of AWS investments in data centres, showcasing a ripple effect that spans across job creation, education, local businesses, and environmental sustainability.
Since 2012, AWS has increased economic output in Ireland by over €11.4 billion. Through direct employment and collaboration with suppliers and subcontractors, AWS sustains an average of over 10,000 jobs annually. Moreover, the construction, maintenance, and operation of data centres has led to the creation of more than 2,900 indirect roles, fostering a robust employment ecosystem.
ENSURING OPPORTUNITY
A key aspect of AWS’s impact in Ireland lies in its commitment to an inclusive approach to skills development and education. With a vision to create inspirational retail destinations devoted to home, leisure and food, the team at Arboretum strive to create havens of escape for their customers—places where families can go to connect with each other and soak up inspiration for their home environment. Arboretum currently has three very different locations, each with their own personality: from where they started out in Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow; to the impressive National Garden Exhibition Centre, Kilquade, Co Wicklow; and the Arboretum ‘Urban Green’ at Chapters Book store Parnell Street.
GREEN DEVELOPMENT
The business, established in 1977 in the back garden of the family home by matriarch Rachel Doyle, is now headed up by her two sons, CEO Barry and CCO Fergal. The brought nonexecutive directors, which prepared
them to bring the business to the next level, of which the latest step is a €4.5m development and expansion of the Arboretum Kilquade site, which encompasses The National Garden Exhibition Centre. The development has been built with sustainable technology solutions to maximise energy potential and water use. A rainwater harvesting system is used to water plants in the garden centre while solar panels will generate renewable electricity.
The business also made forays into the city centre, with the Urban Green retail space upstairs in Chapters bookshop in Dublin, targeting a new market of youthful urbanites who may not necessarily have gardens, but are keen to bring some green into their lives with apartment-friendly houseplants.
FAMILY TO FAMILY
As a family-run business Arboretum focuses on creating long-lasting, meaningful relationships with
their customers, and passing on the passion and commitment of the Arboretum family to every member of the team, even as the company grows and expands across multiple sites. After four decades the business has grown from a small garden centre to employing over 170 people, yet the company culture and customer focus instilled by Rachel Doyle remain as strong as ever.
Arboretum has built its strategy across the five pillars of communication, commitment, reputation, customer service and leadership, establishing best practice in every area. To maintain the strong customer service focus they operate what they term “an Arboretum Academy” delivered by the operations manager and some of the senior team, empowering the senior team to coach down throughout the business.

Bord na Móna’s Accelerate Green Programme is helping rising businesses from across Ireland that are innovating in the sustainable climate solutions space
Bord na Móna’s Accelerate Green Programme is a transformative accelerator programme developed to help rising businesses from across Ireland that are innovating in the sustainable climate solutions space and are hoping to secure investment and scale operations further in Ireland and internationally. Since its inception in 2022, Bord na Móna has committed a €5 million investment in Accelerate Green to ensure its continued rollout and positive impact on budding green innovators across the country until 2025. The programme is also partially supported with funding through the Bord na Móna led and EU-funded LIFE Integrated Project Peatlands and People, an initiative that supports Ireland’s move towards becoming carbon neutral and environmentally sustainable.
GREEN MISSION
Last year, Bord na Móna concluded its full transition from a traditional peat business to a climate solutions company. Today it is entirely committed to the green phase of its own business journey and has been for many years, delivering renewable energy (including on- and offshore wind, solar, green hydrogen, biomass), sustainable waste management and recycling, peatlands restoration, biodiversity and the development of new low carbon enterprises. Through the continued expansion of Bord na Móna’s climate solutions and renewable energy portfolio, it hopes to support Ireland in achieving its ambitious renewable energy
requirements by 2030, and net zero emissions by 2050.
These ambitious goals will only be met by combining efforts as a nation; the growth and support of energyconscious and environmentally sustainable companies will play a huge role in this regard. To this end, Bord na Móna is committed via the Accelerate Green Programme to helping emerging innovators in the sustainability space across Ireland to grow and thrive. 2023 COHORT
In 2023, Bord na Móna selected a standout group of green innovators to join the Accelerate Green Programme following its comprehensive application and shortlisting phases. The eight chosen businesses last year included NanobOx, Hibra Design, HUB360, HaPPE Earth, Superfy, NEG8 Carbon, EC Charging, and CW Applied
Technology. From direct air carbon capture technology, and medical grade compostables for Ireland’s healthcare system, to water treatment technology using nanobubbles, the 2023 cohort of businesses are currently pioneering some of Ireland’s newest sustainable innovations and creating unique climate focused solutions for a variety of industries in Ireland and internationally. The Accelerate Green programme equipped these participating businesses with the practical skills, insights and expertise to take their respective companies to the next level and fuel their scaling journeys via a five-month series of immersive learning sessions and mentoring workshops.
Since its launch, 25 businesses have participated in Accelerate Green which is currently in its third year of rollout. After completing the programme, many of the business alumni have reported continued growth and success on their respective business journeys, with 80% expanding their workforce and the average revenue growth among businesses standing at 150%.

DOUBLING LENDING
A significant milestone for the company last year was breaking the €1bn in advances to businesses across the Irish market. Flogas Enterprise Solutions supply renewable power, natural gas, biomethane and energy services to large energy users in Ireland.
In 2012, Flogas Enterprise established a dedicated renewables team and currently has a portfolio of over 400 MW of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with independent developers across the Republic and Northern Ireland.
PURCHASING POWER
Flogas Enterprise provides a route to market for renewable electricity and biomethane projects by providing PPAs and, more recently, corporate PPAs, giving customers direct contractual access to renewable energy facilities.
Demand for renewable CPPAs is growing rapidly in Ireland over the last few years as companies look to reduce their carbon footprint and seek budget certainty. Flogas has a deep understanding of the complexities of renewable energy contracting and has extensive experience working with the various stakeholders to deliver a route to market for renewable energy projects and large energy users.
Flogas guides customers through the process, aiding in project identification and deal origination, seamlessly integrating PPAs into their electricity supply contracts. Flogas Enterprise has established partnerships with prominent corporates such as Medtronic Ireland, Britvic Ireland, Wavin Ireland, The Merrion Hotel, and
Valeo Foods Ireland.
CPPAs can be signed over short or long periods, guaranteeing both the renewable generator and corporate consumers a fixed electricity price and hedging against market risks. Flogas Enterprise identifies the buyers and sellers and brings all parties together to deliver a CPPA structure that works for all. Customers can be bundled together with other customers, meaning they can partner with a wind farm they otherwise could not have partnered with due to scale.
FOSTERING SUSTAINABILITY
Flogas Enterprise has developed a clear and simple approach to help companies achieve their sustainable energy goals, called Carbon Kaizen. It is a roadmap for businesses to take continuous, simple steps towards sustainability, which includes steps such as reducing energy waste, switching to renewable power and biomethane, running their fleet on Bio-CNG, or
consuming energy directly from renewable projects such as solar or wind farms via a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA).
Flogas Enterprise is ISCC accredited for biomethane supply and is the inaugural supplier of bio-CNG as a transport fuel in Ireland. Compressed biomethane significantly reduces carbon emissions from HGVs, addressing a substantial portion of transport emissions HGVs make up just 3% of vehicles on Irish roads but are responsible for 20% of transport emissions.
Flogas Enterprise has taken another significant step towards fostering sustainability in the Irish transport sector by commencing the construction of a Bio-CNG refuelling station at St Margarets in North County Dublin. This station, set to open in June 2024, will mark Ireland’s first public dedicated Bio-CNG facility, supporting Irish businesses to decarbonise their fleets and scope 3 emissions.

Gas Networks Ireland’s activities extend throughout Ireland, and the organisation is committed to having a positive social impact in the communities in which it operates, progressing towards a cleaner energy future for all. In demonstrating that commitment, Gas Networks Ireland is active in running volunteering and charity fundraising programmes to support communities, which have been in place for over a decade, through social impact activities comprising Education Support, Community Support, and Biodiversity Support. Further solidifying this commitment, Gas Networks Ireland was recently awarded the Investing in Volunteers Standard. This prestigious recognition highlights the excellence of our volunteer management programmes.
As proud holders of the Business Working Responsibly Mark, as well as supporters of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), social impact is an important aspect of Gas Networks Ireland’s corporate social responsibility strategy. It aligns its activities across the areas of environmental, social and governance, with particular focus on six of the SDGs: Affordable and Clean Energy; Climate Action; Responsible Consumption and Production; Good Health and Wellbeing; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; and Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Edwina Nyhan, Director of Strategy and Regulation, Gas Networks Ireland, says, “Our corporate strategy and our sustainability strategy are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals which are a shared global blueprint for better outcomes for people and the planet. As a business we are committed to ensuring that sustainability is at the core of our business. Our community initiatives are driven by our sustainability strategy; they are focused on similar themes, around education and awareness, in particular encouraging students into STEAM subjects.”
Nyhan also points to the importance of interaction with the people in the communities the business serves. “Looking at some of the groups that we interact with, particularly Age Action, we’re very conscious of inclusion and how we can build relationships with communities. We want our programme to reflect our strategy and to be inclusive of the communities in which we operate as a business.”
ACROSS COMMUNITIES
During 2023, Gas Networks Ireland and its employees backed over 54,000 hours of social inclusion initiatives and causes within communities, with one in five employees volunteering their time throughout the year. Gas Networks Ireland also undertook extensive analysis to assess the effectiveness
of the programme and subsequently diversified its community activities and offered employees new and innovative ways to engage with the programme, including short and flexible volunteering options. An annual budget is set aside to support charitable or voluntary organisations. A portion of this budget is designated for employee requests – all Gas Networks Ireland employees can make an annual funding request for a cause of their choice. Gas Networks Ireland also endeavours to support any fundraising undertaken by employees either through active promotion or direct contribution to the cause. From gardening blitzes with Age Action, to helping prepare Christmas dinner for the homeless, to passing on decommissioned laptops to underprivileged teenagers, litter picking, and blood donation drives, the extensive range of activities spans communities across the country, mirroring the reach of an organisation with a presence so deeply ingrained in daily Irish life.
Upskilling for the Future
Springboard+ provides heavily subsidised upskilling and reskilling to create life-long learning opportunities and cater to skills gaps in the market.
Springboard+ began in 2011 as part of the Government’s Jobs Initiative. Its aim is to provide free and heavily subsidised upskilling and reskilling opportunities through higher education in areas where there is an identified skills need. A particular feature of the initiative is upskilling people who are unemployed or those with an extended break from the labour force, such as those providing caring duties.
Springboard+ complements the core State-funded education/
training system and is one of several initiatives designed to support people back into employment, improve the skills of those in employment, and to build the supply of skilled graduates to meet the current and future skill needs of the Irish economy.
A WIDE RANGE ON OFFER
In the thirteenth year of Springboard+, we are proud to be delivering a programme that supports people in their working life by providing life-long learning opportunities. Since 2011, more
than 100,000 people have taken part in an average of 250 courses each year, run across 36 providers throughout the country – all with one single aim in mind, moving forward on their career path.
In the 2023/24 academic year, Springboard+ is offering 8,729 new places on 260 courses across the country – 90% of which are being delivered in a flexible format (online, blended and distance learning). Included in this year’s programme are 858 places on ICT Skills Conversion courses.
CHANGING CAREERS, CHANGING LIVES
One of the most popular aspects of Springboard+ over the lifetime of the programme has been the wide range of courses on offer. It caters for those who simply want to learn something new, to workers who have spotted skills gaps in the workplace and want to future-proof themselves for a rapidly changing economy or want to make themselves more valuable to their employers.
“Having worked for most of my career as a mechanic, a serious accident in 2009 meant that I could no longer work in this sector. Springboard+ has allowed me to change my career and fulfil my potential,” says a participant on the Postgraduate Diploma in Executive Management in TUS, whose experience opened up a new career path.
It is also a go-to programme for people who want to re-enter the jobs market after a period outside of the workforce, for instance due to family caring responsibilities.
Its inclusivity means that anyone can sign up to do a Springboard+ course and know that it will help them move further along their chosen career path. A graduate of the Masters in Cybersecurity, Privacy and Trust in SETU illustrates this point, saying, “In order to gain skills and refresh previous skills, this was a brilliant opportunity. If you have a hunger for learning and have a disabling condition/disability, it can be impossible to attend a university in person. Learning online is the perfect solution. It enables anyone who has a desire to learn, to learn. My mind is challenged, and my future looks brighter because of this opportunity.”
Another graduate, from the Diploma in Environment, Climate and Sustainability in UCC says, “Springboard+ bridges the gap of costs for people who are working and wish to pursue further study. The cost-of-living crisis meant that if I hadn’t secured a place through

These are just some examples of people who may otherwise have felt excluded from higher education and the career opportunities that it provides.
FILLING SKILLS GAPS
The COVID-19 pandemic not only had a huge impact on people’s lives but also on their ability to continue on their career path. As the world moves beyond the restrictions that COVID-19 placed on it, people are anxious to reskill or upskill to protect their livelihoods, and employers are anxious that the skills they need are available from the workforce. This is where Springboard+ plays a significant role – it works with employers to look at potential skills shortages and offers participants an opportunity to fill those gaps. It is an excellent example of industry working with education to ensure the needs of the economy are met.
The gaming industry is one area that is thriving and an example of where Springboard+ has responded to industry needs
to train participants for real life opportunities. “It gave me a whole new range of skills and knowledge I never would have dreamed of acquiring in normal circumstances,” says one graduate of Sound Design for Games in Griffith College. This year’s key skills sectors include Cybersecurity, Health Innovation, Data Analytics, Procurement, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Climate/ Sustainability and Energy, Engineering, Manufacturing, Construction, Business, Administration and Law.
The Higher Education Authority is proud to run the Springboard+ initiative as it successfully merges two key elements – education/ training and market demands. Springboard+ provides the solution to ensuring the economy has the right skills needed for work. Since its inception there has been consistent success for Springboard+ graduates and we will continue to work with our providers, delivering a broad spectrum of courses, in tandem with employers to ensure their skills needs for the future are met under this initiative.

Since its arrival in 2004, Huawei’s activities in Ireland have developed from supplying mobile phones, building Ireland’s first national fixed wireless network, and providing fibre optic broadband technologies, to being at the forefront of the current 5G digital transformation. significant economic benefits from Huawei’s operational expenditure and exchequer contributions, with a total annual economic contribution of €0.5 billion. Huawei’s Irish operations employ 510 individuals and support the employment of a further 5,700 individuals through indirect and induced effects from its activities. Huawei Ireland has also been recognised as a “Top Employer” in Europe for the three consecutive years (2021-2023).
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Huawei’s activities globally, and in Ireland, are underpinned by a core focus on research and development (R&D). Indeed, the EU ranks Huawei in the top five investors in R&D in Europe. Annually Huawei spends 10-15% of its global sales revenue on R&D.

At the core of KeyGreen’s operations lies a steadfast commitment to sustainability. Embracing a zerolandfill policy, the company ensures that all waste is meticulously sorted and directed towards recycling channels or a Waste to Energy plant, generating electricity for the National Grid. Cardboard undergoes full recycling, shipping to mills, while glass is transformed into cullet for reuse in bottles. 100% of our organic waste is processed using Anaerobic Digestion (AD) producing both Biogas and Digestate to support a circular economy, powering vehicles with biomethane fuel and creating organic fertilizers. The introduction of a range of on-site food digesters for the

commercial sector represents a ground-breaking advancement, swiftly converting food waste into bio-fertilizer within 24 hours. This innovation not only addresses food waste but also significantly reduces emissions associated with off-site processing, marking a paradigm shift in waste management practices. This fertilizer will play a key role in enriching global soil reserves in an eco-friendly manner in the future. It is estimated that 33% of global soil is currently nutrient poor growing to 50% by 2050. In testing ‘infused’ soil using this bio fertilizer showed a 400% increase in growth versus the control.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
While serving communities in its daily business operations, KeyGreen colleagues come into daily contact with those who are living without a home on the city streets. This inspired us to partner with Peter McVerry Trust, a national housing and homeless charity committed to reducing homelessness and the harm caused by substance misuse and social disadvantage.
Our company supports Peter McVerry in several ways throughout the year; we support and take part in a number of Peter McVerry events as well as running our own Christmas Lights campaign, in which we install Christmas lights on several of our trucks and raise funds and awareness using our social media channels.

Kingspan’s mission is to accelerate a netzero emissions future built environment with people and planet at its heart. We believe buildings of the future should conserve energy and reduce emissions and harness the power of the natural environment. Our portfolio mainly consists of products that make a positive impact on resource efficiency – particularly our high-performance insulation solutions, in relation to in-use energy and carbon-saving benefits.
‘Planet Passionate’ is one of four strategic pillars of Kingspan’s business model. Through this group wide 10-year sustainability programme, Kingspan has set 11 ambitious targets with the aim of helping to impact three global issues: climate change, circularity and protection of the natural world. The overarching programme goals are to significantly reduce Kingspan’s environmental impact, further enhance the environmental performance of our products and contribute towards the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
HITTING TARGETS
Through the programme we have set and verified our 1.5⁰C aligned science-based targets covering value chain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (scopes 1, 2 and 3), including achieving a 90% absolute reduction in GHG emissions within
our operations and a 42% absolute reduction in scope 3 GHG emissions from 2020 base year. We also have measurable targets on harvesting rainwater, eliminating waste to landfill, increasing use of recycled materials and more.
Each year, Kingspan produces its Planet Passionate sustainability report to set out where we are on our journey and our learnings. Our 2023 report highlighted critical progress against our targets , including:
• A 65% absolute reduction in scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions compared to 2020 base year, with a 40% absolute reduction in scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions in 2023 alone
• 49.6% of all wholly-owned Kingspan sites had solar PV systems installed by the end of 2023
• In 2023, we achieved a 33% reduction in waste to landfill since 2020
• 858m PET bottles were recycled into our processes in 2023, enough to fill over 1,100 football pitches
• 57 million litres of rainwater were harvested in 2023
SUPPLY CHAIN
While we are proud of these operational achievements, the majority of Kingspan’s carbon emissions (88% in 2023) come from our upstream supply chain so we are working closely with
our supply partners to reduce the carbon intensity of key raw materials. This is facilitated through a range of channels, including our Annual Supplier Forum, internal and external cross-functional supply chain meetings and regular scope 3 data tracking and analysis. This collaboration was recently recognised by CDP, which named Kingspan a 2023 Supplier Engagement Leader.
We are also working closely with suppliers to find short- and medium-term solutions to reduce the embodied carbon of our key products while maintaining their high performance. To-date, we have launched three lower embodied carbon products to the Irish and UK markets as well as our first biobased insulation product, HemKor. HemKor represents a significant step forward in Kingspan’s strategy to combine advanced material science, bio-based products and product innovations that can reduce embodied carbon emissions in buildings. We continue this research at IKON, our global innovation centre in Ireland, to bring further new solutions to market that align with our Planet Passionate goals and help tackle the climate crisis.

PATIENT ADVOCACY AND DISEASE AWARENESS
Takeda partners with key stakeholders, such as patient organisations, to support patients in Ireland.
Last year, in partnership with the Irish Haemophilia Society, Takeda Ireland launched the Finding Von Willebrand’s campaign to raise awareness of, and shine a light on, Von Willebrand’s Disorder (VWD) in Ireland. The Finding von Willebrand campaign featured three video stories from people living with VWD, brought to life with animation, and one video interview with a leading clinician at the National Coagulation Centre at St. James Hospital, speaking about the signs and symptoms. Combining social media and working with GP Buddy, the campaign also included a diagnostic tool for GPs and people experiencing unusual bleeding to use to determine the appropriate course of action they should take.
In February 2024, in partnership with Rare Diseases Ireland and Rare Ireland, and supported by 16 patient organisations, Takeda Ireland launched the I Am Number 17 awareness campaign. The aim of the campaign was to increase the understanding of what it is like to live with a rare disease and show that rare isn’t always that rare. The title of the campaign ‘I Am Number 17’, reflects the fact that 1 in 17 people in Ireland will be affected by a rare disease at some point in their lives. The campaign spotlights and
shares the stories and portraits of 17 Changemakers each living with a rare disease. Following the launch, this photography-led campaign was displayed during a month-long exhibition in St. Stephen’s Green park in Dublin.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT THROUGH SCHOLARSHIPS AND APPRENTICESHIPS
In 2018, Takeda Ireland embarked on an apprenticeship journey with Biopharmachem Ireland’s Laboratory Apprenticeship programme. Due to the success of this programme Takeda Ireland was nominated by the external Employers body Ibec for the SOLAS Generation Apprenticeship Employer of the Year, which was subsequently awarded at the end of 2021. This is a practical example of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and career development in practice. The Laboratory Apprenticeship programme has provided Takeda Ireland with a real solution to some of the industry challenges, such as a highly competitive market, skill shortages and an over-reliance on graduates. The dual college/ on-site experience approach allows apprentices to connect theoretical knowledge with practical application. This is evident in the successful and seamless transition of Takeda Ireland’s eight graduating Level-7 apprentices into the business as full-time permanent Quality Control Analysts across the Bray and Grange Castle sites.
In 2023 Takeda Ireland engaged in a partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) to create a new scholarship available to students enrolling in the BSc in Advanced Therapeutic Technologies degree programme at RCSI from September 2024. The BSc degree in Advanced Therapeutic Technologies is designed to develop the next generation of scientists who will endeavour to innovate and collaborate to create breakthrough medical therapies and technologies. This scholarship will offer additional financial support of €25,000 in total, over
the four-year duration of the BSc in Advanced Therapeutic Technologies programme. The objective of the scholarship is to support an undergraduate student to realise their full potential by lessening the financial burden of attending university and therefore allowing the student to fully focus on their academic coursework.

Takeda Ireland’s Bray and Grange Castle manufacturing sites have developed and implemented a robust Climate Action Plan to accelerate their local decarbonisation efforts. This accelerated programme has seen a substantial investment at the two manufacturing sites, with the overarching plan encompassing a wide range of initiatives and targets aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and fostering sustainable practices. These plans also include focusing on reducing the company’s dependency on the national grid and water conservation.
Both sites are proudly certified to ISO45001 for occupational health and safety management and ISO14001 for environment standards. In addition, Takeda Grange Castle is certified to ISO50001 energy management standard, validating the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and providing a framework for continuous improvement.

In 2018 Virginia International Logistics bought its first compressed natural gas (CNG) truck and became the first logistics company to complete a zero carbon journey to mainland Europe and back. Since then, it has added significantly to its CNG fleet year after year, resulting in 20 CNG trucks in 2023. In August 2022
Virgina International signed a partnership with Flogas Ireland to supply 100% renewable gas to fuel the CNG fleet, and it has installed refuelling stations at its sites in Dublin and Virginia.
ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT
The company’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its fleet. The roof of the on-site truck workshop in Virginia, Co Cavan, was identified as a suitable solution to reduce dependency on the electric grid and accommodate 268 solar panels, which went live in October 2021. Along with rainwater harvesting, tree planting initiatives, responsible waste management and the provision of electric vehicles and charging points for staff, Virginia International is actively engaged in mitigating its environmental footprint.

stablished in 1988, Woodie’s is Ireland’s market-leading DIY, Home and Garden retailer with 1,500 colleagues across 35 locations. It is listed as one of the 75 Best Large Workplaces in Europe, the highest-placed retailer in the Great Places to Work index in Ireland and is one of only two organisations to be listed as a Best Workplace for Women six years running, as well as being recognised as one of the “Best Workplaces in Ireland” for the seventh consecutive year. In 2014, there was a need for significant operational and cultural change across the business. A new leadership team came on board and established the HR function. One of the first tasks undertaken was to complete a colleague engagement survey in partnership with Great Places to Work; the company failed to reach the Great Places to Work benchmark in any of the 72 areas of employee experience measured within the survey.
The leadership team understood the link between a highly engaged workforce and business performance, and set about changing the organisation’s culture.
The results were briefed to everybody in the business, and listening forums were established with every team. Each team provided feedback on the change needed at a company level to make Woodie’s a Great Place to Work. Each team also created an individual action plan to improve employee experience in areas within their control.
The company strategy to make Woodie’s a Great Place to Work for all colleagues, covered: Leadership; Communication; Personal Development; Reward and Recognition; Corporate Social Responsibility; and Diversity and Inclusion.
The new approach has been tracked and measured by an annual Great Place to Work survey, Pulse surveys and collaboration with the colleague committee and regional managers.
A NEW APPROACH
Under the new approach to employee engagement, all managers underwent three years of leadership development training, and all new people managers joining the business now undergo six months of leadership development training and two days of Inclusive Leadership training.
New training courses to stimulate employees were also introduced, including both further education options (an Apprenticeship in Retail, Bachelor of Business in Retail Management and a Certificate in Retail Operations) and a variety of product training events which run throughout the year.
Performance development reviews were introduced for the first time and all colleagues meet to discuss their development and progression goals with their manager at least twice per year.
Along with a host of other rewards, benefits and recognition initiatives, Woodies has turned around its employee engagement, and its most recent survey showed a leap from the baseline 2014 score of 39% stating it was a great place to work, to 87% in the most recent survey—a great result, from employees who feel proud of where they work.

Turmec, a world leader in recycling solutions, was established in 1972 and has been based in the Gaeltacht at Rathcairn, Co. Meath, since then. It now employs a workforce of 100 people, operating from their expansive 66,000 sq. ft manufacturing facility.
TURNKEY PROCESS
Turmec offers planning, design, manufacturing, installation and support to waste and recycling management companies globally. With over 50 years of industry experience, designing and developing cutting-edge, bespoke plants, Turmec provides a no-risk design solution for new or existing recycling plants as well as for general engineering projects.
The in-house, highly skilled team of engineers and designers offer a complete turnkey process, from initial conceptual drawings to a fully operational plant. Turmec designs, manufactures, installs and provide maintenance for recycling plants across the globe, and in 2018 were winners of the Irish Exporters Awards (medium-sized business).
The team’s experience is dedicated to finding the best recycling engineering solutions for clients’ requirements, giving them peace of mind with tried and tested approaches, combined with design expertise to address any specific requirements. The goal is to create systems which minimise labour
input while extracting high-quality recyclables consistently, achieving maximum throughput with minimal maintenance.
WORLD FIRST
One of Turmec’s key projects is the Turmec/Rino project, which is the world’s largest state-of-theart construction waste processing facility in Brisbane, Australia. This project is a testament to Turmec’s commitment to sustainable waste management and its ability to deliver large-scale, complex projects.
The €30m project began in March 2022 with a timeline for completion by November 2023. The facility processes Construction & Demolition (C&D) and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) waste, with a processing capacity of 475,000 tonnes per hour. The facility is a world-first, able to sort through wet and dry waste under one roof.
Dan Blaser, Rino Recycling General Manager, told Australian Waste Management Review that they had scoured the globe and “brought together the best engineers in the world to successfully collaborate
with us to deliver a leading plant that underpins a strong sustainable recycling industry for Australia”.
Geoff Bailey, CEO, Turmec outlined how this is the largest project, by scale, in the company’s long history in the supply and installation of mechanical treatment plants worldwide.
“Our expertise and knowledge made us the ideal candidate for this project, which is the biggest mixed construction and demolition plant in the world by volume. Turmec specialises in dry waste separation techniques and CDE with wash plant delivery, and we have collaborated with Rino to deliver a turnkey facility offering wet and dry plant options.”
The solution Turmec created and installed means that varied waste types can be integrated into an automated production line which effectively separates out the materials allowing for the production of a number of high-quality products such as aggregates and road base. The residual waste can be used as fuel for industrial boilers.

Following her appointment as Managing Director in 2019, Klair Neenan’s approach to prioritising customer needs and their longterm decarbonisation goals has been fundamental to SSE Airtricity’s success. Responsible for a workforce of almost 1,000 across the island of Ireland, Klair has guided the business through a period of significant volatility. PIONEERING MODELS
Klair has worked with her team to spearhead the growth of SSE Airtricity’s Energy Services business, including the pioneering one-stopshop model for home retrofit in Ireland and the launch of innovative low carbon products. The success of the one stop shop model is best demonstrated by its role in the delivery of Ireland’s National Retrofit
Programme, receiving recognition as a best practice model from countries looking to launch similar energy efficiency models. Having introduced a €25 million Customer Support Fund in 2022, the first and largest of its kind in Ireland, Klair’s customer centric approach and commitment to doing the right thing, played a critical role in SSE Airtricity’s decision to forgo profits in the last financial year. The Fund included significant donations to two reputable charitable organisations in Ireland and Northern Ireland – totalling more than €3m, and available to all service users rather than being ringfenced for SSE Airtricity customers. Under Klair’s stewardship, SSE Airtricity’s leadership on customer supports was solidified in March 2023 when €8.6m of profits were redistributed back to customers in the form of household credits.

There are 740 Danone employees in Ireland, working in the Dublin office and at two manufacturing sites in Rocklands, Wexford and Macroom, Co. Cork. Danone’s portfolio of market-leading food and drink products supports the health of millions of consumers and patients worldwide throughout all stages of life, and includes leading brands such as Actimel, Activia, Alpro, Evian and Volvic. 2023 also marked the first year of Danone’s partnership with FoodCloud, a social enterprise which is focused on reducing food waste and redistributing surplus food. In addition to donations of excess Danone products, equating to over 175,000 meals, the partnership offers nutrition expertise and healthy recipes to FoodCloud’s network of over 700 charity partners, from Danone’s
in-house team of nutritionists and dieticians.
INDUSTRY INITIATIVES
Earlier this year, Danone Ireland was also an active participant in, and supporter of, the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme, ensuring all Volvic and Evian bottles sold in the market are compliant with the Scheme as Ireland strives to increase its recycling rates and deliver a circular economy.
In addition, in his first year as Vice-Chair of the Prepared Consumer Foods industry group, Killian has played a leading role in representing this segment of the Irish food industry, which comprises local and international food and beverage companies.
Danone Ireland’s key focus is to deliver positive outcomes for consumer and patient health.
Last year, Danone UK & Ireland launched new health commitments across dairy, plant-based and beverages portfolios, committing that at least 90% of its product portfolio by sales volume will not be high in fat, salt, or sugar (HFSS) and promising never to produce a HFSS product aimed at children.
Killian is eager to build on these commitments and go beyond the regulatory standards to promote healthier eating and drinking choices amongst consumers in Ireland, empowering them to make healthier choices by making transparent nutrition information readily available.
Building a Limitless Ireland
National Broadband Ireland has ambitions for transformative impact through access to affordable, reliable, ubiquitous broadband
As the largest public private partnership in European telecoms, the National Broadband Plan (NBP) is of a size and scale that requires collaboration across the public and private sectors to expedite the roll out in the national interest.
National Broadband Ireland (NBI) was chosen, by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC), through a procurement process, to build, operate and maintain Ireland’s high-speed broadband network.
NBI is delivering and operating the infrastructure, driven by an understanding of the transformative impact that access to affordable, reliable, ubiquitous broadband can have—proudly declaring that NBI is “building a limitless Ireland”.
PROUDLY DELIVERING
National Broadband Ireland Chairman, David McCourt, recently stated: “Getting major infrastructure projects right is a huge challenge globally, but with over 220,000 premises now passed by highspeed fibre, Ireland’s National Broadband Plan proudly sits among the top global mega projects for being on budget, on schedule, and still delivering against its original objectives.”
EY has recently reassessed its original cost-benefit analysis commission by the State to determine whether the NBP would generate a positive return to Ireland. EY’s latest results demonstrated substantial incremental benefits for the NBP over the 25-year appraisal period, with the
total leaping up to €5.9bn compared to the 2019 estimate of €4.4bn.
The project brings together some of the most talented individuals in the sector, from Ireland and abroad, each with the deep knowledge and experience to deliver a project of this scale and complexity. Build partners include Circet, Secto, Gaeltec and Actavo, while Indigo and Entegro are the network design partners. NBI is also working with infrastructure owners and operators such as OpenEir (pole and ducts network) and Enet (State-owned MANs).
FUTUREPROOF NETWORK
It is anticipated that the network will involve a total of 140,000km of fibre cable and over 1.5 million poles from networks throughout the country, with over 15,000 kilometres of underground duct networks for fibre cable also required for the project. Where possible, existing infrastructure is being used to hang or lay the fibre cables. This is a sustainable approach which saves
time and money.
New networks are based on optical fibres as it future proofs the network. The capability for optical fibre cable to carry vast amounts of data over long distances is what makes it so effective.
In terms of the operating model, NBI is a wholesaler, meaning that they sell to broadband service providers who in turn sell to consumers and businesses. This wholesale model has already proved to be successful as over 50 different broadband service providers are utilising the NBI Network. The array of broadband providers ensures a quality, range and competitiveness of services are available to end users.
NBI believes that better broadband networks promote social progress, equality, and sustainability. Furthermore, with equal access to local, national, and global opportunity, every person, community and organisation in Ireland will be empowered to achieve more.
