Welcome to Issue 5 of Irish Printer for 2019. Three new members of staff have joined the Trimwel team, reflecting a buoyant company that’s all set for a somewhat uncertain future. Amassing a good level of stock and ensuring no stock is routed through the UK has also placed the company in a good position, regardless of what Brexit brings. We spoke with Trimwel MD Nick Little about the company’s plans for the future and how the business is faring since its acquisition by Metamark last year; turn to page 15 for more. Also in this issue, we caught up with Donnan Cullen from Canon for a chat about the company’s recent event in Citywest. This wasn’t your typical exhibition; attendees weren’t ushered from one machine to the next for a quick demo. Donnan and the crew adopted an application-led approach, bringing customers on a journey from pre-press to finishing. Antalis and Printing & Graphic Equipment (PAGE) were also on hand to ensure customers got the opportunity to focus in on one machine or process that was of interest as opposed to being shown six or seven different pieces of equipment and only being interested in one or two of them. For more on this innovative event, turn to page 25. We also reveal the shortlist for this year’s Irish Print Awards and turn the spotlight on hot foil stamping, examining how the technology is evolving and why hot foil stamping and similar embellishments in printing are a steadily growing sector.

As always, we’d love to hear from you. If you have any thoughts on this issue, please drop us a line at editor@irishprinter.ie. Enjoy!

LAUNCHES TRIAPRINT POLYPROPYLENE

Antalis has added Triaprint to its sustainable product range. Manufactured by IPB, the extruded polypropylene sheet consists of three layers with a cell structured core and smooth top and bottom layer, both corona treated, making it ideal for screen and UV digital printing. Antalis says the new product is an excellent environmentally friendly alternative to the use of foam PVC, foam board and other rigid plastics, as its construction is 100% polypropylene which makes it 100% recyclable. Sheet sizes are available in 1220 x 2440mm and 1500 x 3050mm, with thickness options of 3.4mm and 5.7mm. Antalis stocks Triaprint in white with other colours available made to order.

HP

TO CUT THOUSANDS OF JOBS OVER NEXT THREE YEARS In an effort to implement a new simplified structure, HP has announced it intends to reduce its worldwide headcount by between 7,000-9,000 employees “through a combination of employee exits and voluntary early retirement”. The restructuring is expected to deliver annual savings of $1 billion by the end of the 2022 financial year. At an analyst briefing, chief financial officer Steve Fieler said the biggest savings would come from a simplified go-to-market model and the elimination of regional operating layers. In addition, the optimisation of the group’s manufacturing and R&D footprint along with the rationalisation of platforms to create a simpler portfolio will add to the overall savings. For its home and office printer division, a strategic change will see HP charge more in future for hardware that can work with third-party inks, “pivoting” the value proposition so that “supplies will no longer be the singular metric”. It will also offer lower-priced printers that will only work with HP ink. When it comes to commercial and industrial printing, the focus on graphics will remain consistent. “Through the first half of 2019 we saw more than 30% growth in publishing pages printed, double the 15% last year. We’re seeing more than 10% growth in commercial pages, more than 10% growth in labels pages print,” added Steve. It’s unclear if Ireland will be affected by HP’s worldwide cost reduction programme. When HP announced the closure of the bulk of its Irish operations two years ago, 500 jobs were cut at its printing manufacturing facility in Leixlip. Its main operations in Ireland now surround a facility in Liffey Valley, which carries out various nonmanufacturing roles.

NEWS NEW LABEL ADHESIVE TECHNOLOGY FROM AVERY DENNISON Avery Dennison introduced its new Surfas Technology at Labelexpo Europe. The company says the new adhesive technology increases surface contact for better initial tack to create a stronger hold on rough finishes, like corrugated boxes. It offers a sustainable edge and will be available at the same price as conventional labelling solutions for corrugated board. “We’ve cracked the code for labelling irregular surfaces,” said Eric Bartholomew, Global R&D director. “The technology’s stronger initial tack and higher adhesion make it a solution you can count on across the life of the label.”

Neopost

CHANGES ITS NAME TO QUADIENT Neopost has announced that it’s changing its corporate business name to Quadient. The company says its new branding strategy reflects the company’s dedication to helping clients better connect with their customers as interactions have become increasingly connected, personal and digital. “In January 2019, we unveiled our new strategy aimed at growing our company and moving away from being a holding company to a focused, integrated organisation,” said Geoffrey Godet, Chief Executive Officer of Quadient. “It was critical to align our corporate brand platform with this new strategy, using a purpose-driven brand to help businesses leverage our

To coincide with the release of impressive sales figures for 2018, Delta has announced two new senior appointments to its executive board. Dean Smith and Tim Ingram-Smith have joined the company as Chief Sales & Marketing Officer and Chief Information Officer respectively. Dean will be responsible for group sales, bid management, marketing and group strategy, while Tim will be looking after all aspects of The Delta Group’s ‘IT and Technology’ proposition, both internally and externally. Delta’s financial results for last year were also announced; in 2018 sales grew by 15% to £92.6 million, a record in the business’s history. This growth was driven by the successful acquisition of Superior Creative in August 2017, the win of the exclusive Sainsbury Group contract and increased sales within Europe. The business also posted an operating loss of £871k, reflecting in part the upfront costs of its major client win, expansion costs associated with new facilities overseas and new capital expenditure including the purchase of the UK’s first Nozomi C18000 printer.

NEWS PRINT A BOOK ON DEMAND IN LOUISBURGH A recent article in the Connaught Telegraph revealed how budding authors can have their works printed on an Espresso Book Machine (EBM) printer which prints, collates and binds a single book in just a few minutes. The facility is available at Books@One in Louisburgh and is run by Michael Cusack, who runs an independent book shop offering a small print-run option at a competitive price. There are fewer than 60 EBMs all over the world and this is the only one of its kind in Ireland and the UK. According to Michael, a small book can cost as little as €5.50 per unit to print, with the price increasing according to the number of pages.

PRINTING IN SPACE MOVES A STEP CLOSER

Innovative startup Space Foundry has developed a materials processing and direct write printing technology for advanced manufacturing. Heralded as a major step forward from 3D printing, a plasma printer can print on any surface and could be a big factor in driving forward with the ability to print in space. Whereas 3D printing creates plastic objects, a plasma printhead changes the material as it’s being fashioned, with “integrated fluid delivery design [enabling] mixing of multiple liquid precursors and gas mixtures”. Instead of just printing objects, a plasma-based device can produce chips which are printed on a glass surface, for example. This could, says the company, be revolutionary for the Internet of Things in terms of being able to use glass-based circuit boards.

competitive advantage for printing companies. The price pressure is increasing, the optimisation options are declining and differentiation is needed. At the same time, environmental legislation is becoming stronger, while customers and consumers are becoming more critical. The cooperative’s role is to share expertise in healthy and residue-free printing, the circular economy and Cradle to Cradle certification that the founding companies have acquired over two decades. Members can request site certification as soon as they have signed up and print using the existing Cradle to Cradle certified materials. The founders of the Print the Change cooperative are Ernst Gugler (CEO of the gugler* printing company in Austria and Chairman of the cooperative), Kasper Larsen (CEO of KLS PurePrint in Denmark) and Markus und Renato Vögeli (CEOs of Vögeli AG, Switzerland). printhechange.coop

BOBST LAUNCHES NEW HYBRID PRESS BOBST’s new hybrid label press combines digital and DigiFlexo printing in a single press. The MASTER DM5 is, says the company, the most digitally automated press in the label market, with the highest print quality and productivity. It features a small footprint, user-friendly access to digital print heads and the automated setup of multi-process operations. The digital print engine inside the MASTER DM5 is made up of Mouvent’s Cluster Technology which allows for easy maintenance and all-in-one fully integrated inking. It also has the widest digital colour gamut in digital printing and the most accurate and easy to achieve digital colour matching.

presented its prototype for a new application of Covestro materials for additive manufacturing – 3D-printed orthopedic insoles for shoes. The insoles are efficiently produced using an automated and completely digitalised process that generates almost no waste. The part in question is in the form of a 3D file that can be sent anywhere in the world. On site, a printer uses this data to produce the physical product, regardless of whether only a single individualised sole or millions of soles have to be produced. According to the company, thermoplastic polyurethane is the material of choice thanks to its favourable range of properties. Covestro’s TPU products cover a wide range of hardness which can be adjusted by changing the printing structure. This allows manufacturers to print shoe insoles

Labelexpo

Labelexpo pulls out all the stops A total of 693 exhibitors took part in this year’s Labelexpo which saw a focus on hybrid printing, flexible packaging and automation Spread over nine halls and covering almost 40,000 sq m of floorspace, Labelexpo 2019 presented a mammoth offering of label and package printing technologies along with live demonstrations. This included the fast growing areas of hybrid printing, flexible packaging and automation. Poor weather didn’t deter 37,903 visitors from 140 countries flocking to the four-day show – a substantial increase on 125 in 2017. Major press manufacturers announced multiple sales on a daily basis, including HP’s 200th HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press, sold to a Slovenian converter; Domino’s 7-colour N610i inkjet press sold to a Belgian converter on day one; Lombardi’s sale of five Synchroline 430 presses during the first two days of the show; Gallus’ sale of three presses into India; Konica Minolta’s AccurioLabel 230 toner label press, sold on day one and which also debuted at the show; Grafisk Maskinfabrik’s DC350 digital converting line and a SR350 inspection slitter rewinder sold to a UK converter; Grafotronic’s laser die-cutting system sold to an American label converter after launching the machine at the show; and Screen’s first Trupress sold into Germany. Demonstrating that the show has evolved from a labels show into a wider package printing event, flexible packaging innovations were much in evidence on the show floor, with press launches including OMET’s new X7 flexo printing machine for labels and flexible packaging with 670mm (26”) web width. Lombardi unveiled its Invicta i2 line, designed for flexible packaging in the mid web sector, while Nilpeter launched its 17” wide FA-Line press featuring cold foil, lamination and their new high-speed semi-rotary die-cutting unit.

10

Hybrid machinery was another key trend very much in evidence, with launches including BOBST, who unveiled its new Master DM5 hybrid label press and MPS, who launched a new 17”/430mm edition of the hybrid EF Symjet press. Mark Andy unveiled a new entry- to mid-level digital hybrid press, which was demonstrated live at the show with advanced in-line converting. Other machinery launches included Gallus’ Digital Printbar digital embellishing unit, designed specifically for opaque white and using inkjet-based digital print technology. Konica Minolta premiered its recently launched AccurioLabel 230, a new version of its digital toner press, while Grafotronic showcased seven new models out of a total 11 machines presented at the show. The show’s popular main feature, the Flexible Packaging Arena, drew in large crowds at every one of its 11 live demonstrations. Visitors witnessed a Xeikon CX500 (digital) and a BOBST M6 (UV Flexo), producing indirect food contact flexible packaging to the latest GMP standards. In addition, HP Indigo offered live demonstrations of digital pouch-making, showcasing the HP Indigo 20000 digital press, Pack Ready Lamination and the Karlville pouchmaking machine, making its show debut on their stand. Other HP innovations at the show included HP Indigo 8000 Digital Press, which ran in line with the ABG Fast Track die and the best-selling HP Indigo 6900 Digital Press, which visitors could see in action with an integrated Kurz DM-Jetliner finishing module. At the neighbouring Sustainability Insight Café, sponsored by Avery Dennison, Xeikon, Ravenwood Packaging and Sihl ARTYSIO Packaging, visitors were able to see how they might boost their green credentials with a gallery of the latest sustainable innovations. The Label Industry Global Awards 2019 took place on the evening of day one, with winners from Avery Dennison, Esko, GMG and GEW honoured at the 1980s themed celebration, which also marked Labelexpo’s 40th anniversary. The event was hosted by 1980’s singing legend and performer Tony Hadley.

Thinking outside the Cube Investment in a new Iridesse from Xerox is allowing Limerick-based Cube to solidify its position within the medtech sector Operating for over 20 years, Cube is a leading provider of design, print and packaging solutions to several sectors but in particular to the medtech industry, an area in which the company excels. A recent investment in an Iridesse from Xerox is set to cement Cube’s leading position in that sector. Brendan Ring, Managing Director and James Maloney, Operations and Finance Manager at Cube first had a chance to see the Iridesse in action at a Xerox Colour Reignited Event in the Aviva Stadium last year. “We have a longstanding relationship with Xerox and had been using a Versant 2100 at the time. Investing in new technology is a priority at Cube; we have a state-of-the-art IT system and last year, we installed a new 5 colour litho press. Colour digital is very important to us as is staying at the top of our game so even though we hadn’t really considered a new investment right at that time, when the opportunity to upgrade presented itself we decided to go with it,” said James. The new Xerox Iridesse has the potential to let Cube move into new sectors. “There are lots of facilities on the

new machine that present us with a whole host of new opportunities. Right now, we’re focusing on the CMYK element of the new machine, which is allowing us to produce a higher value output.” Benefits of the Iridesse include less downtime and a higher quality product. “We were getting very good quality off the Versant but the fact that the Iridesse is a new press guarantees long-term reliability.” As mentioned above, the medtech sector is an area of expertise for Cube. “We print ‘instructions for use’ booklets and product information leaflets for the medical device, pharmaceutical and technology markets. We want to further expand our presence in these sectors and that’s where the Iridesse will come into its own. We pride ourselves on quality and service; the Xerox Iridesse will help us improve upon those standards.”

Expanding on all fronts Three new staff members at Trimwel as company growth accelerates In 2018, Trimwel was acquired by Metamark and since then, the company has been making moves to position itself as a leading distributor in the sign and allied industries market. According to Nick Little, Trimwel’s MD, the company’s exclusive range of Metamark materials and products from 3M Commercial Graphics puts it in a solid position when it comes to economic uncertainty. “We’ve gone from being one of three distributors that sold the product on the island of Ireland to the only distributor, essentially the manufacturer of the product. That’s a good position to be in and it has boosted the business. There’s a lot of people out there that buy Metamark, we have a very loyal customer database. Of course, we’ve had a couple of odd months, no one knows what Brexit will bring and that’s having an impact on the entire sector.” Having enough stock in the event of a no-deal Brexit is a consideration for lots of companies. “We’ve brought in

L to r: John Carson, Phil Thomas

a lot of 3M stock and we’re lucky in that nothing is routed through the UK. When it comes to Metamark, we have amassed a good amount of stock so we’re as prepared as we can be. As we’re the manufacturers, we’re in a good place.” The three additional staff members reflect a buoyant company that’s prepared for an uncertain future. “Phil Thomas has joined the company in the role of Regional Account Manager and he’ll be responsible for the Munster region. He’s joined on the sales team by John Carson who has taken on the same range of responsibilities as Phil but his role is focused on delivering Trimwel support and service to the Connaught and Leinster region.” Finally, the office based team at Trimwel has welcomed Ashling Moriarty to the role of office administrator. “This new role is focused on keeping the wheels of commerce turning at Trimwel and was needed to help the company maintain its service levels in the face of significant growth since its acquisition.” Nick says there are plans in place to take on more people in the near future. “We’re looking forward to the future and to making sure we maintain the same high standard of service that we’ve become known for.”

Sustainability

Curing the Sustainability Issue IST METZ is continually developing coating and drying products and winning awards for innovation, like the ‘Red Dot’ accolade it secured this year

The latest launch from the company is the LED SCR model. Its key features are that it dries only in the areas where needed and it has the advantage of needing cooling water of just 18°C compared to 25°C on many other models. Both these features minimise energy usage, one of the key factors in the growing market interest in LED-UV. Printers are looking for more sustainable drying systems which can still provide them with the excellent quality and performance results associated with conventional UV. Both UV and LED-UV mean dry sheets/substrates off the end of the press and that means traditional process printing can better compete with digital presses on speed of turnaround. In addition, UV and its derivative versions provide a brilliant aesthetic finish for top quality results. The technology has been developed by joint research teams from IST METZ and its subsidiary ITL. LEDCure is a sister system to the proven LAMPcure for conventional UV. Barriers to the adoption of LED have come down to the arrival of low migration inks and the constant evolution of new pigments and ink formulae. There’s bound to be more development at drupa in Dusseldorf next June. The IST METZ XT8 Booster enables the system to reach an extremely high output and dose which greatly increases cure speeds. LEDCure is an on and off system so there’s no warm up time. It can be tailored to different presses and can cure between 90 and 540mm in 30mm increments so only the energy needed for a job is used. The LEDCure Cartridge is easily accessed, making maintenance and servicing very easy. Furthermore, IST has introduced XChange which means that the curing unit can be swapped over, minimising downtime during servicing. IST can discuss UV, LED-UV and LE-UV options with printers who want to know more. It can discuss the optimum solution based on specific business needs

and applications. It is also worth noting that it offers a hybrid option in its HotSwap device which uses interchangeable cartridges in the same housing and with the same power supply. This enables customers to invest in conventional UV now, with the option of converting to LED-UV later, without having to replace the entire UV system. Full training, spare parts and engineer support is available for all areas of Ireland. IST has nearly 50 years’ experience in drying and curing and serves sheetfed, narrow web and digital markets.

Snap up an Iridesse! The Xerox Iridesse 7 Colour production press has replaced a Versant 2100 at Snap in Cork city centre, giving the branch more scope for increased business Steady growth and a strategy to diversify into new markets have prompted the purchase of a new Iridesse from Xerox at the Cork city centre branch of Snap. The team at Snap were keen to take advantage of the creative opportunities that the Iridesse offers – iridescent colour, heavier stock weights and types. Right now, business is good at Snap. Over the past 12 months, the Cork city centre branch has been pushing steadily into new sectors and increasing its market share across the region. Snap operates in several sectors, including large corporates, third level education, professional services and large retail. The new Iridesse from Xerox will allow the firm to expand further into these markets and provide customers with an improved service. In researching a new printing press, the team at Snap wanted a strong production machine that would hit over 100,000 prints per month. They also wanted a printer that went a step further and offered more; the iridescent colours

available on the Xerox Iridesse fulfilled that need, allowing the branch to hit new heights with its marketing collateral. In July 2019, the company decided to take the plunge and invest in the machine. That decision was made a bit easier thanks to the long-standing, 20-year relationship between Snap and Xerox. “The new Iridesse from Xerox is allowing us to grow our digital print business and offer more high end, stand-out print services. Our operators received comprehensive training and they’re due to get more later this month. The machine has really set us up for steady growth going forward,” said Loraine Hollingsworth, Group Marketing Manager at Snap. The Snap team are feeling the benefits of the new machine. “The new Iridesse features a powerful production engine, duplexing up to 400gm at speed and printing up to 660mm long sheets. It’s able to print gold, silver and white and it’s supported with comprehensive finishing on-line. Investing in a new Iridesse from Xerox was a great investment.”

Interview

Better Print24 Online!

Web-to-Print has not reached its full potential yet Fabian Frenzel, the new member of the management board at Unitedprint, gives his view on the future of WTP and reveals what the future holds at the company What are your responsibilities in your new position on Unitedprint‘s Board of Directors?

In the coming years, the main focus will be on accompanying our transformation from a hybrid group consisting of WtP with its own production facilities to a smart, data-intelligent e-commerce company that’s committed to the platform strategy. It is therefore a matter of breaking down complex, traditionally vertical business processes in order to carry them out more efficiently. This brings with it not only new marketing and sales processes, but new procurement processes, which is of course a challenge for our entire company.

So far, Unitedprint has been known as a company that produces for its own customers. Is this set to change? Yes, something very fundamental is changing with us. We are currently implementing the step-by-step outsourcing of our entire in-house production. We are increasingly covering our analogue production – i.e. everything relating

to offset printing – via qualified national and international production partners. We are using new online-based, technology-supported resources with decisive advantages over conventional structures. With the help of this system, operational processes – which include manufacturing processes – can be presented in a decentralised, scalable and internationally process-optimised way. Among other things, this gives us a maximum degree of flexibility and accelerates delivery times because we are much closer to our customers. “Think global. Print local” is a slogan that we have been practising very successfully at various levels for several years now and continue to perfect.

Unitedprint‘s flagship portal, print24, is known for its high product quality and delivery reliability. Can your production partnerships meet these requirements of industrial production?

Throughout Europe, there are thousands of small, medium and large printers with great expertise in delivering high quality products with very high performance and absolute reliability. Many of these printers are still experiencing difficult times because they simply lack sufficient capacity for highly qualified employees and their mostly first-class technical equipment. With us, printing companies gain an additional, significant source of revenue without having to

hundred independent partners throughout Europe who operate their own WtP shop. These partners use our free WtP power, including the complete IT infrastructure, to build an independent web-to-print business with their local and regional target groups. This works really well and is, so to speak, the sales counterpart to our procurement platform. In particular, my colleague Ali Jason Bazooband, managing director of all our international sales companies, plays a crucial role here. He is responsible for the sales of our brand shops print24, Easyprint and our special portal for advertising technology DDK PRINT BIG, as well as all our USS partner shops. We therefore see ourselves as an open network that no longer feeds into our own production only, but above all allows third parties, such as trading partners and producers. All this has a lot to do with data intelligence and network competence and for more than 10 years at least, has much to do with a very long and very successful experience as an international online printer. As a completely debt-free company with a magnificent capital base, we are very proud to be able to stand up to national and international listed and capital market-financed corporations.

So essentially, platform economy in procurement?

So local and regional presence is still in demand in the online age?

And in sales! We have been offering our USS partner shop program at Unitedprint since 2016. We now have several

is consistently committed to the platform concept and opens up to partnering both in production and in sales. “With Web-toPrint, as a ‘first mover’ we combine physical commerce with digital change. E-commerce processes, IT and data management are increasingly our company‘s biggest capital. And best of all, everything is still in its infancy.” Wolfgang Lerchl, founder, sole owner, Chairman of the Supervisory Board More information can be found at www.unitedprint.info/en

Does that mean print24 gets a new face? USS offers complete e-commerce web-to-print shop solutions for printing and media. Independent shop partners with and without their own production have more than half a billion product combinations with their own web-to-printshop and sell in 22 countries. With Unitedprint, they benefit from the experience and efficiency of one of the most successful Internet printing companies in Europe. With a broad and constantly growing range of products and services, low prices, fast delivery times, high product quality and personal service, USS shop operators enable direct market access to global sales volumes of €100 billion without having to make their own investments – simple, free of charge, plug&play. just act as contact partners in large conurbations. Many of our partners are active in their personal networks, where there has been little contact with WtP so far. In the past two years, we have also invested in this customer proximity for our print24 brand. We now have our own local sales teams in each of our 22 European target countries, who personally look after our customers’ interests and develop new customer relationships.

What are the big topics in the area of marketing?

Of course, it’s still about achieving the highest customer satisfaction and guaranteeing it permanently. We work almost obsessively to provide our customers with the perfect mix of variety, product quality, delivery speed, service and best price. This means that support, promotion and sales are even more central to all our efforts than they have been in the past. One concrete task will be to provide our existing customers with even more individual and tailor-made support. This means, on the one hand, a targeted customer communication based on the requirements and needs of our respective customers and on the other hand, a targeted and effective intermeshing of all communication channels. In the future, our customers will be approached exactly by the content and channels that suit them best. This means great efforts in using contemporary data intelligence and of course, improving our web presence.

Not only print24, but also Easyprint – our portal especially for smaller companies and families, who can easily design a variety of products online with great new design templates and our new FreeDesign tool. Here, too, we are taking a completely new approach and integrating our selfdeveloped KI-based chatbot for our automated customer communication.

That’s an ambitious mission

Everyone has realised that the internet has fundamentally changed our lives in a very short time. Every company must be aware that the continued dynamics of digitisation will turn the basic concept of the previous corporate strategy upside down. Allaoui Graphic Machinery GmbH was responsible for the professional, smooth and reliable purchase of all offset printing machines including all technical equipment from Unitedprint‘s analogue pre- and postpress area. The internationally operating machine specialist of the graphic industry from Aachen has access to a global network in more than 70 countries and, thanks to years of experience and proven expertise in this field, was able to implement such a major project to the highest satisfaction of all absolutely fairly and reliably. The team around Ammar Allaoui is able to market machines to suitable customers with competence and reliability. “Not everyone can handle such a large package. And it‘s not enough if you only have the financial creditworthiness. You have to have the experience to market the machines in a targeted manner and to handle the entire process in a sensitive, planned and structured manner,” says Ammar Allaoui. René Winkler, Member of the Management Board IT/ Production/Logistics at Unitedprint said: “With Allaoui Graphic Machinery, we had an extremely competent, cooperative and reliable partner at our side for this project at all times who fully met our requirements.” You can find more information at www.allaoui.de/en

Event

Let’s do things a bit differently A customer event held by Canon brought attendees on a print journey from pre-press right through to finishing

n partnership with Antalis and Printing & Graphic Equipment (PAGE), Canon recently held a product showcase at its offices in Citywest. This wasn’t your usual exhibition however; attendees weren’t ushered from machine to machine to view demo after demo. This was a very carefully thought out event that put the customer front and centre and asked the question – how do we ensure the customer gets to experience the product they’re actually interested in, when Canon’s portfolio is so huge? The answer was to make the event as application-led as possible. “We have a three-sided totem pole in the office. The first side represents what a consumer would see on the street, the second shows what they would see in the supermarket and the third shows what they would see at home. Each side also features a number of different applications that Canon can provide, from labels on jars and direct mail to a window graphic and pop-up stand. During the event, we encouraged people to take a look at the different applications on the totem and pick one that they felt might be of interest to their customer. Once

Event

they made their selection, we explained the process and then made our way to the piece of technology that produced it,” said Donnan Cullen, Key Account Manager, Production Printing Products at Canon. For example, say the customer was interested in a window graphic printed on Contra Vision. “We brought them to the media section featuring Contra Vision and gave them the opportunity to get a feel for the product. We then ran the product on the printer and recreated that first example that they saw.” At the event, customers got the opportunity to focus in on one thing that interested them as opposed to being shown six or seven different pieces of equipment and only being interested in 5% of them. There were a few elements of the event that were of particular interest to attendees. “People really loved the simplicity of the poster printing on the ColorWave. We were able to demonstrate on the poster printer how quick and easy it is to print on plain paper. You don’t have to use special coated paper, you can produce very high quality output on very average media.” Customers were also intrigued by the Océ Colorado UV machine that can print gloss and matte in the same job. “To demonstrate

the versatility of the machine, we carried out a print job on vinyl and were able to show the different sections of the job in matte and different sections in gloss. So customers were really blown away by a job that was printed in one pass and showed one section printed in gloss and another in matte. With the matt there’s no longer a need to matt laminate and that’s also a big consideration.” Rather than just displaying the equipment, Canon also ensured customers experienced the pre-press process. “We had Océ pre-press there and we also had Will Condron from PAGE at the event. He had five pieces of finishing equipment on display. Antalis was also there with some of its more specialised media. We were able to bring the customer on a journey from pre-press through to paper, printing and finally, to finishing. Essentially, we were able to bring an application that they liked to life.” This was very much an event showcasing the services of three companies, not just Canon. “We wouldn’t have been able to do it without Antalis and PAGE being there. We’ve held events in the past featuring just our equipment but this worked much better. Over the two days we had about 22 companies, ranging from one to three people per customer. We were trying to make sure that the experience each person had catered to their specific needs. Every attendee spent between one and two hours at the event, that’s how long the process took. I think that if more people had been there on the day, it wouldn’t have worked half as well.” As worthwhile the event was for attendees, it also proved a valuable learning experience for Canon. “What we learned from the event was that you have to be prepared to tailor a bespoke experience for the people visiting on the day without any preparation at all. You don’t know what that person is going to be interested in.” Feedback from customers that attended the event has been very positive. “We’ve had a lot of follow-up from companies interested in what they saw on the day. Some are looking at tie-ins between the products that we supply and the products supplied by PAGE. At the moment, we have follow-ups with about 60-70% of the customers that were at the show.” A similar event is already in planning for next year, following the same application-led approach. “We’re thinking about possibly broadening the event with a guest speaker from one of the large retailers. We’d also like to attract more companies from Northern Ireland so we’re also considering adding an extra day to make it easier for companies from the North to visit us. We’re definitely going to stick with the application-led process. It was so much more than just showing people machines. Anyone can do that; we’re aiming higher.”

Technology

SPOTLIGHT ON…

Hot foil stamping Why hot foil stamping helps packaging to shine… ifferentiation. It’s what every brand owner wants for their product, but in increasingly crowded markets, it’s becoming harder and harder to achieve. Brand owners know that packaging is the key differentiator on the shelf and special finishing techniques – such as hot foil stamping and thermal embossing – can elevate their product compared to others and provide consumers with a visual shortcut to the quality of what’s inside. Hot foil stamping is the process of using heat and pressure to apply metallic foil or holograms to materials such as light papers, carton board, laminated board, plastics and corrugated board. The term can encompass simple flat foil stamping, deep embossing or embossing combined with foil stamping, hologram and holographic foil application and foil stamping combined with micro and structural embossing. Traditionally, gold or silver have been the most common colours used for foiling, but a wide range of coloured foils are available today.

30

APPLICATION ACROSS INDUSTRIES

Hot foil stamping is used across a wide range of industry sectors, but most notably in food and drink (particularly confectionary such as premium chocolate, wine and liquor bottles and other premium foods), cosmetics, electronics, banknotes, business cards, greeting cards and art work. There is no doubting the value of embellishments like hot foil stamping. According to a study by the Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA), hot foil stamping and other similar enhancements on product packaging can help attract consumer attention faster and keep attention longer than ordinary packaging. In another study of disposable single-serve coffee packaging, the packaging with gold foil attracted the study participants’ attention 2.5 times faster than the control packaging. It’s not just about looking good. Hot foil stamping is also used for its anti-counterfeiting properties, particularly in pharmaceuticals and in technology such as smart phones.

THE STAMP OF SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability is becoming an even bigger priority for brand owners and is in itself a means of differentiation. Many assume that packaging with foil is not recyclable and therefore not sustainable, but a study by the FSEA on the recyclability and re-pulpability of foil-decorated stock and board validated the recyclability of paper products decorated

Technology

According to a study by the Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA), hot foil stamping and other similar enhancements on product packaging can help attract consumer attention faster and keep attention longer than ordinary packaging

by the traditional hot stamp foil processes. In addition, the study found that neither hot nor cold foil-decorated products would give rise to problems that may render the decorated paper products unsuitable for recycling.

HOW IS HOT FOIL STAMPING EVOLVING?

Hot foil stamping has been around in one form or another for well over 100 years. The process itself has not changed dramatically in that time, but the technology is evolving and enabling better efficiency for manufacturers. A hot foil stamper may be an offline, stand-alone machine, or may be in line with a printing press and/or other units. While mainly sheet-fed, some high-speed hot foil stampers are web-fed. Whether sheet or web-fed, sophisticated handling systems are needed to position the substrate and foil between the plate or cylinder that holds the dies and that supplying the counter pressure. “These machines have seen some remarkable advances in recent years,” said Jacques Reymond, Head of Product Marketing Business Unit Sheet-fed at BOBST. “For example, normally, hot foil stamping requires several passes through the machine – the printing, then the enhancement, then the cutting. That’s a lot of movement on the sheet registration. But BOBST integrated a power register in MASTERFOIL 106 PR that overcame that. We are always looking to evolve.” Jacques is referring to POWER REGISTER 2, which delivers perfect foil-to-print register in MASTERFOIL 106 PR, a hot foil stamper from BOBST associated with the highest quality. It is also jam-packed with clever features like lower beam cam movement, which allows for longer impressions and higher foiling quality, or a foil unwind system that makes changing foils as easy as pressing a button. While hot foil stamping isn’t the only form of differentiation for packaging – cold foil, varnishes and metal inks are just three examples of other great visual embellishments – it is a steadily growing sector that’s here to stay. Simply put, the effect will always appeal on packaging and provide a visual shortcut to the quality of the product inside.

THE HOT FOIL STAMPING PIONEERS With more than 50 years’ experience in the design and manufacture of foil stamping machines, BOBST is at the forefront of advances in this technology. From the BOBST SP 1260 BM of the 1960s, through to today’s highly sophisticated equipment, flat bed BOBST presses have pushed the boundaries of the hot foil stamping process. A good example of BOBST’s forward thinking is EXPERTFOIL 142, the only size VI die-cutter hot foil stamping machine on the market. Until the arrival of the EXPERTFOIL 142, only ‘bolt-on’ foiling solutions were available to finishers working in the size VI format. “It’s an amazing machine that gives customers a bigger margin to make a margin,” said Jacques Reymond. “Getting extra products onto a sheet can dramatically change the profitability of the process, especially when margins are tight.” It’s not just the large-format tasks however. BOBST has developed an entire range of hot foil stamping solutions that cover the complete range of production needs, from straightforward block foiling, hologram application with pinpoint accuracy, to the creation of highly complex foil effects.

Beyond the machines

BOBST machines are associated with several key differentiators, including very precise registration at high speeds, low foil consumption and fast job change-over time. But it’s not just the machines, it’s what BOBST stands for – Swiss reliability, meaning a safe long-term investment. “Our machines are famous for their reliability, but we also have a wide-ranging service support and know-how and we can offer training and support on hot foil machines as needed,” said Jacques Reymond. “And customers know we are always willing to invest in new technology that has their interests at heart. Even as we speak, major new developments are in the works in hot foil stamping at BOBST.”

Having a good work/ life balance is important to me and Avery Dennison has always supported this.

What do you love/ hate about the industry?

I love that every day is different in my job. Things are constantly moving and changing in this industry and there’s always a lot going on. I like that I get to meet customers and new industry contacts all the time.

How has the industry changed since you started in it? The biggest change I have seen is the increased focus on sustainable packaging. Avery Dennison has a lot of new developments at the moment, so it’s a very interesting area to work in.

Worst job?

I have always made good choices when moving on to a new role. I honestly can’t think of a job that I did not like. Earlier in my career, I did take a job in furniture sales that possibly wasn’t the best fit for me.

Dream job? Detective.

Favourite film? Jerry Maguire.

Favourite band/ musician?

I love all kinds of music but my favourite band would be Coldplay.

What do you see as your biggest success in life?

My children. I am very proud of them both and all their achievements. I enjoy watching them grow and learn.

Are you a glass half empty or half full person?

I believe I am a glass half full person. I always try to see a positive that will come from any situation.

Who or what makes you laugh? My brother Noel. We can’t have a serious conversation ever!

What superpower would you most like to have? I’d like to be able to travel back in time.

How would you like to be remembered?

As an open and honest person, who worked hard and always tried her best.

Life is….?

Short! Take the trip, buy the shoes, eat the cake... definitely buy the shoes!!
