WELCOME
Welcome to Issue 7 of Irish Printer for 2018. Diarmuid Dawson, the new President of the Irish Printing Federation, has high hopes for 2019. He plans to tackle ongoing issues within the industry such as the apprenticeship scheme and rising postage rates and work with affected companies in a post-Brexit Ireland. The Federation is currently in talks with DIT and Solas to try and breathe new life into the apprenticeship scheme and has come up with a solution to ensure the syllabus is actually fit for purpose. If successful, a new and improved scheme will begin to tackle the skills shortage that has impacted the industry for the past few years. To read more about Diarmuid’s plans as President over his two year term, turn to page 14. This issue also includes coverage of the 2018 Irish Print Awards. The event was held in the Crowne Plaza Northwood and as always, was a great success. Before the dancing started, Business Print was crowned Printer of the Year while Gerry Andrews paid tribute to his late friend, Dr Lorcan Ó hÓbain, who played a crucial role in the printing industry over many years. Our awards coverage starts on page 19. This is the last issue of Irish Printer for 2018 and I’d like to thank you all for your continued support. Happy Christmas to all our readers and here’s to a healthy and happy 2019!
As always, we’d love to hear from you. If you have any thoughts on this issue, please drop us a line at editor@irishprinter.ie. Enjoy!

SUSTAINABILITY 101 The Design, Print and Packaging Skillnet recently held a ‘sustainability symposium’ which looked at how sustainability can help us navigate the major problems we face as a global community. A team of expert speakers also examined the opportunities that sustainable practices can have on businesses. Thanks to the success of the event, Skillnet plans on holding a series of zero waste workshops in the near future.
Glamour Magazine turns to digital only Condé Nast has announced that it plans to shut down print operations for Glamour magazine. The publication is set to shift to a digital-only publication and will publish its last print issue in January. The magazine’s editor-inchief, Cork native Samantha Barry, stated that digital is where the audience is. “That monthly schedule, for a Glamour audience, doesn’t make sense anymore.” Last year, Condé Nast scaled back Glamour‘s publication frequency from once every month, to 11 issues a year. Last year, the company lost a reported $120 million, which prompted its decision to cut the magazine’s monthly publishing schedule and also sell three of its other titles.

Ricoh
Ricoh named Company of the Year by Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce
Ricoh was recently named ‘Company of the Year’ at the Ireland Japan Business Awards 2018. Hosted by the Ireland Japan Chamber of Commerce, the annual awards recognise the companies making outstanding contributions to Ireland-Japan business relations. Mr. Akira Oyama, Corporate Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Sales and Marketing Group, Ricoh, accepted the honour at an awards ceremony held in Tokyo from His Excellency Paul Kavanagh, Irish Ambassador to Japan. Judges were impressed by Ricoh’s growth and investment in Ireland, as well as its commitment to the community, sustainability and charitable causes. The award follows significant investment from Ricoh in the Irish market. In February 2017, the company opened its new Irish HQ in Dublin on the back of a €6.5 million investment. This is allowing Ricoh Ireland to more than double its workforce to 190 by 2020 and increase revenues to €32 million in the same period. Previous winners of the Ireland Japan Business Awards include Fujitsu Laboratories, SMBC, Takeda Pharmaceutical and Corvil.

Fuji Fujifilm announces Jet Press 750S
Fujifilm recently announced its third generation B2 inkjet press, the Jet Press 750S. The company says the new press is the fastest, full colour, B2 sheet-fed digital press on the market and is intended for printers focusing on print runs of up to 5,000. Built on an offset chassis, the new press features excellent sheet-tosheet, front and back registration and up-time on a par with offset, combined with the latest Samba inkjet printheads. New features include a new printhead self-cleaning process called ‘Overflow Cleaning’ which carries out head cleaning at times when the press is between jobs or the printhead assembly is in motion. The new press also features a new Active Head Retraction (AHR) system which lifts the print bars from the drum when a paper deformation is detected (<3mm), reducing the likelihood of paper jams caused by damaged paper.
Gerard Heanue steps down from Heidelberg UK After almost 25 years with Heidelberg, Gerard Heanue is stepping down from the managing directorship of Heidelberg UK, Sweden, Denmark and South Africa. He will continue to be involved with trade body Picon, where he is currently Chairman until June and with the Stationers’ Company where he is Treasurer of the Foundation. His three wishes for the printing industry as he leaves are that the sector gains the recognition it deserves, that it promotes itself better to the public and that both printers and suppliers invest more in young people and training. Heidelberg is currently looking for a replacement for Gerard.

Streamline your production Packaging solutions specialist Essentra has installed a new Océ VarioPrint 6180 Titan at its Dublin offices
After exploring the market for a solution that matched its business needs, Essentra tasked the team at Canon Ireland to find a print solution that would support its current customer base as well as help grow and develop its business. Barry Marron, Managing Director, Essentra, commented: “The team here at Essentra are delighted with this new partnership. After conducting intense and in-depth research over a number of months, we partnered with Canon because of its cutting-edge solution to our unique business needs. We have had the Océ VarioPrint in use for several months now and we can already see a marked improvement in production quality as well as speed and cost-reduction. We are confident that this partnership with Canon Ireland will open up many new business opportunities going forward.” According to Essentra, the Océ VarioPrint came out on top in terms of print quality, cost effectiveness and the ability to turn product around quickly. Up until now, one of the company’s biggest challenges was the need to print highquality products, in short runs, on a very lightweight media. This challenge has been met by Canon.
Océ Varioprint
The Benefits
■ Lightweight media – Essentra can now economically print on 45 Gsm paper while still retaining an offset look and feel ■ Print on both sides – the Océ VarioPrint’s Gemini technology prints on both front and back simultaneously ■ Offset look and feel – a number of competitive products were tested but failed to give the offset quality required by Essentra ■ Cost effectiveness – the Océ VarioPrint has allowed Essentra to print high quality at a low volume economically ■ Business opportunities – this partnership has allowed Essentra to become extremely agile in its product offering, which will allow it to scale and grow its business at an unprecedented rate

Superior quality from Epson A trusted partner of Epson, Irish Print Support supplies the Irish print industry with a range of top level signage printers Thanks to the high quality of the machines, Epson printers supplied by IPS very rarely require follow-up service. “We’ve actually never had a breakdown or a service call. That’s down to the efficiency and durability of these printers,” said Les Sharpe from Irish Print Support. The company supplies three signage printers from Epson’s S-series – the Epson SureColor SCS80600, the SureColor SC-S60600 and the SureColor SC-S40600. Although all three perform extremely well, the most interesting machine from Les’ point of view is the SC-S80600. “Routine maintenance is minimal and automated, allowing print operators to concentrate on file preparation and finishing tasks. A robust feed and take up system that adjusts media tension in real time ensures extremely accurate printing without distortion and also minimises operator intervention. Both of these factors significantly improve productivity over other products available in the market.” The SC-S80600 also utilises a wider range of inks. “Instead of using CMYK as most printers do, the SC-S80600 uses red and orange inks to achieve bright colour gamut. Signage normally includes quite a lot of red as it draws attention. The SC-S80600 uses actual red ink to make pure red colours so you get much cleaner, sharper and brighter colours. That’s what has made this printer the bestselling machine in Europe for the past two years.”
Epson SureColor SC-S80600
The Highlights ■ Features newly-developed Epson UltraChrome GS3 9-color solvent ink – including an all-new red solvent along with the option for white or metallic silver inks ■ Low ink consumption on vinyl and banners ■ Improved adaptation of ink on multiple media ■ Brighter colours and a glossier finish ■ Improved drying performance; faster drying time and no ink on the rollers ■ Wider colour gamut; improved density of yellow and magenta ■ Greenguard Gold certified (100% safe for humans) ■ High-gloss level for minimal graininess When combined with precision media feeding system and a high-performance Dual-Array Precision Core TFP print head, the SureColor S80600 is one of the most productive and photographic sign printers available.

Interview
New Diarmuid Dawson has taken up the position of President of the Irish Printing Federation
Perspectives
14
The newly appointed President of the Irish Printing Federation, Diarmuid Dawson, has a big job on his hands. He takes up the position amid political uncertainty, in an industry under threat by skills shortages and price increases. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, there’s no doubt Diarmuid is up to the task. An industry veteran with over 35 years, Diarmuid has worked across various subsectors within print, in different countries. His career began in Irish Security Stamp Printing Ltd and continued in London where he worked in corporate finance printing for over eight years. Thailand was the next stop, where he set up the country’s first financial print company. For the past 16 years, he has held the position of Managing Director at Innovative Print Solutions Ltd. Now, he’s also the new President of the Irish Printing Federation, taking over from where Eugene Healy left off. Attracting and retaining skilled staff is a well-documented challenge for Irish print companies. 2018 is the first year that no new apprentices entered DIT, a fact that will no doubt exacerbate the skills shortage going forward. To try and reverse this trend and get the apprenticeship scheme back on track, behind the scenes discussions are taking place between the IPF, Solas and DIT. “Right now, we have a commitment from 24 print firms in Ireland who have stated they’re willing to take on an apprentice. In the past, the problem was trying to get these firms over the line and
approved by the ETB’s and Solas. For print firms, it’s not just a case of signing up, it’s a much more complicated process than that. Everyone is busy – firms simply don’t have the time,” said Diarmuid. That lengthy process is something Diarmuid and the team at the Federation have been talking to DIT about. “I feel positive about the programme being saved. Two years ago I was the one doing the ringing around to Irish companies to see if they would be interested in taking on an apprenticeship. It was difficult to get them and the perception was and still is, that the current syllabus is not entirely fit for purpose. That’s a big issue.” A big issue it may be but it’s one that needs

to be tackled if buy-in is being sought from the industry. “The IPF’s suggestion is, keep the scheme as is for the moment but include additional training through the Design, Print an Packaging Skillnet. The industry has changed and apprentices need to learn about the likes of wide format and digital; these elements aren’t included in the current syllabus. We’re saying to Solas and DIT that we have a commitment from the industry that it’ll deliver over 30 apprentices over the next three years. We’ll bolt on the extra training through Skillnet and in time, the syllabus will be changed to cover all requirements.” Other issues on Diarmuid’s radar include Brexit, VAT rates, postage and material costs. “Part of my role is promoting the power of print and highlighting its sustainability. When people compare print and email, what they don’t see is that paper is fully recyclable. You can’t say the same for the different elements of a computer. It’s down to perception and it’s our role in the IPF to get that message across.”
Material costs is also placing enormous pressure on printers. “In 2018 alone, the price of wood pulp increased by 16%. Along with the recent postage increase, that’s passed onto the client. In 2018, we’ll be lobbying government and the relevant departments on these issues and maintaining a very real presence for our members.” You can support the IPF by becoming a member in 2019; go to www. irishprintingfederation.ie for more details.

16
Large format JETRIX printers are manufactured by InkTec and sold in Ireland through Neopost. Xtreme Signs and Graphics has acquired the JETRIX LXRi320 Roll-to-Roll LED-UV printer and has already started to reap the benefits for its business. You don’t have to talk about the JETRIX LXRi320 for long to understand the huge benefits it brings to wide format printers in the market. A 2.5m x 3.2 metre full colour print can be completed in around 20 minutes in photorealistic quality. An added vibrancy is given to the image by the LED ink which is placed on top of the media and prevents cracking. Pierre Phieffer is the owner and Director of Xtreme Signs and Graphics based in Dublin 12. Until recently, Xtreme Signs and Graphics was using a Chinese manufactured eco-solvent, low end, entry level machine for 3.2 metre prints. This machine was slow, causing a bottleneck in production and change was sorely needed if the company was to continue meeting the strict and demanding deadlines asked of it.

Pierre contacted Fergus Byrne, a trusted supplier from Neopost Ireland, who recommended the JETRIX range. Together they travelled to the FESPA Global Print Expo in Germany and while there, spent time at the JETRIX stand. Pierre was interested in the latest roll-to-roll machine which was still in testing at InkTec’s global base in South Korea and together they travelled to South Korea for a demonstration. Pierre explains that “within five minutes we knew it was perfect. It was exactly what we were looking for.” Pierre had brought sample media to South Korea, tested them on the machine and brought them back to Ireland to make sure there was no stretching or ink cracking which can be a problem. Happily, everything worked fine and the order was placed almost immediately through Neopost. “The installation was seamless and flawless. We were extremely satisfied. The support from JETRIX and Neopost was outstanding and since then it’s been printing away no problem,” said Pierre. Previously, a 3.2 metre wide print would take several hours to complete, clogging that machine up for the entire time period. “Now we’re realising a 400% increase in productivity,” Pierre says. Xtreme Signs and Graphics’ bottleneck has been moved from the printer – significantly improving the speed at which the company can produce print jobs and fulfil orders. “Our capacity and the opportunities we can now offer have increased substantially from what we were previously doing.” More frequently customers want speedy, next day or in some cases same day turnaround and will shop
around until they find somewhere that makes that possible. Meeting those standards are possible with the JETRIX LXRi320. It also comes with a profile package which Neopost provides, that profiles the media ensuring the colours come out as they should, eradicating the requirement for expensive reprints. Xtreme Signs and Graphics recently sent 100 panels to a show and none came back incorrect. The use of LED ink also makes the print quality from the JETRIX LXiR320 far superior. Previously, ink would not have always adhered well to the media which can cause it to crack. Therefore, the texture of the media would have had a bearing on the colour, potentially dampening the whole print. The JETRIX LXRi320 is available throughout Ireland from Neopost Graphics. It is ideal for wide format print companies who want to speed up their printing service while not compromising on quality.

The Irish Print Awards were held on the 30th of November in the Crowne Plaza Northwood and were, as always, a huge success. Over 350 guests attended the ceremony which rewards and recognises the outstanding work and achievements of the industry. With over 200 entries this year, our hard-working judges had the difficult job of whittling down the entries to just a handful of winners. They completed their task with aplomb as you’ll see from the winners’ pictures over the next few pages. The Irish Print Awards are one of the most important dates in the print industry calendar. For 41 years, they’ve set a benchmark for quality and excellence in Ireland’s print industry and they’ve also reflected the changing dynamics of a market in flux. The industry may be changing but the Irish Print Awards will continue to recognise excellence in print and celebrate the firms that make this industry so unique. Congratulations to all the winners and here’s to the 2019 Irish Print Awards!

Impro Print Limited Herbarium Creating something simple that still has that innovative look and special feel is no easy task, but that’s exactly what has been achieved with the Herbarium cocktail menu. The subtle botanic illustrations have an original Victorian pioneering feel due to the use of Huber inks and the menu being printed in CMYK. In addition to this, the tactile feel of the cover was completed using soft touch lamination on both sides, giving a material felt finish on the interior which contrasts with the exterior foiled cover. The menu was then punched out along the head, tail and fore edge giving the curved corners a continuous cut.

David Philips and Lauren Harkin
Print Media Apprentice NI Level 3 Sponsored by Alphagraphics & Bottcher Lauren Harkin, NuprintUK
Ray currently manages the company’s small format digital production facility, a team who produces work for some of the world’s biggest brands. Ray is not a “no” person; his positive energy is contagious. According to P+D, he deserves this award because of his determination and what he has overcome personally. Just five years ago, in previous employment, Ray had a very serious accident while working alone. He was left trapped for over 10 hours in a machine, unable to call for help. His recovery was a tremendous struggle both mentally and physically and there was a doubt if he would ever have the use of his arms again.
Lauren joined Nuprint in 2017 as an apprentice pre-press technician after completing A-Levels in Engineering and double award Applied Science. Meticulous, able to work well under pressure and eager to learn new skills, Lauren continuously enhances her personal development, volunteering to work on the local youth charter and promoting STEM-based apprenticeships for young women.

The client’s brief was to create a tactile experience to showcase the artistic imagery in the magazine to its full potential. From the quirky cover content to the luxurious soft feel of the text paper, this magazine truly is a tactile creation. There were some challenges during production, such as printing dark imagery on uncoated paper, but they were dealt with during the printing process. The publication of the magazine size is 240 x 170mm with a 4pp cover printed both sides in four colour process on 300gsm offset paper. There is also an 88pp printed throughout in four colour process on 120gsm offset paper.

It found that in Earth Pact Naturel Material. Esmark Finch sent the clients a carton produced from the new material with information on the process. ‘Don’t Waste, Transform’ was the message the company wanted to get across. As the carton was holding a cactus inside, Esmark Finch decided to run with that theme with a large cactus shape cut out and an insert to match the design to hold the cactus in place. One hundred boxes were printed, with each box including the client’s individual logo, on 295gsm through the company’s Xerox I Gen and zund cut.

These winning labels were printed on an Avery Super Pearl Duncan Sargeant, James Costello Opaque uncoated paper and to highligh the brand, the front label was embossed, debossed and spot varnished with black and grey print. The real challenge for Label Tech was to come up with a concept that allowed a full colour reverse printed ‘sunset effect’ on the back label, visible only from the front. This was achieved by printing the full colour aspect on PP clear and then combining it with the Super Pearl Opaque to create a dual layered material with double sided print.
24
The printer felt that this design should be distinctive to show off the abilities of print. It wanted the colour Wesley Moody, Aisling Murphy scheme to include pink or purple as well as some form of 3D typography and so Flack Cannon decided to focus on a weathered wrap with some rust. This design brought with it its own set of challenges, such as having to tailor the design programme, print alignment and installation to cater for this print. As a final touch, the ‘Volkswagen’ text was added to the rear with domed letters which were manually applied with gel, a time-consuming process.

The labels were printed using the Flexographic process on a Gallus – RCS on Rustique Blanc FSC S2030 printing paper. These labels were printed in a single pass through the printing press on the Avery Dennison Rustique Blanc FSC with a S2030 adhesive from 5 colours; PMS 9080, PMS 5743, Warm Grey 2, Warm Grey 7 & Black 2. The labels were then embellished with gold hot foil and embossed to enhance the finish.

Business Print Thinkhouse Flash Brochure The brief was for an attention-grabbing newsletter. Business Print expected the project to be a little challenging as the material chosen for the text was 100gm cyclus print and some spreads contained up to seven colours. However, it ran exceptionally well on the company’s new Heidelberg CX 75 5 colour and coater, using CIP 4 ink profiles. To bind the book, Business Print trimmed all text sections oversize, then collated them into sets with the cover which was produced short grain to ensure a crisp spine crease across the grain, without cracking. By increasing the cover, a target for the Singer sewing machine operator was essentially created to hit while sewing, ensuring a neat line of thread.

P+D, Dulux Window Display The brief to the printer was to create a high impact window display for the Stillorgan Décor store, using the tagline “exteriors beautifully created.” Once a visual mock-up was created, the structural design department developed the mechanics for the 3D pieces which included a sun, clouds and a wire system for some 3D leaves, so they could flutter in the wind. These heat resistant materials were layered to create a 3D effect. To make the display really pop, P+D added additional theatre by using false grass on the bottom and backlit the hill and houses with green and blue LED rope lighting respectively.

Impress Printing Works Limited Teeny Words Teeny Words is a small book that took a big effort to produce. The idea behind the production of this book was the theme of metallics. Production included the use of metallic paper, ink, foil and ribbon. It was an intricate undertaking as with two foils on the cover, the registration needed to be precise. The book is printed, foil blocked, folded, collated, threadsewn, mounted and wrapped around with glued end papers, case bound with head and tail bands and ribbon inserted.
