INTRODUCTION Welcome to the seventeenth edition of the RAI’s annual reservations diary. The Restaurant Association of Ireland was founded in 1970 and since then has worked consistently to establish itself as the representative group for the restaurant industry in Ireland, lobbying on behalf of its members at national and international levels. As the official voice of the industry the RAI is frequently called upon by Government and State authorities for consultation, and to give the industry perspective on matters that may affect our members. Our outreach is growing with our strength- we are constantly gaining new members and campaigning on their behalf. Membership of the organisation now stands at over 1,200 and includes Restaurants, Gastro pubs and Café’s. Our countrywide Branch meetings and road-shows allow us to meet members from all over Ireland, listening to the issues raised at a grassroots level and working for improvements in future policy and legislation. There are certainly positive signs in our economic recovery with Tourism numbers up, unemployment figures declining and consumer confidence is on the up. However, a three tier recovery is appearing in the restaurant industry with City Centre business expanding followed by urban areas but growth is still slow in many rural parts of the country. A lot of work still needs to be done in ensuring the long-term viability of the restaurant industry and encouraging both domestic and international visitors. Lobbying plays a significant part in what we do as an organisation. We were delighted that the association and its members campaigned vigorously for the retention of VAT at 9% and we hope that with further campaigning this year it will remain in place for many years to come. Excise duty and local authority rates are the next big items that we will be campaigning on through 2015. We are continuously lobbying on behalf of our members on local authority rates, allergens & calories on menus, the re-introduction of Joint Labour Committees and Sunday Premium payments, government proposals on Sick Pay Schemes, food waste regulations, and many other issues. We have quite an active participation in HOTREC the European organisation representing hotels, restaurants & cafés with our CEO Adrian Cummins on the executive committee. Our Professional Cookery Training Programme was quite successful in 2013/2014 with 36 students graduating in Dublin with FETAC Level 5 Professional Cookery, 18 of whom are now in full-time employment as Commis Chefs! The Galway class of 18 are due to graduate shortly and will complete placements in August. Three are already in full-time paid employment within their placements. We hope to secure funding once again to run this and other training courses across Digital & Social Media, Customer Service, Sommelier, Barista and Food Waste in 2015. The Irish Restaurant Awards mark the biggest restaurant event in our association’s calendar, with over 2,700 people attending both regional and national events. Online nominations doubled in 2014 to 19,000. With our media partner the Sunday Independent Life Magazine it has proved very successful in marketing our industry and reiterating the message to keep dining out. The media pick up throughout the country was excellent with over 347 print articles, many online articles, and trending on social media. These provided much needed publicity and positive news stories. The introduction of a new category Foodie Towns 2014 was a huge success with the title going to Dingle, Co. Kerry. Finally, the Restaurants Association Council, the office team and I would like to thank you for your support over the last year and we look forward to working on your behalf in the year ahead to improve our industry and the success of your business. REPRESENT WHY BE A MEMBER?  We promote improvements in laws affecting the Irish Restaurant Industry locally, nationally and on a European level.  We provide strong representation on issues affecting restaurants e.g. VAT, excise rates, local authority charges & rates, NERA inspections, FOG license regime, IMRO, PPI charges, and revenue & taxation matters to name a few.  We represent the Irish Restaurant Industry in Europe through HOTREC. Our CEO Adrian Cummins is an elected member of the Executive Committee of HOTREC and chairs the Food Committee of HOTREC.  We represent the Irish Restaurant Industry on the Food Safety Authority, Failte Ireland, Irish Drinks Industry Group, Irish Food Service Alliance, Irish Tourist Industry Confederation, National Hygiene Partnership Committee.  We lobby to influence European legislation affecting the Irish hospitality industry.  We organise, promote and protect the interests of restaurant owners and staff.  We take combined action to protect the interests of every member of the Association.  We keep watch on all proceedings of the Oireachtas and European Commission with a view to taking steps to promote/protect the interests of members.  We reinforce the views of the Irish restaurant sector on all matters touching its interests.

ASSIST MARKETING & PROMOTIONS  We organise the annual Irish Restaurant Awards, Ireland’s premier restaurant event: www.irishrestaurantawards.com  Through national and local marketing campaigns we directly increase business and footfall for restaurants e.g: Insider Magazine in the Irish Independent Restaurant Voucher offers.  www.wheretoeat.ie is the Association’s website for consumers. Through this site, restaurant owners have an online facility, where they can post menus, and special offers and it also enables consumers to browse different venues, make bookings, post reviews and enter competitions. All food-related events are posted.  On the RAI website and discussions forum ( www.rai.ie ) members can access up to date human resource templates e.g. safety statements, employment contracts, rosters etc. Members can post any job vacancies to the website. A reservations diary and yearbook and an online reservations system ‘Tablebookings’ are available to members.

 Upon joining each member receives an outdoor membership plaque.  Working closely with Fáilte Ireland, Bord Bia, and Tourism Ireland, the Association has a major input into how members’ restaurants are marketed both at home and overseas.  The RAI has representation on the Food Tourism Forum in association with Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland.  The Association regularly provides members with opportunities to advertise and promote their business on a co-operative basis.  The Association organises seminars and workshops which address specific marketing issues.  The Association provides advice and assistance to members on their sales and marketing activities.

INFORM  The Association distributes a monthly E-zine to all members informing them of events, news issues, new members, HR advice, marketing advice, and what’s new in the trade.  A bi-monthly news magazine, Food For Thought, is sent via the Hotel & Restaurant Times magazine.  The Association aims to improve the technical and general knowledge of the members.  A “Text Alert” system is operated, warning members about breaking news in the industry.  Members’ memos and fact sheets are circulated, advising members on specific pieces of legislation.  The Association assists members on economic, marketing & promotion, legal and technical matters, including copyright, safety legislation, fire precautions, liability insurance, labour relations, licensing, taxation, suppliers and information technology.  In conjunction with associate members/ trade suppliers, the Association provides information on the availability of products and services related to the restaurant industry.

NETWORKING  3 Branch meetings are organised per year including a road-show.  Irish Restaurants Golf Society.  The Irish Restaurant Awards run from February to June each year with various regional awards evenings.  The RAI organise an Annual General Meeting, Conference and Exhibition which gives members the opportunity to meet trade suppliers and associate members.  RAI is represented at Catex, Hospitality Expo and the Food & Hospitality Show.
