ravel is not always about the journey, and with Casa de La Flora any visit is definitely all about the destination. This striking contemporary resort takes you on a special voyage of discovery, where cutting-edge architecture accentuates the uncomplicated beauty of nature, and the height of luxury blends with simple pleasures like feeling the sand beneath your toes. Looming above the billowing white roofs of the beachfront decking, the cubist, glass-fronted facades of the villas stare impassively over the crystal blue waters of the Andaman Sea. The masculine lines and raw colors of the resort highlights the dazzling blue of the sky, the lush green of the trees and the golden sands of the empty beach. Casa de La Flora is all about making such contrasts work, utilizing design and architecture to offer visitors striking vistas of natural beauty, while presenting every guest with the perfect destination to rest, relax and unwind. To help achieve these lofty aims all the rooms come with state-of-the-art entertainment systems, utilize superior Thai-made amenities and offer their own private pool. Outside the room, the resort offers an exclusive spa, an open-air seaview restaurant, a chic lounge bar and its own private mangrove swamp to explore and relax within. This fusion of high aesthetic appeal, cutting-edge facilities and the beauty of the surrounding landscape combine to make Casa de La Flora the ideal getaway from the stresses of modern city life for those with a contemporary sensibility.

THE STORY The organic, timeless quality of the monolithic villas of Casa de La Flora may lead you to believe they’ve been around forever, sprouting naturally from the surrounding rock to stand as sentinels over the secluded beachfront. However, the truth is that they’re actually a very recent arrival to the Khao Lak coastline. Nestled within the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park, the resort of Casa de La Flora benefits from all the serenity that this idyllic location offers. Mile after mile of long sandy beaches are backed by towering hills and thick jungle, waterfalls and mangrove swamps abound, while some of the most beautiful island chains in Thailand lie just off the coast. It’s not hard to see why the owner and brains behind the Casa de La Flora project, Khun Sompong Dowpiset, fell in love with Khao Lak. “You just can’t find many places like this, so untouched, so beautiful,” explains the leading Thai businessman. “The beaches are second to none, it’s just a perfect natural destination.” Still, the arresting contemporary design of the resort is a million miles away from Khun Sompong’s original plan to build a quiet holiday home by the sea. The change of heart was brought about by his love for the area and the experience of creating and running Casa’s sister resort, La Flora, a little further down the coast. The lessons learned inspired him to try something different and further fueled his desire to share his vision with visitors to Khao Lak. “I really didn’t want to follow the same philosophy as other resorts,” he explains. “I am really focused on offering the customer what they want on holiday, the idea that they come to a top resort to experience rest, relaxation, release and romance.”

THE VISION
Armed with this initial concept, and a great deal of faith, Khun Sompong identified leading Thai Architecture firm VasLAB Studio as the people to help turn his vision into reality. They were charged with the brief of creating a bold looking resort that still managed to express the natural warmth implied by the name ‘flora’ or flower, while also considering that guests would require the very highest levels of privacy, service, facilities and amenities. “Many people kept asking me why are you doing this, why are you being so daring? It’s very expensive, very costly, the architecture, the amenities, but I believe you have to make the investment, to take the risk, to achieve your aims.” Like any worthwhile ambition, things weren’t always straightforward. Initial issues with the available land meant numerous rewrites to the plans, while challenges created by a flat site and the unique weather conditions experienced when constructing a beachfront property led to further delays to the project. Achieving the desired results also required a strong head and hand by Khun Sompong and the architecture team, to ensure all the interior, conceptual, structural and lighting elements came together into one successful, very beautiful whole. Casa de La Flora is a testament to that shared vision: 36 cubic-form villas that manage to embrace their strong, hard lines while also representing an abstract vision of a flower reaching up from the ground to embrace and drink in the sun; a vision that works in harmony with the natural surroundings. The patience and perseverance of Khun Sompong and his team represents a contemporary love song to the region of Khao Lak and a bold commitment to pushing Thai hospitality, design and architecture forward.

The following chapters explore how this visually arresting resort came into being and how the continued commitment of the team ensures it offers guests the chance to experience a unique and luxurious stay in their very own little piece of tropical paradise.

ESCAPE TO NATURE Crystal clear waters, sweeping bays, unspoilt beaches, jungle-clad peaks, dramatic waterfalls and easy access to stunning archipelagos, all just over one hour from Phuket International Airport help make Khao Lak a highlight of the Andaman coastline. Khao Lak is situated around 70km north of Phuket island and consists of a series of beautiful coves and beaches that runs for about 20km from Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park in the south to Bang Sak beach in the north. Visitors to Khao Lak also benefit from its location close to national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty, as well as its reputation for providing easy access to some of the most beautiful islands and impressive dive sites in the world. Casa de La Flora offers a chance to explore nature at its most spectacular.

LOCAL AREA
Casa de La Flora lies at the very heart of Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province, perched overlooking a quiet stretch of beach, near the village of Bang Niang just off Highway 4. Close to useful amenities like shops, restaurants, banks and clinics, it still retains an air of exclusive privacy thanks to the individual sanctuaries of the 36 pool villas and the protective shelter offered by the raised reception at the front of the resort. The resort’s unique location means just a short drive will place you at the very heart of nature, whether that’s walking barefoot on the pristine sand of their secret beach, standing at the base of the spectacular Chong Fah waterfall or riding up a steep jungle slope on the back of an elephant.
Casa_C3_TPV3.indd 15
With its own private floating jetty, and three different types of boat available to suit the different requests of individual guests, Casa de La Flora also makes for the ideal base to explore the many wonders of the Andaman Sea, as well as the breathtaking beaches and spectacular dive sites in and around the islands of Surin, Similan and Tachai. Also within close reach are more cultural pursuits such as a visit to the Khao Lak night market, a chance to wander the charming streets of Takuapa or to take time out for some somber reflection at one of the memorial sites dedicated to the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami that struck the Andaman coast on December 26, 2004. And of course if you ever tire of nature, then the myriad nightlife options of Phuket are just an hour or so drive away.

ISLANDS
Experience some of the best diving and snorkeling sites in the world or enjoy your own Robinson Crusoe moment on one of the Andaman Sea’s idyllic island retreats.
Similan Islands Simply one of the best dive destinations in the world, this chain of nine islands is only about one and a half hours by speedboat from Casa de La Flora. The islands boast a huge range of aquatic life, from manta rays, turtles and sharks to hundreds of different species of coral. When you add in a dramatic underwater landscape, filled with giant boulders, dizzying drop offs and mysterious caves, along with excellent visibility and warm tropical waters, it’s easy to understand why it’s such a popular destination for diving and snorkeling trips.
16
Casa_C3_TPV3.indd 16
4/3/14 11:53 AM
Surin Islands This chain of five islands is a national park and a divers’ paradise. Around a two-hour boat ride from Khao Lak, it is home to Thailand’s most famous diving spot, Richelieu Rock, famed for the amazing opportunities it offers to swim with the rare and elusive whale sharks. Extensive reefs on the sheltered eastern side of the islands make it a great spot for snorkeling while the island is also home to one of the last surviving communities of Moken (sea gypsies).
Tachai Island While it’s actually part of the Similan national park, Tachai is the least well known and least visited of the island chain. As a result, it is a tropical paradise both above and below the water. On land you can enjoy the empty beaches or wander past the giant hairy chicken crabs up to the rocky viewpoint. Beneath the waves you’ll get the chance to spot hawksbill turtles, black tipped reef sharks and even majestic manta rays.
Park Closures: As national parks both Surin and Similan islands are closed six months a year (normally from May-October) due to rough seas and the need for the park’s fauna and flora to recuperate.

LAND
The area around Khao Lak is a nature lover’s delight, rich in diverse landscapes and an abundance of flora and fauna, especially within the boundaries of its many national reserves and parks.
Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park Just a few minutes drive from Casa de La Flora is the entrance to this national park whose 125 sq km encompass everything from rocky sea cliffs and secluded beaches to tropical evergreen forest and jagged granite mountains. The diversity of the terrain means an equally wide diversity of animal and birdlife from sea eagles and hornbills to tapirs and flying lemurs. The park is also home to a number of dramatic waterfalls like Chong Fah, Lam Ru and Tong Pling whose sheltered plunge pools offer a chance to cool off after an invigorating jungle trek.
18

4/3/14 11:54 AM
Khao Sok National Park Home to the world’s oldest surviving evergreen rainforest, the world’s largest blooming flower, the Bua Phut or Rafflesia, and some of Thailand’s last surviving wild tigers, it is a spectacular park of soaring limestone cliffs, bat-filled caves, plunging waterfalls and picturesque lakes. From hiking and elephant trekking to taking an ATV tour, there are countless ways to discover the park. Aside from exploring the waterfalls and caves that dot the park, the main draw has to be a boat trip on Cheow Larn Lake, a man-made reservoir that offers the impressive sight of countless huge limestone pinnacles rising up out of the clear water.

DESIGN IMPERATIVE Casa de La Flora is a member of the prestigious Design Hotel Group, a hand-picked selection of more than 200 independent hotels spanning over 40 countries.
Design Hotels are selected for their ability to reflect the ideas of a visionary hotelier, an “original,” someone with a passion for genuine hospitality and authenticity, someone with a fascination for thought-provoking design and groundbreaking architecture. Not just a collection of hotels, Design Hotels can be seen as a collection of stories.
Casa de La Flora is no exception, its 36 cube-shaped villas are a vision of Brutalism, their heavy use of concrete and linear planes offering a very modern interpretation of a beachfront resort. Yet, despite the bold statement it makes, this resort still manages to retain a humble heart and finds a sense of unity and understanding with the surrounding landscape.
This chapter explores the story of this unique resort and discovers how the owner Khun Sompong Dowpiset’s brave initial vision was translated through the designs of leading Bangkok firm VaSLab Architecture and carried on throughout the project by the team of Thailand-based landscape, product and interior designers.

ARCHITECTURAL VISION By VaSLab Architecture
Vasu Virajsilp, is one of the founders of VaSLab Architecture, the dynamic, young Thai design firm, who were commissioned to oversee the transformation of owner Khun Sompong’s vision into a reality. Here, he reveals the inspirations and ambitions behind the arresting conceptual designs of Casa de La Flora.
“We are always trying to play with abstract terms.” Vasu Virajsilp, architect
On being selected: We were approached by one of the owner’s sons, Khun Bheerapong, who was a big fan of concrete architecture, to get involved. They really wanted to do something that people hadn’t seen before in Thailand and we had a reputation for doing slightly weird, cutting-edge projects. We are conceptual designers and we like to convert abstract concepts into real practical buildings. Sometimes you don’t know what we are thinking because we are not doing realistic architecture; we are always trying to play with abstract terms.
The brief:
22
Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 22
In terms of the brief, it was pretty open. The owner outlined what they wanted in terms of the functions and requirements: pool villas, a pool, spa, outdoor restaurant; and a general desire to make it bold and dramatic but also beautiful and linked in some way to flora. Basically, the client told us very broadly what they wanted but it was up to us as architects to fill in the rest, in terms of ideas and architectural styles.
4/3/14 12:19 PM
Inspiration was taken from the forms and movements of plants, from a seed under the ground to a blooming flower. This can be seen in the distinctive lines found throughout the resort, from the villas, to the landscape, to the furniture.

The inspiration:
The challenges:
The family already had a resort in Khao Lak called La Flora (flower) and that name was a partial inspiration. So we had the name, Casa de La Flora, and then we had to think how we could incorporate the abstract concept of a flower into the final designs. We thought about the movement and forms that occur in the natural growth of a plant, from a seed under the ground to a blooming flower. We represented this through the distinctive lines seen throughout the resort, it became the connecting feature, from the villas, to the landscaping, to the furniture, they all have these distinctive lines.
I think the biggest challenge was that the original site was very flat. So we had to really build it up to create a smooth elevation down to the seafront. That’s why the reception is very high up from the street level, it acts like a buffer to protect the resort from the road outside. It’s also why we built the bedroom upstairs for the duplex units at the back, so they still get a great view. We wanted to create an elevation that dropped down smoothly, not like a steep slope. It’s what you call an architectural promenade; you get to experience the architecture bit by bit, not all at once.
These lines also connect to the other inspiration, which is the existing view of the beach and the sea. The tilted roofs and elevated walls all help to maximize the ocean views.

“Good architecture has to stand for itself and be timeless.” Vasu Virajsilp, architect
Favorite features:
“I was trained to think and create architecture with meaning because it makes you feel good in the same way as seeing a piece of art. When you complete a piece of architecture you have to be proud of it.” Vasu Virajsilp, architect
I love concrete so I think one of the most fulfilling things about this project is that the client accepted the whole hotel as a series of concrete boxes. That’s hard for any client to accept because maybe they’ve never seen it before. I’ve loved concrete ever since I was a student. I was really inspired by 1920s SwissFrench architect Le Corbusier. I think his work is very masculine, raw and pure. This material is also very good for sustainability, especially under these tropical conditions, it’s much easier to maintain for much longer.
What is architecture: Good architecture for me has to stand by itself and be timeless. Architecture is all about space and form. It’s about experiencing a space. Personally, I was trained to think and create architecture with meaning because it makes you feel good in the same way as when you see a piece of art. When you complete a piece of architecture you have to be proud of it.
Describe the resort: I think of Casa de La Flora as a flower, a concrete flower. It’s a masculine flower, both beautiful and strong. In strength there’s also friendliness and coziness as well, and that’s what we’ve tried to create. It’s strong outside but very warm inside.
Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 25
4/3/14 12:19 PM
Your perspective is widened in front of your bed so you almost feel part of the sea. It all comes back to the concept of the abstract flower, it’s like a flower blooming to receive the sun.

INNER B E AU TY By VaSLab Architecture
While the exteriors of the resort’s villas have a hard, almost cold, edge due to the use of concrete and raw colors, the architects and owners wanted to bring a warm and cozy tone to the interiors, achieved through the liberal use of local teak, on the interior walls and floors of the individual villas. “It’s the idea of a box within a box,” explains architect Vasu Virajsilp. “Outside it’s a concrete box and inside it’s a wooden box. It’s teak wood, which is warm and inviting.” This mood was further enhanced through the use of indirect lighting (see more on page 36) to create a calm and tranquil interior space. “It allows you to fully absorb the nature from outside. You have to live outdoors and indoors, but remain comfortable.” In fact, there is a definite emphasis on flexibility when it comes to transitions between the different areas of the villas and their purposes. There are no glass walls dividing bathroom and bedroom, and the large glass façades bring the outside firmly into the room. This fluidity is something that Vasu admits takes its inspiration from deep within Thai culture.
Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 27
“I’m not a fan of traditional Thai architecture but I found it very interesting to introduce their multipurpose areas, following the tradition of having one space where you can do everything, it acts as a kitchen, where you watch TV or where your kids sleep. We put that concept into these designs: we didn’t close areas off, but just used sliding doors so that every room of the villa feels more connected.” Indeed, it is this fluidity between the exterior and the interior that stands out for Vasu when asked to pick his favorite part of the resort. “I like the way you see the ocean from the villas, I think the flow from outside to inside really works. Your perspective is widened in front of your bed so you almost feel part of the sea. It all comes back to the concept of the abstract flower, it’s like a flower blooming to receive the sun.”
“You have to live outoors and indoors.” Vasu Virajsilp, architect
4/3/14 12:19 PM
NATURAL FINISH By T.R.O.P The complicated task of landscaping the resort’s grounds fell to leading Thai landscape architectural design studio T.R.O.P. The studio owner Pok Kobkongsanti explains how he helped connect the stark concrete buildings of Casa de La Flora to the natural forms of the land.
The brief: I was contacted to help make the place green but it was difficult. As the land had been bought as three separate plots it was my job to connect the buildings to the land, and to connect the different buildings into one whole. The other crucial issue was privacy, each villa had to have 100% privacy and because the owner loves plants there had to be as much greenery as possible.
The inspiration:
28
My first inspiration was the name of the project, Casa de La Flora. It had to be green. Flora might make you think of flowers, but it made me think of a tree. The owner wanted more flowers but I said no, I didn’t want to emphasize flowers. I emphasized plants. There are some flowers, like oleander, but it’s not a flower garden. I like trees more. I don’t like things that shout “Look at me.” I prefer a bit of green in the background. People who come to the sea don’t want to see a garden. The garden should just make the sea view more beautiful. The sea has to be the hero. If you’re building in the middle of the mountains, it’s different. What people want when they look at the sea is that there is nothing cluttering the view. That’s what I wanted to preserve.
Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 28
“The garden should just make the sea view more beautiful. The sea has to be the hero.” Pok Koblkongsanti, landscape designer
4/3/14 12:19 PM
The design: We tried to make the landscaping complement the architecture. So we tried to blend all the lines and details into one design. Glancing at it you might not realize, but I used what they call “subliminal design.” For example, the walkways feature the same lines as the villa roofs. You might think that they go well together but not realize why. But if you look at it from a bird’s-eye-view you realize they’re the same. Those are the kinds of details I appreciate. I like things to be minimal and simple.
Concrete challenges: The first time I went to the site, everything was just concrete, the space was beautiful, but very hard. Everything was concrete. The roof was concrete, the walkways were concrete. As soon as you emerged from the lobby, you saw these concrete slab roofs and not a single plant. We couldn’t leave it like that, but how to add greenery? I pictured a whole tree, starting with a big trunk, turning into branches, then all the way to the leaves. I used that form, that idea and translated it into the theme for the project. The roofs were already built, they couldn’t bear a heavy load, so we couldn’t plant big trees on them. We planted the smallest plants possible and created a
zigzag pathway of green to the villas. We added things here and there; fixed the decks, the steps, the pools even added artificial turf to cover the roofs. The other issue we had to tackle was privacy. So I designed a special fence for the villas that had two layers, one side was wood, the other foliage. Looking out from inside you see a wooden barrier, looking from the outside you just see trees.
Natural combinations: The site is in a typhoon area. It gets hit every year, so I didn’t want to go against nature. We must follow nature. My most important advisor was the owner Khun Sompong. He would give me advice about what plants we could use, what plants we couldn’t use. Like the sone bai phai (a local pine tree), which is really tough. I’d never heard of it before. We chose pine trees from Phang-nga because they can withstand high salt levels. The oleander is also very tough. They’re at the front entrance of the beach villas. They grow very fast and are salt-hardy. We weren’t able to bring in big trees because everything had already been built, so we had to use small trees and look for plants that would grow quickly.
Favourite elements: I like the restaurant area and the space in front of it, the pool and the zigzag pathways. I feel like the paths are different from anything else in the worldand from anything I’d done before. I created them just for this project and they really became a signature feature. I also like that everything is tailormade. Every detail has been made specifically for this project. People who visit may or may not know that fact, but they will feel that it’s not like any other place. Everything has character, whether it’s the steps, pathways, plants, buildings or the sculptures. They don’t exist at any other hotel.
The zig-zag pathways mimic the same lines as the resorts walls and villa roofs.

Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 31
The inspiration:
The challenges:
I extended the original concept of the house of flowers from the architects. Of course, the theme of flowers is kind of subjective, because there are several different interpretations. For me flowers don’t last forever, they bloom and wilt, they are constantly changing. That’s why our furniture was also designed to be unique, flexible and free-form, as well as being appropriate to customer’s needs. Everything we designed looks to match this concept of flux. We wanted the design of the products to offer a perfect combination between architecture, environment, and space. We designed the furniture to be flexible, foldable, shape-shifting and to seem to change colors and textures from moment to moment. I want all the furniture featured in the resort to have a different aspect and feel morning, noon and night.
One of the biggest things was to create a humble and minimal atmosphere, the design couldn’t be too artistic, but it also had to be unique, special. We chose the best quality products and paid attention to the smallest details. That’s why there are lots of handmade items like the pillows, blankets, tables, seats, even the soap was picked to match the smell of the sea. Everything is placed here for a reason.
The materials: We used handmade aluminium, which is light and won’t rust, because it reflects cultural emotions inspired by the traditional bronze and copper tools of the southern Thai fishermen transformed into furniture. In terms of the wood we opted for teak because its local and because its smell, touch and color really matches the beach and the tropical surroundings.
4/3/14 12:19 PM
Thai inspiration: We avoided clichéd Thai architecture, after all, visitors to the hotel already know they’re in Thailand. We wanted them to feel real Thai uniqueness, not some fake thing. For example, we used an aluminium wax casting process to create our sculptures, which is really just a contemporary adaptation of the traditional methods used to create Buddha images. Plus, at Casa de La Flora you feel the sea everywhere: sleeping, showering, or swimming. We wanted guests to see the unique qualities of Khao Lak, so we also wanted the design to be chill, cozy and simple, to match and represent the local lifestyle of the local people who live with, and by the sea.
Favorite item: I love the flora domes in the pool bar. Before we designed anything, we thought about who would be using them, which is mostly couples. When you’re on honeymoon, you only want to be with your lover. That’s why we tried to create as much private space as possible. Each dome is placed at a different angle, while the design of the canopy ensures privacy yet also provides a magnificent beach view. The perception from each seat is different.

“I wanted the design to match the lifestyles of the local people who live by the sea.” Anon Pairot, product designer
Favorite space: I like the beach villas most because their design helps people feel the flow of time. Every piece of furniture is calculated, from the TV stand to the size of the pillows. It’s all designed to make people feel secure and private while always offering changing viewpoints. It’s like the hotel concept, the flowers, everyone has a different point of view. Flowers are ordinary but extraordinary, beautiful but humble.
Casa highlight: The fact that every time you visit this place, the scene of each room and its atmosphere will be different, no matter what season it is. Casa de La Flora is for non-materialistic people, it’s approachable. It’s very simple but it’s also very different.

EYE FOR DETAI L By Quattro Design
Vichada Sitakalin, partner and design director at leading Thai interior design consultancy Quattro, explains how she used floral inspiration and natural materials to bring a more feminine touch to the resort’s villas and public spaces.
The brief: Once the original designs were completed the owner was slightly concerned that the interiors were very masculine, very modern. The spaces were great but there was a feeling that they needed some life, they needed some color, they needed to add some feminine touches to the rooms because they were a bit too cold. What I did was all the little details, the small touches. Because the space was really nice already, it was a wow space, I didn’t want to do anything that would destroy the original idea of the architect.
The inspiration:
“Inspiration comes from nature, from flowers, from the waves; yet the final artwork creates a very minimal look.” 34
Vichada Sitakalin, interior designer
Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 34
Of course the name, Casa de La Flora, or house of flowers. My first thought was that there’s no flowers at all in the resort, so that was my main inspiration. That led to concepts of using natural, organic and tropical materials. But again, because the space is really minimal and the hotel is very contemporary, whatever I added had to be minimal because I didn’t want to overwhelm the space. I think the bamboo artwork in the lobby and the spa is a good example of what we were trying to achieve. It’s a very organic material. We worked with the Thai artist Korakot Aromdee to create something that gives you a feeling of a tropical resort, which is inspired from nature, from flowers, from the waves; yet the final artwork creates a very minimal look.

The paintings’ signifigance?
Favorite item:
Each room was given an individual name, and that was taken from the name of different flowers used in royal ceremonies. So we worked with a leading photographer to put very contemporary, and pretty abstract, images of these specific flowers in the individual rooms. The end result was great because they didn’t come out looking too girly and the colors and style really blended with the existing space.
Aside from the bamboo installations, I really like the little elements that we created: the lanterns, the mosquito repellent container and the flower vases made from aluminium. The lantern, especially the handle, was inspired by the lines and the form of the logo. The mosquito repellent and the vase were both derived from a flower form, but we did them in aluminium to give a modern finish. We also added a noughts and crosses (tic-tac-toe) game for fun, but it uses a flower and the resort logo instead of the typical X and O. I think all these elements add to the guests’ experience because they are very unique and different to anything they’ve seen anywhere else.
Favorite space: The lobby, because you feel that there’s this calmness there and I really like what we did with the bamboo artwork. I think it really adds to the space, the lobby is very geometric so a free-form artwork really softens the space. But I must admit I also love that overall feeling of calmness you experience when you’re anywhere in the resort.

M O OD E NH A N CE M E N T By Architectural Professional Lighting Design (APLD) On being selected: Usually architects or interior designers do the lighting design themselves, so I have to thank the owner Khun Sompong and his family for asking me to get involved. I guess it was because I had previously worked with them on their showroom at Crystal Park, and on a shopping plaza in Chonburi.
The brief: The lighting was based on two criteria: function and aesthetics. The aesthetic side is about enhancing the architecture, the interior and the general ambience. The functional side relates to issues like safety, use of space and the other needs and requirements of running a resort.
One essential, yet wonderfully understated, element of the overall ambience of Casa de La Flora is the subtle yet effective lighting. But according to the coowner and head lighting designer of APLD Kanokporn Nuchsaeng, they’d prefer it if you didn’t notice the lights at all.
The inspiration: All my inspiration came from the project and the architect’s vision. If you don’t share the same vision, the lighting might push the project in a different direction or become a separate element. For example, the architects wanted the architecture to float up off the ground; for the lights to subtly bleed out from interiors; they didn’t want direct lighting; they didn’t want light sources to be visible.
The challenges:
“There a blurring of indoor and outdoor; it all feels like one space.” Kanokporn Nuchsaeng, lighting designer
36
Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 36
It was difficult, because it is quite a limiting space. During the day it’s fine because you can see the surrounding nature—the ocean, the trees, the sky—so it doesn’t feel like a concrete environment. But at night, the lighting has to try and make those concrete structures less visible, to help people feel at ease. It’s different from some projects where they want the structures to stand out. This project is also full of many individual units, so it was important to protect guest privacy. You have to make them feel like people aren’t watching them. You also have to make them feel safe. We solved those kinds of problems by making all the lighting very low to the ground. There are only a few points with wall-mounted lights, to help people find public areas like the restaurant and spa.
The materials: Being by the sea most of the lamps have to be made of marine-grade stainless steel, which is very expensive and it’s difficult to use. And it’s the same throughout the resort, because during the monsoon season the rain falls almost
4/3/14 12:20 PM
horizontally. So we had to choose the most durable materials. Normal aluminum lamps wouldn’t last a year before they would start to rust, so we had to use new materials like polycarbonate.
Changing moods: It’s interesting how the space can transform from day to night. During the day there’s a lot of sunlight and we barely need the lighting. So when people check-in during the day time they have one experience. Then, at night, the mood changes. People might think the architecture looks hard, that it’s all stone and wood, but at night that feeling changes. The lighting at the reception accents the vertical, while we use indirect light to draw the eye to certain points, like the artwork. I also like the restaurant at night, where the focal points are floating artworks on the walls. There is a blurring of indoor and outdoor; it all feels like one space.
Casa_D3_TP_V3.indd 37
Lighting and nature: In terms of the landscape, we tried to create a natural feel. Say there’s a stone wall and 20 meters of foliage, we don’t need to shine a light on all 20 meters of plants. In landscaping, if you use too much lighting it makes people feel uneasy. The environment is the selling point, but just because there are 20 coconut trees doesn’t mean you need lighting on all of them. I don’t really think the lighting should stand out.
Favorite space: The restaurant. The atmosphere is very relaxed; you feel like you can sit there for as long as you like without feeling any pressure. In the future there’s also going to be a bar on the roof above, which I think will have a very nice ambience, because you’ll be able to see the sky and stars.

But as well as making life easy for you, the resort team also wants to make it extra special, which is where the huge range of unique trips and activities come into play. Alll of these tours are tailor-made to truly match the desires and interests of the guests and provide once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The options cover everything from cooking classes to deep-sea fishing trips and elephant tours to sunset cruises. Highlights include snorkeling and diving trips to the stunning nearby islands of Surin and Similan, taking advantage of the resort’s choice of three boats and private pier, the only one along this stretch of coastline. There’s also the option to explore lesser-known marine worlds, whether that’s visiting the remote and unspoilt delights of Tachai Island, or taking a short ride along the coast to relax on the pristine sand of the resort’s own private beach. Inland there are also plenty of choices to keep guests entertained, with a visit to the nearby national parks of Khao Sok and Khao Lak Lam Ru a must for nature lovers thanks to their stunning scenery and rich fauna and flora. Other tour options include heritage visits to the old town of Takuapa, trips to the nearby temples and local night market or a visit to one of the Tsunami Memorials that dot this coastline. Of course there is also the possibility of getting more personalized activities. Whether it’s organizing a romantic candlelit dinner at the base of a waterfall, chartering a seaplane to whisk guests to the island of Phi Phi or organizing a surprise second wedding ceremony for a couple of newlyweds, you can count on the Casa de La Flora team to work their magic to make it happen.

The Art of Dining La Aranya is Casa de La Flora’s unique seafront restaurant, serving up international dishes with a distinctly Thai twist. Open to the elements on two sides, it offers the chance to enjoy the tropical breeze and the sound of the waves along with spectacular views over the Andaman Sea. The team of highly trained chefs are dedicated to using the very best ingredients and most refined techniques to offer guests classic and comforting options from simple pastas, pizzas and sandwiches to more complex offerings like pan-fried Wagyu steak and roast rack of lamb. In their bid to find the freshest and most sustainable ingredients the chefs pay regular visits to the local market, which is reflected in the numerous seasonal dishes on the menu, many of them featuring an Asian, and particularly Thai focus. That gives you the chance to savor authentic local treats like chicken with cashew nuts, pad Thai with shrimps or khao pad larb (spicy meat salad). Add in the long and extensive drinks menu, covering everything from energy-boosting, thirst-quenching smoothies and classic cocktails to the finest wine and champagne, along with the impeccable Thai hospitality, and you’ve got the perfect spot to come dine and unwind while watching the sun set over the waves.

Ingfah Created by the Thai-based design studio Integrated Field, Ingfah is the striking lounge bar and restaurant located just over the road from the main resort. It takes inspiration from the two concepts of the sky, “Fah,” and the idea of dining/drinking lying down, “Ing.” This is reflected in the various white pods that dot the lawn, which have been designed to imitate the classic Thai flying lanterns, changing colors to suit the mood and the music, for a magical touch. As well as experiencing the amazing cocktails and chill club music, guests can also sample the intriguing set menus, which offer tapas style plates of Thai and fusion dishes.
Library For those looking for some holiday reading or just wanting to check in with folks back home then the library and business center is a relaxing space that blends a warm, homey vibe with well-stocked shelves and a comprehensive range of titles, covering everything from thrillers to business tomes.

ne look at the bold, pioneering design of Casa de La Flora makes it clear that this is a project that is all about pushing boundaries and finding ways to introduce new concepts, techniques and technologies. As a result the project and the resort features a number of extremely innovative methods, systems and equipment to solve problems and create sustainable solutions.

Bespoke Design
Casa de La Flora’s central infinity edge pool is chemical free thanks to the use of a special O3 (triple O) Water treatment system, designed to naturally remove common containments such as iron, manganese, acidity, bacteria and hydrogen sulphide and leave you with water that’s clean enough to drink. It works by continuously ozonating, filtering and circulating the entire contents of the pool 24 hours a day, much like the water found in a pure mountain stream. The result is clean water that is free of any irritating and harmful chemicals.
Casa Connected is a unique cutting-edge in-room entertainment system powered by Apple. Running through a Mac mini the result is all about giving you total choice and total control. You can watch the latest movies, listen to music, scroll through the hotel directory, check your bill or browse the internet on the 46” flat screen TV, all via a simple click of the handy remote or wireless keyboard. Whether it’s Facebook, YouTube, or just checking up on your email it’s all available at the tap of a button from the comfort of your bed.
One area that the commitment to innovation is extremely clear is through the bespoke, tailor-made details found all over the resort. From the striking artworks in the communal walkways to the TV stands, everything has been specifically designed for the resort by the team of talented young artists, designers and architects. It has resulted in a destination that is unlike anything else in Thailand and stands as a testament for the innovation and creative potential of a dynamic new wave of young professional Thai artisans and designers.

ituated at the heart of a national park, it was always essential that this project was developed with a sympathetic and respectful understanding of the natural surroundings. That didn’t just mean minimum disruption to the environment during the construction but also making sure the design and techniques used offered sustainable
solutions in the long term, to save energy, water and help protect the general environment.Solar pads incorporated into the design, collecting and reusing rain water, energy saving air conditioning systems and helping preserve the local mangrove swamps all demonstrate that protecting and regenerating the environment is a key priority.
