Urban Bites casual dining & cafés 2017 Bangkok has undergone a veritable revolution of late when it comes to brunch-y bites, excellent coffee and fuss-free comfort food that’s low on pretense while big on flavors. Not so long ago, it was a bit of a relief to get a real espresso as opposed to instant mix. Today, you can expect a few different varietals or some exotic single-origin beans on the blackboard. Cold-drip Ethiopian? But of course. Similarly, menus can no longer offer just the odd eggs Benedict, once an exotic and exciting dish on our shores. The bacon must come from a local artisan, the salmon must be marinated in a secret blend of herbs and the muffin must be made from buttermilk and unicorn tears. Truly, there has never been a better time in Bangkok to eat breakfast in a restaurant. Decor, too, is keeping pace. Brooklyn residents would struggle to tell our subway tiles and dangling lightbulbs from theirs. And what better environment to sip on macchiato than surrounded by blond wood and apronclad staff. We hope you enjoy reading the first edition of Urban Bites as much as we did writing it. You’ve got enough coffee shops and bistros in your hands to keep your snacks, lunches and breakfasts both happy and delicious for 12 months—which is when we hope to be back with a new round of matcha lattes and honey toast. In the meantime, let’s do brunch?
