Borobudur and Prambanan Temples - Both enlisted on World Heritage list in 1991 - Today nearly millions of tourists come to the temple each year - Located close to Gunung Merapi, Gunung Merbabu, Gunung Sumbing, Gunung Sindoro and Gunung Kelud -Vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions etc
Challenges at the Borobudur and Prambanan World Heritage Sites
Borobudur and Prambanan WH sites are exposed to natural disasters (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions etc)
Disaster can impact on the conservation of the sites. There are also ongoing concerns about conservation of stone reliefs at Borobudur
Disasters also affect vulnerable members of the community, especially youth, who rely on them for employment
A further challenge is the lack of sustainable development for communities around the WH sitesmost tourists never visit the surrounding areas Nagaoka, 2013
UNESCOᾼs Intervention following the 2010 Mt. Merapi disaster 1. Execution of an emergency cleaning operation with full participation of the local community. Over 500 community members involved. (December 2010 – November 2011) 2. Restoration/Conservation Work and Capacity Building at the Borobudur Temple Compounds (2011 – now) 3. Enhancement of the livelihoods of affected local communities in the rehabilitation of the cultural & ecotourism and creative industry sector in the region (2011 – now) 4. Training Workshop on Disaster Risk Preparedness and Management at UNESCO World Heritage Sites (2013)
UNESCO’s intervention in Borobudur area (Livelihood)
Enhancement of creative local industries and promotion of sustainable tourism around Borobudur through: Provision of a series of training to community members in Borobudur (especially women and youth) for innovative product creation – Establishment of a community-run gallery and training centre in partnership with the community and stakeholders in Karanganyar Village, Borobudur – The completion of a cultural mapping and artisan baseline survey around Borobudur and its associated map to promote sustainable tourism in the area –
Youth Activities Conducted for Cultural Heritage Awareness 1. Under the support of English First (EF) conducted Cultural Heritage Education among Young People Programme Borobudur, Central Java, 2 - 3 July 2011 (Visit to the temples & museum, participated in cleaning activity, tree planting activity, engagement with local community) 2. Under the support of English First (EF) conducted UNESCO’s World Heritage Education Programme for Young People in Bali from 24 to 26 June, 2012 (Organization of an introductory workshop, Visit to the proposed World Heritage site – Joined Harvesting & Cultural Activity)
Lessons Learned 1.
The organizations of the youth programmes have to be well coordinated and planned to avoid logistical problems that will disturb the process
2.
To deliver cultural heritage educational sessions special care usually needed to simplify the often complicated information into more understandable and engaging presentations and activities. The participants’ understanding was of prime importance, so an entertaining and youngpeople friendly programme is vital for the success of the programme
3.
Outreach to the community is key and engage them throughout the process!
4.
Sustainability of the intervention shall be well considered and thought

3. Work closely with the communities and the communityrun-gallery where the youth will learn more about community empowerment activities surround the World Heritage sites and how to improve communities livelihood .

Panasonic, the Ministry of Education and Culture and UNESCO partner together to address these challenges/issues through the project: Supporting Youth Livelihood Development through Education and Training at the Borobudur and Prambanan World Heritage Sites Three main proposed actions are: Action 1: Youth Forum on World Heritage and Sustainability Action 2: Capacity Training/Education for Livelihood Development Action 3: Use of environmentally friendly technology
