Designed, owned and operated independently by Soo Chan, founder of Singapore-based SCDA Architects, and his wife Ling Fu. Situated near Tanah Lot Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Bali’s most sacred places, the environmentally and culturally sustainable resort melds soothing natural surrounds with contemporary Balinese design elements, polished teak, and intricate terracotta tiles created by local artisans. Soo Chan said Soori Bali’s award-winning architecture drew inspiration from nearby villages and a stunning natural landscape. A dormant volcano, Mount Batukaru, towers in the near distance. Volcanic stone abounds in the region, so much so that Soo quarried light grey stone from nearby sources as the foundation for the resort’s buildings. 11

‘The Orang Rimba’

TRIBAL PEOPLE OF

INDONESIA 30

T

he Orang Rimba (‘people of the forest’) are a much smaller population of people (~3000) who live in the upstream regions of Jambi and South Sumatran. They

have a unique, diverse economy, which shifts in and out of two base subsistence strategies: swidden farming and a very nomadic life based on foraging wild yams. This is traditionally combined with hunting, trapping, fishing, and the collection of forest products for trade. For many, part-time rubber tapping and participation in logging has gradually replaced the collection of forest products. Orang Rimba life is characterized by small and changing camps, which can be tiny when digging for wild yams, but more commonly is based around an extended family, and can include several larger families whenever swidden farming. Their social relations are very egalitarian, while hierarchies are largely based upon age, gender and knowledge of religion and cultural law. 31

Bringing Tana Toraja Closer to Bali Transportation Minister Seeking Make Direct Fights Between Bali and Tana Toraja by Improving Pong Tiku Airport.

T

he Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, wants to create a new tourism axis-

package

for

the

current

year

including Bali- Toraja –Wakatobi. To help achieve this, the Minister is supporting efforts to develop one of the airport runways at Toraja during the current year. As

reported

by

Kompas.com,

Minister Sumadi announced his plans during a visit to the official residence of the South Sulawesi Governor, Syahrul Yasin Limpo, on Friday, February 17, 2017. Toraja is served by two airports: Pong Tiku and Buntukunik. The Minister wants to extend the Pong Tiku runway by 100 meters to a new length of 1,400 meters at an estimated cost of Rp. 100 billion. “The development of Pong Tiku will be done in stages and begin this year. Next year we have budgeted Rp. 200 billion,” explained Sumadi. The lengthening of the runway will allow ATR aircraft to land at Pong Tiku and the possibility of direct flights from Bali. “In this way, tourists will be able to purchase a complete tourism package connecting Bali – Toraja and Wakatobi,” explained the Minister.

32

Speaking before an Indonesian Shipowners Association meeting (INSA) in Makassar, the Minister of Transportation emphasized to his audience that Tana Toraja remains a leading Indonesian tourism destination. Because of this, he said it is the responsibility of his Ministry to develop the transportation infrastructure to allow Toraja’s tourism potential to be fully realized. In response, the Regent of Tana Toraja, Nicodemus Biringkanae, said he hopes that the development of the Buntukunik Airport can be realized. Adding: “Air transportation is the only fast access (to their homes) for the people of Toraja to the capital of the Province and other areas. This is because the Torajans do not enjoy sea access and a land trip to Makassar can take up to 8 hours. According

to

Nicodemus,

air

transportation to Toraja will increase the number of tourist coming to Toraja. Currently, Tana Toraja welcomes around 200,000 tourists each year, while 300,000 visit North Toraja. While plans are for Pong Tiku Airport to be extended to 1,400 meters, further plans are to make the Buntukunik airstrip 1,900 meters long. Meanwhile, officials want to make a new 2-kilometer road connecting the Buntukunik Airport with the SulawesiToraja highway.
