INDONESIAN th Independece Day
71 I
ndonesian Independence Day will be celebrated on August 17th, 2016. The day when the proclaimers of Indonesian independence-Soekarno and Hatta proclaimed the independence of Indonesia from the Dutch and Japanese authorities. People decorate their house and the streets with red and white ornaments which represent the colors of Indonesian flags. The Indonesian has various ways to celebrate it, both formally and informally. Formally, Indonesians usually celebrates the Independence Day by doing flag ceremonies in schools and offices. Students are gathered in the field wearing uniforms, singing national anthems, praying for the late national heroes and reread the proclamation text. Similar activities are carried out at offices; both in governmental and private offices where workers gather to flag ceremonies in front of their offices. 14
A
fter the flag ceremonies, the more informal celebrations start with all kind of competitions taking place. The competitions include kerupuk(chips) eating, climbing palm trees greased with oil, sack races, getting nailed tied to a string into a bottle and many other party games. In addition to being entertaining all the games also has symbolic value and serves as reminder of the time before Indonesia had its independence. For example, eating kerupuk is a reminder of how people lived in poverty during the colonization. Climbing the palm tree symbolizes the effort it took to gain independence. The competitions are joined by people of all ages, genders, and professions. The young and old, men and women, students and workers, the rich and commoners are all joining in.
I
n Bali, the celebration of Independence Day is not as excessive as in other Indonesian provinces. The Balinese usually decorate their house in red and white decoration and put a flag in front of their house and school kids and workers attend the flag. But unlike most of Indonesia competitions are only in
some areas, mainly in the larger towns. Some of the younger Balinese marks Independence Day with concerts or philanthropic acts like visiting an orphanage, a senior citizens home or by donating blood.

TRIBAL PEOPLE INDONESIA
The Nias
West Coast of North Sumatra
N
ias people are an ethnic group native to Nias, an island off the west coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia. In the Nias language, the Nias people are known as Ono Niha; which literally means ‘descendants of human’. While Nias island is known as Tanö Niha, whereTanö means ‘land’ in the Nias language. The Nias people are a community that still actively lives within the norms and practices of the indigenous culture. Customary law of the Nias people is generally referred to as fondrakö, which regulates all aspects of life from birth to death. Historical evidence of megalithic structures and carvings of stones that are found in the interior of the island proved that ancient Nias people practiced megalith culture. The caste system is also recognized in Nias society, whereby the highest level out of the 12 levels in the Nias caste system is Balugu In order to reach this level of the caste, one must be able to carry out big festivals by inviting thousands of people and slaughtering 20
of thousands of pigs for several days. According to the people of Nias, one of the mythical origins of the Nias tribe comes from a tree of life called Tora Sigaru`a which is located at a place called Tetehöli Ana’a. According to the myth, it is said that the arrival of the first human on Nias island began in the days of King Siaro, whose nine sons had been banished out of Tetehöli Ana’a for fighting over the throne. Hence the nine sons of King Siaro were considered as the first people to set foot on the island of Nias.

he 500-metre-wide stretch of Seminyak beach in front of The Oberoi, Bali is visited each year by an endangered species of sea turtle - the Olive Ridley or Lepidochelys Olivacea. The Olive Ridley was named for the olive color of its heart-shaped shell, and is one of the smallest of the sea turtles with adults reaching up to 70 cm in length and weighing up to 50 kg.
Female turtles come ashore to lay a clutch of eggs between May and October, usually at night, which she then covers with sand and returns to the sea. Her job is done. The Oberoi, Bali safeguards the turtle eggs from predators by relocating the nest to a patch of sand within the hotel premises. After an incubation period of 45 - 50 days under the sand, baby turtles emerge from their ping-pong ball like shells. Newborn hatchlings are cared for at The Oberoi’s saltwater turtle sanctuary where they are fed and become strong swimmers. The baby turtles were released after grown between 10 days to 2 weeks old.

Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas
V
irtuoso Week is an annual event, nearing its 30th anniversary. It’s held in Las Vegas, mainly at the Bellagio, although in recent years, events have expanded to Vdara Resort and Spa and will be expanding to neighboring Aria as well. This year, more than 4,800 total attendees are expected. At the event’s core are interactions between travel advisors and travel providers (hotels, cruise lines, tour companies, and more). During these four-minute appointments – think of them as speeddating for the luxury travel industry – providers share what’s new, what’s hot, and what’s 45
perfect for the advisors’ clients. By the end of the week, an advisor will have met with as many as 2,000 different travel providers, collecting ideas for travel experiences to share with their clients. “A lot of the travel bookings we do during the year come from the relationships we make at Virtuoso Travel Week,” says Jupiter, Florida-based advisor Stacy Hart. Virtuoso Week’s goal is to foster connections and knowledge, which advisors can use to work with you to craft a better trip.
Events preceding VTW’s core networking focus on professional-development opportunities for travel advisors. This year, offerings include: • An active- and specialty-tour-operator expo for VAST-focused advisors • How to be a Virtuoso Life superstar by designing trips that would shine if profiled in the magazine • An expert panel on wellness travel • Understanding sustainable tourism • Destination-specialist training from various tourism boards • Client-relationship building • What millennial travelers want And that’s just a small sampling. These educational sessions, before Virtuoso Week’s official opening session on Sunday afternoon, train advisors to maximize themselves, their clients, and their connections to different types of travel. Some call Virtuoso Week “the Super Bowl of luxury travel” – David Hansen, Virtuoso’s senior vice president of meetings and events, calls it a “supernova” event – but regardless of how you define it, the aim of everyone involved is to make sure that your travel experiences, whenever and wherever they occur, are exactly what you want.
