CHINA FLIGHT TO REMOTE ISLAND OF INDONESIA
“The remote island of Morotai, in Indonesia’s North Maluku province, could soon be connected with China”
Indonesia’s Antara news agency reports that Citilink, the low-cost subsidiary of Garuda Indonesia, is planning to launch flights between Morotai and mainland China, as part of the government’s efforts to drive tourism to more parts of the country. Morotai is one of 10 “new” tourism destinations earmarked by the Indonesian government for development. A local official told Antara that Citilink has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Morotai administration for the launch of the new international flight. While the Chinese destination for the route has not been confirmed, the official said the service would likely be routed through Manado, North Sulawesi. For the flight to be launched however, Morotai’s airport would need to be upgraded. Currently the airport is only connected Manado and Ternate, another island in the Malukus. Very few international tourists currently visit Morotai, but Indonesia is planning to capitalise on its natural beauty and diving opportunities. As well as Morotai, Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism is planning to drive more international visitors to Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Tanjung Kelayang on Belitung Island, Tanjung Lesung in Banten, Jakarta’s Thousand Islands, the Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru in East Java, Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara, Wakatobi in Sulawesi, and Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara.

S
ean Borland is 32 and from Glasgow. You can’t miss that fact. Despite leaving Glasgow at the age of 5, he has a really strong accent. His story is complicated. I had fun going through my notes and trying to get them in some sort of chronological order. But here goes. I said he left Glasgow at the age of 5 – this was to move with his family to Crete. Then for university he went back to Glasgow to study Business. He worked for Specsavers, getting several promotions and ending up in Malaga in Spain. He had always been interested in Magic since the age of about 10. On Crete he knew a retired American Magician, who taught him some tricks. At University he was a good amateur magician.

nyway one evening in Spain, he went to a club, and offered his services as a magician for a night. They liked his act so much, that they asked him to work once a week. He added a fine dining restaurant to his venues, and decided at the age of 25, this was what he wanted to do. So he left Specsavers and became a professional magician. From there he moved to China to refine his art, and from there to Sydney in Australia.

n Sydney he worked at some prestigious events and venues. He worked on the opening night of Madame Tussauds in Sydney, he worked for Coca Cola, for Volkswagen, for the V Bar (a famous club), etc. Then in the early 2013, he Googled “Yoga classes in Siem Reap” (another of his interests). The search turned up the Hariharalaya Retreat, and on the 2nd of February, he came there. So what about his magic? Sean specializes in close up magic, and he loves improvising. In Spain it was referred to as “Jazz Magic”. He can perform to a table full of people or a large audience. But he works through skill and making you not see what he’s doing. It’s the art of distraction. His skill is patent for all to see. I attended a show
he put on for the patrons of Hariharalaya and was amazed. I’ve studied a little magic (mainly as a boy) and could see some of the tricks, but this was superb. He uses a combination of a little sleight of hand, NLP (neuro linguistic programming), body language, and other similar techniques. All in all it makes a very different show. I asked how he masters the moves. He replied that it takes practice. One trick he told me took 6 months of practice, day in, day out, to get right. Only with this amount of dedication can you perfect a trick. To that end he reminded me of the circus performers, who spend years getting on top of their repertoire. It’s all about dedication, and Sean is dedicated.
PRIME PLAZA’S NEW MENJANGAN DINASTY RESORT

ndonesia’s Prime Plaza Hotels & Resorts will open a new glamping resort in Bali’s north coast this summer.
Scheduled to launch in August 2016, Menjangan Dynasty Resort, Beach Camp & Dive Centre will be spread across 16 hectares of land on an isolated peninsula, stretching down to a sandy beach. It will feature 24 beach tents plus four cliff tent villas which have either one or two bedrooms and come equipped with private pools.

hese are safari tents that have been imported from South Africa. All tents come fitted with flat screen TVs, DVD players, mini bars and bathrooms with showers. Resort facilities include a large infinityedged swimming pool, with a waterfall that cascades into a lower pool, plus a beach
club and bar, a dive centre, spa, exercise room, and space for weddings and events. Menjangan Dynasty Resort will become Prime Plaza’s 11th property in Indonesia, and its sixth in Bali following the Bali Dynasty, Amadea Resort & Villas, Sanur Paradise Plaza Suites, Sanur Paradise Plaza Hotel and PrimeBiz Kuta.

The Madurese
T
he Madurese (sometimes Madurace or Madhure) also known as Orang Madura and Suku Madura in Indonesian are an ethnic group originally from the island of Madura now found in many parts of Indonesia, where they are the third-largest ethnic group by population. Common to most Madurese throughout the archipelago is the Islamic religion and the use of the Madurese language. The Madurese are a religious ethnicity, often affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama, a moderate Indonesian Muslim organization.
Pesantren has a pivotal role in Madurese life. While the Madurese have their roots on Madura off the northeastern coast of Java, the majority of Madurese do not now live on that island. The Madurese people have migrated out of Madura over several hundred years, mostly driven by poor agricultural resources in their home island. The majority have settled on Java, where an estimated six million Madurese live, especially in East Java where they form about half the population.

THE AMAZING DANCE FESTIVAL LOMBOK “Lombok International Dance Festival is the brainchild of Marcel De Rijk”
M
arcel happens to be the owner of Puri Mas Boutique Resort & Spa, but his background couldn’t be further from the hospitality industry. Marcel has been a Dutch Ballroom & Latin Dance Champion in his youth, and is currently a renowned international adjudicator, traveling the dance circuits judging some of the top couples in the world. Having been a pioneer of hotel development on the island of Lombok, around 30 years ago, Marcel has seen the go through many changes surfing through the ups and downs of the tourism industry. In a major effort to encourage tourists to the island during one of the down spots, Marcel had the idea of holding a “Holiday & Dance” event. This was around 10 years ago, and the event has just mushroomed into one of the islands biggest international annual events. This years event will be held on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July, and is no exception. Lombok will be the host to Professional and Amateur Ballroom and Latin Dancers and Adjudicators from approximately 18 countries. Mozaic Beach Club on Batubelig Beach in Seminyak Closes its Doors

n June 2, 2016, The Mozaic Beach Blub - a Seminyak Beach and Bali Culinary icon – closed its door after four years of business. The website for the fine-dining landmarks posted an announcement On June 2, 2016, that said, “We regret to advise you that effective as of today, the Mozaic Beach Club, Jalan Pantai Batu Belig, is no longer operating.” Adding, “The decision to close was not an easy one, and we regret any inconvenience this may cause you.” Established in mid-2012, The Mozaic Beach Club opened on Batubelig Beach following on from the phenomenal success of the Mozaic Restaurant Gastonomique in Ubud. Offering beach and poolside dining or a more formal dining room in its main building, the elegant restaurant was a culinary stage for the formidable cooking talents of its founders: Chris Salans and James Ephraim. Those disappointed by the closure of The Mozaic Beach Club will find some solace in the continuing operation of The Mozaic Restaurant Gastronomique and Spice by Chris Salans – both in Ubud, Central Bali.
THE MENJANGAN ENTRANCE FEE
L
atest regulation issued by the Ministry of Forestry stated that all visitors to West Bali National Park will be required to pay an entrance / access fee to the National Park as it’s the case with other National Parks across the country. Such fees are: • Rp. 200,000 per person per stay in the case of foreign nationals. • Rp. 10,000 per person per stay in the case of Indonesian nationals or Kitas Holders. While the authorities are still in the process of appointing a full time representative of the National Park at the entrance gate, we have been entrusted with the collection of such fee, which
will be charged to the guest’s room account for settlement upon departure from the resort while the ticket itself will be presented upon arrival at time of check in. The entrance fee is applicable every time the guest wishes to enter West Bali National Park. Besides entitlement to stay at The Menjangan, the ticket allows the guest to enjoy all the wonders of the National Park including without limitation trekking, snorkeling, bird watching, etc as well as visit to Menjangan Island. The ticket shall be produced for inspection by the park rangers whenever required also during guest visit to Menjangan Island in order to avoid double charge.

Instructions • Place lamb in a saucepan of water. Bring to the boil. Drain, then rinse in cold water and pat dry with paper towel. • Place spice mix ingredients in a small food processor and process to a coarse paste. • Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and add spice paste. Add cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, galangal, lemongrass, lime leaves and
salam leaves, and cook for 7 minutes or until fragrant. • Increase heat to high, then add lamb and cook for 4 minutes or until well coated in the spice paste. Reduce heat to medium, add coconut milk and 750 ml water, and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low and cook for 1½ hours or until lamb is tender.
Ingredients • 1.5 kg lamb shoulder, bone in, cut into 4 cm pieces • 2 tbsp vegetable oil • 2 cardamom pods • 3 cloves • 1 cinnamon quill • 5 cm-piece galangal , grated • 2 lemongrass stalks, bruised • 3 kaffir lime leaves • 3 salam leaves • 600 ml coconut milk • 400 ml coconut cream • Fried Asian eschalots , lontong (compressedrice cakes) , or steamed white rice and shrimp crackers, to serve
Spice mix • 5 long red chillies, roughly chopped • 10 small Asian red eschalots, roughly chopped • 5 garlic cloves, roughly chopped • 5 candle nuts, chopped • 2 cm-piece ginger, chopped • 2 cm-piece turmeric, chopped • 2 tbsp coriander seeds • ½ tsp ground cumin •1 tsp white pepper • 1 tbsp coconut sugar or palm sugar • Increase heat to medium, add coconut cream and bring to the boil. Remove and discard cinnamon and lemongrass stalks. • Scatter fried Asian eschalots over curry and serve with rice cakes, cooked according to packet directions, and shrimp crackers.
NOTE Galangal is available from Asian food shops and greengrocers. Fried Asian eschalots and candle nuts are available from Asian food shops. Candle nuts must be cooked before eating. Lontong (compressed rice cakes) are sold as uncooked rice in individual perforated plastic packets. They are available from Indonesian food shops. Coconut sugar is available from selected health food shops and Asian food shops.
