TRIBAL PEOPLE OF INDONESIA

The Tau Taa Wana

T

he Tau Taa Wana is a sub-group of the numerous tribal people who speak variations of the Ta’a or Pamona

language of Eastern Sulawesi. The Tau Taa Wana people refer to themselves as Tao Taa, as in tao means “people” and taa means “not”. But most outsiders refer them as To Wana which means “people in the forest” because of their social image as a community residing in forests.

The Tau Taa Wana people are an indigenous tribe who live in small villages or lipu’s around the Bulang and Bongka River. Since the year 2000, the Wana have implemented a rotational farming system as means of maintaining themselves. Before this they lived as a nomadic tribe in the forests. 30

Tumpek Uduh

Tumpek Uduh also known as Tumpek Wariga or Tumpek Pengatag devoted to Sanghyang Sangkara, Lord of all food - plants. This is a day dedicated to the blessing of plants in Bali. It’s especially for those that produce fruits and flowers. On this day, households bless their gardens, farms and plantations. In South Bali the trees are dressed in traditional Balinese clothes, complete with a headband, tile udeng, a kilt-like kamben, and a special scarf, saput, as a belt. Then the tree is hit ceremonially with a hammer to notify it that offerings are nearby and to ask it to produce abundant fruit. This is meant for successful harvests in lead up to the Galungan

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple Piodalan The Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is both a famous picturesque landmark and a significant temple complex located on the western side of the Beratan Lake in Bedugul, central Bali. The whole Bedugul area is actually a favorite cool upland weekend and holiday retreat for locals and island visitors alike from the southern and urban areas, as it is strategically located, connecting the island’s north and south. Ulun Danu Beratan, literally ‘the source temple of Lake Beratan’, is easily the island’s most iconic sanctuary sharing the scenic qualities with the seaside temples of Uluwatu and Tanah Lot.

of

Galungan, which commemorates the triumph of Dharma over Adharma, or

good against evil, this May 29 to 31. Second in significance after the Nyepi or Saka New Year, this observance comes twice a Gregorian year, as the Balinese use a 210day calendar system known as the Pawukon that is the basis for their daily rituals, temple anniversaries

and

holidays.

Galungan

is

celebrated again December 25-27. This year the Galungan festivity starts on a Tuesday on May 29 and December 25, when bamboo poles decorated with young coconut leaf decorations line the streets all over Bali. This is a unique welcome to Bali if you happen to be on the island around this time, and usually lasts until Kuningan, another associated observance that comes 10 days after on June 9. Traditionally, Galungan day sees the slaughtering of pigs for communal feasts, as well as baking traditional rice cakes and erecting iconic ‘penjor’ bamboo poles. 40

These intricately decorated poles, naturally curved at the top, comprise harvest items such as rice, fruits, coconuts and coconut leaves. The men of the households erect their ‘artwork’ at each household gate on the eve, resulting in an impressive view throughout all village roads. Celebrants

Vesak Festival in Indonesia A traditional Buddhist ritual

D

espite making up less than one percent of the present population, Buddhists in Indonesia have a history

stretching back to the sixth century (CE). With the only major religion to surpass this being Hinduism, the traditions of Buddhism and their worship have left a lasting impression on Indonesia that is very much visible to this day. Vesak (or Waisak in Indonesian) is one of the most important religious festivals in the Buddhist calendar. Commonly thought of as the day of the Buddha’s birth, it also marks his attainment of Nirvana and physical death. Observed at the occurrence of a full moon in May or June it is celebrated as a public holiday in Indonesia. The festivities are marked in central Java by an evening procession from Mendut temple, via Pawon (another major temple), before finishing at the vast Borobodur, site of the single largest Buddhist complex in the world. Monks and pilgrims walk the trail between the temples with offerings and candles, converging on Borobodur and marking the zenith of the full moon with prayer and three ceremonial revolutions of the central stupa (the tower or mound that is the focus of meditation or worship in Buddhism). Lanterns are traditionally released into the night sky as the ritual draws to a close. 42

Away from the centers of Buddhism in Indonesia, adherents are expected to make charitable offerings of food to monks, and generally observe, and reflect on, the teachings of the Buddha more closely. This can include a strict vegetarian diet and contributing to the cleaning and decoration of local temples. Borobudur is the most visited tourist attraction in Indonesia, and the chance to observe the Vesak festival at this stunning UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most exciting opportunities that Indonesia’s wealth of religions has to offer.

Part of worldwide hospitality company, Hakkasan Group, Omnia Dayclub is an offshoot of the group’s Omnia Nightclub collection worldwide, with locations that include Las Vegas and San Diego. At the new venue in Uluwatu, the day club is set right next to Hakkasan’s premier dining spot, Sake no Hana, serving modern takes on classical Japanese delights, including sushi, sashimi, and toban and kamameshi delights, courtesy of its original restaurant in Mayfair, London. The launch of Omnia Day Club in Bali sees the next stage in the group’s expansion into Southeast Asia, following similar openings of its three brands, including a Hakkasan restaurant in Jakarta. This all-day dining and lounging twist to its worldwide nightclub collection will be a great addition to Bali’s own offerings for cool chill out spots, particularly along the exotic and luxurious cliff edge resort area of south Bali. 48
