Further, we plan to involve the President of Indonesia to become our influencer and endorser in the promotion of Wakatobi, especially for its breathtaking Marine Tourism potentials. One way to achieve this is by dedicating a dive spot to the president” explained Nadir, Head of the Office of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Wakatobi Regency. Perang Tipat Bantal /

The Rice Wars

T

his century-old tradition features the villagers of Kapal, Bali, which gather in front of the village temple where prayers

and blessings take place for the full moon of the fourth month in the Balinese calendar and proceed towards the foyer and streets where they divide into two groups armed with baskets of rice cakes called tipat bantal, later flinging their ammo at each other in a very rare and unique spectacle. The event signifies blessings and prosperity for the whole agrarian village. After the battles, the remainders are spread over rice fields.

The myth behind the curative and purifying spring tells of a Balinese ruler, known by the title Mayadenawa, who is depicted to have defied the influence of Hinduism and denied his subjects religious prayers and practices. The legend goes that this eventually angered the gods, and in a campaign, god Indra sought Mayadenawa’s subdual.

Marcel’s Favorite Recipe

Älplermagrone • 6 cups milk

Emmenthaler, Gruyere, or

• 1 tablespoon salt

Appenzeller, shredded

• 1 pound macaroni (long straight ones are most authentic) • 1 1/4 cups mountain cheese (Bergkaese), Sbrinz,

• 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper • 8 tablespoons butter • 2 onions, sliced • 3 cloves garlic, chopped

Bring the milk and one tablespoon of salt to a boil. Add the noodles, reduce the heat, and cook over a low heat until done, stirring occasionally. The noodles should absorb enough milk so that the dish is still moist (if necessary, add more milk). Empty the noodles into a pre-heated bowl: mix in cheese and pepper. Top with onions which have been sautéed in butter, and garlic cloves. The Aelplermagrone can be served at this point: often a green salad is served alongside. But if you prefer, you can also turn the mixture into a casserole and bake it in the oven long enough to brown the top nicely -- usually about twenty minutes at 400° F / 200° C. A variant on the theme: in the Swiss canton of Nidwalden, Aelplermagrone is prepared with equal amounts of macaroni and potatoes (peeled and diced) plus diced ham and bacon. Dried apple slices are traditionally served as a side dish. Makes four servings.
