L

ocated in Bali’s lush district of Payangan, Samsara Ubud is the creme de la creme of laid-back

luxury and chic. The strategic location of the resort offers an exceptional sense of calm, yet is only a 20-minute drive to the town of Ubud and an hour and a half drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport. 12

S

eventeen villas -- 8 one-bedroom pool villa, 6 one-bedroom pool villa, 2 two-bedroom pool villa and 1 three-bedroom pool villa -- make

up this resort. Designed by internationally acclaimed Bali architect, Popo Danes, all villas are equally sumptuous and lavishly decorated. Samsara Ubud has been designed to be in complete harmony with nature by taking the natural land contour into account. The integration of sustainable design strategies can also be seen from how the original contour of the land is maintained. The architecture is a tribute to Bali’s centuries-old rice terraces, providing all villas with views of the tropical jungle. Each villa, starting from 122 square metres, comes with a private heated infinity pool and a spacious outdoor area. Bathrooms feature Makassar marble, double vanities, deep bathtub and separate indoor & outdoor showers. A mix of Balinese decor, teak furnishings and fabrics create the villas’ interior.

Samsara Ubud’s dining venue, The Kelusa, presents a great dining experience. Chef Iwan Sutrisno and his team offer dishes which celebrate the rich and diverse culinary history of Balinese and Indonesian food. A plethora of activities is available to enjoy the lush tropical forests of Payangan and nearby attractions, such as exploring nearby Kelusa village or experiencing a Balinese water purification ritual at Tirta Empul water temple. For this reason, many ordinary Balinese are accomplished dancers, musicians, and artists. World’s Best Hotel,Nihi Sumba Island

N

Sumba

Island

(formerly

Nihiwatu) resort in West Sumba

The luxury property has won the award for two consecutive years

regency, East Nusa Tenggara,

was named the 2017 World’s Best Hotel by Travel+Leisure magazine readers. In the annual reader survey, properties around the world were rated on their facilities,

location,

service,

food

and

overall value. The resort scored rave reviews across the board for its remote location (it’s an hour by plane from Bali) and one of the review commented, “this is paradise”. Owner Chris Burch, who bought the property

in

2012

and

expanded

its

footprint by adding a spa, nine villas, and 13 rooms, has managed to preserve the edge-of-civilization vibe and strong sense

16

of community.

During a press conference, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said that Nihi Sumba Island won the award likely because of its overall value as the property helped to develop the local community and environment through its eco-friendly concept.

“Nihi Sumba Island could be considered [an

example

of]

sustainable

tourism

development,” Arief said. West Sumba Development Planning Board (Bappeda) head Aloysius Seran expressed appreciation for the award, saying it helped to introduce travelers to West Sumba regency. He said that, previously, the island was frequently mistaken for Sumbawa. However, Aloysius also addressed that the area needed to be developed, particularly in infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, clean water and electricity. “[State-owned electricity firm] PLN only supplied electricity to Nihi Sumba Island at certain hours,” he said, noting that the luxury property relied on an electric generator. Meanwhile, Nihi Sumba Island managing partner James McBride said he wanted to see more direct flights to Sumba Island. “Currently, other than [travelers] coming from Singapore, travelers need to spend the night in Bali [before heading to Sumba Island],” he said.

TRIBAL PEOPLE OF INDONESIA

The

Nage

People

The Nage are an indigenous tribe living on the eastern Indonesian island of Flores and Timor. They descended from the indigenous population of Flores. They speak Nage language, one of the major languages in the Austronesian language group. The Nage people mainly engage in manual slash-and-burn farming (tubers, rice, corn), hunting and gathering. Until the middle of the 20th century, communal land ownership with large families were still preserved. They live in cumulus-type settlements, located on the slopes of mountains and surrounded by stone walls. Houses are piled up in rectangular position and connected by an open gallery into a single complex, which is intended for joint residence of several large families.

26

The clothes of the Naga people are loincloth and skirt or kain. Women fasten it over the breast, and men around the waist. The diet is dominated by plant based foods (cooked groats and tubers with spicy seasoning), while meat is eaten only on holidays. Agrarian cults have survived and are still being practiced. Before the sowing, rites of cleansing the field and the grains of rice will be performed on the first new moon, before the start of cultivating the fields.

LAKE TOBA New airport set to welcome travelers to Lake Toba in September

Indonesia has confirmed that construction of Silangit Airport in North Sumatra comprising a runway extension and new terminal will be completed by September 15 this year. After the enhancement, the runway – previously 2,200 metres and 30 metres in width – will be 2,60 metres and 45 metres in width, allowing larger planes such as Boeing 737-800 and Airbus 320 to land, said state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II’s president director Muhammad Awaluddin. Currently, the airport serves two airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Sriwijaya, and soon, Lion Air. After the expansion, Silangit Airport’s passenger capacity is expected to reach 500,000 people a year by 2019, Awaluddin said. In the first semester of 2017, passenger arrivals reached 124,000, a 400 per cent growth in comparison to the same period last year that had 31,000. This number is predicted to rise to 250,000-300,000 by end of year, he said, as the airport aims to attract visitors mainly from Singapore Changi Airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport. According to Indonesia’s Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, the ministry has also shelved out 20 trillion rupiahs (US$2.25 billion) to develop Lake Toba as a tourist destination with 10 trillion budgeted for infrastructure such as toll road and road access to Silangit Airport. 32

Tumpek Landep 2017

2 September 2017

Balinese Ceremony

44

N

owadays Tumpek Landep is a ceremonial day at which offerings are made for objects

that are made of metal. The ceremonies start in the morning hours at the village temple when people gather for special prayers

and

blessings.

Afterwards,

at the home compounds, additional ceremonies and blessings follow at which offerings are made for the holy family keris that most families own, but also for cars and motorbikes. In these modern times, also other objects that contain metal, such as computers, may be subject to these ceremonies. Most Balinese people truly believe that these ceremonies and blessings will bring them luck and keep them safe in traffic. Tragically, at the day of Tumpek Landep the hospitals in Bali show a peak in the treatments of especially motorbike accidents.

This area is considered the birthplace of the Batak people - the original ethnic group of North Sumatra. 46

L

ake Toba is one of the most interesting natural

wonders

of

the

world.

Covering over 1,145 square kilometers

with a depth of 450 meters, Lake Toba is recognized as the largest lake in Southeast Asia and one of the world’s deepest lakes. Scientists have concluded that Lake Toba which is a crater lake, actually formed through a mega explosion on earth in ancient times. Many scientists believe that the super volcanic event is making the planet fall in the volcanic winter for 6 to 10 years. Currently, tourists can reach Lake Toba from Silangit airport, cutting the travel time to just 1.5 hours compared to the overland journey for 5 hours from Medan, the capital of North Sumatra. Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air and Sriwijaya Air have regular flights to Silangit from Jakarta as well as daily flights from Kuala Namu airport Medan. There are many hotels around the Lake and on the island of Samosir. Be sure to choose Lake Toba as your next destination!
