Welcome to your May/June magazine! Dear Friends, Spring is well and truly here as I write this letter, and I’m delighted to present a crop of exciting and inspiring new titles. There is great new fiction (pages 22 to 23), church resources on pages 24 to 26 for all those who plan ahead (diaries, lectionaries, etc for 2018) a host of new titles and re-issues from Joyce Meyer (page 15 and the back cover), some great CDs (pages 28 to 29), and at two key new books, by Tom Wright and Alister McGrath: Spiritual and Religious by Tom Wright (opposite) is one of many new titles looking at the relevance of God and faith in the 21st century, particularly for the increasing number who claim to be spiritually aware – but not religious. How do we as Christians connect with our friends and neighbours who increasingly take this line? The Great Mystery by Alister McGrath and Andreas Idreos (on p11) looks at the human quest for meaning at the intersection between faith and science. The authors open up some of the deepest and most important questions about who we are and why we matter and provide lucid, faith-affirming answers. And as usual, this magazine presents you with just the ‘tip of the iceberg’. Visit www.aslanchristianbooks.com to discover thousands of other wide-ranging books, Bibles, CDs & DVDs.

The Insanity of God Would you follow Jesus, even when it doesn't make sense? That's the question that is asked of Nik and Ruth Ripken as, out of the pain of losing their son, they choose to follow Christ into the darkest, most dangerous places and to the heart of the persecuted Church. How can faith survive in such circumstances? But, through their story, the lives of believers from across the globe prove them wrong. They discover a God that will never make sense, that defies odds, and that grows in the places where they thought were barren. DVD | Running Time: 90mins | AUTHENTIC

Top Picks Spiritual and Religious

The Gospel in an Age of Paganism Tom Wright

NEW

Publishes 18th May

'I'm spiritual, not religious.' It's a phrase often used to explain why, although they don't go to church, people believe in some kind of purpose. But what does this 'spirituality' consist of? Often people are simply reverting to forms of paganism that are similar to those that confronted the early Christians. Wright traces the parallels between the worldviews of the 1st and 21st centuries, showing how understanding the New Testament in its original pagan context can help you live and communicate the Gospel more effectively amidst the plethora of spiritual pathways seen today. Theology & Faith The Divine Imprint

Russell Stannard What if our culture's search for evidence of God from a scientific examination of the physical world is the wrong approach? Rob Bell To discover how the Bible is more revelatory, revolutionary, and relevant than we think, we need to see the humanity behind the Scriptures. What’s the story that’s unfolding? What moved people to record these words? In asking questions, we go beyond the onedimensional ‘is it true?’ to reveal the Bible’s authentic transformative power. Rob addresses the concerns of the Bible's ethical dilemmas, errors, and inconsistencies, and recaptures Scripture's importance in shaping and inspiring our lives. Hb | 336 pgs | WILLIAM COLLINS

No More Faking Fine

Esther Fleece If you've ever been given cliches during challenges, or advised to "give it to God and move on", you'll know the pain of being misunderstood by well-meaning people. We go through life trying to shut down painful emotions, robbing ourselves of the opportunity to be healed. Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. This is your invitation to get honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. Lament, a practice woven throughout Scripture, is a prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. Pb | 192 pgs | ZONDERVAN

Jumble Sales of the Apocalypse

Simon Jenkins We often focus on the big issues of Christianity but there's value found in the small things that have come out of the faith. WWJD boxer shorts, custom coffins, bumper stickers. Consider the deeper meaning of these things, and ponder questions like what you'd do if the Second Coming was scheduled for Wednesday: Get to church? Plan your outfit? Confess sins? Text goodbyes to unbelieving friends? Take paracetamol in case it hurts? This quirky book highlights hidden value in Christianity by exploring the comedy of its wilder excesses. It looks at faith gone wrong, gone right, or simply gone AWOL. Above all, it helps you own up to being a fallible human and therefore, by Grace, a little Simon Jenkins is a witty, more tolerant of those who do things differently. honest and thoughtPb | 144 pgs | SPCK provoking writer... Christian Life Black Sheep and Prodigals

Dave Tomlinson Do you feel more at home on the edges of church? Would you call yourself a black sheep? Too often Christianity is associated with conformity, but it doesn't have to be. Instead, our churches can be 'laboratories of the Spirit' where we can explore faith with openness, imagination and creativity. This is a book for those who reject, question, or have little interest in traditional Christianity. It's a contemporary and more humane approach, drawing on doubt, common sense and spiritual experience. Q & A with Mike Hollow Mike Hollow is the author of bestselling crime fiction series, The Blitz Detective. The series follows Detective Inspector Jago as he solves cases in and around London and while nagivating the struggles of British life in wartime. What inspired you to put pen to paper and bring the story of your hometown and family’s histories to life through DI Jago’s cases? Going to the 2012 Olympics in Stratford, east London, coming out of the 21st-century stadium and seeing the Victorian town hall still there – a stark reminder of how things have changed. Then remembering that in the Blitz in 1940 my dad spent his nights on that town hall’s roof as a 16yr old volunteer fire watcher, his duty to stop incendiary bombs burning it down. I realized what astonishing scenes these streets had witnessed, what unimaginable stresses the people had endured, and what a gripping context it would make for stories.

If you watch some soaps on the TV today you’d get the impression people spend all their time screaming in each other’s faces, and that their predominant emotion is uncontrollable rage. That’s one idea of effective drama, but if you lay it on too thick it becomes unbelievable. With fiction that’s set in the past, I find that back-projecting contemporary attitudes onto a historical context often makes awkward reading. I want my characters and the way they think and speak to ring true for 1940, and the way they handle their emotions to be appropriate for that period. That means they are more reserved – but it doesn’t mean their feelings don’t run deep!

Although novels offer a great platform for social commentary, the fractured and immediate nature of wartime gives unique access into people's motives and vulnerabilities. What was the greatest lesson you learned from journeying with these characters - with their varying morals, backstories, and circumstances - through that kind of setting? We might think of those wartime days as a time when things were simpler: the war was morally justified, we all pulled together, and we won. But as I’ve delved into the reality I’ve realized it wasn’t that simple. Life was just as complex as now, and the issues were the same. People had to grapple with the fundamental question of what is truth – a very live issue today. Who and what do you believe? And is violence the only way to respond to evil? People in 1940 faced death every day, so how did that affect the way they lived? The greatest lesson, perhaps, is that the fundamental issues of life remain the same. The intense pressures of life in the Blitz just brought everything into sharper relief.

What books most inspired you, both personally and as a writer? Jane Austen’s novels, for their exquisite style and subtlety, and among living writers those of Annie Proulx for their beautiful use of language. Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s for their powerful explorations of human nature, good and evil. C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books, for their irresistible charm and allegorical depth. Dorothy L. Sayers’ joyously entertaining Lord Peter Wimsey detective stories.

Today’s culture is full of discussion supporting people, men in particular, getting in touch with their emotions. How much of a challenge did it pose structuring a series around characters in a more reserved era, and in occupations that are stereotypically ‘British’ and restricted?

What do you hope your readers take away from the chronicles of DI Jago? I hope they feel they’ve had an entertaining read and they’ve learnt something they didn’t know about the world as it was in 1940. That they’ve had an insight into one or two of the big moral questions that people were tussling with in those days, and that they’ve thought a little about how they would have reacted if they’d been there themselves. And lastly, that they come away wanting to read the next one!

From Tennessee, through the Carolina mountains, the name of a small town beckons: Fairhope. That's where he believes he'll find his answers. But will they bring him healing? And is it the 'magic' that will one day lead him home? Pb | 416 pgs | THOMAS NELSON
