Christopher Landau was appointed Director of ReSource in 2021, having previously led the ‘ReSource Future’ process in 2017-18. He is married to Carolyn and they have three children. The family have moved to Telford from Oxford, where Christopher was previously an associate minister at St Aldates Church, a chaplain with the Oxford Pastorate, and an honorary cathedral chaplain at Christ Church.

Loving Disagreement: The Problem is the Solution

Every church has its disagreements. But why do they so easily turn toxic? Loving disagreement is the problem – Christians have become too relaxed about the way disagreements destroy unity and undermine mission. Loving disagreement is also the solution – because if Christians can learn to love even their neighbour in Christ with whom they disagree, situations of conflict are transformed.

Reflecting on his experiences first as a BBC religion correspondent and then as an ordained Anglican, Christopher Landau offers practical solutions to the facing of inevitable disagreements among Christians, rooted in a dual call to love our neighbour and seek the fruit of the Spirit.

“Christopher Landau, more than anyone else, has taught me the need to listen, to learn from and to love those with whom I may profoundly disagree.” Simon Ponsonby

“This book is uncomfortable to read because it calls us to do what is both unnatural and counter-cultural: to love and disagree well. In a calm and measured way, it appeals to Christians to love radically, taking examples from the Bible and presenting us with practical ways to do this well. A challenge to us all.”

Chine McDonald, author, broadcaster and director of Theos think tank

“The Christian message is that Truth is found in a Person, Jesus Christ, which should alert us to the fact that truth can never be reduced to mere content, but includes tone and character. Sadly, the Church often apes the ways of the fractious, divided and contentious world in which we live. Christopher’s book is a powerful and timely call to return to Christlike love in the way that we handle differences, both within the Church and as we engage with wider society” Paul Harcourt, National Leader, New Wine England

Philippa Hanna

Known is an interactive and creative journal-style resource designed to help young women explore the subject of their identity. The book will lead the reader on a journey, through the key elements of who they are, by focusing on scriptural truth, prayer and creative exercises. With a focus on ‘wellness’, Known will equip young women to navigate the unique pressures of life in the 2020s. They are facing increased pressure at school, disruption due to recent events and the toll that places on them, the increasing pressures of social media – especially in platforms such as TikTok, family pressures - both those struggling with separation and those trapped in difficult situation, the impact on hobbies, pastimes, and future hopes due to social and economic pressures.

Companions on the Bethlehem Road

Rachel Boulding

This book of daily Bible readings and reflections for Advent and Christmas is based around spiritual insights gleaned from some of the best-loved poets of the past - TS Eliot, George Herbert, Tennyson and Auden, among others. While they come from different ages and backgrounds, they wrestled with the same questions that we do, about God, love, hope, and suffering. This book is not a literary study of their work, but a quest to see what they can tell us about life and faith today. Their poems are quoted in short sections, with suggestions about what they might mean for us now. As we travel the road to Christmas in the company of these great poets, we will find our minds enlarged and our hearts touched with something of the wonder and joy of this special season.

Sharing the Christmas Story: From Reading to Living the Gospel

Sally Welch

In this year's BRF Advent book Sally Welch explores two questions: What is the Christmas story really about, and how do we share it? Through each week of Advent, a different aspect of the Christmas story is examined: light, promise, mystery, love, peace and hope. Within each week, the days are focused on the ways in which the Christmas story is shared: prophecies, journeys, new life, signs, poems, stories and conversations. Each day offers a Bible passage, followed by a reflection and prayer activity. Suggestions for group study and group study questions are also included.

The Coming of the King: 25 Readings for Advent

For most of us, Advent is synonymous with Christmas. After all, don't our Advent calendars count down to December 25th? Isn't Advent a time to think about the birth of the baby in the manger, the angels and the shepherd? It certainly is. Advent means the coming of the special baby who was laid in a manger in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. But J.C. Ryle would also remind people of the 'Second Advent' when Jesus will come again. On that day, Jesus will return to our world, not as a baby but as the unmistakable King of kings and Lord of lords.

Bethlehem Bound: Journeying with the Characters of Christmas

Andrew Nunn

It was not only Mary and Joseph who journeyed to Bethlehem – all the characters and creatures we meet in the nativity stories found their way to the manger, summoned by stars, angels or political circumstance. Each time we celebrate Christmas, we travel there too and open ourselves to transformation. Bethlehem Bound is a daily spiritual travel companion for the season, beginning with the great Advent antiphons that herald the feast, and ending with the Presentation in the Temple. Each day it travels with a different character from scripture and the Christian tradition – Jesse, Anna, Gabriel, the donkey, the innkeeper and his wife, the shepherds, the martyrs we commemorate at Christmas and many more. The journey had its challenges for the original characters and it will for us, but at its end is a wondrous gift from God - God’s own self in a baby laid in a manger.

Brightest and Best: 31 Advent Devotions on Jesus

Philippa Ruth Wilson

In a world of poverty, prejudice, and sickness it can be hard to sing tis the season to be jolly and mean it. We are in a world laden with darkness and grief, and yet by the end of November, so much around us seems to be yelling: HAVE A HAPPY CHRISTMAS. Is this what advent is then? A building pressure to put reality on hold for a while, and to just Have a Good Time? Brightest and Best is a collection of advent devotions that point to the comfort that God has promised: the coming of Jesus. Philippa Wilson communicates joyful, uplifting, and glorious Christmas truths in fresh ways. The purpose of each devotion is to stir up hope and faith, and praise for Jesus, as well as to encourage readers to think biblically and deeply about the carols we sing each year.

Sleepers Wake: Getting Serious About Climate Change

Nicholas Holtam

The problem of climate change is greater and more urgent than many of us realise. For while we may appreciate the challenges posed by technical and political issues, the fundamental problem, as Nicholas Holtam argues, is spiritual. The words of scientist Gus Speth, former Director of the National Research Defence Council in the US, are highly pertinent: ‘I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, eco system collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy – and to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation – and we scientists don’t know how to do that.’ Offering a meditation about climate change and the environment that is brilliantly relevant to the season, this book focuses over 4 weeks on the topics of Now, Spirituality, Creation and Hope.

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus: Experiencing the Peace and Promise of Christmas

Between purchasing presents and planning travel, enjoying holiday pageants and attending parties, it is all too easy for the busyness of Christmas to crowd out a quiet anticipation of this sacred season. Joy to the World: 25 Christmas Carol Meditations

J. John

Advent looks forward to the world being utterly changed in every way by the coming of Christ. This season let's explore Christmas by focusing on carols and what they say. Whether old or new, they point to the truth of Christmas. We are reminded that Christmas is about Christ. This may seem obvious, but increasingly the focus has become Christmas itself. The second reminder is that Christmas should generate joy. When the bible talks about Christ's coming into the world it sounds a note of joy. To understand Christmas is to experience joy.

Beloved spiritual writer Evelyn Underhill believed that God does not just come to us at special times, but is always coming to us. But how do we recognise His coming and make ourselves open to it? Skilfully weaving together Underhill’s writings with the psalms and short prayers, she shows how, as Christians, we can embrace God’s comings and be transformed by them in order to better love others. These Christian meditations will help you make the most of the Advent season and be more able to connect with God at all times.

Unexpected Jesus: Cover to Cover Advent Study Guide

During Advent season, we often sing, 'Come thou long-expected Jesus...'. We put up the same decorations, sing the same carols, lay out the same creche; we imagine what it was like to welcome Jesus into the world on that silent night. So peaceful. So lovely. But what if everything was not as it seems? What if Jesus actually challenged everyone's expectations of what a Messiah would be like, how he should arrive, what he would do? What if he was born in a house with a family, in a noisy bustling town and not a quiet stable? What if he was more interested in those who were outside the religious and social establishment than those who were in it? What if looking closely at the scriptures overturns our expectations of Advent and Christmas in a way that changes us forever?

Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools: An Invitation to the Wonder and Mystery of Prayer

Prayer is the source of Jesus' most astonishing miracles and the subject of Jesus' most audacious promises, and yet, most people - even most Bible-believing Christians - find prayer to be boring, obligatory, disappointing, confusing, or, most often, all of the above. If you've ever felt this way, Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools is your invitation to trade your conceptions and misconceptions about prayer for prayer in its purest form: a vital, sustaining, powerful connection with God that is more real and alive than you could have ever imagined.

Searching for Enough: The High-Wire Walk Between Doubt and Faith

Do you ever find yourself thinking, 'I'm not enough, and I'm never going to be. And I know I'm not supposed to say this, but God's not enough for me either.'? In Searching for Enough, Pastor Tyler Staton draws on ancient and modern insights to introduce us to Jesus' disciple Thomas: history's most notorious sceptic. Like Thomas, we are caught between two unsatisfying stories: we want to believe in God but can't reconcile his presence with our circumstances and internal struggles. But what if there's a God who can heal your resentments, fears, and loneliness in such a profound way that you feel whole? From a place of spiritual companionship and deep authenticity, Tyler shows us that it is not an empty tomb that will change our lives, but the presence of the living God.

Pete Greig

Having addressed God's silence in God on Mute, and then How to Pray in his previous bestseller, Pete Greig is back to bring wisdom and guidance to one of the most pressing and perplexing aspects of universal Christian experience - How to Hear God. Exploring the story of Christ's playful, poignant conversation on the road to Emmaus, Pete draws deeply from the insights of a wide range of Christian traditions. He weaves together the evangelical emphasis upon hearing God in the Bible, and the charismatic commitment to hearing God in the prophetic, with the contemplative understanding of God's 'still, small voice' within.

Going Higher with God in Prayer: Cultivating a Lifelong Dialogue

Learning how to pray is one of the greatest challenges in a Christian's life. A.W. Tozer pointed out that the church's greatest curse is unanswered prayer, and that many people do not seem bothered by that. Maybe they don't understand what answered prayer is all about. Tozer outlines this as only he can, describing the kind of prayer God answers and the kind of prayer that leaves Him silent. Ultimately, you have to ask yourself: are my prayers today more powerful and effective than they were a year ago? Our good Father wants them to be! The book opens with Jacob's Ladder and its theme of ascending into God's very presence. What better place to begin dialoging with God? Only He can teach us what is on His heart, what His Will is, and what our part in it could be.

Praying the Bible with Luther: A Simple Approach to Everyday Prayer

Michael Parsons

Praying biblically and with intent. There is a need in today's church to relate scripture and prayer in such a way as to enable us to speak God's words after him. This book takes a simple lectio divina approach developed in the sixteenth century by Martin Luther and offers practical guidance to pray in this way. Beginning each time of prayer with a Bible passage, Luther would meditate on it with four 'strands' in mind: teaching, thanksgiving, repentance and supplication. Then he would pray, having his thoughts shaped by his reading, praying God's words after him, confident of God's grace. Praying the Bible with Luther explains this method, demonstrates it and encourages readers to follow his example, helping us to turn scripture into prayer and to pray it into our own lives today.

Forgive: Why Should I and How Can I?

Timothy Keller

We all want to be ethical, but even more we want to be wise - to know what is the right thing to do when there are several options, all of which are good. This is the heart of wisdom: the ability to know how to respond in difficult situations; to know when to speak and when to be silent; when to think short-term and when to think long-term; who to marry and befriend and invest with. And wisdom comes, Keller argues, from knowing oneself, knowing the times and seasons, and knowing God and his ways. In this profound yet practical book, New York pastor Tim Keller mines the Bible for its wisdom, and shows us how to apply it to our everyday lives.

Parenting teens has its challenges. The once-small children we had are pulling away from us, growing in independence and making decisions with bigger consequences. Parents remain the significant spiritual influencer in a teen’s life, and they need us to help them navigate the world and faith together. This book will help all parents, carers, grandparents and others involved in teens’ everyday lives to understand the teenage faith journey more and find their place within it.

The Hardest Problem: God, Evil and Suffering

Rupert Shortt

To many, the problem of evil and suffering constitutes by far the most serious objection to mainstream religious belief. For all its starkness and salience, though, the dilemma is also widely misinterpreted. That visceral feelings often dominate discussion is understandable on one level. But this can displace the clearer-headed thinking needed to shed greater light on the subject. Rupert Shortt shows that belief in a divine Creator is much more coherent intellectually than many sceptics suppose. He goes on to discuss the nature of evil from a classical Abrahamic standpoint and how Christian resources in particular offer guidance in an area where raw emotion, conceptual thought and the deepest trials of the spirit overlap.

A Place at the Table: Faith, Hope and Hospitality

Miranda Harris & Jo Swinney

At a time when loneliness and isolation have reached unprecedented levels, it has never been more important for Christians to embrace the practice of hospitality. For many, it is a lost art - a practice we have forgotten, neglected or distorted beyond all recognition. From the simple act of preparing vegetables to the warm welcome of a stranger, co-authors Miranda Harris and her daughter Jo Swinney re-define hospitality for the modern age. Drawing on biblical insights and a deep well of experience, this is a warm invitation to embrace the loving kindness of others. To be hospitable doesn't require culinary excellence or matching cutlery - it doesn't even require a home of one's own; true hospitality offers a welcome into imperfection and messiness, a place to belong and be embraced.

Followers of the Way: Ancient Discipleship for Modern Christians

Simon Reed

What discipleship means and how we help people to become true disciples is one of the most pressing issues in today's church. In simple terms discipleship is about connecting more deeply with God and connecting God with the whole of life, a life-long process for which we require long-term skills rather than just short-term courses. The Celtic and Desert Christians, drawing on Old and New Testament practices, taught and modelled how to do this through the practice of living by a Way of Life.

Living with Cancer, Walking with God

Isabel Vellacott and Oliver Vellacott

Isabel was diagnosed with cancer just four months into her marriage to Oliver. They walked the rigours of cancer together. But they weren’t in it alone. Through it all, they knew the heart of the Father and kept their eyes fixed on Jesus. Before she died, Isabel penned her journey through shock, anger, guilt, pain and the ways in which she and Oliver processed her diagnosis. From their experiences, you’ll find lessons for the journey drawn from accounts of the coming of Jesus Christ into this world. So, to know true hope in the midst of grief and pain, start at the cross. Hide your life in Christ and His love, then let your journey, whatever that may entail of joy or sadness, culminate in Resurrection at the last day. Living with cancer isn’t easy. But walking with God can frame your story.

No Reason to Hide: Standing for Christ in a Collapsing Culture

Erwin W. Lutzer

In a culture with an ever-narrowing understanding of tolerance, Christians can no longer remain silent about the line between the Bible's truth and the world's lies. No Reason to Hide examines the toxic roots behind the alarming symptoms of a culture in spiritual freefall. As you read, you'll be equipped to advocate for your biblical beliefs by defending them with love and grace. Identify how you can respond to the battleground issues of today, including identity-driven social justice ideologies that seek to divide rather than unite cultural attacks on the definitions of sex and gender that turn language into a war progressive pushes within the church that ultimately obscure and desecrate the Bible's teachings.

The Deeper Life: Go Beyond Knowledge to Experience Spirit-Filled Living

A. W. Tozer

Christians often know the theory of the Spirit-filled life but not the joy-filled experience. Pastor and theologian A. W. Tozer said that Christians often know nothing personally about the inner fire of a Spirit-filled life. This timely voice provides a timeless glimpse into spiritual maturity and growth. The 'deeper life' is deeper only because the average Christian life is tragically and unnecessarily shallow. Tozer examines our lack of personal zeal and its causes. Why do we settle for peace of mind and material prosperity? What can we do with our fears, disappointments, and disillusionment? In The Deeper Life, Tozer demonstrates how the ancient heart-thirst felt by all of us can only be quenched by the personal presence of God Himself.

Finding Your Best Identity: A Short Christian Introduction to Identity, Sexuality and Gender

Andrew Bunt

Who are you? And how can you find who you are? Andrew Bunt has wrestled with these questions. At one point in his childhood, he thought he might be a girl in a boy's body. As he grew up and discovered he's same-sex attracted, the world started to tell him that his sexuality is his identity. And for many years, he believed the lie that he was a freak and a weirdo, assuming that's what everyone thought of him. In this short Christian introduction to identity, Andrew explores and examines different ways we can discover who we are. Blending his personal story with careful Bible teaching and genuine cultural awareness, this is a book to get conversations going and help us all understand our best identity.

Clinging to Hope: What Scripture Says About Weathering Times of Trouble, Chaos, and Calamity

Charles R. Swindoll

Life is difficult and demanding. It’s often filled with pain, heartaches, setbacks, and detours. Disappointments in others sadden us, scandals among those we respect shock us, and disputes in our families, churches, or workplaces demoralise us. When such troubles strike, they can be downright devastating. But they don’t have to be! In Clinging to Hope, Chuck Swindoll reassures us that we can endure unexpected calamities. How? By taking our stand on the strong foundation of God’s Word. When trials and tribulations rumble in like a fleet of bulldozers to demolish our lives, we can emerge from the rubble with a strong resolve to recover and rebuild. Not just to survive, but to thrive.

Fresh From the Word 2023: Daily Bible Studies From Around the World: Read, Reflect, Grow David Painting

Fresh from the Word 2023 aims to help us build the discipline of Bible reading into our lives so we are grounded in God's word and our faith may deepen and develop. By offering accessible and engaging material, it aids our understanding of the Bible and helps us understand it from different Christian perspectives. One of the key themes in this year's edition is 'Hidden Heroes & Heroines', characters in the Bible who are overlooked but play a pivotal role in the unfolding of the Kingdom. As we read their stories, we may be encouraged that our lives, though they sometimes feel insignificant, are indeed being used by God in ways possibly beyond our imagining!

Deeper Still: Finding Clear Minds and Full Hearts Through Biblical Meditation

We live in a fast-paced world, and our minds are working in overdrive. Mindfulness promises a method of tuning out the voices for a few minutes to live in the moment. Biblical meditation offers something better: an opportunity to be transformed by God’s voice of truth. Psalm 1 says that the person who delights in God’s Word and meditates on it day and night is like a 'tree planted by streams of water'. Linda Allcock gives us a framework to help us slow down and dwell deeply on God’s Word so that it clears our minds and fills our hearts, making a real difference to the way we live.

Lifelines: Sound Advice From The Heroes Of The Faith

Andy Croft and Mike Pilavachi

Walk with the biblical heroes of the faith and learn from their successes, struggles, and failures. What if, during a battle with fear, we could take some tips from David? Or in wrestling with a relationship, we could learn from Ruth? Or when we’ve got questions about the future, we could sit down with Joseph? Through their successes, struggles, and failures, these men and women of faith have blazed a trail for us to follow. We can walk beside them and discover God with them. Their stories took place thousands of years ago, but what their lives teach us has never mattered more. Much of what we learn comes from the people we live with. We see and share their worlds and, without realizing it, are shaped by them. What would it be like if we could share in the lives of the great heroes of the faith? In Lifelines, Mike Pilavachi and Andy Croft help us understand what the stories of these biblical characters have to teach us about how to live lives full of faith and integrity today.

Seasons of Sorrow: The Pain of Loss and the Comfort of God

Neither students nor a passing doctor nor paramedics were able to revive him. His parents received the news at their home in Toronto and immediately departed for Louisville to be together as a family. While on the plane, Tim, an author and blogger, began to process his loss through writing. In Seasons of Sorrow, he shares real-time reflections from the first year of grief, introducing readers to what he describes as the 'ministry of sorrow.'

He gave us masterpieces like The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity and still more. In this fascinating biographical study Not a Tame Lion, author Terry Glaspey points out that Lewis' life was as compelling as his work. Glaspey gives readers a glimpse of the character of this extraordinarily gifted man - who believed that his sharp mind and rich imagination were to be accompanied by a sense of responsibility to the wider world. If Lewis were alive today, he would see the fruition of trends he warned against many years ago.

Confronting Jesus: 9 Encounters with the Hero of the Gospels

Rebecca McLaughlin

Jesus is the most famous human being in all of history. But while many people have a basic sketch of Jesus in their minds, comparatively few have taken time to read the four biographies of his life in the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. In Confronting Jesus, Rebecca McLaughlin shares important biblical context to help all readers see why the Gospels should be taken seriously as historical documents. Exploring eyewitness testimony about Jesus, McLaughlin points to him as a first-century Jewish man who is the Son of God, King of the Jews, mighty healer, greatest teacher, lover of sinners, suffering servant, perfect sacrifice, and universal Lord.

BIBLICAL Lydia

Paula Gooder

The New Testament tells us very little about Lydia, a seller of purple cloth who was living in Philippi when she met the apostle Paul. And yet she is considered the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe. In her second work of fiction, Paula Gooder tells Lydia’s story –who she was, the life she lived and her first-century faith – and in doing so opens up Paul’s letter to the Philippians, giving a sense of the cultural and historical pressures that shaped Paul’s thinking, and the faith of the early church. This is a book for everyone and anyone who wants to engage more deeply and imaginatively with Paul’s theology.

Suppression & Suspicion: (The Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon)

Mel Starr

Edmund Harkins has gone missing. Few in Bampton liked him, knowing him to be a wife-beater and distinctly unsavoury character, so when some hungry pigs unearth his corpse from a shallow grave, there is hardly an outpouring of grief. As bailiff, it is Hugh de Singleton’s duty to bring Edmund’s killer to justice. But where is he to start investigating when almost everyone in the village has a motive? And when everyone is pleased to see the scoundrel dead, who knows how far they might go to help someone get away with murder?

Psalms for the City: Original Poetry Inspired by the Places We Call Home

John-Paul Flintoff

Psalms for the City is a beautifully illustrated book of poetry that offers comfort, inspiration and encouragement for the heart and soul, as John-Paul Flintoff puts into vibrant, captivating and sometimes heart-wrenching words the pockets of peace he has found in the midst of the non-stop noise and colourful chaos of the city. Inspired by the psalms - some of the oldest and most soul-stirring poetry in the world - Flintoff's fluid style and technical skills take us on a private tour of our most-loved urban landscapes and reveal the spiritual nourishment in some of its most famous sights. In countless churches and sacred spaces, he shows us locations to lament; he teaches us to discover joy in crowded marketplaces; and shares how he found hope searching the horizon atop Hampstead Heath.

A Mucky Business: Why Christians Should Get Involved In Politics

Tim Farron

Many Christians are nervous about politics - isn't the political world murky and sleazy, a den of deceit and backstairs deals? At the same time, the image of Christians in politics isn't great either - often seen as judgemental hypocrites, intolerant and hateful control freaks... shouldn't this mean that faith and politics should be kept firmly apart? In A Mucky Business, Tim Farron, former Leader of the Liberal Democrats Party and friends, explore and defend why Christianity and politics should and must work together. If Christians are to love their neighbours, they need to engage with the issues that affect everyone. Why should Christians leave their beliefs at the door when they enter public life? No one else does!

Act Justly: Practices to Reshape the World

Samuel Wells

Taking their inspiration from a question posed in the Old Testament, ‘What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God’, each book in the series offers a practical ethic for living that is rooted in timeless wisdom. Focusing on two of the most outstanding justice issues of our day – racial and climate injustice – as well as individual stories of injustice, Act Justly offers practical ways of thinking about justice and cultivating habits of justice to foster the life of God, so that injustice can be challenged and the world can be changed.
