Going to Church in Medieval England
Nicholas Orme
An engaging, richly illustrated account of parish churches and churchgoers in England, from the Anglo-Saxons to the mid-sixteenth century. In this comprehensive study, Nicholas Orme shows how they came into existence, who staffed them and how their buildings were used. He explains who went to church, who did not attend, how people behaved there and how they - not merely the clergy - affected how worship was staged. The book provides an accessible account of what happened in the daily and weekly services, and how churches marked the seasons of Christmas, Lent, Easter and summer.

Previously he was Dean of Chapel and Research Professor of Christian Ethics at Duke University.
Humbler Faith, Bigger God: Finding a Story to Live By
Samuel Wells
Samuel Wells explores the key tenets of Christian belief by engaging with the most widely used arguments against religious faith – that it’s a crutch for the deluded, a fairy tale for the simple minded, the cause of so many wars, a drug for the poor, powerless against suffering, one path among many and so on. These are serious accusations against Christianity and Samuel takes them seriously, seeking to understand how and why they have taken hold, what part the church has had in making people so resistant to its message and what better stories it can tell in today’s world. Each chapter sets out traditional expressions of Christian beliefs, engages with the arguments against them and then seeks to express those truths afresh as stories that can inform and shape our lives. A study guide for groups is also included.

This bestselling book is for those who may be feeling drawn to Jesus but who are faced with difficult questions standing squarely in their path. For Christians, it will deepen their convictions and give them fresh confidence in defending their faith to skeptical friends, or during the hardest of times, when they have to defend their faith to themselves in moments of doubt.

How to Pray: A Simple Guide for Normal People
REF 2666 RRP £13.99 Aslan £10.49
Nothing could possibly matter more than learning to discern the authentic voice of God, but few things in life are more susceptible to delusion, deception and downright abuse. Having addressed God's silence in God on Mute, and then How to Pray his previous bestseller, Pete Greig is back to bring wisdom and guidance to one of the most pressing and perplexing aspects of universal Christian experience - How to Hear God. Exploring the story of Christ's playful, poignant conversation on the road to Emmaus, Pete draws deeply from the insights of a wide range of Christian traditions. He weaves together the evangelical emphasis upon hearing God in the Bible and the charismatic commitment to hearing God in the prophetic, with the contemplative understanding of God's 'still, small voice' within.

Augustine's Life of Prayer, Learning and Love
Cally Hammond
What can we learn from Augustine? There are many books that tell the life story of Augustine and how he has been fundamental in shaping Western Christian theology and practice. This is not one of them. This book is about how he became a Christian - the problems he faced; the doubts he struggled with. It is about how he made sense of his belief in God and shared it with other people. It is about how he learned to read the Bible and to pray. It is about the word which is at the heart of his Christian life - love.

What's the Point of Theology?: Wisdom, Wellbeing and Wonder
Alister McGrath
We may be aware that theology is the study of the nature of God and of religious belief. But why should that matter to us? What's the point of theology? In this wonderfully accessible book, renowned Christian theologian Alister McGrath explores just why theology is so important and what it can bring to our lives. Drawing on insights from his own experience of coming to Christianity from atheism, this exhilarating and enlightening volume reveals how theology offers a gateway to discovery: it helps us grow in wisdom; it contributes to our wellbeing; it sparks our innate sense of wonder. Above all, theology help us to grow in faith and love as we draw ever closer to the divine.

Seven Days that Divide the World: The Beginning According to Genesis and Science
John C. Lennox
What did the writer of Genesis mean by the first day? Are the seven days in Genesis 1 a literal week or a series of time periods? If I believe that the earth is 4.5 billion years old as cosmologists believe, am I denying the authority of Scripture? With examples from history, a brief but thorough exploration of the major interpretations and a look into the particular significance of the creation of human beings, Lennox suggests that Christians can heed modern scientific knowledge while staying faithful to the biblical narrative. He moves beyond a simple response to the controversy, insisting that Genesis teaches us far more about the God of Jesus Christ and about God's intention for creation, than it does about the age of the earth.

Together in Mission: From All Nations to All Nations
David & Rosemary Harley
Have you ever felt the call of God to go into all the world? David and Rosemary Harley did, and through simple obedience to that call they were able to have a worldwide impact on the spread of the Gospel. Together in Mission tells their story of leaving the UK to become full-time missionaries in Africa and, via several unexpected events, helping to run All Nations College and latterly lead OMF International. Their story is, in many ways, a remarkable one, but the heart of this book is to inspire anyone and everyone to answer the call of God on their lives and see where it might lead them. It also highlights the continued need for the global Church to work together for the sake of the gospel.

Jane was back in the UK on holiday when war broke out in 1939, but she immediately went back to Hungary to do all she could to protect the children at the school. She refused to leave in 1940 and again in March 1944, when Hungary was invaded by the Nazis. Her brave persistence led to her arrest by the Gestapo in April 1944. She died in Auschwitz just a few months later, at the age of 47.

A Little Book of Rest: Walking Out of Anxiety and Fear
Sheila Jacobs
Author Sheila Jacobs became ill in her early thirties with Ménière’s disease and it virtually destroyed her life, mainly due to anxiety. She became uncomfortable outside the confines of her own home, even when her physical health had radically improved. She simply couldn’t live a normal life for many years. In the end, realising just how much of a prison she was in, she found the answer. Her biggest problem was an inability to truly walk in forgiveness and trust. Forgiveness opened the door for a bigger experience of God, and consequently released her from the kind of fear that prevented her from even going to church. Sheila shares some of her story in A Little Book of Rest, which contains five weeks of material to help you overcome your fears and enjoy life to the full once again.

Standing in the Storm: Living With Faith and Cancer
Matt McChlery
Suffering is never pleasant or desirable. But what if we could learn something from our most bitter experiences that we would never have learned without having gone through them? During 2016, Matt and his wife experienced a time of intense suffering with the loss of an unborn child, complications around the sale of their house and the discovery that he had stage four non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (cancer). In this inspirational memoir, Matt deals with his experiences of loss and critical illness vulnerably and honestly while discovering that, if our hope is in Jesus, we have a secure foundation that will hold fast no matter how terrible the storm may be. Standing in the Storm is a profound and heartfelt book that wrestles with faith and loss, and shows that even in the darkest moments, God is with us; that life is beautiful and is worth living well.

Celtic Prayer: Caught Up in Love

The Georgians: The Deeds and Misdeeds of 18th Century Britain
Penelope J. Corfield
A comprehensive history of the Georgians, comparing past views of these exciting, turbulent, and controversial times with our attitudes today. The Georgian era is often seen as a time of innovations. It saw the end of monarchical absolutism, global exploration and settlements overseas, the world’s first industrial revolution, deep transformations in religious and cultural life and Britain’s role in the international trade in enslaved Africans. But how were these changes perceived by people at the time? And how do their viewpoints compare with attitudes today?

The Great Post Office Scandal: The Fight to Expose a Multimillion Pound IT Disaster Which Put Innocent People in Jail
Nick Wallis
This 'factual thriller' from the journalist Nick Wallis details a scandal which has been described as one of the most widespread and significant miscarriages of justice in legal history. On 23rd April 2021, the Court of Appeal quashed the convictions of 39 former Subpostmasters and ruled their prosecutions were an affront to the public conscience. They had been prosecuted by the Post Office using IT evidence from an unreliable computer system called Horizon. When the Post Office became aware that Horizon didn’t work properly, it covered it up. Nick describes how a group of Subpostmasters worked out what was going on, formed a campaign group and fought the government-owned Post Office through the courts to eventual victory.

The BBC: A People's History
David Hendy
In 1922, three men founded the BBC. In doing so, Arthur Burrows, Cecil Lewis, and John Reith set out to accomplish something utterly bold: using what had been a weapon of war - Marconi's wireless - to remake culture for the good of humanity. In The BBC: A People's History, professor and historian David Hendy traces the BBC from its maverick beginnings through war, the creation of television, changing public taste, austerity and massive cultural change. The BBC has constantly evolved, developing from one radio station, to television, then multiple channels and now the competition with the internet and streaming services. This is a history of a now global institution that defines Britain and created modern broadcasting; it is also a reflection of 100 years of British history.

Thorns in the Crown: The Story of the Coronation and What it Meant for Britain
Barry Turner
It is 1952 and Britain is changing. The Second World War is over, but the country is still scarred, recovering from six years of horror and still in the grip of food rationing. The British Empire is crumbling as countries fight for their independence both literally and physically. And George VI, the king who had refused to abandon London, is dead. Thorns in the Crown is the story of a country on the precipice, divided between those who held firm to old values and traditions and those who were fighting for modernity and progression. Featuring memories and reflections of those who were part of the coronation, Barry Turner presents a unique look at Britain as it came to terms with the second Elizabethan age.

The Diamond Queen: The Last Great Monarch?
Andrew Marr
In The Diamond Queen, Andrew Marr chronicles the Queen’s pivotal role at the centre of the state, which is largely hidden from the public gaze, and making a strong case for the institution itself. Arranged thematically, rather than chronologically, Marr dissects the Queen’s political relationships, crucially those with her Prime Ministers; he examines her role as Head of the Commonwealth and her deep commitment to that Commonwealth of nations; he looks at the drastic changes in the media since her accession in 1952 and how the monarchy has had to change and adapt as a result. Under her watchful eye, it has been thoroughly modernised but what does the future hold for the House of Windsor? This edition, fully revised and updated, features a new introduction and a new chapter that sets out to answer that crucial question.

You Are Free: Even If You Don't Feel Like it
Hope Virgo
With powerful honesty, Hope Virgo relates her experiences from being sexually abused in her youth group when she was just 13 and admitted to a mental health hospital with a failing heart at 17, to feeling like she was ready to end it all at 28, when a new hope found her after a stranger told her about Jesus. This is a raw and relatable memoir, in which Hope candidly lays out how she worked through her rage, hurt, disappointments and doubts, and the power that the Christian faith has had in her life. Sharing what she has learned, Hope's story is an inspiring look at one woman's fight to keep going, even in the face of confusion that sometimes God chooses not to heal us - or at least, not in the way we expect - and the ongoing stigma and shame that still follows mental health issues around.

Charles Martin uses his talents as a novelist to walk you through the lives of the disciples in the aftermath of the Resurrection and as they spread the message of the Gospel and 'turn the world upside down', leading up to Paul’s ministry in Thessonalica.

The Air We Breathe: How We All Came to Believe in Freedom, Kindness, Progress, and Equality
Glen Scrivener
Is Christianity history? Or is Christian history the deepest explanation of the modern world? Today in the west, many consider the church to be dead or dying. Christianity is seen as outdated, bigoted and responsible for many of society’s problems. This leaves many believers embarrassed about their faith and many outsiders wary of religion. But what if the Christian message is not the enemy of our modern Western values, but the very thing that makes sense of them? In this fascinating book, Glen Scrivener takes readers on a journey to discover how the teachings of Jesus not only turned the ancient world upside down, but continue to underpin the way we think of life, worth and meaning.

The Bible is full of stories of people facing surprisingly modern issues. Within its pages, people have wrestled with issues such as living with depression, losing a child, overcoming shame, surviving abuse and searching for meaning. Yet these are not the stories of the well-known heroes of faith, but those of people whose names are not even recorded in the Bible. Jeannie Kendall brings these unnamed people to life, reimagining their story from the biblical text in order to hear their voice today. The issues and experiences unpacked in these reflections are then mirrored by a relevant testimony from someone who has dealt with similar situations in today's world.

Navigating a World of Grace: The Promise of Generous Orthodoxy

‘Generous orthodoxy’ is a liberating outlook that encourages the Church to embrace different traditions of belief, worship and prayer within a broad framework of Christian faith. But is it really possible to be both generous and orthodox?
In Navigating a World of Grace, Graham Tomlin offers his own invigorating vision of a generous orthodoxy that is rooted in the creeds’ description of a God who is, by nature, the essence of generous grace. Looking at the history of the church, he explores how orthodoxy can enrich and enhance our perception of the world. Rather than restricting us, it liberates us to be generous in our expressions of faith.

Powerful Leaders?: When Church Leadership Goes Wrong and How to Prevent it

As understanding and awareness of abuse has grown, many revelations of church leaders abusing their power have come to light. How did the church get here? Powerful Leaders? exposes and explores how leaders are tempted away from a biblical model of leadership into illegitimate - and in the worst cases abusive - use of authority and power. Director of Living Leadership, a charity that focuses on healthy leadership and church culture, Marcus Honeysett traces how leaders move along a spectrum of healthy to unhealthy uses of power and position and offers practical wisdom for countering and preventing harmful leadership.

Big Questions series by Chris Morphew
Who Am I and Why Do I Matter?
Helps kids grow in faith and confidence by looking at what the Bible says about their identity. Sooner or later, kids ask big questions about themselves and their faith: Who am I? Where do I fit in? Am I good enough? What do people think of me? What does God think of me? Christian Studies teacher and school chaplain Chris Morphew has been answering big questions from kids for over a decade. In this warm, empathetic book, he shows children how to embrace and enjoy their identity as those loved by God and made in his image. He also gives lots of practical advice on how to remember what God says about who they really are. Readers will be helped to replace fear and anxiety with faith and confidence as they find their self-worth in what God says about them.

A People's Church: A History of the Church of England
Jeremy Morris
Weaving social, political, and religious history together with church music and architecture, A People's Church is a clear-eyed look at Anglican history through the ages. The transformative 1534-1660 period shaped not only the Church of England but the country itself, encompassing the Reformation, the return to Catholicism under Mary, and the Civil War. This was closely followed by the Restoration of the monarchy in 1688, the expulsion of the Dissenters, and the 1689 Bill of Rights. By the time of John Henry Newman and the Industrial Revolution, the church was fragile. How, then, has it endured? And what of its future?

John the Baptist: His Life and Afterlife
Josephine Wilkinson
This historical investigation into the real John the Baptist brings to light one of the most influential figures in Christianity and western civilisation. Two thousand years later, his life and example are still an influence for millions. John the Baptist’s importance is such that he appears in all four Gospels, together with the writings of Josephus, and is inextricably linked to the life of Jesus. John was a friend, inspiration and forerunner for Jesus ‒ and a respected figure in his own lifetime ‒ yet the historical facts of his life are unknown to most. Josephine Wilkinson assembles the evidence to show us the man whose views led him to be sentenced to death and beheaded by Herod. Based on the ancient sources, the author gets as close as it is possible to get to a biography of John, including an account of his relationship with Jesus.

Martin Luther: Catholic Dissident
Peter Stanford
The 31st of October 2017 marked the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther pinning his 95 ‘Theses’ - or reform proposals - to the door of his local university church in Wittenberg. Most scholars now agree that the details of this eye-catching gesture are more legend than hammer and nails, but what is certainly true is that, on this day, the Augustinian Friar and theologian issued an outspokenly blunt challenge to his own Catholic Church to reform itself from within, which ultimately precipitated a huge religious and political upheaval right across Europe and divided mainstream Christianity ever after. Journalist Peter Stanford looks at Martin Luther from within his Catholic context, examining his actual aims for Catholicism as well as his enduring legacy - and where he might fit within the Church today.
