Welcome to your September - October magazine!

Your friendly, independent online bookshop

Dear Friends

Welcome to your September-October magazine!

It may seem a little early to be thinking about Christmas but nevertheless we’ve included a selection of Advent & Christmas books that have just been published, along with a lovely selection of cards, candles, calendars and more!

Our main feature is Pastor Tyler Staton’s new book, Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools. Along with Pete Greig, Tyler is deeply involved in the 24/7 Prayer Movement, recognising our need and importance of prayer in our lives.

Once again we present, on page 8, Defenders of the Faith, which looks ahead to the next coronation – something which will soon be a reality to us, following the sad news of the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II.

I hope you enjoy the full range of books and products we have on offer in this issue and we hope to get our next issue out to you by the end of October.

Author

Tyler Staton is the Lead Pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, and the National Director of 24-7 Prayer USA. He is passionate about pursuing prayer - communion and conversation with God - while living deeply, poetically, wildly, and freely in the honest and gritty realities of day-to-day life. Tyler believes that justice is kinship, stories are a gift, and prayer is an invitation. He lives in Portland with his wife Kirsten, and their sons Hank, Simon, and Amos.

24-7 Prayer was born from one small student-led prayer vigil that God invaded and quickly spread into 100+ nations, touching 2 million people of all ages in over 12 thousand locations, and landing in almost every denomination: traditional and non-traditional expressions alike. Collectively, prayer has continued non-stop night and day since that 1st vigil in 1999; putting presence-centred, missionminded prayer back at the heart of communities all over the world and leaving a global movement of prayer, mission, and justice in its wake.

Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools: An Invitation to the Wonder and Mystery of Prayer

An invitation to an ordinary yet radical way of life, using historic Christian practices as both inspiring vision and practical instruction for how to encounter the wondrous, mysterious, living God through prayer. Prayer is the source of Jesus' most astonishing miracles and the subject of Jesus's most audacious promises, and yet, most peopleeven most Bible-believing Christians - find prayer to be boring, obligatory, disappointing, confusing, or, most often, all of the above.

New for 2022!«

If you've ever felt this way, Praying Like Monks, Living Like Fools is your invitation to trade your conceptions and misconceptions about prayer for prayer in its purest form: a vital, sustaining, powerful connection with God that is more real and alive than you could have ever imagined. In these pages, Tyler Staton addresses common roadblocks to prayer and gives you the confidence to come to God just as you are.

Love has been described in so many ways, but do we really understand what it means? The Lord's Prayer: Learning from Jesus on What, Why, and How to Pray Kevin DeYoung

More by Max Lucado on page 20

Best-Selling author Kevin DeYoung explores Jesus’ foundational prayer. Christians know the importance of prayer, but the act of praying can be a real challenge. Some have the desire, but not always the will; others worry they don’t do it well. Books about prayer usually emphasize spiritual discipline, but that can foster more guilt than reassurance. So how can Christians improve their prayer life, embracing the privilege of communicating with God? In The Lord’s Prayer, Kevin DeYoung closely examines Christ’s model for prayer, giving readers a deeper understanding of its content and meaning, and how it works in the lives of God’s people. Walking through the Lord’s Prayer word by word, DeYoung helps believers gain the conviction to develop a stronger prayer life, and a sense of freedom to do so.

What is the Lord’s Prayer? In The Prayer of the Lord, Dr. R. C. In short, Christ gave the Lord’s Prayer to teach His disciples about prayer, and Dr. Sproul, in his trademark fashion, brings out many of the truths Christ intended for His followers to learn.

Just Ask: The Joy of Confident, Bold, Patient, Relentless, Shameless, Dependent, Grateful, Powerful, Expectant Prayer

J.D. Greear

Prayer can be a struggle. Sometimes we don’t think it will make a difference, or we rely on ourselves, or we’re just too busy. And even if we do pray regularly, it can feel more like a duty than a delight. J.D. Greear shows us how prayer was a non-negotiable daily staple in Jesus’ life, more essential to him than eating or sleeping, and therefore why we need to pray as well. He shows us how we can enjoy the same source of power as our Lord and the early church when we learn to ‘just ask’ and depend on our heavenly Father as they did.

Going Higher with God in Prayer: Cultivating a Lifelong Dialogue

A. W. Tozer

Learning how to pray is one of the greatest challenges in a Christian's life. A.W. Tozer pointed out that the church's greatest curse is unanswered prayer, and that many people do not seem bothered by that. Maybe they don't understand what answered prayer is all about. Tozer outlines this as only he can, describing the kind of prayer God answers and the kind of prayer that leaves Him silent. Ultimately, you have to ask yourself: are my prayers today more powerful and effective than they were a year ago? Our good Father wants them to be! The book opens with Jacob's Ladder and its theme of ascending into God's very presence. What better place to begin dialoging with God? Only He can teach us what is on His heart, what His will is, and what our part in it could be.

Be still. For some, these two simple words a welcome invitation to slow down. For others, they feel impossible, out of reach in our increasingly noisy world, or simply just too hard to maintain. From memorising scripture and prayer running to noticing beauty everywhere, he demonstrates how we don’t need to be static for our hearts to be still, and how even in the midst of a full, busy life, we can spend quiet time with God.

Defenders of the Faith: The British Monarchy, Religion and the Next Coronation Catherine Pepinster

In 1953, millions across Britain and the world were glued to their TV sets, watching the first televised coronation of a British monarch. What they saw was a deeply religious, medieval ritual. Since then Elizabeth II's reign has been profoundly shaped by her Christian faith, expressed in her coronation vows and in her 70 years as Queen, from her role as head of the Church of England, to her annual Christmas broadcasts, her encounters with Popes, Islam and the other religions of 21st Century Britain and the Commonwealth. But what part will religion play in the reign of Charles III and in the coronation of a Prince of Wales who once pledged to be defender of faith, not just defender of the Christian faith?

The Creed in Slow Motion Martin Kochanski

The Creed is the bones of our faith. In all our different ways, it makes us who we are. But when we stand up and recite the Creed in unison, we have no time to contemplate what it is that we are committing ourselves to. The words rush past, their meaning blurred by familiarity. If we could only slow them down and hear them properly, they would have the power to change worlds. That is what The Creed in Slow Motion aims to do. This is a book for people who like to think things through from first principles. In forty short chapters, with clarity and wit, The Creed in Slow Motion draws examples from real-life stories, history and even science to uncover the core claims of Christianity.

Martin Luther: The Man who Started the Reformation

Thomas Lindsay Martin Luther upset his father's plan by becoming a monk rather than a lawyer, but by the age of 29 he was a professor of theology. In addition to his college duties he preached almost every day and visited people on pastoral duties - he kept two secretaries very busy. Luther's father, meanwhile, became a town councillor, the part owner of six mines and owned a large house in the main street. What happened to make this son of the upwardly mobile establishment into the revolutionary who nailed 95 Theses onto the church door at Wittenberg, affecting not only the whole of the Christian church but also breaking the power of a European superstate? This is the story of a passionate, flawed and courageous man who loved his family and the people around him; a man who went further in challenging the status quo than any other in history, the man who started the Reformation.

The Unquenchable Flame: Discovering The Heart Of The Reformation Michael Reeves

Burning pyres, nuns on the run, stirring courage, comic relief. The story of the Protestant Reformation is a gripping tale, packed with drama. It was set in motion on 31 October 1517 when Martin Luther posted his ninety-five theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg. What motivated the Reformers? And what were they really like? In this lively, accessible and informative introduction, Michael Reeves brings to life the colourful characters of the Reformation, unpacks their ideas, and shows the profound and personal relevance of Reformation thinking for today.

Confronting Jesus: 9 Encounters with the Hero of the Gospels

Jesus is the most famous human being in all of history. But while many people have a basic sketch of Jesus in their minds, comparatively few have taken time to read the four biographies of his life in the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

In Confronting Jesus, Rebecca McLaughlin shares important biblical context to help all readers see why the Gospels should be taken seriously as historical documents. Exploring eyewitness testimony about Jesus, McLaughlin points to him as a first-century Jewish man who is the Son of God, King of the Jews, mighty healer, greatest teacher, lover of sinners, suffering servant, perfect sacrifice, and universal Lord.

A London Sparrow: The Inspiring True Story of Gladys Aylward Phyllis Thompson

A down-to-earth London girl, without many prospects, commits to Christ as an eighteen year old and the Lord uses her beyond what anyone could have imagined. Gladys Aylward, a little but determined woman, became a mighty gospel force amongst her beloved Chinese people as she forsook everything, even her own safety, for the sake of their physical and eternal wellbeing. Her Christ-led adventure takes her on a perilous solitary journey from London to China, and sees her escorting hundreds of children through a war zone - even stopping a riot in a Chinese prison! Throughout it all, she would rather die with ‘her people’ than desert them. Her gospel living challenges us today, as she demonstrates a simple, transparent and challenging faith in the God whom she whole-heartedly trusted.

Miles to Go Before I Sleep: Letters on Hope, Death and Learning to Live Claire Gilbert

At the age of 54 Claire Gilbert was diagnosed with myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood. The prognoses ranged from surviving only a few months to living for several decades, with no guarantee of which outcome was to be hers. It was a shocking diagnosis into uncertainty, or rather, into only one certainty: death. But Claire discovered that facing her own mortality was liberating. Claire asked her siblings and a small group of friends if they would let her write to them with total honesty about what she was going through, as she was going through it. This is an honest, luminous account of what Claire has gone through and what keeps her going, a deeply spiritual meditation on life and suffering and an exploration of how faith is no simple solace, but provides a whole new plane of meaning during these liminal moments.

Where is God in a Messed-Up World?

Roger Carswell

This book asks (and answers) questions that people are asking about God, life and suffering. If God exists and really is a God of love, then why doesn't he stop the suffering and problems in our world? People ask this question, often in the wake of major tragedies. Glib answers don’t help. While investigating the answers, Roger Carswell is realistic enough to admit that there are things God reveals to us, and things he doesn't reveal. He argues that the starting point is to find out who God is, and to figure out if he can be trusted – even if we don't have all the answers. The author's own experience of suffering with depression, and the real–life stories that are included, make this a compassionate and encouraging look at one of the toughest questions about the Christian faith.

The Hardest Problem: God, Evil and Suffering Rupert Shortt

To many, the problem of evil and suffering constitutes by far the most serious objection to mainstream religious belief. For all its starkness and salience, though, the dilemma is also widely misinterpreted. That visceral feelings often dominate discussion is understandable on one level. But this can displace the clearer-headed thinking needed to shed greater light on the subject. Rupert Shortt shows that belief in a divine Creator is much more coherent intellectually than many sceptics suppose. He goes on to discuss the nature of evil from a classical Abrahamic standpoint and how Christian resources in particular offer guidance in an area where raw emotion, conceptual thought and the deepest trials of the spirit overlap.

A Place at the Table: Faith, Hope and Hospitality

Miranda Harris & Jo Swinney

At a time when loneliness and isolation have reached unprecedented levels, it has never been more important for Christians to embrace the practice of hospitality. For many, it is a lost art - a practice we have forgotten, neglected or distorted beyond all recognition.

From the simple act of preparing vegetables to the warm welcome of a stranger, co-authors Miranda Harris and her daughter Jo Swinney re-define hospitality for the modern age.

Drawing on biblical insights and a deep well of experience, this is a warm invitation to embrace the loving kindness of others. To be hospitable doesn't require culinary excellence or matching cutlery - it doesn't even require a home of one's own; true hospitality offers a welcome into imperfection and messiness, a place to belong and be embraced.

In this book, Dane Ortlund reflects on this subversive grace as it uniquely emerges in each of the four Gospel accounts. Skilfully weaving together uplifting wisdom and reassuring, practical guidance, this is a book for anyone looking for everyday disciplines to help them care for their soul.

The End of the Christian Life J. Todd Billings

In The End of the Christian Life, Todd Billings urges Christians to embrace our mortality in our daily life and faith. This is the journey of genuine discipleship, Billings says, following the crucified and resurrected Lord in a world of distraction and false hopes. Drawing on his experience as a professor and father living with incurable cancer, Billings offers a personal yet deeply theological account of the gospel's expansive hope for small, mortal creatures. This book challenges us to walk a strange but wondrous path: in the midst of joy and lament, to receive mortal limits as a gift, an opportunity to give ourselves over to the Lord of life.

Companions on the Bethlehem Road

Rachel Boulding

This book of daily Bible readings and reflections for Advent and Christmas is based around spiritual insights gleaned from some of the best-loved poets of the past - TS Eliot, George Herbert, Tennyson and Auden, among others. While they come from different ages and backgrounds, they wrestled with the same questions that we do, about God, love, hope, and suffering. This book is not a literary study of their work, but a quest to see what they can tell us about life and faith today. Their poems are quoted in short sections, with suggestions about what they might mean for us now. As we travel the road to Christmas in the company of these great poets, we will find our minds enlarged and our hearts touched with something of the wonder and joy of this special season.

Sharing the Christmas Story: From Reading to Living the Gospel Sally Welch

In this year's BRF Advent book Sally Welch explores two questions: What is the Christmas story really about, and how do we share it? Through each week of Advent, a different aspect of the Christmas story is examined: light, promise, mystery, love, peace and hope. Within each week, the days are focused on the ways in which the Christmas story is shared: prophecies, journeys, new life, signs, poems, stories and conversations. Each day offers a Bible passage, followed by a reflection and prayer activity. Suggestions for group study and group study questions are also included.

The Coming of the King: 25 Readings for Advent J. C. Ryle

For most of us, Advent is synonymous with Christmas. After all, don't our Advent calendars count down to December 25th? Isn't Advent a time to think about the birth of the baby in the manger, the angels and the shepherd? It certainly is. Advent means the coming of the special baby who was laid in a manger in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago. But J.C. Ryle would also remind people of the 'Second Advent' when Jesus will come again. On that day, Jesus will return to our world, not as a baby but as the unmistakable King of kings and Lord of lords.

Bethlehem Bound: Journeying with the Characters of Christmas Andrew Nunn

It was not only Mary and Joseph who journeyed to Bethlehem – all the characters and creatures we meet in the nativity stories found their way to the manger, summoned by stars, angels or political circumstance. Each time we celebrate Christmas, we travel there too and open ourselves to transformation. Bethlehem Bound is a daily spiritual travel companion for the season, beginning with the great Advent antiphons that herald the feast, and ending with the Presentation in the Temple. Each day it travels with a different character from scripture and the Christian tradition – Jesse, Anna, Gabriel, the donkey, the innkeeper and his wife, the shepherds, the martyrs we commemorate at Christmas and many more. The journey had its challenges for the original characters and it will for us, but at its end is a wondrous gift from God - God’s own self in a baby laid in a manger.

Brightest and Best: 31 Advent Devotions on Jesus

Philippa Ruth Wilson

In a world of poverty, prejudice, and sickness it can be hard to sing tis the season to be jolly and mean it. We are in a world laden with darkness and grief, and yet by the end of November, so much around us seems to be yelling: HAVE A HAPPY CHRISTMAS. Is this what advent is then? A building pressure to put reality on hold for a while, and to just Have a Good Time? Brightest and Best is a collection of advent devotions that point to the comfort that God has promised: the coming of Jesus. Philippa Wilson communicates joyful, uplifting, and glorious Christmas truths in fresh ways. The purpose of each devotion is to stir up hope and faith, and praise for Jesus, as well as to encourage readers to think biblically and deeply about the carols we sing each year.

Sleepers Wake: Getting Serious About Climate Change

The problem of climate change is greater and more urgent than many of us realise. For while we may appreciate the challenges posed by technical and political issues, the fundamental problem, as Nicholas Holtam argues, is spiritual. The words of scientist Gus Speth, former Director of the National Research Defence Council in the US, are highly pertinent: ‘I used to think the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, eco system collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address those problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy – and to deal with those we need a spiritual and cultural transformation – and we scientists don’t know how to do that.’ Offering a meditation about climate change and the environment that is brilliantly relevant to the season, this book focuses over 4 weeks on the topics of Now, Spirituality, Creation and Hope. Each section is illustrated with 3 fine art paintings to prompt reflection, prayer and action.

Strong: How God Equipped 11 Ordinary Men with Extraordinary Power (and Can Do the Same for You)

These inspiring stories of eleven men show what true strength is—standing firm for God when no one else does. By reading about the humility of Alvin York, the courageous conviction of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the strong faith of Jackie Robinson, and the missionary heart of George Liele, readers will see what true strength really looks like. But even more, they’ll encounter a personal God who strengthens His children 'with all power, according to his glorious might' (Colossians 1:11). Rather than feeling the need to live up to impossible standards, readers will see that true power comes from God, and the same God who strengthened the men in this book will help them too.

Publishes 23rd September

Delve into the world of fourteenth-century England in this thrilling historical mystery, the fifteenth in the brilliant Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton. Edmund Harkins has gone missing. Few in Bampton liked him, knowing him to be a wife-beater and distinctly unsavoury character, so when some hungry pigs unearth his corpse from a shallow grave, there is hardly an outpouring of grief. As bailiff, it is Hugh de Singleton’s duty to bring Edmund’s killer to justice. But where is he to start investigating when almost everyone in the village has a motive? And when everyone is pleased to see the scoundrel dead, who knows how far they might go to help someone get away with murder?

The fifteenth volume in the Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton can be thoroughly enjoyed by long time fans of the series but can also be read as a stand-alone novel!

For as long as she can remember, Allie Massey, a gifted physical therapist, has dreamed of making her grandparents' ten-acre estate in the middle of the city into a trauma recovery center using equine therapy, a dream her grandmother, Nana Dale, embraced wholeheartedly with her financial support. But when her grandmother's will is read, the money left to Allie and her family is barely enough to cover the cost of hiring a lawyer, and worse yet, the property has been sold to a contractor. As Allie cleans out her grandmother's home and searches for the missing chest, convinced there is money somewhere, she uncovers bits and pieces of her grandmother's past with her champion filly, Essie, a young man named Tommy, and one fateful night in 1943 during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Act Justly is the final book in the trilogy begun by Walk Humbly and Love Mercy, together forming an introduction to Christian faith and life.

Act Justly: Practices to Reshape the World

Taking their inspiration from a question posed in the Old Testament, ‘What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God’, each book in the series offers a practical ethic for living that is rooted in timeless wisdom.

Focusing on two of the most outstanding justice issues of our day – racial and climate injustice – as well as individual stories of injustice, Act Justly offers practical ways of thinking about justice and cultivating habits of justice to foster the life of God, so that injustice can be challenged and the world can be changed.
