Welcome to your May-June magazine!

Inside this magazine: Your friendly, independent online bookshop Dear Friends, Welcome to this edition of your magazine in which we are delighted to present a host of new books. We have highlighted some key titles (Ones to watch) and some classics (Christian Classics). I am sure we are all looking forward to gradually being able to worship together in church, meet old friends and make new ones. Maybe we will have been challenged by the sermon, enjoyed worship and been inspired anew by being together in the presence of God. Some of us will be inspired by the centenary of the birth of possibly the most influential evangelical voice in the UK: John Stott. Some titles are peppered throughout this magazine; all are available on the website. Others may want to get organised for the church year ahead: diaries and lectionaries are on p10. Finally, don’t forget our SALE on pages 15 to 18. Some stocks are low; so remember that the early bird catches the worm! Enjoy your selection!

rancis Chan is an American Protestant author, teacher and preacher. He is the former teaching pastor of Cornerstone Community Church, an Evangelical church in Simi Valley, California, founded by Chan in 1994. He also founded Eternity Bible College in 2004, and served as its early chancellor until 2010. Chan has been a board member of several Christian and social justice organisations, including Children's Hunger Fund and Gospel for Asia. He has authored and co-authored numerous books including Crazy Love, a New York Times bestseller. Chan has also served as an ambassador for Care for Children. Until Unity

Francis Chan The Church becomes more divided each day. Many seek reassurance or perceived unity by creating doctrinal statements, but that misses the point. Doctrine is necessary but it is not the solution. In his new book Until Unity, Francis Chan shows readers that the real problem is shallow or even non-existent love for each other.

NEW

Do we truly understand the gospel? Do we believe in the miracle of the Holy Spirit in us? As believers, Christians are supposed to yield the fruit of supernatural love for one another. Instead, we allow jealousy and selfish ambition to prevail. Although the Bible commands unity, some will resist these unifying efforts. We see it every day. We have to hate sin, love truth, and pursue unity for the Church. This is messy, but no matter what, Christians must give everything they have to the pursuit of a unified, restored Bride. The Contemporary Woman: Can She Really Have it All?

Michele Guinness At a time when the status of women is still being debated and challenged, how can women play a leading role in society, the workplace and the church? Michele Guinness has been there and done that - not without opposition and not without compromise. In this all-embracing, honest reflection on womanhood, Michele uses her own upbringing in the Jewish community to re-examine the views and counterviews on the role of women throughout the Christian tradition and culture, drawing inspiration from scripture, history and personal experience.

NEW

The Contemporary Woman celebrates a host of women through the ages - from the great biblical matriarchs to the modern-day trailblazers - who have inherited a passionate determination to pursue God's radical call. Michele will encourage women everywhere, of every age, to follow their hearts and inspire a new generation to discover what it means to be a woman. Pb | 320 pgs | HODDER & STOUGHTON

Chosen: Lost and Found Between Christianity and Judaism

Giles Fraser In 2011, the Occupy movement set up camp around St Paul's Cathedral. Giles Fraser, who was Canon Chancellor of the Cathedral, gave them his support. It ended in disaster. This remarkable book is the story of the personal crisis that followed, and its surprising consequences. As he found himself crushed between the forces of protest, the needs of the church and the implacable City of London, he resigned, and was plunged into depression. His life fell apart and he battled with ideas of suicide. Fraser then found himself by chance one day in Liverpool, outside the great Victorian synagogue once presided over by a distant ancestor. Suddenly he realised that there was a great deal he did not know about himself, about his relatives and about his Jewish roots.

Bouncing Forwards: Notes on Resilience, Courage and Change

You'll bounce back! How many of us have heard these well-meaning words when faced with mental or physical health challenges, trauma or the loss of dreams? And yet, life's battles can leave us scarred and changed. Why would we want to go back when what we've been through has taught us so much? It's time to bounce forwards instead. Alongside: Reflections on Jesus’ Struggles and How He Meets Us in Our Struggles

Henry Martin Jesus' life was by no means struggle-free. There were many things he found difficult: his family, his friends, the crowds, religious people, religious institutions and his own destiny. This is all a blessing to us today: because he struggled, he understands our own struggles intimately, and the Gospels record many cases of things he said from which we can learn, grow and draw strength. In Alongside, Henry Martin considers these words of Jesus in a book suitable for daily reading, with prayers and reflections. It has been designed so that it can be read during Lent, Advent, or at any other time of year, with questions specially tailored for each season. Pb | 240 pgs | DLT

Biographies Up From the Ashes: A Syrian Christian Doctor’s Story of Sacrifice, Endurance and Hope

'Dr A' with Samara Levy In one of the most brutal wars of the twenty-first century, millions of Syrians fled for a safer life elsewhere. Dr A was one of the few medical doctors that stayed. Driven by his Christian faith, Dr A risked his own safety, and that of his family, to care for innocent lives caught in the epicentre of a war zone through the most aggressive years of the Syrian war. His world exploded and collapsed around him, losing his home, hospital, family and friends. Yet he remained uncompromising in his commitment to serve his people, through these near-apocalyptic events. Up From the Ashes is a gripping story of sacrifice and endurance - fuelled by prayer and bound by hope.

This Hallelujah Banquet: How the End of What We Were Reveals Who We Can Be Eugene H. Peterson The book of Revelation is filled with angels and dragons, fantastic beasts and golden cities, bottomless pits and mysterious numbers. It's dramatic, sure - but what exactly does that have to do with the tests we face today? In this never-before-published work, Eugene H. Peterson traces the dramatic symbolism found in John's letters to the seven churches, uncovering Christ's instructions to these ancient communities. Along the way, we encounter seven key tests: of our love, suffering, truth, holiness, reality, witness, and commitment - tests from Christ that can deepen our faith and even shape our future. Deep Calls to Deep: Spiritual Formation in the Hard Places of Life

Tony Horsfall The book of Psalms offers honest insights into the reality of life with God, reflecting every human emotion and situation. This book offers reflections drawn from selected Psalms to guide us as we begin to make sense of our own history with God, and also points us to how we can get to know God better here and now, preparing us for whatever may lie ahead. Theology Reimagining Britain: Foundations for Hope

Justin Welby It is now three years since Justin Welby first published his Reimagining Britain. The fundamental message of that book remains as urgent as ever. But in this revised and expanded edition, Welby has taken fully into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and all the social and political unrest that has ensued. If anything, the new edition of Archbishop Welby's book is even more important than its predecessor. Here is a radical vision for 21st century Britain.

NEW

The thesis of this book is that the work of reimagining is as great as it was in 1945, and will happen either by accident - and thus badly - or deliberately. Welby explores the areas in which values are translated into action, including the traditional three of recent history: health (especially public and mental), housing and education. Along the way, he came to understand that far from being the same, Islam and Christianity are profoundly different. The Unveiling: What the Book of Revelation Says About Our World Today

David Fellingham The Book of Revelation draws the prophetic purposes of God together, with over five hundred allusions from other parts of the Bible - and it is the Bible itself which interprets this amazing book, not world events. However, we can understand what is happening in our world through the prophetic lens of Revelation, and even with such devastating events as wars, natural disasters and pandemics, God is totally in control. The Unveiling brings a perspective to answer the many questions David has been asked during his 40+ years as a Christian leader. His answers are not speculative, but firmly rooted in Scripture. He admits that he does not have the answer for every detail, but whatever view we may hold, the certain fact is: Jesus is coming again. Pb | 168 pgs | MALCOLM DOWN

Knowing Me, Knowing God: Six Theological Keys to Scripture

This wonderfully encouraging book by Bible expositor Richard Coekin will spur you on to live by faith in Jesus as you examine the witnesses of Hebrews 11. The refreshing honesty of their stories will help you manage your expectations in a world of lies and spin. They will remind you of the glory and blessing that await you at the finishing line. And they will encourage you to see that Jesus is the real Hero of the faith and that his Spirit will enable you to endure through exhaustion, opposition and discouragement. The Badly Behaved Bible: Thinking Again About the Story of Scripture

NEW

Nick Page We're told that the Bible is beautiful, uplifting and a joy to read - but, while we know this is how we're supposed to feel about it, in reality many of us find the very opposite. On opening the Bible, we are faced with a multitude of problems, and we end up believing things about the Bible that the Bible never claims for itself. In his honest and accessible style, Nick Page urges us to re-discover a fresh look at the Bible as the scriptural bedrock of the Christian faith, to learn how we can undo unhelpful ways of reading it and demystifying its purpose and scope. Nick tackles what the Bible is and what it isn't, how we can critically read this inspired text and how we approach the difficulties in its content. Pb | 272 pgs | HODDER & STOUGHTON

Christian Life Brave by Faith: God-Sized

Confidence in a Post-Christian World

NEW

Alister Begg What does it look like to live with joy in a society that does not like what Christians believe, say or do? It’s tempting to grow angry, keep our heads down, retreat or just give up altogether. But this isn’t the first time that God’s people have had to learn how to live in a pagan world that opposes God’s rule. In this realistic yet positive book, renowned Bible teacher Alistair Begg examines the first seven chapters of Daniel to show us how to live bravely, confidently and obediently in an increasingly secular society. Readers will see that God is powerful and God is sovereign, and even in the face of circumstances that appear to be prevailing against his people, we may trust him entirely. We can be as brave as Daniel if we have faith in Daniel’s God! Pb | 128 pgs | GOOD BOOK COMPANY

Never Too Far: Coming Back from Defeat and Disappointment to Purpose and Power Louie Giglio A person can never get too far from God that they can’t get back to Him and have a fresh start. There is always a way forward that will prevent a person’s current circumstances from having the final say in life. God has a plan for a comeback. Louie Giglio addresses the feelings we all have from time to time that life is disappointing and not working out as we’d hoped. We long for something different, something better, something more. Never Too Far celebrates new beginnings and offers readers encouragement and perspective, and is for those who feel frustrated or confused; who are suffering or feel as though life doesn’t make sense. Singing in Babylon: Finding Purpose in Life's Second Choices

Jeff Lucas Everyone has to live with second choices - events and circumstances that they would not choose. Daniel was a man whose life was filled with second choices, but he did more than just survive; he stayed faithful to God and thrived. So what is there to learn from his story? Jeff Lucas challenges readers to ask, 'How can we, like Daniel, be faithful in the "Babylon" of second choices?' Down-to-earth but inspirational, Singing in Babylon explores how the reader, like Daniel, can find purpose and meaning in life's second choices. Pb | 224 pgs | DAVID C COOK

Christian Life Love Your Church: 8 Great Things About Being a Church Member

Tony Merida How to grow in love for your church. God calls us to be 'devoted to one another in love' (Romans 12:10). What does this look like for us today? How can we be the kind of church member who makes a real difference? This engaging book by Tony Merida explores what church is, why being part of it is exciting, and why it’s worthy of our love and commitment. He sets out eight privileges and responsibilities of a church member: to belong, to welcome, to gather, to care, to serve, to honor, to witness and to send. Pb | 160 pgs | GOOD BOOK COMPANY

Dear England: Finding Hope, Taking Heart and Changing the World

Stephen Cottrell Inspired by a conversation with a barista who asked him why he became a priest, this is the Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell's extended answer to that question - as well as the letter he'd like to write to a divided country that no longer sees the relevance or value of the Christian narrative. Archbishop Stephen is a much-admired voice within the church, but in this book he writes for a more general audience, and those who might call themselves spiritual seekers - as well as anyone who is concerned about the life and unity of the UK. A short, beautiful book, this is at once both contemplative and deeply practical, which will speak to both Christians and those on the edges of faith. Hb | 192 pgs | HODDER & STOUGHTON

The Space Between: The Disruptive Seasons We Want to Hide From, and Why We Need Them

Mark Bradford The ‘liminal seasons of life’ – those transition times in which we have left one season of stability but not yet arrived at the next – can be times of great disorientation. Yet, for good or for ill, they are also the most transformative. In The Space Between, Mark Bradford provides the reader with a biblical and theological understanding of such seasons of life, connects them with the resources to live faithfully through them, and offers strength and hope for the journey.

The Humble Church: Becoming the Body of Christ

Martyn Percy In this bold and provocative invitation, Martyn Percy imagines what the post-pandemic Church might look like and sets out what it needs to learn. It argues that the Church needs to stop obsessing about itself – its size, its strategies to shore up decline, its waning public influence – and rediscover how to live as the body of Christ. In other words, what does it need to do in order to become more like Christ? As Christ poured out his life for the sake of others, the author considers ways in which the Church might imitate Christ in practice today. Incisive, imaginative and engagingly written, this book will resonate deeply with many lay and ordained members of the Church. Pb | 160 pgs | CANTERBURY PRESS

Hope in Times of Fear: The Resurrection and the Meaning of Easter

Timothy Keller The resurrection of Jesus is at the heart of the Christian faith, bringing God's power - which will some day heal and renew the world - into our lives now. That power is here only partially, but substantially; and this gives Christians a realistic, but irrepressible hope. It is a hope for change in our lives and in our society; a hope that changes Christians in every way, shaping every aspect of our lives. Hope in Times of Fear unlocks the meaning of both the cross and Jesus' resurrection. Here the central message of the Christian faith is revealed - with unshakable belief, piercing insight and a profound message of hope for the world. Hb | 272 pgs | HODDER & STOUGHTON

Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers

Dane Ortlund Christians can easily feel that Jesus is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. They know what Christ has done for them. But who is he? How does he feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? In Matthew 11, Jesus describes himself as 'gentle and lowly in heart', longing for his people to find rest in him. This book reflects on his words, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of Christ’s affections for sinners and encouraging believers as they journey, weary and faltering, toward heaven. What on Earth is Heaven?

James Paul What happens to us when we die? Will heaven be a place of fluffy clouds, angels and cherubs playing harps? Is the Christian faith just about securing a place in heaven when we die? In What on Earth is Heaven? James Paul explores the radical truth of what the Bible says about heaven and the afterlife, and its relevance for your life here and now on earth. Unpacking the biblical story of the separation and reunion of heaven and earth, he shows that heaven isn't a place somewhere 'out there' but a dimension of reality - the dimension where God's Will is done. The good news isn't that we get to escape to heaven, but that God invites us to be a part of His plan to bring the kingdom of heaven to our square inch of the earth. Pb | 200 pgs | IVP

Into All the World: The Missionary Vision of Luther and Calvin

Lindsay Brown Luther and Calvin are remembered for their writings and theological debates, but do we think of them as great missionaries? Can we learn from them for mission work today? The Reformation had a defining and far–reaching impact on the western world and beyond. It not only touched on church life and key doctrinal issues but had implications in terms of ethics, the birth of liberal democracy, education, the arts, science, the economy and much more. This all evolved as part of Calvin’s and Luther’s evangelistic vision. With such a legacy, this vision is worth your attention. Pb | 128 pgs | CHRISTIAN FOCUS

Being the Bad Guys: How to Live For Jesus in a World That Says You Shouldn't

Stephen McAlpine In our post-Christian culture, how do we offer the gospel to those around us who view it as not only wrong but possibly dangerous? And how do we ensure that the secular worldview does not entice us away with its constant barrage, online and elsewhere, of messages about self-determinism? Author Stephen McAlpine offers an analysis of how our culture ended up this way and explains key points of tension between biblical Christianity and secular culture. He encourages Christians not to be ashamed of the gospel as it is more liberating, fulfilling and joyful than anything the world has to offer. Pb | 144 pgs | GOOD BOOK COMPANY

Faithful Leaders and the Things That Matter Most

Rico Tice There are many books on leadership strategies and church structures, but this one looks at what matters most: the character and attitude of church leaders. It recognises that the spiritual health of the church leaders in large part determines the spiritual health of the congregation and therefore the success of the ministry. In this short, punchy, challenging, and at times surprising book, Rico Tice draws on decades of experience in church leadership to call fellow pastors and others with oversight of areas of church ministry to define success biblically, fight their sin, lead themselves, and serve their churches. It will be a battle, but one worth fighting because personal holiness and godly leadership matter eternally. A must-read on pastoral leadership for pastors, elders, worship leaders, youth leaders, and anyone else with a leadership role in church ministry. Pb | 112 pgs | GOOD BOOK COMPANY

After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith without Losing It

A. J. Swoboda Award-winning author, pastor, and professor A. J. Swoboda has witnessed many young people wrestle with their core Christian beliefs. Too often, what begins as a set of critical and important questions turns to resentment and faith abandonment. Unfortunately, the church has largely ignored its task of serving people along their journey of questioning. The local church must walk alongside those who are deconstructing their faith and show them how to reconstruct it. Drawing on his own experience of deconstruction, Swoboda offers tools to help emerging adults navigate their faith in a hostile landscape.

Rowan Williams on Tales from Lindford

Join T&T Clark in celebrating a 200-year history of excellence and discover groundbreaking books by some of the most exciting voices in biblical studies, theology and ancient religion today. What Did Jesus Look Like?

Joan E. Taylor Jesus Christ is arguably the most famous man who ever lived. His image adorns countless churches, icons and paintings. He is the subject of millions of statues, sculptures, devotional objects and works of art. Everyone can conjure an image of Jesus: usually as a handsome, white man with flowing locks and linen robes. But what did Jesus really look like? Is our popular image of Jesus overly westernised and untrue to historical reality? Leading Christian origins scholar Joan E. Taylor surveys the historical evidence, and the prevalent image of Jesus in art and culture, to suggest an entirely different vision of this most famous of men. Hb | 288 pgs | T&T Clark

The Christian Doctrine of God

Thomas F. Torrance Written by one of the twentieth-century's foremost modern Trinitarian theologians, The Christian Doctrine of God remains a classic groundwork for scholars and students alike. Torrance adopts a holistic approach when examining the inter-relatedness of the three persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - and their dynamic Communion with the Being and Nature of God. Combining immense academic range with his characteristically fresh theological perspectives, Torrance builds a significant theological bridge between ancient and modern, as well as between the Roman and Protestant theology. Here Torrance conveys a simple message - the doctrine of the Trinity is the doctrine of God. Pb | 296 pgs | T&T Clark
