Image of the Invisible: Daily Bible readings from Advent to Epiphany

Amy Scott Robinson When you hear the name 'God', does an image come into your head? Do you think of him as a shining light, or with a human shape, or as an anchor in the storm, a rock, a fortress? As we look towards celebrating the incarnation at Christmas, we consider how God chose to express himself, in a moment in history, as a tiny baby. But what other images describe God in the Bible, and what can we learn about his character through them? How does an invisible God reveal himself to us in scripture and in Jesus? Amy Scott Robinson, a poet and storyteller, answers this question with imagination and a close reading of the text. Pb | 160 pgs | BRF

Freedom is Coming: From Advent to Epiphany with the Prophet Isaiah

Nick Baines 'Comfort, O comfort my people. . . In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord.' The second part of the book of Isaiah rings with proclamations and prophecies that find their fulfilment in the Gospels and are still being fulfilled by followers of Jesus today. In Freedom is Coming Nick Baines invites you to think about what it meant for people in Isaiah's day to be living in exile, and how the prophet encouraged them to keep their faith alive despite the apparent hopelessness of their situation. At the same time, this book helps you to see the connections between Isaiah's time and ours, and how his vision of God's truth and justice spreading throughout the world can comfort, challenge and inspire God's people now, just as it did back then. Read this book and find out how you too can become a 'light to the nations' as, once again, we approach the celebration of Christ's birth and the new world that God has promised to bring into being. Comings and Goings: Retracing the Christmas Story Through Place and Time

Gordon Giles Life involves many 'comings and goings', as we make our way along the path of faith day by day, guided by God's Holy Spirit. This book of readings for Advent and Christmas invites us to make a journey through time, from the end to the very beginning of all things. The daily reflections work backwards from the traditional Advent focus of the 'Four Last Things'death, judgement, heaven and hell - via Jesus' life, death and resurrection, to come at last to the incarnation and the events commemorated at Christmas itself. In the following days, the focus turns to Christ as the Word of God, present at the dawn of creation. Along the way, we 'visit' some of the actual Holy Land sites associated with Gospel events, drawing new insights from the familiar stories. Pb | 174 pgs | BRF

Prayer & Spirituality The White Stone: The Art of Letting Go

Esther De Waal Esther de Waal is one of today’s most beloved spiritual writers. In The White Stone, she reflects on the changes and losses that come with growing older. Esther reflects on solitude and, following a period of illness, saying goodbye to a family home and the Welsh border landscape she had known for decades which inspired some of her greatest writing, and adjusting to a new city environment. In her characteristic style, she sees everything as a portal into a deeper spiritual understanding. She draws on the wealth of the Christian tradition, especially scripture and the monastic and Celtic spiritualities she knows so well, to help her navigate her way through not only the inevitable sense of loss that accompanies such change, but also to embrace the new possibilities it brings. This is a book of simple, profound wisdom that will speak to many coping with change in their own lives. Pb | 126 pgs | CANTERBURY PRESS

Jesus taught his disciples to pray, and that model prayer can become the basis of our prayers too. We need to pray deeper, more fervent prayers. Or, as the Puritans used to say, we need to 'pray until we pray'. We should see prayer as a privilege, not a duty, and certainly not a burden. This devotional offers timeless wisdom and encouragement from Michael Baughen, Alistair Begg, Raymond Brown, David Coffey, Jonathan Lamb, Paul Mallard, Bruce Milne, Calisto Odede and Rico Tice. The Way of St Benedict

Rowan Williams With typical eloquence and wisdom, Rowan Williams explores the appeal of St Benedict's sixth-century Rule, showing it to be a document of great relevance to present-day Christians and nonbelievers. For over a millennium the Rule has been influential on the life of Benedictine monks, but has also served in some sense as a 'background note' to almost all areas of civic experience: artistic, intellectual and institutional. The effects of this on society have been far-reaching and Benedictine communities and houses still attract countless visitors, testifying to the appeal and continuing relevance of Benedict's principles. Theology Compel Them to Come In: Calvinism and the Free Offer of the Gospel

Donald Macleod If we believe in God's sovereign predestination, how can we offer Christ to sinners indiscriminately? How could someone who knew that no one can come to Christ unless the Father draws them still plead with them to look to the Saviour? The Bible clearly entreats us to go after the lost, so Donald Macleod tackles the objections raised by those who argue that since there is no universal redemption there should be no universal gospel offer. Reimagining Britain: Foundations for Hope

Justin Welby It is now three years since Justin Welby first published his Reimagining Britain. The fundamental message of that book remains as urgent as ever. But in this revised and expanded edition, Welby has taken fully into account the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Brexit and all the social and political unrest that has ensued. If anything, the new edition of Archbishop Welby's book is even more important than its predecessor. Here is a radical vision for 21st century Britain. The thesis of this book is that the work of reimagining is as great as it was in 1945, and will happen either by accident - and thus badly - or deliberately. Welby explores the areas in which values are translated into action, including the traditional three of recent history: health (especially public and mental), housing and education. 'Here Are Your Gods!': Faithful Discipleship in Idolatrous Times

The biblical story is filled with hope that the kingdom of God will ultimately triumph over all human empires. How then should we live as followers of Jesus, the Messiah, Saviour, Lord and King? Part One is adapted from chapter 5 of Wright’s The Mission of God, ‘The Living God Confronts Idolatry’. Making Faith Magnetic: Five Hidden Themes Our Culture Can’t Stop Talking About... and How to Connect Them to Christ

As followers of Jesus, we know that the good news is deeply attractive. But we often fear that to those on the outside, it comes across as irrelevant or even repellent. Sometimes the Christian worldview feels so out of step with everything else going on that we don’t know how to share our faith. However, author Daniel Strange wants to show you that the connections are there - in fact, the longings that our culture cannot help but express are the very ones that Jesus fulfils. Building on the work of theologian J.H. Bavinck, Dan reveals five recurring themes that our culture can’t stop talking about. From TV to books to social media, these are the questions we can’t stop asking and the tensions we can’t stop wrestling with - and Jesus speaks powerfully into each one. And Yet: Finding Joy in Lament

PRE-ORDER: Publishes 18th November

Rachael Newham In the depths of depression and plagued with suicidal thoughts, Rachael Newham never thought she’d find herself writing a book on joy. And yet, if her journey with mental health illness has taught her anything it is that true, deep, lasting joy can only be experienced when we allow ourselves to enter into lament and be honest about our pain before God. With warm understanding, Rachael traces how Biblical writers used ‘and yet’ to bring together joy and lament and invites us to see them not as opposites, but two sides of the same coin. Drawing on her experiences with mental illness, she shows us how we can build a rhythm of both joy and lament into our lives. Pb | 160 pgs | FORM

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World

John Mark Comer By outward metrics, everything appeared successful for John Mark. But inwardly, things weren't pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: 'Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.' It wasn't the response he expected, but it continues to be the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness as a root of much evil. Within the pages of this book, you'll find a compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favour of a slower, simpler way of life. Pb | 304 pgs | HODDER & STOUGHTON

Christian Life Renovation of the Heart: Putting on the Character of Christ, 20th Anniversary Edition

The year is divided up into monthly themes, ranging from New Beginnings, to treasuring the little things in life and the power of a smile. Charming line drawing illustrations decorate the page and journalling space allows the reader to respond to what they are reading by either making notes or with a drawing of their own. Blessings

For his 40th album, one of our most loved singers Aled Jones presents Blessings. An idea first incubated a few years ago, the album speaks to the senses we have all felt, as well as faith, spirituality, and most importantly creating a holistic album for all. Blessings touches on a range of faiths and beliefs through a range of uplifting hymns, texts and scriptures set to music Aled has also enlisted artists of a variety of religious and non-religious backgrounds to collaborate, including singer/songwriter and humanitarian Sami Yusuf, award-winning actress and author Dame Judi Dench, Britain’s Got Talent finalist Susan Boyle, 94-year-old D-Day veteran Harry Billinge MBE, boy chorists Libera and biggest-selling Catholic artists The Priests. At the heart of the album is Aled’s firm belief that peace, love and kindness are at the core of all faiths - these are the values that bind us together and come to us in times of need. 14 track CD | BMG RIGHTS

Sharing the Easter Story: From Reading to Living the Gospel

Sally Welch In this year’s BRF Lent book Sally Welch explores two questions: What is the Easter story really about, and how do we share it? Through each week of Lent, a different aspect of the Easter story is examined: repenting, changing, hoping, trusting, forgiving, loving and sacrificing. Within each week, the days are focused on what we need to do in order to share the story: listening, understanding, reflecting, living, telling, sharing and becoming. Each day offers a Bible passage, followed by a reflection and prayer activity. Pb | 208 pgs | BRF

Patti Callahan Megs Devonshire is brilliant with numbers and equations, on a scholarship at Oxford, and dreams of solving the greatest mysteries of physics. She prefers the dependability of facts - except for one: the younger brother she loves with all her heart doesn't have long to live. When George becomes captivated by a copy of a brand-new book called The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and begs her to find out where Narnia came from, there's no way she can refuse. Despite her timidity about approaching the famous author, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with the Oxford don and his own brother, imploring them for answers. What she receives instead are more stories . . . stories of Jack Lewis's life, which she takes home to George. Why won't Mr. Lewis just tell her plainly what George wants to know? The answer will reveal to Meg many truths that science and maths cannot, and the gift she thought she was giving to her brother - the story behind Narnia - turns out to be his gift to her, instead: hope.

Pam Rhodes The march towards the end of the year sees Hope Hall once again buzzing with activity. The lead up to the Harvest Festival sees a stray dog causing a nuisance, and tensions rise between two old schoolmates. The drama only increases as Christmas approaches, and the panto rehearsals featuring the jocular ‘Can’t Sing Singers’ get into full swing. But the hustle and bustle of the drama in the community stems from the deeper personal stories. Loneliness, loss and hurt impact the lives of many of the local residents. But where there is community, there is friendship, companionship, love and, most of all, hope.

If These Stones Could Talk: The History of Christianity in Britain and Ireland Through Twenty Buildings

Peter Stanford Christianity has been central to the lives of the people of Britain and Ireland for almost 2,000 years. It has given us laws, customs, traditions and our national character. From a persecuted minority in Roman Britannia through the ‘golden age’ of Anglo-Saxon monasticism, the devastating impact of the Vikings, the alliance of church and state after the Norman Conquest to the turmoil of the Reformation that saw the English monarch replace the Pope and the Puritan Commonwealth that replaced the king, it is a tangled, tumultuous story of faith and achievement, division and bloodshed.

‘There is no better navigator through the space in which art, culture and spirituality meet than Peter Stanford’ Cole Moreton, Independent on Sunday

In If These Stones Could Talk Peter Stanford journeys through England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland to churches, abbeys, chapels and cathedrals, grand and humble, ruined and thriving, ancient and modern, to chronicle how a religion that began in the Middle East came to define our past and shape our present. In exploring the stories of these buildings that are still so much a part of the landscape, the details of their design, the treasured objects that are housed within them, the people who once stood in their pulpits and those who sat in their pews, he builds century by century the narrative of what Christianity has meant to the nations of the British Isles, how it is reflected in the relationship between rulers and ruled, and the sense it gives about who we are and how we live with each other. Europe’s 100 Best Cathedrals

Simon Jenkins Europe’s cathedrals are magnificent. They outstrip palaces and castles. They are the most sensational group of structures anywhere in the world which everyone should ‘see before they die’. They are also hugely popular, most of them absolutely packed. They are humankind’s greatest creations. In Europe’s 100 Best Cathedrals, Simon Jenkins has travelled the continent - from Chartres to York, Cologne to Florence, Toledo to Moscow and Stockholm to Seville - to illuminate old favourites and highlight new discoveries. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs throughout, this joyous exploration of Europe’s history tells the stories behind these wonders, showing the cathedral’s central role in the European imagination. Readers will be inspired to make their own pilgrimage to all one hundred of them. Hb | 360 pgs | VIKING

A Field Guide to the English Clergy: A Compendium of Diverse Eccentrics, Pirates, Prelates and Adventurers; All Anglican, Some Even Practising

Revd Fergus Butler-Gallie The ‘Mermaid of Morwenstow’ excommunicated a cat for mousing on a Sunday. When he was late for a service, Bishop Lancelot Fleming commandeered a Navy helicopter. ‘Mad Jack’ swapped his surplice for leopard skin and insisted on being carried around in a coffin. And then there was the man who, like Noah’s evil twin, tried to eat one of each of God’s creatures… In spite of all this they saw the church as their true calling. These portraits reveal the Anglican church in all its colourful madness. Pb | 208 pgs | ONEWORLD PUBLICATIONS
