hand-made 'singgora' clay tiles

The retreat house (370 sq.metres) is sited on a 20 acres of land at Kampong Janda Baik .A leisure drive of 40 minutes from the city will bring you to the site located in lush greenery of undulating scenic hill. It is intended to be used as a family retreat and a meeting place with friends. The house is located on elevated ground at far end corner of the land with views towards the lake and river. The space comprises of a dining wakaf unit, living/bedroom unit, internal & outdoor bath, kitchen and a dip-pool Jacuzzi in between the two main space. These main spaces are linked with timber trellis mounted on a pergola walkway. Additional loft spaces for sleeping are also located above the main units. The house was constructed of chengal timber and load bearing brick wall at the kitchen and bath areas while the RC floor slab is supported by brickwork strip footing. Traditionally handmade clay tiles (singgora tiles) are used as the roof covering as it response well to the climate, rustic in nature and are lightweight.

a design for ambience, cultural and harmony

concepts:

The beauty of the site is both obvious and subtle. The challenge was how to incorporate the clients program and physical spaces into the natural forest landscape. An elevated and modulated spaces will help in the integration of the units. The humble structure on elevated ground offers excellent view. The choice of materials and construction method is prime importance in deciding the architectural direction and language.

The concept of differentiation between city living and village is given emphasis whereby leisure & slow pace life takes precedence. A spirit of a place; sound of flowing river, floral & fauna and living habitat, cool-climate and the village setting is explored to bring an ambience to the surrounding area. The spaces are modulated to fit into the site context and hence enhancing the integration of the landscape and building. The natural landscape will flow and grow and be part of the spaces. Similar type of landscape plants and trees usage at site will be coordinated to make better connections between the rustic building materials and spaces thus will put the architecture in the backdrop of beautiful landscape. The transparency of spaces will create a closer link to the beauty of the site.
