International Festival of Street Games


The game is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

On 17th of October 2003 the General Conference of UNESCO approved in Paris the Conven&on for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ar&cle 2).

The concept

Toca% -­‐ Interna-onal Fes-val of Street Games comes from the idea to give value to tradi&onal games coming from Italy and abroad.

The Fes-val has reached, in 2014, its 12th edi-on confirming 300,000 a@endees.

It is conceived and promoted by the Associazione Giochi An&chi in collabora-on with the Municipality of Verona – Cultural dept. and ETSGA – European Tradi-onal Sports and Games Associa-on.

The PROMOTERs

The European Tradi&onal Sports and Games Associa&on (ETSGA) is formed by sports or cultural federa-ons, associa-ons, and educa-onal ins-tu-ons working in the management, promo&on and preserva&on of tradi&onal sports and games. Associazione Giochi An-chi is member of ETSGA since 2007 and takes an ac-ve part in mee&ngs and events organized by the other member organiza-ons.

Associazione Giochi An-chi is a cultural p r o j e c t f o c u s i n g o n g a m e s , communi-es and their territory. The Associa-on is interested in tradi&onal games, passed down for centuries as part of a na&on’s culture.

The Fes&val covers a surface area of around 220,000 m2

A city that plays

TocaR takes place every year in September in the historical city centre of Verona. The fes-val promotes tradi-onal game while encouraging the valoriza&on of public spaces. Streets and squares of the historical city centre are, for the occasion, free from parked cars and traffic.

Heart of the Fes-val are Tradi&onal Game Communi&es, which through the game, keep alive the historic memory, the cultural iden&ty, the environmental peculiari-es and the social crea-vity of their territory.

Game communi-es s-ll survive in small towns and villages outside the large urban areas, playing by unwri@en rules and building their gaming tools with tradi-onal methods and local materials.

The Festival safeguards the intangible cultural heritage At international, national and local level

Each edi-on has a guest of honour country and its protagonists are groups of players whom knowledge and tradi&ons represent a huge heritage. The guest country intrigues and involves the fes-val audience through its games, rituals, music and dances, as part of its own Intangible Culture Heritage.

1° ITSGA CONgress

In 2011, Toca% hosted the 1° ITSGA congress. ITSGA (Interna&onal Tradi&onal Sports and Games Associa&on) is formed by con-nental organiza-ons working on the promo&on, safeguarding, and management of tradi&onal sports and games.

The Auditorium hosts the protagonists of the game world: scholars, players, museums, cultural operators and experts of the game sector.

INVITATION

Toca% has been presented at the Sapienza University in Rome during the seminar on educa-on and cultural heritage. The -tle of the mee-ng was Toca% as a game community and a tool for network-­‐ building. The seminar was promoted by SIMBDEA -­‐ Società Italiana per la Museografia e i Beni Demo-­‐Etno-­‐Antropologici.

Thanks to the collabora-on with different departments, staff and students involved in different long-­‐term projects, the Fes-val Toca% has strengthened strong rela-ons in the territory .

Nomination

Cultural Capital Counts is a European project promoted by the Verona Chamber of Commerce – Verona Innovazione. The goal is to promote the regional development, focusing on intangible resources such as tradi&ons, social and ar&s&c rou&nes, knowledge and talents.

The Fes&val TocaR has been acknowledged as unique effort in promo&ng the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The QR codes printed on panels located in the games’ areas allow access through mobile phone or smartphone, to videos showing games in their original context.

During the fes-val, the audience can discover tradi&onal music, songs and dances. Toca% offers a selec-on of the ethno-­‐musical heritages from the guest countries and the various Italian regions.
