Preface
D EM
O
Ever since the dawn of civilization, language has played a vital role in the making of the society and its breeds. It evolved many means of improvisation in the standard of life and the way thereof. When the primary appetites of man namely -physical, sexual and sensual have been fulfilled, the next instinct namely psychological or mental, which led to the philosophy of thinking of ideology was born. Then emerged the symbol and thereafter the sound, leading to expression, language and literature. People in different parts of the world have recognised the influence of the improvement on the mental and physical health of human beings. Once this factor gained recognition, efforts were made to create proper environment for people to enable them to lead healthy and happy lives. Various sages and saints in India always wanted to ensure this happiness and prosperity to mankind. They showed serious concern about the happiness and welfare of everyone, with a view to ensure that people live in peace, harmony, prosperity, comfort and happiness. They evolved various codes and systems which led to the comforts of life and these are contained in ancient scriptures like Vedas, Upanishads etc. Vaastu shastra is not a religion but a science. The philosophy and concept of Vaastu shastra has more to do with complex mathematical calculations alongwith the energy lines of the earth. This science does not encourage blind faith. Instead effective creation of energy and positive vibration, flow of balance and harmony are required to make Vaastu work in one's life. Before discussing more about Vaastu shastra, one has to be aware of Nature and its five elements namely : Sky, Air, Fire,

Earth and Water. The science of Vaastu is effected with positive power of three elements: The Earth, The water, The Fire. Sun is the source of immense Energy and heat generation. Due to the great distance of Earth from the Sun, the Earth receives only a fraction of the heat generated by Sun and the same is sufficient for the existence of living organisms on the Earth, while this concept gave birth to the science of Vaastu in India, the same concept led to the birth of Feng Shui in China. Vaastu has gained a great importance because it is result oriented and experience based science. It changes our cosmic path leading to success, stability and sense. It deals with natural forces and changes one's relationship with them. It builds a beautiful bridge between inner spaces and outer spaces. It transforms voids into spaces which are wombs of creation, care and comfort. It defines one's path effortlessly and subtracts natural hindrance and blockage. It creates a positive relationship between microcosm i.e. individual and macrocosm i.e. outer world. Little rectification in personal holistic alignment on the cosmic reference changes the goal, destiny and end. Since it is holistic in nature, it affects at three levels of individual viz. Physical, Psychological and Spiritual which are the basic dimensions of human existence. Vaastu shastra is a science of higher dimension. The concepts therein are based on practical observations, research and development spanning over hundreds of years & are not derivatives of any speculative teleology. Vaastu shastra effectively manipulates the web of cosmic energy for the betterment of mankind. Its well defined rules and regulations ensure the houses, abodes, dwellings, buildings and structures in general are in harmony with the surrounding environment and the entire universe. The dwelling subscribing to Vaastu shastra are always governed by the philosophy of environment friendly simple dwellings with simple shapes. While modern architecture specialises in bodily comforts of a dweller and functional effectiveness of a structure, Vaastu aims at ensuring the health, happiness,

prosperity and well being of the human being occupying the dwelling and endows him with a sustained peace and tranquility of mind. Human life is full of events, both good and bad. However, if the mind functions with equanimity between intellect and nature, then the eternal peace and happiness experienced by the person will not let such good and bad happenings disturb his equilibrium. The whole book has been divided into Eighteen Chapters each dealing with one specific area of house or building with minute details. I have tried my best to discuss each and every detail of the Residential Vaastu in these two volumes. Hope the readers will benefit a lot from these books. However one thing I must make it clear to the readers that these two volumes are solely dedicated to the Residential Vaastu and it does not include the specific phenomena meant to be taken into account for the Commercial Vaastu. For Commercial Vaastu, another book named Comprehensive Commercial Vaastu will be in the market soon. I hope you will benefit a lot from these books and help yourselves in bringing about peace, happiness and prosperity for yourself and the society and thus contribute significantly in ameliorating the lot of the country as a whole. Main Entrance Door The main door is the passage which creates life in a home. One should pay great attention to the main door and the main windows as per the Vaastu. There are various aspects like the placement of the main door, the placement of the main windows, the direction of the main door and so on. A person enters the home through the main door and hence the main door should produce positive energy each time a person walks in. This positive energy from the main door is correlated to the entire portion of the home. An entrance door should be positioned in a way where it can activate the most beneficial energy.
Following are some tips which can help you position your main entrance door as per the norms of Vaastu.:One can place the main door on a fixed auspicious day after performing a Vaastu Puja. The location of the main door plays an important role as you need to figure out on which place can be apt to place the main door. You can do this

by standing in front of your home and imaginarily dividing your home into two parts where the door can be placed towards the centre. It can be either in the left or the right half based on the direction of the door.
Position of Main Door According to Vaastu Chakra The main entrance should be located in the auspicious grid position. The site of building is divided in a 9x9 grid called the Paramshayika Mandala. Placement of main door is determined by the presence of different deities having loardship of different parts of the site. The correct placement of main entrance in different direction have been shown in figure.

Guidelines for the main door • The main door should never be made on the extended or reduced part of the plot.
O
• The main door should be larger than the other doors of the house.
D EM
• It should always be kept neat, clean and attractive. • It should have two planks. If all the doors of the house cannot be of two planks then atleast the main door, and the doors of the master bedroom and the pooja room should be of two planks. • The planks of the door should open inwards. If the main door opens towards outside then there will be endless troubles. The children will become obstinate and there will be no peace in the house. • Auspicious signs like swastika, bells, conch, cowries, and pictures of goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati and Ganeshji should be decorated on the main door. • The door should not be touching the wall. There should be a distance of 4” to 1’ between the wall and the frame of the door. • The door should be atleast one foot higher than an average man’s height. The normal principle is that the height of the door should be twice the breadth, but care should be taken that the breadth is atleast three and half to four feet.

Boundary is necessary It is absolutely necessary to make a boundary around a residential or a professional establishment. The boundary not only protects the residents but also protects them from Vaastudosha. Southern and Western part of the boundary should be thicker than the Northern and Eastern part. Apart from this for keeping the boundary in harmony with the main door the following rules should be kept in mind. 1. For an East facing house, it is auspicious to have a door or gate in the boundary wall in front of the main door. To make it more effective, another door can be made in the Eastern Ishan part of the boundary which is located in front of the open space left in the North of the house. 2. For a South facing house, the main door should be made in the Southern Agneya in front of the open space left towards the East. Even if a door is already made in front of the main entrance of the house, a second door in the Southern Agneya is essential. 3. If a house is made in the centre of the plot and in the centre of the boundary, then the main door can be in any direction and it will not produce Vaastu dosha. In such a case it is not necessary to have a second door in the boundary in the better section of the plot. 4. For a West facing house, if there is a door in the boundary in front of the main door of the house, then a second door should be made in the boundary in the Western Vayavya in front of the open space left towards the North of the house. Without this, the first door will remain inauspicious. 5. For a North facing house, if there is a door in the boundary in front of the main door, then a second door should be made in the boundary in the Northern Ishan. Without this the first door will give not be effective. 6. The door made in the better portion of the boundary must be used. It will good results. 7. For a North facing or East facing house the boundary can be of the same height as the main door or can be even lower.

8. If the boundary gets damaged in Southern or Western Nairritya or in Eastern Agneya or in Northern Vayavya, then it should be repaired immediately to prevent inauspicious Vaastu results. 9. Only one door in the boundary is troublesome. 10. If the boundary door is higher and thicker in the South and West then it confers good health and wealth. 11. If the door in Nairritya of the boundary is high, then it confers wealth, honour and happiness. 12. There should be some distance between the house and the boundary wall. 13. Within the boundary, more open space should be left towards North and East as compared to the space left in South and West. If the plot is excessively large then Goddess Laxmi does not reside in it, this causes financial constraints. Normally the open area should not be more than four times than that of the covered area. In an average house the covered area is between 1500 to 2000 sq. ft. Accordingly the open area should not be more than 8000 to 10000 sq ft. After becoming successful financially, the people who make houses in very huge plots leaving more than four times the covered area as open space, have to face the day when their success story becomes a glory of the past. In many huge plots, very huge gardens are made apart from the house. This becomes inauspicious. If a garden has to be made then a wall should be constructed between the house and the garden and a door should be made in that wall. A garden should be made in the plot only when the shape of the plot is normal. If a huge garden is to be made then it should be separate from the house. The entry door into the garden can be from outside. If the garden and house need to be connected then the door should be kept in North or East. This is possible only if the garden is in the North or East. If the garden is towards South or West then its door should be from outside. Garden in a plot is not inauspicious unless it is disproportionately large. Normally in towns and cities the gardens are small and they are not inauspicious.

Door position according to the directions North: The door should be in the left half when facing the house. Avoid placing the door in the right half (North-West). Placing the door in this direction will allow ample amount of sunlight throughout the day. The door should be placed in the centre of the wall and the windows should be kept in the Northeast. Avoid placing the door near the corner of the walls.
D EM
O
West: The door can be placed in the left half, facing the house. Avoid positioning the door in the right half of the house as more windows are supposed to be positioned here for a constant sunlight throughout the day. Avoid the opening in the South, West direction. If you have a door in the West ensure that you have a parallel door in the East which can allow maximum useful Ultraviolet rays.

South: A door positioned in the South should n’t be placed in the centre of the building and should be placed in the right half of the home. Avoid placing the main door in the Southwest SW) direction as this might harm you with the hot infrared rays.
O
East: The door can be placed in the right half facing towards the North, East direction. Avoid positioning the door in the Southeast direction. The door should be placed in the centre of the wall and the windows should be placed in the Northeast direction.

Also it is considered as an inconvenience to the guests.
D EM
Do not have an underground tank, septic tank under the Main Entrance Door: This is because if the tank has to be opened and cleaned, it will be very inconvenient if it has to be done right in front of the main door.
Do not have the Main Entrance Door in the corners of the home: It is advisable that you do not have the main entrance door in the corners of the home as this can result in a difficulty while placing furniture at home. Corners in a home should be left vacant for movement.

Do not have a wall in front of the entrance door: Do not have a wall directly in front of the entrance door and instead have a door which opens in the next room. Doing this will allow the fresh air inside the home making it well ventilated. Have an entrance and an exit door: The Vaastu principles suggest that there should be two doors; one for entry and another one for exit. The exit door should be smaller than the entrance door. This will let the fresh air enter in the home. Points to be remembered:
O
• Have the main entrance door as the largest door in your home.
D EM

Doors and windows are essential furnishing articles of the house and make living a pleasurable experience. Doors and windows not only act as a passage through which air enters the house, but also as a gateway for energies. A window in the wrong direction would let in negative energies in the house. However, a window in the right direction would allow positive energies and increase the prosperity and affluence of the people staying inside. While, today, people are mostly concerned about the designing done on the doors and windows, it’s the direction and placement which should be a matter of botheration. The direction of the doors and the windows is an important consideration to make. Ideally, a house with maximum number of doors and windows opening in North and East sides, rather than South and West of the building is considered auspicious.

37 ::: Doors, Windows & Staircase
• The main door of the house should be bigger in size as compared to the other doors in the house. Also, it should be more beautiful than others. • Preferably, doors of all the rooms should be of the same size. However, if you want one of them to be bigger, then doors in South and West side should be the one. Make sure not to make the North and the East side doors bigger than the rest. • A house should have even numbers of doors and windows.
O
• At the time of fixing the doorframe in an internal wall, make sure that the doorframe is not fixed contiguous to the main wall of the house. There should be a minimum of 4” pad built, before fixing the doorframe to a lateral wall.
D EM
• Take care of the cross ventilation at the time of fixing the doors and windows. Teak serves as the best option for doors and windows. • Irregular shaped doors and windows are a strict no-no, as they are deemed inauspicious. Ideally, the door size should be in ratio of 2:1 in respect to height and width, its normal size being 7’ X 3’. • For the windows, though the sizes of width may differ, they should have symmetry in height.
