Thanks to our loyal donors and patrons as well as two seasons of very strong ticket sales, we are closer than ever to adding restrooms and elevators to ASU Gammage. We are now less than $500,000 from being able to break ground on this project and are planning to submit the project for final approval at the June meeting of the Arizona Board of Regents.
“Thank you for being a vital part of our success and helping us with this effort.”
We are still looking for visionary business leaders and individuals to help us complete this funding to make this project a reality. The project will cost $9.2 million to add the 70 additional restrooms and 2 elevators. All gifts are being matched by ASU for a limited time. The addition of two new elevators will dramatically improve access for all people who come to ASU Gammage by allowing patrons to travel to every level of the theater without having to use stairs and the restroom additions will alleviate the frustrations of long lines that have been a growing problem at ASU Gammage for years. The project’s construction will take eight months to complete, meaning that new restrooms could be less than a season away with your support. The project’s design ensures that the facility can remain open and fully operational during construction, so that we can continue to deliver the magic and wonder that only live performance can bring. Thank you for being a vital part of our success and helping us with this effort. If you have the ability, please consider making an additional gift to ensure that we break ground in June.

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL 2016-2017 BROADWAY SEASON
ASU GAMMAGE ANNOUNCES ITS 2016-2017 BROADWAY SEASON • By Theresa Dickerson This fall, ASU Gammage will kick off its most ‘beautiful’ Broadway season to date. BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL and CABARET are among the 10 musicals performing during the 2016-2017 season. Additionally, due to popular demand, THE BOOK OF MORMON will return next spring! CABARET SEPTEMBER 13-18, 2016 Direct from Broadway, the acclaimed masterpiece returns to ASU Gammage! The critically acclaimed and award-winning Roundabout Theatre Company is proud to present Sam Mendes (“Skyfall,” “American Beauty”) and Rob Marshall’s (“Into the Woods” and “Chicago,” the films) Tony Award®-winning production of CABARET. Welcome to the infamous Kit Kat Klub, where the Emcee, Sally Bowles and a raucous ensemble take the stage nightly to tantalize the crowd––and to leave their troubles outside. But as life in pre-WWII Germany grows more and more uncertain, will the decadent allure of Berlin nightlife be enough to get them through the dangerous times? Come hear some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.” Leave your troubles outside – life is beautiful at 4

But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice. THE ASU GAMMAGE FAMILY WAY •
By Jennifer Haaland
The 2016–17 Season Announce last month honored even greater accomplishments than the 10 fabulous shows that the upcoming Desert Schools Broadway Across America season promises. Like so many proud family milestones, the second annual Gammy and Jerry Awards were celebrated with less glitzy public fanfare but seemed more deeply representative of what beats at the heart of ASU Gammage. The honorees themselves, as well as those bestowing the awards, glowed with humble gratitude grounded in respect for the transformative power of live art. The still young tradition of the Gammy and Jerry Awards, according to Senior Director of Development for Arts & Design at ASU, Peter Means, places ASU Gammage within the cultural fabric of our local communities. These awards celebrate the important symbiotic role that ASU Gammage plays in keeping our nation's performing arts and artists strong. This year, wrapped into that artistic fabric for future generations, were the famous Cerveris family and the adored Ways, Bill and Mary, honored with the 2016 Gammy Award and 2016 Jerry Award, respectively. “I take such pride in our little troupe of family players, these three standing behind me,” said patriarch Dr. Michael Edward Cerveris, who founded the Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance Department at ASU West, which has grown into the ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. With the handsomely etched crystal award atop the podium before him, the talented concert pianist and professor articulated his view on producing art of excellence. “Partly owing to my own shameless disregard of child labor laws,” said the proud dad to chuckles during a lovely catered 8

dinner outside on the ASU Gammage Promenade, “when they look back on doing performances here in Arizona and at ASU Gammage, the exposure they gained to creativity and optimism about art at ASU continues to inform their work. They've each personalized the life lesson that while public recognition is fine and appreciated, the greater service is a commitment to do good work.” Todd Cerveris has been an integral part of the ASU Gammage arts family through his recent starring roles in affecting theatre tours such as 12 ANGRY MEN (2008) and SPRING AWAKENING (2011), as has Marisa Cerveris, who has danced prominent ballet roles on our stage and with Ballet Arizona during the course of her career that also included European companies and the New York City Ballet. “I was the Sugarplum melting in the heat on the ASU Gammage stage,” joked Marisa Cerveris with friendly ease about one of her starring roles here. Currently teaching private students on the East Coast and marketing her own couture dancewear line, she added to the evening's cozy feel by remarking about friends who had come from Los Angeles

to celebrate her family's award. “After they sat through tonight's Announcement program they said, ‘I don't know why we would need to go all the way to New York. With this kind of season and the first run shows they get here, ASU Gammage would be a great place to come instead.’” Also feeling a sense of family, Michael Ernest Cerveris, the two time Tony Award®-winning Best Actor, currently performing in FUN HOME still playing on Broadway, reflected on his Arizona days. At the backstage reception following the 2016-17 Broadway Season Announce, he recalled visiting his dad on ASU's campus at 26, “It was a cinder block classroom and could have been anywhere. But it was here; it was home. And to see the wonder and amazement of dad bringing New York and even bigger more global talent here and how it changed the world of those students has always stayed with me.” Before turning her gratitude toward Jerry Award recipients Bill and Mary Way, ASU Gammage Executive Director Colleen Jennings-Roggensack offered a closing message to the Cerveris family like her heart was whispering to a favorite uncle and cousins. Singling them out individually she remarked, “... each of you serves as an inspiration to all who have a story to tell, a song to sing, a score to play, a dance to perform, and a dream to achieve. I thank you for your excellence, your advocacy for the arts and most of all for your friendship. Your indelible impact on the arts will stand the test of time. It is an honor to have all of you with us tonight.” The kinship fused more solidly as the evening developed and Jennings-Roggensack shared that the Jerry Award is named for the late Jerry Appell who “set the gold standard of dedication to ASU Gammage” following with numerous creative examples that so too, “the heart of ASU Gammage would not be the same without Mary and Bill Way.” As the couple accepted the trophy, Mary's words rose to honor the award's namesake and her dear friend. Reminiscing about how Appell had first learned the art of telling his own story
she said, “From the seeds of refugees sprung a producer of Broadway plays. Jerry's ASU Gammage story is the story of the circle of life.” “We miss you like mad,” she ended through a sparkle of tears with husband Bill at her side. As she cast her gaze toward the sunset view on the ASU Gammage Promenade, the crowd leapt to an immediate rousing ovation. Mary Way described with soft-spoken eloquence after the dinner how ASU Gammage's impact is greater than the breathtaking Broadway shows in her estimation. “They have a massive outreach that touches those most in need. Thousands upon thousands of students. The ladies incarcerated at Estrella Jail. Every. Year. ...And they ensure that new art continues to be produced. I don't know of another entity that provides the seed money, that commissions new works, with the kind of consistency or huge scale that ASU Gammage does.” Later, ASU Gammage 50th Anniversary Leadership Board Member Laurie Goldstein, speaking of growing and strengthening the ASU Gammage family, remarked about her personal admiration for the Ways. Citing Mary as the driving force behind creative fundraising—like the Landmark Luncheons she invented—Goldstein said, “The immediate need is to make ASU Gammage itself more accessible so that art is more accessible, and Mary is making sure it will happen.” Perhaps unexpected, but not surprising, Michael Cerveris (fils) remarked toward the evening's end, “My other take-home memory will be of the Ways. Their connection to this place and to each other, to the Appells... It's a true family story here.” Mary Way's maternal nature enfolded the entire Arizona community into her when she shared a concluding gem, almost as an afterthought. Referring to the many souls touched by ASU Gammage, Way said with a peaceful sigh, “What we have created here is a public temple. You can feel it, and it fills a deep need. It's a place where humanity and spirituality linger.” l Jennifer Haaland VOLUME 10 | 2016

VIOLA DAVIS RECEIVES THE ASU GAMMAGE COURAGE AWARD On February 28, Emmy-Award®winner Viola Davis received the firstever ASU Gammage Courage Award. The Courage Award celebrates an individual in the arts who goes above and beyond for what they believe in. Davis has won two Tony Awards®, a 2015 Emmy Award® and is an advocate for equality in the entertainment industry. “Viola Davis is one of the most gifted actors in the world today,” said Victor Hamburger, the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications for ASU Gammage. “With her background on Broadway as well as her advocacy for opening doors to more diversity, we felt that there was no better person to honor.”
Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, Viola Davis & her husband, Julius Tennon
Davis spoke at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church as a part of ASU’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy’s initiative to raise awareness about race and democracy in today’s society. About 3,000 people attended and over 500 people watched a live-stream of the event from another building. The Pilgrim Rest Gospel Choir performed and ASU President Michael Crow gave a speech about how Davis exemplifies inclusion and access. “She (Viola Davis) is a tremendous advocate for democracy,” said Crow. “We have to reconceptualize democracy, reconceptualize education to drive down barriers and defeat ignorance.” Davis discussed her 2015 Emmy Award® speech in which she attributed the lack of diversity among the award-winners and nominees to a lack of opportunities for people of color in the film and television industry. “Ms. Davis is being honored for her tireless work and commitment in championing diversity and inclusion in the arts,” said ASU Gammage executive director Colleen Jennings-Roggensack. “She has been an incredible role model for people from all walks of life because of her profound courage to not accept the status quo and to let her talent and grace shine.” Davis also spoke about her childhood experience with “abject poverty.” Davis grew up in a poor community in Rhode Island and often did not know when or where her next meal would come from. Luckily, Davis said the Upward Bound program made it possible for her to attend a university and provide for herself and her family. “That’s the beauty of living in America, because anywhere else, I would have remained a child of poverty,” said Davis. In order to increase diversity in Hollywood, Davis and her husband created JuVee, a production company specifically tailored to providing diverse, dynamic scripts for people of color. Currently, the company is in the process of producing a biopic about former Texas senator and Civil Rights movement leader, Barbara Jordan. “People put up so many barriers to your potential, but that’s not the worst part. The worst part is when you start believing them,” said Davis. Today, Davis can be seen on ABC’s drama, “How To Get Away With Murder.” She previously starred in movies such as “The Help” and Broadway plays like KING HEDLEY II. l Savanah Yaghsezian • savanah.yaghsezian@asu.edu Colleen Jennings-Roggensack and Kim Covington

ASU GAMMAGE PLAY WILL EMPOWER PEOPLE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM ASU will get a chance to see the play THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME when it comes to ASU Gammage. ASU Gammage announced its lineup of for the 2016-17 theater season, and among the multitude of upcoming shows is the stage adaptation of a book that is immensely meaningful to me—“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” If any item from the following list applies to you, you owe it to yourself to experience “Curious Incident,” in either novel or play form. 1. You like the BBC series “Sherlock” 2. You like animals more than you like people 3. You like the book “An Abundance of Katherines” 4. You know someone who is on the autism spectrum (which is extremely likely because about 1 in 68 individuals are) Although the dead tree incarnation of “Curious Incident” has been in stores since 2003, I hadn’t heard of it until January of this year. This is how I found out about it: My main goal in life is to someday be a professional fiction writer. At the start of this semester, one of my English teachers asked me what kinds of stories I like to write, so I explained to her that most of my work is heavily influenced by the fact that I have an autism spectrum disorder (I usually avoid calling myself “autistic” because I'm diagnosed with what used to be called Asperger's syndrome. I don't think it would be fair for me to liken my own experiences with those of people who deal with more challenging forms of autism). I told her that I try to write from the perspectives of characters who

see the world a little bit differently from how most people see it, and that I hope doing so will help people empathize with individuals who don't operate quite like most people. My teacher then recommended that I read “Curious Incident,” saying it's about an autistic boy, and that it was written with a similar goal in mind. So I bought the book and devoured it within a 24-hour period. It was excellent, but not for reasons I anticipated. I expected it to be filled with little scenes that illustrate what it’s like to be an autistic person. And it was, but that wasn’t the most valuable component of the book. At least the way I read it, Christopher (the protagonist), while profoundly gifted in some areas, had no chance at achieving the things he set out to do until he was provided with the support and guidance he needed. It was only when the adults in Christopher’s life came through for him that he was able to reach his full potential. “Curious Incident” has made me acutely aware of the fact that, had I not been fortunate enough to have grown up with fantastic parents and grandparents, my life easily could have spiraled out of control into an absolute mess. I sincerely hope that people who have the opportunity to see THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME at ASU Gammage next summer will take the story’s message to heart and realize that they have the ability to have a positive impact on the lives of others. l Cody Fitzpatrick • cmfitzpa@asu.edu Reprinted from The State Press

More than 50 military couples experienced a date night at ASU Gammage that included tickets to 42ND STREET, dinner at a local restaurant, an intermission reception and a goodie bag with show merchandise and other surprises all at no cost to them. The mission of the program is to allow the military and their dates a special night away from their dayto-day stresses and enjoy time together to relax and reconnect. Operation Date Night participant and retired Marine Ray Cook shared his experience with this year’s Operation Date Night. “First and foremost, thank you to ASU Gammage for a wonderful evening. I was in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam off and on from 1964 to 1967. When I returned home from Vietnam, we were treated like second-class citizens. They were not very pretty times for many soldiers. The reason I wanted you to know, is how your kindness touches my heart. Operation Date Night 2016 was SPECTACULAR. We had an incredible meal at P.F. Chang’s. The show at ASU Gammage— 42ND STREET—was amazing. It was as if you were in New York on Broadway. The music, costumes, singing, dancing, acting were true perfection. My wife and I were in 7th heaven. So this evening was not only beautiful but healing as well. We really can’t thank all of you enough.” “Operation Date Night is a very special evening that we are honored to provide to these amazing military couples. We can never say thank you enough for the sacrifices these couples have made,” said Victor Hamburger, ASU Gammage Senior Director of Marketing and Communications. Operation Date Night is part of the ASU Gammage Salute supporting military programs, which include the Military Ticket Fund, Military Family First Night and Heroes Night. The ASU Gammage Salute allows for our nation’s heroes and their families to see the best of Broadway each season.

With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler and musical direction and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, HAMILTON is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. THE ASU GAMMAGE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL AWARDS ARE BACK IN MAY A blinding golden light slides across the stage and settles upon a young girl staring wide-eyed into the shadowed audience. She takes a shaky deep breath and begins to sing in perfect harmony with the ensemble behind her. For now, she’s only able to perform on her high school’s stage, but she hopes one day she’ll be belting it out on Broadway. ASU Gammage has a wonderful opportunity to help high schoolers get one step closer to fulfilling their Broadway dreams right here on our stage. The High School Musical Theater Awards is a powerful, Tony Award®inspired program that showcases the talent of 17 participating high schools. On May 21, ASU Gammage will host its 2nd Annual ASU Gammage High School Musical Theater Awards. The event will feature musical numbers from 9 to 5, ALL SHOOK UP, BIG FISH, CHESS, FOOTLOOSE, FRANKENSTEIN: A NEW MUSICAL, GODSPELL, GREASE, HAIRSPRAY, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, MEET ME IN ST. Winners for the event were selected based on their scores. At the event, the winners will be announced for the following categories: Best Overall Performance, Best Lead
Male, Best Lead Female, Outstanding Supporting Performance Male and Female, Best Dancer, Best Vocalist and Outstanding Technical Achievement. Two graduating seniors will be awarded the ASU Gammage Scholarship for their leadership on the stage and in their community and school. These winners will receive $500 to use toward furthering their education. This year ASU Gammage is participating in the national program, The Jimmy Awards. The winners of the Best Lead Male and Female categories at the awards ceremony at ASU Gammage will head to New York City in June to compete for the national title! The ASU Gammage High School Musical Theater Awards is open to the public and promises to be a lot of fun. “People can expect a fun and energetic evening with a bit of performance, but most of all pride from teachers, students and their families as they get to represent their schools and their musical theater programs,” said Melissa Vuletich, Cultural Participation Program Manager. “This evening will showcase the amazing talent that we have right here in our state and allow us to celebrate the next generation of theater professionals,” said Colleen JenningsRoggensack, executive director ASU Gammage. DID YOU KNOW? THE HISTORY OF ASU KERR CULTURAL CENTER Carefully tucked in-between lavish shopping centers and hotels in north Scottsdale sits the ASU Kerr Cultural Center. This hub of music and fine arts is more than a typical concert venue though, because it used to be home to an Arizona arts legend.
K E R R KO R N E R
Louise Lincoln Kerr was a composer, violist and patron of the arts who came to Arizona in 1936. Her father was real estate tycoon, John C. Lincoln, who built the Camelback Inn and for whom Lincoln Drive was named. She married Peter Kerr, and they had eight children. Originally, she moved from Cleveland, Ohio to Flagstaff and then onto Scottsdale in order to help one of her daughters who struggled with a respiratory illness. Unfortunately, her daughter passed away. Kerr continued to make music and support the arts from her home. On her property, Kerr built a small theater and guest cottages, called “The Shacks,” where fellow musicians could come to perform or write new music. Occasionally, Kerr would also provide financial assistance to struggling musicians. Visitors such as Pablo Casals, Isaac Stern, the Budapest and Juilliard String Quartets, and Kerr’s music students all collaborated on the grounds. In addition to building relationships with established musicians, Kerr also helped organize local music organizations such as the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Chamber Music Society, Arizona Cello Society and the Phoenix chapter of the Monday Morning Musicale. Over the course of her life, Kerr composed over 100 pieces including: symphonic tone poems, works for chamber orchestra, a violin concerto, numerous piano pieces, string quartets, piano quartets and quintets, ballets and incidental music, and numerous duos for piano and other instruments. Kerr received the nickname, “The Grand Lady of Arizona Music” for all of her artistic accomplishments. Kerr passed away in 1977, but her legacy continues to live on. In her will, Kerr donated two acres of land, her home and studio to Arizona State University. In 1981 ASU Gammage began managing the grounds. In 2004 she was inducted into the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame, and in 2010 the ASU Kerr Cultural Center was officially registered as a historic venue.
Today, most of the cultural center remains how Kerr left it. The five-bedroom home and the performance hall are still composed of dried adobe bricks, the hand-carved sugar pine doors are still intact and the east door is still framed by a collage of empty beer bottles. In the performance hall, the performer’s kitchen still contains appliances from the 1950s. The changes made are subtle; Kerr’s home has been slightly altered to accommodate employees and an extra storage room has been added to the side of the studio. Concerts, lectures, plays, parties, weddings and religious services have been taking place on the property since the studio opened in 1959. Charles Lewis, a student of Kerr, still performs at the venue with his jazz quintet. Pictures of Kerr and her family line the walls of the studio and her home, reminding visitors of its historic past. ASU Kerr Cultural Center is located at 6110 N. Scottsdale Road. asukerr.com l Savanah Yaghsezian • savanah.yaghsezian@asu.edu
