SAYING GOODBYE TO A FRIEND

DIRECTOR’S SPOTLIGHT

Photo: Tim Trumble

On January 22, we lost our dear friend, donor and a longtime member of the ASU Gammage family, Jerry Appell. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was one of ASU Gammage’s strongest advocates and supporters. Year after year, his generosity extended to his service on the 50th Anniversary Leadership Board, where he helped garner support to ensure that ASU Gammage continues to thrive, as well as his sponsorship of the Golden Gammage Gala. Jerry raised the bar high for support of art and culture.

“Jerry raised the bar high for support of art and culture.”

His love of ASU Gammage, Broadway and theater, as well as the fullness to which he lived his life, served as a model for us all. He is irreplaceable. Jerry and I shared many wonderful meals together over the years talking about his love of Broadway. He so very much appreciated the Broadway Series at ASU Gammage and the inside connection to Broadway. He was very fond of the ASU Gammage staff and felt at home in the theater. We, too, were very fond of Jerry, and he is deeply missed. I find solace in knowing that the last year of Jerry’s life was a good one for him, filled with the love of his family, great theater, fun cast parties, donor lunches and friendship. In his memory, we would like to share a profile from last year’s January/ February issue of the VIP Newsletter, found on page 7.

GOLDEN GAMMAGE GALA

STAR STUDDED GALA SHINES ON •

Jennifer Haaland

The Golden Gammage Gala (GO GAGA) on March 7 is teeming already with unmatched brilliance. Like a new found constellation, this year's event is aglitter with new stars to honor and preserve our ever changing, but ever bright ASU Gammage galaxy. “Culminating with this Golden 50th Anniversary, this final gala celebrates the iconic last building of Frank Lloyd Wright,” says Leslie Rich, the remarkable chair of all three galas. This year Rich is joined by co-chair Mary Way who she describes as a “fabulous asset.” “If you look back, and I’m a firm believer in this, what you understand and remember about cultures are their arts. Specifically landmarks … the Louvre, the Metropolitan, the Great Wall,” she rattles off with eloquent conviction. “We have this really wonderful group of individuals from all over the Valley that have been meeting regularly for the last three years. We’ve had the greatest time working toward a goal to heighten awareness of ASU Gammage because the building is iconic … like the White House, the pyramids, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower. These buildings, our icons, must be preserved for future generations as evidence of our culture and of our commitment to the arts and society.” Fittingly, this year's gala theme is stars. Rich, who is an interior designer by trade with a flare for making things sparkle, notes, “This anniversary gala is all about stars … stars on Broadway, stars that have gotten started at ASU Gammage. But the most important stars are our patrons, the 500,000 people who come to ASU Gammage every year. They are our stars. They make it all worthwhile for us to be doing what we're doing, to help raise money and facilitate some of the improvements that will be coming to the hall.” 4

GOLDEN GAMMAGE GALA

Sutton Foster and Company in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s ANYTHING GOES. Photo: Joan Marcus

New Stars Are Born The gala evening itself will twinkle with a host of new faces and traditions. Namely, Broadway sensation Sutton Foster is headlining the evening's entertainment and the very first GAMMY Award will be presented.

TalkBack Thursday, Camp Broadway to the Rising Star of Broadway awards are just some of our [Arizona] programs that enhance and further Broadway and touring Broadway. Sutton is honoring that work.”

This past year Foster starred in her latest Tony-nominated role as the title character of the Broadway production of VIOLET. Foster is probably best known for her Tony Award®winning performance in THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE, and she also originated roles in the Broadway productions of LITTLE WOMEN, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and SHREK THE MUSICAL. In The Roundabout’s revival of ANYTHING GOES, Foster earned the 2011 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, Astaire and Broadway. com's Audience Favorite awards for her starring role as Reno Sweeney.

In addition to Foster's gala appearance, Rich bubbles with news of a new Gammage tradition. “We’ve created the GAMMY Award this year. It's designed to spotlight a person with outstanding national or international presence for their theatrical work as well as their commitment to the arts."

ASU Gammage Executive Director Colleen JenningsRoggensack thinks about Foster's starring appearance at the Gammage gala in metaphorical terms. “I often say that Broadway is the longest road in America, and ASU Gammage is the brightest stop on that road.” She elaborates by tying her personal knowledge of our architectural performance hall masterpiece to the acclaimed actress. “Tony Award®winning Sutton Foster and the Broadway community considers ASU Gammage the top theatre for touring Broadway. It is an important theatre for Broadway actors as many have performed on our stage. The 50th Anniversary of ASU Gammage and the renown cultural participation work ranging from the national ATPAM/League Diversity Initiative,

Then, with drum roll aplomb, Jennings-Roggensack announces, “We are presenting this first annual GAMMY Award for excellence and outstanding contribution to Broadway … to David Stone. As producer of the phenomenal and long running WICKED, along with the work he has done to change the Broadway fare through IF/THEN, THE 25TH David Stone ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE and NEXT TO NORMAL among others, David Stone is a leader of Broadway and touring Broadway.” Noting he will be present to accept the award, she concludes, “There are record breaking shows of IF/THEN and WICKED playing around the world because of David Stone.” VOLUME 5 | 2015

Celestial Celebration Sure to maintain the gala’s star struck image, the shimmering Broadway personalities are in keeping with the glowing elegance of this year's new venue and the new glitzy featured guests at GO GAGA 2015. “Here’s a great scoop,” Rich offers with in an excited, whispery conspiratorial tone. “Mo Rocca is going to be our emcee for the night! His main role will be to keep us all laughing.”

GOLDEN GAMMAGE GALA

Humorist, journalist and actor Mo Rocca is well known for his off-beat news reports and satirical commentary. Currently a correspondent for “CBS Sunday Morning News,” he’s also a panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show “Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me!”. He spent four seasons each as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” before hosting his current Cooking Channel hit series “My Grandmother’s Ravioli,” in which he learns to cook from grandmothers and grandfathers across the country. On an enthusiastic roll, Rich continues, “Another new addition this year will be a live auction with a phenomenal auctioneer from Kansas City named Yves Rojas. And you will be dumbfounded by the items we have to auction off!” As a tease, she offers just one vague description, “For instance, Broadway Across America has given us an amazing travel package with tickets to see various musicals in the United States and abroad.” The place where it all happens is due some notable enthusiasm, too. “We are excited to move to the gorgeous, grand iconic ballroom at the Arizona Biltmore,” says Rich as she explains the change. “The last two years that it was onstage at ASU Gammage, we were constrained with the size. Only 330 people could come. We're branching out now so we can get more people because this is our last year of doing this. If people want to participate and show their appreciation, this is the 50th; this is it.” “This year, ASU Gammage has been awarded under the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation the recognition and ability to use their logo. It’s such a nice tie in because the Arizona Biltmore was designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, he oversaw the construction plans.” To round out the sparkling evening’s description Rich adds a final detail of ambiance. “We really wanted to give you a feeling of a glamorous place on Broadway, a place where you'll be royally entertained. So we have huge, mounted production posters from past shows at ASU Gammage, signed by the touring cast members, that will line the entrance to the ballroom. They will be available for purchase. All your favorite Broadway shows will be surrounding you with these posters. These stars are golden and for this one evening, you will be starred to death! It will be the showstopper of the social season this year.”

Mo Rocca

With a sentiment spanning light years forward, JenningsRoggensack waxes nostalgic. “I believe president Gammage and Frank Lloyd Wright’s dream about a magnificent theater to house the world’s best art and culture for the community has come to fruition. It’s now my job, along with the help of community donors and patrons, to ensure ASU Gammage's future stays bright for the next 50 years.” Seizing the opportunity to express her admiration for the ASU Gammage staff who operate always as reliable individual pulsars, Rich concludes, “The people I’ve worked with at ASU Gammage are the most competent, creative people I have ever run across. They're a truly thrilling group whose dedication to the arts is unparalleled.” “And Colleen. She is our shiniest star. We’re in awe of everything she does and we’re trying to catch up to her all the time. Colleen is terrific, knows everybody, has got the connections, makes things happen at the drop of a hat. It’s really like 6 degrees of separation with her. She really does make us all want to do better,” Rich says of JenningsRoggensack and her full-time employees that have provided the guidance for the galas she's chaired. This 50th glows golden, from the patrons to the pay-it-forward volunteers to the star-studded cast to the tireless staff. During and after this most lustrous of ASU Gammage galas, its stars will continue to shine bright and strong. l

REMEMBERING JERRY APPELL At the age of 13, Jerry Appell attended his first Broadway show in New York—SKIPPER NEXT TO GOD—and when the lights went down he experienced “the most exhilarating, magical experience at that point in his life.” From that experience on, Jerry was hooked on Broadway and has made it a family tradition ever since. In the 46 years that Jerry has lived in Arizona, his children Glenn, daughter-in-law Tran and daughter Felice along with his grandchildren Bennett and Harrison have made theatergoing a family affair. The Appell family are avid supporters of ASU Gammage and make a tradition of attending the shows together. Some of Jerry’s fondest memories were of bringing his grandsons to many shows over the years including sharing his love for Mel Brooks.

JERRY APPELL

Jerry’s Broadway passion also transitioned into his business life. Jerry occasionally invested in Broadway musicals, including HAIRSPRAY and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN. Jerry relocated to the Valley in 1967 and started Weight Watchers with his business partner. l Top Right: Jerry at his home. A NEW CHANDELIER

A NEW CHANDELIER •

By Cameron Mackintosh

It’s almost 30 years since my first acquaintance with the PHANTOM. One cold February morning in 1984 while I was soaking myself in a long hot bath, Andrew Lloyd Webber telephoned me for a gossip. He dropped into the conversation the idea of making a musical out of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Even in my prune-like condition, I recognized Andrew had come up with another great idea. We screened copies of the 1925 Lon Chaney silent movie and the later wartime version with Claude Rains as the Phantom. Though very enjoyable, neither one made us shout “Eureka!” So we managed to find a copy of the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was out of print, and decided that we preferred that original storyline. The original production went into rehearsal in London on August 18, 1986. Director Hal Prince and choreographer Gillian Lynne assembled a wonderful cast and after several weeks of exhilarating mayhem PHANTOM opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on October 9 and immediately proceeded to become one of London’s greatest musical hits.

8

ASU GAMMAGE INNER CIRCLE

Eighteen months later our trio of original stars—Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton—opened to rapturous applause on Broadway where the show is still running triumphantly at the Majestic Theatre making it the longest-running musical in Broadway history. During its almost 30 years, PHANTOM has become the most phenomenal success of all time, breaking box office records worldwide in countless sell-out productions. Since 1986, only the original version has been presented around the world (with the exception of Poland and Hungary which were nonreplica productions) and its brilliant design by Maria Björnson has become synonymous with Andrew’s sensational score. Just before Maria died at a tragically early age, she and I had started discussing a different set design, one that would do more to contrast the Phantom’s darker backstage world with that of the traditional opera world onstage.

A NEW CHANDELIER

Andrew agreed with my proposal, that it was time to give PHANTOM a fresh look, so in 2008 I approached theatre and opera designer Paul Brown to see if he was interested in taking over the baton from Maria to bring his own style and vision to our notion. It turned out that Maria had a special place in Paul’s life as at the beginning of his career he had been a young assistant to her at the Royal Opera House. The result of Paul’s long-developed ideas for this project—which took a hiatus while Andrew produced LOVE NEVER DIES— is a new version of PHANTOM that uses a more visceral dramatic approach to create a visual feast, giving audiences the chance to see their favourite musical all over again through new eyes. Putting together the rest of the new creative team for this PHANTOM, following in the footsteps of Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, was a daunting but invigorating task. Joining Paul Brown, my choice of director was always going to be Laurence Connor who I first met when he became the Associate Director on the London production of PHANTOM. Since then he has directed acclaimed versions of MISS SAIGON and OLIVER!, and co-directed the hugely successful new production of LES MISÉRABLES. He also recently staged the triumphant 25th Anniversary production of PHANTOM at the Royal Albert Hall. As choreographer, we both wanted to work with Matthew Bourne’s talented protégé, Scott Ambler, who I had first worked with on MY FAIR LADY a few years ago. To light the show, we are lucky enough to have one of the world’s greatest lighting designers, Paule Constable, and to create the sound, the incomparable Mick Potter. Maria still remains at the heart of the new PHANTOM with her glorious costumes, some of which are designs found in her archive that she created for the original and were never used. This new version of PHANTOM premiered in the UK in 2012 and was immediately embraced by both audiences and critics alike, breaking records throughout its sellout British tour. For the American production, we have been able to build on our British success and fine-tune some of the staging, including making the famous chandelier even more spectacular. We all believe that you will fall in love with the music of the night all over again, as the Phantom is reborn for the 21st century. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA plays ASU Gammage May 27–June 7, 2015. Tickets on sale now. l

NICK CARTELL

MEET NICK CARTELL ASU Gammage is excited to welcome back Nick Cartell in May to perform in PHANTOM, Nick was honored at the Season Announcement event in March 2014 and was given the ASU Gammage Rising Star of Broadway Award. Nick grew up in the Valley and spent time performing at Valley Youth Theater and Phoenix Theatre before making his Broadway debut in 2012 in the revival of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR understudying the roles of Jesus Christ, Judas Iscariot and the High Priest Annas as well as Kathie Lee Gifford's SCANDALOUS THE MUSICAL. Tell us about growing up in the Valley and how the local theater scene impacted your arts experience. The Valley is where I received so much of my training and experience. My first theatrical performance was with Valley Youth Theatre’s (VYT) production of PINOCCHIO, back when VYT was a touring company. The first time I stepped on that stage, I was hooked. Performing with VYT and Greasepaint, I received the foundation and discipline of what it takes to grow and become a professional in a field that I love. From there, I began to work with professional companies like Phoenix Theatre, which pushed me further and challenged me as an actor. From this community, I have formed lasting friendships, something that I am extremely grateful for. It is extremely sad that Actors Theatre of Phoenix had to shut it’s doors; I have so many friends that have graced that stage and I really hope that Phoenicians realize the talent that is in their backyard and start supporting it before it disappears.

What are you most excited about when you come to perform at ASU Gammage? Being able to perform for all of my friends and family. To show all of those that have supported me from Arizona that I have done what I always planned to do and to thank them for never doubting my talent. I am also just really excited to be able to bring this beautiful production to Tempe. PHANTOM is such a special show for so many people and I think that audiences are going to love the changes that have been made, while still staying faithful to the story and beautiful music. I just wish that my Granny was still alive to see me do PHANTOM here, but I know that she is watching with front row seats from above.

Tell us about memories of attending ASU Gammage. I have so many great memories of seeing shows at ASU Gammage and most of them involve seeing shows with my Granny. For a few years, we bought season tickets together. It was always our afternoon out and I loved having that time together. One of the first shows that I saw at Gammage was PHANTOM. I remember sitting with my parents and watching as this beautiful production unfolded before me; I was completely enamored with the show and still am to this day. I always dreamed that one day I would be able to perform on the stage at Gammage and I am so happy things are coming full circle. The only other time I’d set foot on the stage at Gammage (prior to our PHANTOM press event in March 2014) was to accept my diploma from ASU.

What did it mean to win the Rising Star Award? It really meant the world to me. To be recognized for all of the hard work that getting to have this career has taken and will continue to take—‘rising' is a verb, things are always in motion, always changing, and you have to be able adapt and keep up—is incredibly special and I am so honored. When I was presented with the award I was in complete shock, but again it’s that feeling of coming full circle. All I can say is thank you! l Dana McGuinness • dana.mcguinness@asu.edu

AMERICAN AIRLINES RECOGNIZES ARTS ARE VITAL IN A COMMUNITY It takes every one of American Airlines’ 100,000 employees to run a great airline. The focus and determination of its employees to offer the best customer service in the industry is remarkable. One of the things American is most proud of, though, is that its employees, passengers and shareholders continue to support those most in need. American Airlines truly believes that community stewardship is reflected by building strong partnerships with nonprofit organizations that strive to meet critical community needs during both good and challenging times. They recognize that a vibrant arts and cultural community is vital to a sustainable economic future for any large urban area, and its commitment to the arts is part of a philanthropic mission to enhance the quality of life in the communities it serves. In a time when arts organizations are working twice as hard with half the resources, American is proud to further strengthen Phoenix’s community by supporting ASU Gammage, one of the largest university-based presenters of performing arts in the world. From Broadway to the ASU Gammage BEYOND series, theatergoers are entertained and challenged while enjoying diverse and thought- provoking performances.

HEROES NIGHT

Photos: Tim Trumble

HEROES NIGHT 2015 Since 2011, ASU Gammage has hosted its annual Heroes Night. This event is dedicated to honoring veterans, active duty military and their families. This season Heroes Night took place on Tuesday, January 13 during the opening of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT. The evening included a pre-show salute from the stage featuring Diana DeGarmo and the national anthem played by 108th Army Band with the ASU ROTC presenting the colors. Before the show in the ASU Gammage plaza, there was patriotic music and the evening was an opportunity for members of the military and their families to see a Broadway performance and participate in a pre-show reception with food provided by My Big Fat Greek Restaurant at no cost. For ASU Gammage, it is important to have a special night each season to recognize these brave men, women and children who make sacrifices every day to ensure our freedom. Since its inception, Heroes Night has hosted nearly

1,000 military family members. “This tells a number of us that what we do really does matter, and that it is noticed. I can only hope someday that all those vets that came before me get to feel what my family and I felt at Heroes Night,” says First Sergeant Steve Radnor, Heroes Night participant. ASU Gammage is committed to veterans, active duty and their families. Our goal through programs such as Heroes Night is to come together as a community and honor all the sacrifices our military and their families make every day! ASU Gammage is committed to expanding more programs for our nations Heroes and will launch Operation Date Night on Wednesday, April 22 during MOTOWN THE MUSICAL. Heroes Night is made possible with additional funding provided by the Arizona Lottery, APS, George Brazil Home Services, Macy’s, My Big Fat Greek Restaurant and The Arizona Republic/AZCentral. SUPERSTORE WHAT WE SHARE: SUBARU SUPERSTORE OF CHANDLER AND ASU GAMMAGE

DONOR PROFILE

Owners of Subaru Superstore of Chandler, Richard and Lisa Cvijanovich, share so much with ASU Gammage. Both organizations are actively passionate about arts and education. And about sharing. “We’re a local, family owned business supportive of local charities. We like to align our philanthropic interests with those of our clients,” says Lisa about their generous sponsorship gift that makes Subaru Superstore of Chandler the official auto partner of the ASU Gammage Broadway Across America Series. “We personally, as well as our clients, really value the arts and education.” During Subaru’s Share The Love campaign, Subaru Superstore clients will designate almost $50,000 of Subaru funds to six charities; $250 for every new Subaru vehicle sold to the customer’s choice of the following national charities: ASPCA, Make-A-Wish, Meals On Wheels, and National Park Foundation. In addition Subaru Superstore added two local charities; the Alzheimer’s Association-DSW & Chandler Education Foundation (for local student and teacher scholarships). “We are excited to be able to share more love with more charities—including the charities in our owners’ backyard like Alzheimer’s Association-DSW and CEF,” said Richard Cvijanovich. In addition, Subaru Superstore recently donated $10,000 to sponsor multiple VEX Robotic teams, part of an international program in which teams of junior high and high school students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams from around the world in a game-based engineering challenge. In addition to huge investments in arts and education, both Subaru and ASU Gammage share a deep commitment to honoring our military as well. While ASU Gammage provides scholarships and celebrates with Military Family First Nights and an annual Heroes Night dinner before a Broadway show, Subaru offers a year round military price discount program on vehicles to active and active reserve service members. Across the board, from family to corporation to non-profit organizations, the Cvijanovich family, Subaru and ASU Gammage are well matched. It makes perfect sense to add, Subaru of America has donated more than $50 million to causes they care about, and that their employees have logged

more than 28,000 volunteer hours. That the Cvijanovich dealership has continued to renew their annual commitment to ASU Gammage and their other interests fits equally well. “We like to stick to and build long term relationships with not just our clients, but the charitable organizations we choose to support,” says Lisa. “Our sponsorship of ASU Gammage is our way of supporting the arts locally and reflects our client’s appreciation of theatre and live performance,” reiterates Richard. ‘Love, it’s what makes Subaru, a Subaru’ is the theme around which Subaru, known as the best-seller of all-wheel-drive cars in America and MotorTrend’s only four-time winner of the Sport Utility of the Year Award, builds both its selling and giving strategies. And as Subaru Superstore of Chandler, the Cvijanovich family and ASU Gammage well know, love wins biggest when shared. l Jennifer Haaland The Subaru Superstore of Chandler is located at 1050 S. The program aims to create a pathway connecting promising young performers to the professional theater industry and is the year-end culmination of awards programs across the country presented by dozens of professional theater organizations. Finalists in New York were named Best Actress or Best Actor at a regional competition, representing approximately 1,000 schools. While in New York City, participants experience five days of private coaching, master classes and rehearsals with theater professionals. Their week’s journey concludes with a panel of industry experts selecting exceptional students for The Jimmy™ for Best Performance by an Actress and Actor. Students receive opportunities for merit scholarships, professional advancement and other prizes. (For more information on the national competition, visit: nhsmta.com.) ASU Gammage is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting the 1st Annual Arizona High School Musical Theater Awards on May 2, 2015 with plans to participate in the National Awards in 2016! Arizona high schools will be presenting Spring musicals for adjudication and competing for the prestigious awards of Outstanding Musical, Outstanding

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS

Lead Actor and Actress, Outstanding Supporting Performer, Outstanding Dancer, Outstanding Technical Achievement and the ASU Gammage Award for two graduating seniors that not only provide excellence in their craft, but also who represent themselves as a role model to other students within their community. Scholarships will be given to the two students who win the ASU Gammage award as well as a Director’s Package to the school that wins Outstanding Musical. The event itself, which will be modeled after the Tony Awards®, will be a showcase for the theater students and teachers of Arizona to shine in front of a captivated audience of peers and the public alike. Tickets for this red carpet event will be available for purchase by the general public and will be announced on the ASU Gammage website once available. We look forward to continuing our work of Connecting Communities™ through the AZ High School Musical Theater Awards program and hope to expand every year with more and more schools being able to compete! Composer and saxophone player Azar Lawrence will be joined by GRAMMY-winning multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Payton and vocalist Nayo Jones on Wednesday, April 29 for A Taste of New Orleans, two special New Orleans jazz performances at ASU Kerr Cultural Center. Show times are 6:30 and 9 p.m. Tickets are $65 premium, $50 reserved, $35 general admission and available at asukerr.com or 480.596.2660. In celebration of the Billy Strayhorn centennial, a portion of the program will pay tribute to the prolific composer. Strayhorn is known for his three decades of collaboration with Duke Ellington. New Orleans music of several styles will be explored, including swing, neo-soul jazz and soul. Songs from Lawrence and Payton’s new live CD “The Seeker” will also be featured. Azar Lawrence is a composer, arranger and saxophone player and has performed as a sideman to Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw. Lawrence was the tenor saxophonist Tyner used following John Coltrane’s death. Lawrence performed with Davis at Carnegie Hall, where they produced and recorded the “Dark Magus” album. Lawrence was also an Azar Lawrence integral part of Earth Wind & Fire, working closely with Maurice White, composing on piano and writing three songs for the highly-acclaimed “Powerlight” album.

Payton was born and raised in New Orleans. He was given his first steady gig by guitarist Danny Barker at The Famous Door on Bourbon Street. After touring with Marcus Roberts and Elvin Jones in the early '90s, Payton signed a recording contract with Verve; his first album, “From This Moment,” was released in 1994. In 1996 he performed on the soundtrack of the Nicholas Payton Robert Altman film “Kansas City.” Payton received a Best Instrumental Solo GRAMMY in 1997 for his work on the album “Doc Cheatham & Nicholas Payton.”

KERR KORNER

ASU KERR CULTURAL CENTER PRESENTS A TASTE OF NEW ORLEANS JAZZ SERIES • By Stacey Bailey

New Orleans artist Jones will join Lawrence and Payton, bringing her signature style of neo-soul jazz and New Orleans-influenced vocals. She ventures into other styles, such as bossa nova and New Orleans second line, a tradition rooted in the brass band parades of her home city. She has been signed by Universal Records and is currently touring the country with New Orleans' own Kermit Ruffins. She is a regular at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Jones’ rendition of “The Christmas Song” made the Top 100 mostplayed songs on Billboard during the 2014 holiday season. Lawrence, Payton and Jones will be joined by local players Dowell Davis (drums), Ted Sistrunk (upright bass), Yanni Goudelis (piano), Kerry Campbell (alto sax) and Doc Jones (keys). Doc Jones, producer of the event and Nayo Jones’ father, thought ASU Kerr Cultural Center was the ideal venue for this special series of shows. “The venue has the best sound system in town for its size, every seat in the house makes audience members feel like they’re in the front row—it has such a great up-close and personal feel.”

100K MILESTONE

50 TH ANNIVERSARY ORGAN CONCERT

ASU Gammage gratefully acknowledges these individual donors and foundations whose cumulative giving totaled $100,000 or more as of July 2014. The contributions of these generous benefactors, in partnership with those of other visionary patrons, sponsors and volunteers, have incalculably enriched our community.

NEXT ORGAN CONCERT SET FOR APRIL 1 Since October, ASU Gammage has opened its doors to the public to celebrate its 50th Anniversary by reinstating FREE lunch organ concerts each month. The concerts start at noon and admission is free to the public. Parking is available in the ASU Gammage lot on a first come, first served basis in “pay per space spots,” which are the numbered spaces. The rate is $3 per hour. When ASU Gammage first opened in 1964, ASU President G. Homer Durham instituted free organ concerts at noon for the community and the students. We are excited to bring back this wonderful tradition to the ASU community and the community at large for our 50th Anniversary. The Æolian-Skinner Organ was installed in 1965, and Dr. Alexander Schreiner, of Salt Lake City, performed the inaugural recital. The organ was a generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Hugh W. Long.
