THE SALA STORY

SALA Design Group was founded in Hong Kong 2007 by Mr Ashley Sutch and Mr Scott Dyde, two exceptionally talented landscape designers hailing from Australia and Great Britain. Ashley and Scott first met several years earlier while working together in the United States. Their passion for design and a similar sense of humor created a unique working relationship that was energetic, full of creativity and whimsical. Having successfully designed numerous projects throughout SE Asia and with the trust and backing of great clients, Ashley and Scott settled in SE Asia to spearhead what was later to become one of SE Asia’s most talented landscape design and planning firms - SALA Design Group. The name SALA comes from a Thai word meaning an outdoor pavilion with open sides used as a place to rest and reflect while taking shelter from the sun or rain. Ashley and Scott took this as the name for their company as it encapsulates the spirit of their design work - finding comfort in a place so that one can enjoy the outdoor environment. Since establishing SALA Design Group back in 2007, the company has grown from strength to strength on the success and reputation of each new project. In 2008, SALA set up their first branch office in Bangkok to oversee the increasing resort and hospitality projects being commissioned in Thailand. 2009 saw the opening of the company’s primary design studio in Singapore to take advantage of the local talent base and centrality of SE Asia. The Singapore office is headed by Ashley. And in 2010, a Wholly Owned Foreign Enterprise was established in Shenzhen to meet the demands of its increasing work in China, now headed by Scott. The Hong Kong office remains the central administrative and legal office for SALA Design Group handling all contractual and legal issues. Despite the company’s rapid growth and success, each project is handled personally by Ashley and Scott who oversee the key design work for each project to ensure design quality is achieved and delivered. All of the SALA offices work together collectively on any one project, matching the talents of key personnel best suited to the type of project and any specialist requirements. Unlike other large international design firms, SALA does not ‘hand down’ design work to juniors or inexperienced job captains. Typically, any major presentation during a design phase will be attended by Ashley or Scott.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - VIETNAM Camh Ranh Masterplan Hyatt Regency A comprehensive integrated resort complex on the picturesque beach front of Camh Ranh south of Nha Trang. The site accommodates two luxury resort sites with beach front villas, sport and recreation areas. The landscape master planning offered clear direction for the subtle use of thematic elements and local artwork and a bold planting palette suited to the coastal environment. Luxury lap pools and extensive grading and waterways creates an intriguing resort garden for guests to explore.

PROJECTS - MASTER PLANNING - VIETNAM Song Hong Hotel - Luxury 5 Star Hotel, Hanoi Masterplanning and design for a new 250 Key lake front hotel with alluring VIP suites and romantic boardwalk connecting a retail precinct, yacht club, restaurant and sports park. An independent spa complex overlooking the lake is set to be a destination in its own right. This fully integrated resort town centre is a well suited adjunct to the surrounding master planned community.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - THAILAND Dusit Boutique Resort Koh Samui Embracing the Thai concept of “Devarana” which means “garden in heaven”, the landscape design for this resort excites the senses and enriches the soul. It is a stress-relieving environment achieved by virtue of the surrounding natural beauty and a refined, culturally sensitive design. The result is a contemporary resort landscape with healing, spa like qualities.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - THAILAND Langham Miora Resort Phuket Perched on a steep hillside overlooking the delightful Kalim Beach, this Hotel offers a private escape with stunning sunset views. A dramatic curved, cantilevered pools overlooks the luxury guest suites connected by a series of tree top walkways and decks. Roof top terraces, fire pits, shade sails and lounge areas provide the guest with intimate spaces for relaxation, meditation, reading and respite.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - THAILAND Phang Nga Resort Phuket An exclusive collection of beach side villas clustered around existing site features to offer stunning vistas of the Phang Nga beach. Informal infinity edge pools were designed to complement the clean lines of the architecture and mimic the natural sand dune formations and wave action on the site.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - THAILAND Resort Branding Study Phuket A site planning and project branding study for a prestigious hotel operator for a confidential site in Phuket. SALA explored the notion of a quite relaxed, ethnic approach with bold use of colour and dramatic thatched roof forms, marrying the development sensitively with the sloping terrain.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - THAILAND Yamu Hotel Phuket A Phuket luxury resort located on the tip of Cape Yamu overlooking the breath taking Andaman Sea and Phang Nga Baysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dramatic limestone cliffs. The resort is carefully set within a natural coastal rainforest, designed in collaboration with Denniston and Philippe Starck. PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - INDIA Jaypee Greens Hotel Noida, India Visually Inspired by the rich layers of Indian history and culture, the design concept for Jaypee Greens Hotel reinterprets the traditional patterns, gems, artwork and colours of India to create a unique and visually stunning landscape design. While contemporary in style the design is balanced with shimmering accents that are unmistakably Indian. Each space is decorated with rich materials that sparkle and reflect light to create spaces that begin to rejuvenate and inspire guests the minute they enter the hotel.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - CHINA East Coast Resort Dameisha, Shenzhen One of Shenzhenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, first true residential resort communities. Designed in collaboration with SWA Group and WATG architects, this hillside residential resort embraces the beachfront lifestyle with an integrated retail village, lagoon and hillside streams The site planning respects the sites topography and capitalizes on the ocean view of nearby Dameisha Beach. Use of natural local materials, relaxed comfortable spaces and a fresh calming ambience truly sets this resort apart from its island neighbours.

PROJECTS - HOTELS & RESORTS - PHILIPPINES Kaliksi Island Resort Palawan Island, Renovations Bold tropical planting, rich in texture and colour immerse the guest in the unique Palawan beachfront landscape. Informal palm groves provide dappled light and bold lighting highlights the local carvings and totums.

Local artisans have created unique sculptures that compliment the hot springs experience while adding drama and theatre to the landscape experience. These intellectual artistic touch points provide an enriching experience and modern yet timeless aesthetic.

A series of outdoor rooms leads you on a journey through the Indian landscape, from the spice trails, to the arid savannah plains for a unique guest experience.

PROJECTS - GOLF & LEISURE - VIETNAM Bana Mountains Golf Course with IMG, Danang Designed by Luke Donald in association with IMG and located just 25 minutes from the centre of Danang, Vietnam, and set amidst a valley surrounded by native forest. The Ba Na Hills mountainous site is very unique from the current offering of golf courses in the Danang area. This unique mountain course offers a great mix of natural topography and vegetation, which provides a challenge for all levels of golfers.

PROJECTS - GOLF & LEISURE - THAILAND Tai Muang Golf Course Resort Masterplan Masterplanning for renovation of the existing Tai Muang Golf Course for PCCW, involved development of a new town centre, Marina, floating resort and new residential enclaves. Design required a sensitive approach to site planning to incorporate existing features, mature trees and capitalizing on some of the best beachfront land in Phuket.

By virtue of carefully considered site planning and topographical analysis SALA was able to ensure that each residential unit had an open view to the golf course, maximizing profitability for the developer and operator.

Featuring intricate stone carvings, detailed artwork and classical touches this project engages the resident by slowly uncovering its hidden secrets in carefully layered rooms, framed views and courtyard spaces.

PROJECTS - VILLAS & ESTATES - CHINA Wuhan Residential Community Wuhan Drawing inspiration from a traditional Spanish styled lakeside village integrating a town centre and residential community, thoughtful plant selection and detailing was used to create a believable atmosphere with integrity while meeting local market demands.

7. Resources Our team has very capable landscape trained staff and CAD support in all of our offices. We have highly trained staff to support our projects worldwide, not to mention our strategically located office in Shenzhen to services projects within Mainland China. We have access to some of the latest GIS technology using ARCVIEW and embrace graphics and 3D Modelling software such as SKETCH UP, ADOBE products and are proficient supplying high quality 3D renderings, animations, physical models and multimedia productions if required. Professional Experience Since 1992 Ashley has had a leading role in the concept planning master planning and urban design for many prestigious Urban, Mixed use, Resort Residential Communities throughout the Asian region and the US. These include broad scale master planning such as The Halong Bay Unesco World Heritage site in Vietnam, Dameisha Town Centre and Citic new town in Chengdu, China. Ashley has proven expertise in executing such projects from concept to built works with a specialty in waterfront urban design, both public and private such as the Rockwell Centre in the Philippines and Cairns Esplanade in Queensland Australia. As an Urban Designer and Landscape Architect Ashley has a passion for the landscape and extensive horticultural experience with Birkdale International has given him a solid knowledge of tropical plant species which is reflected in his excellent award winning planting designs for resorts, hotels and residential communities. Formerly a principal of Tract consultants in Brisbane Australia, Ashley has spent a number of years with the SWA Group in the USA and has been pivotal in the development of the firms mainland China market through the implementation of projects in Zhuhai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Shanghai. In 1997 Ashley was appointed Landscape Project Manager for Rockwell Land Corporation, a leading urban land development company in the Philippines and in 1994 an Associate Landscape Architect at Hassell, Queensland (Multi-disciplinary design firm consisting of Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Interior Design and Planning). During this time he has been exposed to many facets of landscape architecture, master planning and urban design. Professional Philosophy The quality of the environments we create is the result of a creative design process that engages the skills and talents of a multi-disciplinary team. Professional Experience Scott’s international experience has given him a diverse understanding of environmental design strategies across all scales and aspects of the profession. His designed works range from small intricate detailing of site furnishings to the planning and design of large tracts of land that span several kilometers. ‘The shifts in scale between the micro and macro are exciting, at

the core of every project is the design process which draws together a creative group of people that can achieve the clients brief and deliver an innovative design solution that is geographically and culturally responsive’ says Scott. Having lived in SE Asia for the past 10 years, mostly in Thailand, Mainland China and for the past 3 years, in Hong Kong where he is now based, Scott has a wealth of rich experience from working within the region.
