Mini Puzzles

Fun with Maths This is a valuable collection of maths activities, primarily for 6-11 year olds, to be used at school with a teacher or at home with parents/guardians. The activities first appeared in Welsh and English on Twitter (#minipuzzle @GarethFfowc). Their publication in this book is partly funded by The Rayne Trust, following a period of working with staff, parents and children at Ysgol Merllyn, Bagillt, and with the help of trainee teachers from Bangor University’s School of Education. Dyma rai awgrymiadau: •• Cynnig cymorth ar y cychwyn: Darllen y geiriau gyda’ch gilydd Ble ddylem ni ddechrau? •• Annog y plentyn i arbrofi: Tybed a oes unrhyw atebion eraill? Tybed beth sy’n digwydd gyda rhifau/siapiau eraill? •• Defnyddio adnoddau cyfarwydd: Y pethau sydd o’ch cwmpas yn y tŷ — llwyau, ffrwythau, tuniau bwyd ... Using the Activities How can you help children to be confident with mathematics? Here are some suggestions: •• Offer some help to get going: Read the words together Where shall we start? •• Encourage the child to experiment: I wonder if there are any other answers? I wonder what happens with other numbers/shapes? •• Use everyday objects: Things around you in the house — spoons, fruit, tins ... Play equipment — blocks, counters, dice ... •• Don’t rush things: Avoid answering on behalf of the child Be willing to put things aside until later •• Be patient: Give the child plenty of thinking time Let the children use their own words •• Getting the ‘correct’ answer isn’t the main aim: Take the lead from the child rather than insisting on reaching a particular answer Be flexible regarding the use of correct language •• Ask open questions: How did you get that? I wonder if there’s any other way of doing that? •• Learn together: I wonder how we could do that? Great question! What do you think? •• Praise: That’s fantastic! Wow! How about showing that to ... •• Above all, have fun! Children use maths all the time — when they lay the table, help with the shopping, play games. The possibilities are endless. The activities in this book offer opportunities for children to explore new mathematical ideas.
