a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Happy Easter The Easter Bunny is upon us. Forget those kilos and enjoy every mouthful of that yummy chocolate, those family gatherings and be very grateful that we live in Australia and are able to celebrate with our loved ones. We have all been through a lot over the past 12 months, so enjoy it while we can and think about all those overseas that are still in lockdown. Another very successful month for our artists with exhibitions opening back up and competition wins .. so proud. Andrew Haysom has been studying hard over the past month and shares with us a new Photoshop feature called Super Resolution. What a fantastic tutorial this is. The Digital Artists Group have put together another Chinese Whipsers image for you, and
this month it has a very magical feel to it. Dean Hohn, one of our very talented photographers has kindly shared with you another Photography tip to try this month on Focus Peaking. A very useful tip to try. Introducing to you this month’s Featured Artist, Kim Ricci. Kim is a very talented artist and I know you will all enjoy the images she has put
together for you and her art journey to where she is today. This month’s Artists Challenge was “Fire” and goodness our artists didn’t disappoint us. From bushfires to campfires, fireplaces to fire dancers, an exciting array to browse through. I hope you all enjoy. Well, that’s it from me for another month. Happy Easter everyone. Stay safe and take care of each other. Pam

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SUPER RESOLUTION By Andrew Haysom
In the latest Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) update - version 13.2 – Adobe have introduced a new feature called Super Resolution. This uses the Adobe artificial intelligence engine to quadruple the resolution of an image, that is the height and width of the image are both doubled giving four times as many megapixels. With the images I have tested this feature on it has done a remarkable job. Usually when Adobe updates the ACR program, Lightroom Classic gets the same new features, but that is not the case at the moment, but this may follow at some time in the future. Therefore, if you are a Lightroom user you will have to open your images directly in Photoshop/ ACR to take advantage of this feature (as opposed to using the Edit In Photoshop command from Lightroom). Also, the Super Resolution feature is not available when using Camera Raw as a filter from within Photoshop, only when the image file opens initially in ACR prior to passing the image to Photoshop. The Super Resolution feature will work on Raw, JPEG, HEIC or TIFF files. If you want a JPEG, HEIC or TIFF file to open in ACR, rather than opening straight into Photoshop you can change your Camera Raw Preferences to make this happen. In ACR, click the gear icon in the top right corner, then choose File Handling, then make sure that both the JPEG/ HEIC and TIFF settings are set to “Automatically open all supported …”JPEG/HEIC (see Figure 1).
[Fig 1 – Camera Raw Preferences File Handling]
40
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
Alternatively, you can open Adobe Bridge, find the file, right-click on it and choose “Open in Camera RAW”. Once in ACR, either click the menu icon on the image in the film strip (this looks like three dots), or right-click the image, to bring up the menu, then choose Enhance (see Figure 2).
[Fig 2 – Camera Raw Right-click menu]
The Enhance Preview dialog is opened (see Figure 3).
[Fig 3 – Enhance Preview dialog]
41
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
Make sure that the Super Resolution check box is ticked and press the Enhance button. The process may take a little while, and will be longer the larger the file you are upsizing, but it doesn’t seem to take as long as the estimate shown on the screen on my Macbook Pro, but this may be dependent on your computer speed too. Once the process is complete you will be returned to the Camera Raw screen, and you will notice that you now have another image file in the film strip (see Figure 4).
[Fig 4 – Camera Raw showing new DNG file]
This new file will be a RAW file with file type DNG and it will have been created in the same folder as the original file. The filename will be the same as the original file with “–Enhanced” appended to it. Select this new file in the film strip and press Open to open it into Photoshop. This new functionality will allow you to create larger versions of your files should you need them for sale or for printing. As I said earlier it seems to me to do a really good job, and is a welcome new feature.
Andrew

CHINESE WHISPERS #41 “FANTASIA” Well this was certainly an interesting month. Meet your artist Kim Ricci Adelaide, SA Australia
62
Website :
https://artistsdownunder.com.au/artist-3/kim-ricci/
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I was born in the UK, but lived in Adelaide since I was 8 years old. My husband and I have been married for 43 years this February and we have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. We have a small family concreting business, for which I do the bookkeeping. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have been using Lightroom to organise and edit my photos for quite a while but had no idea how to use Photoshop. I came across Sebastian’s Photoshop Artistry course online and the idea of being able to learn the program and the possibility of being able to create images like the ones his students were creating was very appealing. I haven’t looked back since. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Often it can be the little things like the day my granddaughter arrived with a large leaf she had saved for me for my art, or it might be a stray thought or a remembered photo that sparks an idea. I also enjoy the challenge of the Shift Art competition. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? For me it changes. Sometimes i will look for a model image first, and at other times I will start with a background scene. I use a combination of my own images and those available to us from the various courses. If I still can’t find what I’m looking for, I will use pixabay. There are days when I have no real direction and I will just pick a photo and start playing. What does your art mean to you? It has become a part of my everyday. I look forward to the time I get to spend crafting an image. I love that I am continually learning and evolving as an artist. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? When I first started taking photography seriously, it changed the way I see things and I feel that photo artistry has taken it one step further. I take even more notice of the details and see their potential in a future piece of art. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I admire and am inspired by so many different styles of art that it is hard to single out any one artist. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I have noticed that I can often look at a piece of art and know who the artist is. I would love to develop my own style and reach that stage one day. If it doesn’t happen, I will just enjoy the journey.

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS FOCUS PEAKING By Dean Hohn
Focus peaking is a focusing aid used in live preview or electronic viewfinders on digital cameras that places a white or coloured highlight on in-focus edges within an image using an edge-detect filter. Wikipedia Focus peaking has been offered on video cameras for some time, but only recently on some stills cameras. The advent of the mirrorless cameras with EVF’s has enabled this function to be incorporated. Most DSLR Cameras don’t have Focus Peaking other than some of the latest models. My Nikon D850 had it and some of the latest Canon cameras have it. There is a 3rd party software called Magic Lantern that is available for some Canon DSLR Camera. Magic Lantern is a firmware add-on for various Canon digital single-lens reflex cameras and the EOS M. It adds features for DSLR filmmaking and still photography and is free and open-source. Wikipedia Focus Peaking is used in Manual mode or in Live View to focus your image. It is found in the Menu. Canon-AF Menu

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS (CONT....)
Threshold Settings Low – Low threshold has a LOW tolerance for out-of-focus areas. The camera has a low tolerance for focus error. Requires absolute precision to highlight the edges. Looking for maximum sharpness. High – High threshold is kind of lazy. It will highlight the edge even if it isn’t really in focus. You will get the highlight sooner with a High threshold than you will with a Low threshold setting. High is actually easier to see because it’s outlining more edges than with the Low setting. It might be better to start off on the High setting and then if you need fine detail, switch to Low Threshold mode.
What is it good for? 1. Rapid focus at moderate DOFs 2. Focusing on Fine Details 3. Quickly set Hyperfocal Distance What is it Not good for? 1. Extremely shallow depths of field – colours may hide the edges 2. It can be distracting at times Note* Primarily used when shooting on a tripod.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
