a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Happy Easter everyone and welcome to another exciting edition of Artists Down Under. Life certainly has it’s challenges. As we now slowly return to what we call a “Covid normal”, we are hit with floods, outbreaks of Japanese Encephalitis and rising fuel and food costs, but our artists stay safe in their creative imaginative minds, living their fantasy tales in their images they create. A wonderful place to be and I am glad to be able to share some of their images with you. Our Artists have had a very successful month of Achievements, with one of our artists launching a new book. Congratulations Margaret Kalms, what an amazing achievement. Our Featured Artist for the month and also this month’s Interview is with one of our newer and very talented menbers, Lynette Paul. Lynette comes from Hamilton In NZ, and has an amazing style that I am sure you will all fall in love with. Andrew Haysom shares another of his awesome and informative Photoshop tips for you, plus the Digital Artists Group have another of their Chinese Whispers series for you all, The Artists Monthly Challenge for April was to come up with an image on Aeroplanes, they certainly didn’t disappoint. Well that’s it from me, so until next month, stay safe and take care of each other.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION WEBP FILE FORMAT SUPPORT By Andrew Haysom
IN PHOTOSHOP
With Photoshop version 23.2 (released February 2022) Adobe have added full support for the WebP file format. You can open, edit and save WebP files natively in Photoshop. This was previously only available using an optional add-in. WebP was developed by Google as a replacement for JPG, PNG and GIF. It is not new, having been first announced in September 2010, over that time support for the format has slowly been increasing. WebP supports both transparency and animation, neither of which is available in JPEG, for these features we would normally use PNG or GIF. WebP has a lossless (no compression) option as well as lossy compression options like JPEG. WebP has a bit depth of 8-bits, like JPEG. The WebP compression algorithm creates smaller files than JPEG (or higher quality for the same size). Google claim file size savings of around 25-35% over JPEG, but my tests showed bigger savings than that. I decided to do some tests on four different images of my own (see Figure 1).
[Fig 1 – Example images]
40
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
As with all compression algorithms the amount of compression (and therefore reduction in file size) varies depending on the image content. The more intricate detail and tones in the file the less compression you’ll get. Images with large areas of similar colour (eg a lot of blue sky) will compress a lot more. You’ll note in Figure 1 that the compression results with WebP do yield some impressive results. Comparing the highest quality JPEG with the highest quality compressed WebP, the results across the four different files were 36%, 53%, 44% & 48% or an average of 45% better compression. Comparing images with slightly more compression, the JPEG 10 vs WebP 80, the results across the four different files were even more impressive at 57%, 71%, 74% & 58% or an average of 65% better compression. If you’re looking to save images with transparency, and you usually use PNG, you’ll see impressive results too. My file size comparisons showed results of 63%, 67%, 67% and 36%, or an average of 58% better compression (comparing PNG Large to WebP Lossless). The savings would be even greater using WebP at a high-quality lossy setting. If you are someone who uses TIFF files because you want a completely lossless image the results of comparing TIFF to Lossless WebP is even more impressive. My file size comparisons showed results of 81%, 87%, 84% and 96%, or an average of 87% better compression. Please note though these were 16-bit TIFFs, but WebP Lossless files are still significantly smaller than 8-bit TIFFs. As far as quality goes, at fit-to-screen size I really could not detect any visual image quality difference with any of the WebP Lossless, WebP 100 or WebP 80 files compared to the originals. Even pixel-peeping up to 200-300% there was no visible difference with the WebP at the 100 or 80 quality setting. Just like JPEG, once you push the compression further you will start to see pixel differences and increasing artifacts, this is inevitable with heavy compression. There is no question that WebP will offer you either increased quality (if you don’t want to save file space) or decreased file space at the same quality when compared to JPEG. If you want to view another detailed look at some image comparisons, I would recommend this YouTube video from Greg Benz. It is worth noting his caveat about images with high colour frequency images like night cityscapes and the loss of colour intensity he notes with WebP at higher compression settings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO6F5EUZcBc The vast majority of web browsers now support WebP. According to Wikipedia as of November 2021 the web browsers that support WebP have 96% market share, so perhaps it is time to consider a change.
41
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) There is ample evidence that the faster a website performs the better the engagement from users it receives. Hosting sites usually impose storage limitations (or want more money for more space). So, if you have an image heavy website, perhaps converting images to WebP will be a worthwhile time investment for you. Of course, in order to do this your web hosting platform will need to support WebP and many do. If like me though you use Adobe Portfolio platform for your website you will have to wait a while longer, as at the time of writing, Portfolio does not allow WebP images. Whilst Facebook has supported WebP files for some time I have noticed that the web browser version of Instagram currently does not allow uploading of WebP files. I’m sure these things will change over time.
The implementation of WebP into the new version of Photoshop is intuitive. Just open and edit WebP files as you would any other file type. If you want to save an image as a WebP file you can do so in the Save As or Save A Copy dialogs by simply choosing WebP from the Formats drop-down (see Figure 2).
[Figure 2 - File Save a Copy dialog box]
You will then be presented with the WebP Options dialog (see Figure 3), where you can choose Lossless or Lossy (with a choice of Quality), and other options like whether to save XMP and EXIF metadata and Photoshop Extras (print profiles/settings, paths, guides etc).
So for smaller files and greater flexibility and simplicity (one file type that supports raster images as well as transparency and animation), it would certainly be worth investigating WebP.
[Fig 3 – WebP Options]
In my own case, I am going to start using WebP for the files I post to social media, and when Portfolio is updated to support WebP I will begin converting the images on my web site to WebP to see if it improves performance (I expect it will). Andrew Haysom

Meet your artist LYNETTE PAUL Hamilton New Zealand
Website:
60
https://www.instagram.com/lynettepaull/
1. Tell us a little about yourself and where you live? I am married, have two adult children, and live in Hamilton, New Zealand. I am a keen photographer and photo artistry gives me motivation to take more photos and to take more interest in the photos I have. 2. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have always loved photography and an interest in developing my skills in Adobe Photoshop. I have done a lot of digital scrapbooking and found an advert for Sebastian Michaels class. I am so pleased I signed up. 3. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I get a lot of inspiration from other artists, including the contributors to Artists Down Under and Living the Photo Artistic Life. I enjoy photography and I attempt to use artistry techniques to emphasise components of my photos that interest me. 4. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? Most of my projects are a mixture of vision and experimentation, and sometimes there is a lot more experimentation than vision. I attempt to incorporate new or modified techniques in each new project. 5. What does your art mean to you? With some of the challenges we all face it is great to offset these with all the positive things that make us happy. I get a lot of enjoyment from looking at photo artistry and it is very rewarding attempting to produce my own examples. 6. Do you think since starting in photo artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Photo artistry has caused me to see different things and potential in my existing photos and to seek out subjects for new photos with a different focus. Now our children are adults and I work fewer hours I have more time to create and develop my skills. 7. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I get a lot of inspiration from so many artists both in the digital magazines, Instagram and Pinterest. So much inspiration, so little time. 8. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I hope to continue learning new techniques to unlock more potential in my art. I am making a conscious effort to be a bit more ambitious. I would love to sell some pieces and even have an exhibition. That would be amazing.

INTERVIEW AN INTERVIEW WITH By Maureen Maxwell
LYNETTE PAUL
I’VE ENJOYED LOOKING AT YOUR FLOWER ART. DO YOU LIKE TO CREATE THEMES WITH YOUR ART, AND IF SO, HOW DOES THE IDEA OF A THEME START. The themes for my artistry normally stem from my favourite photo subjects. Over the years these have evolved but include flowers, ornate doors and lighthouses. I have a large library of photos to draw from in each of these categories. DO YOU INTEND TO DO THEME BASED PROJECTS IN THE FUTURE? AND DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA IN MIND? I like to experiment with different artistry techniques. So even when using a common theme, for example flowers, changing the type of flower, it’s composition and the evolving techniques creates plenty of scope for new projects. Having said that I expect to experiment with alternate subjects but likely outdoor still life subjects with interesting colour and texture.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT FLOWERS THAT ATTRACTS YOU TO CREATE SUCH BEAUTIFUL IMAGES? Flowers look stunning before applying artistry Techniques. The range of types, colour, sizes and textures is vast. The potential for an artistry project benefits from this powerful starting image.

INTERVIEW - LYNETTE PAUL (CONT....) YOU HAVE SUCH BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE FLORA AND FAUNA IN NEW ZEALAND THAT ATTRACT SO MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS. DO YOU GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO PHOTOGRAPH THEM OFTEN? My husband and I have two adult children so have plenty of opportunity on weekends to explore. Like a lot of people, we brought e-bikes as an exercise option during periods of lockdowns. There are amazing cycle trail facilities across the country. Many of these rides provide new vantage points for my photography. DO YOU START YOUR CREATIVE IMAGES WITH YOUR OWN PHOTOS? That is my preference but I have found some wonderful images on Unsplash as well. Photography and Photo Artistry are two of my favourite hobbies so one feeds the other. Lynette Paul - Snowdrop
WE FIND OUR MEMBERS USE A RANGE OF SOFWARE APPLICATIONS AND PLUGINS TO CREATE THEIR ART. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE SOFTWARE YOU USE AND WHY? I use Adobe Photoshop for editing and Adobe Bridge for photo management. Photoshop is such a powerful application that despite using it for a long time I still feel I am only scratching the surface. DO YOU HAVE A CLEAR IDEA OF WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE BEFORE YOU START CREATING? AND DO YOU FOLLOW A PARTICULAR PROCESS? Normally I select both an image and a primary technique I want to base a new project on. If the technique is new to me, I might seek a tutorial to familiarise myself with it be fore starting on my image. After that I consider what is working and what I am not 100% happy with and experiment. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE CONSIDERING PHOTO ARTISTRY AS A WAY OF PUSHING THEIR PHOTOGRAPHY FURTHER?
Lynette Paul - Happiness
I highly recommend taking Sebastian’s photoshop artistry course. You learn so much from the course and with all the bonus resources you just can’t go wrong.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
