a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
A big hello to all our wonderful readers and welcome to our August edition of Artists Down Under. I think most of you will agree that we are all just about over Covid lockdowns and cold weather, so it got me thinking of ways to entertain ourselves whilst being at home. What better way than to set our Artists some challenges for the next few editions of our magazine, starting with this month’s Monthly Photographic Challenge, “The Tim Palmer CityscapeTechnique”. Tim Palmer is an amazing Artist and belongs to our International Photoshop Artistry group. Our Featured Artist this month is George Koncz. George has an amazing way of bringing vibrant colours together into his work that gives a totally awesome look to his images. I am sure you will all be very inspired by his work. We have another of Andrew Haysom’s much loved Photoshop tutorials, This month it is on the very tricky Frequency Separation Redlands Digital Group have shared another of their images in their Chinese Whispers series. Our lovely artist Julie Powell shares with us one of her recent Photo Shoots that she has done titled, “Shoot For The Moon”. It certainly looks like both Julie and her model had tons of fun. I hope you enjoy this edition of Artists Down Under. Stay safe and take care of each other. Pam

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION FREQUENCY SEPARATION By Andrew Haysom
Frequency Separation Frequency separation is a post-processing technique often used by portrait retouchers for removing blemishes and uneven colour patches from skin but it can be used for so many other types of edits. The frequency separation process separates your image into two separate layers. The first layer is the colour and tone information (low frequency) the second is the detail or texture information (high frequency). The process for creating these layers from your image is somewhat complex, and involves the following steps: - making two copies of the image - blurring one copy enough to remove the detail/texture (this becomes the “Colour” layer) - subtracting the blurred layer from the original image (using Apply Image) to create a layer that looks a lot like a High Pass sharpening layer (this becomes the “Detail” layer) - setting the blend mode on this detail layer to Linear Light. You don’t need to worry about the detailed method above though, because the link below will allow you to download a free Photoshop action to create the frequency separation layers. This video, featuring Aaron Nace from PHLearn, is a great introduction to creating and using frequency separation layers. Look for the link in the video to download the free action. If you want to skip the stuff about how to manually create the layers and only watch the bits about actually using them, you can skip to about 5:50 in the video. “The Amazing Power of Frequency Separation Retouching in Photoshop” video from PHLearn can be found here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldhG9fmgC7o
34
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) You will note that the action folder contains two different actions, one for 8-bit images and one for 16-bit images, so run the correct action depending upon the bit depth of your image. Once the image runs you will be presented with an information box where you will have to press Continue, and then the Gaussian Blur dialog will be shown. Choose a blur radius that causes the detail to disappear (I usually find the default value presented by the action is fine). Press OK and then one more information box will be presented, press Continue to complete the action. You will notice that a group containing two layers has been added to the top of your layer stack (see Figure 1). The HF layer contains the detail of your image, the LF layer contains the colour and tones of your image. You can edit these separately now to give yourself much better editing control. Watch the PHLearn video for a detailed explanation.
[Figure 1 – File menu]
You can use tools like the Healing Brush and Clone Stamp tools on the HF layer to adjust the textures and detail of the image. You can use tools like the Healing Brush, Clone Stamp and Brush tools on the LF layer to adjust the tones and colours of the image. The video also details another method to effectively even out colours by selecting, feathering and blurring areas of the LF layer. Please note that when using the Healing Brush, Clone Stamp or similar tools on these frequency separation layers you must ensure they are set to only affect the selected layer (i.e. set them to Sample: Current layer). Try Frequency Separation as a way to improve the accuracy of your editing and remember the technique does not have to only be used on portraits. Andrew Haysom

Meet your artist George Koncz Cessnock, NSW Australia
Website : http://www.artistsdownunder.com.au/artist-2/george-koncz/
52
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I am a retired architect and builder. Lived in Sydney in my younger years but moved to Cessnock in the Hunter Valley forty years ago. Architecture gave me a good foundation towards photography while I was practicing. It was probably a lot more rigid compared to what we can now achieve with Photoshop and by being part of a group like this. Photo Artistry opened up a whole new concept for me. When I first saw the advertisement for Photoshop Artisty by Sebastian, I knew that it was exactly what I was looking for. The biggest inspiration for me is just seeing what each of our members in this group can achieve in every magazine. I have been very fortunate in being in every issue of the Artists Down Under magazine. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry and what inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Since I retired about four years ago, I have taken up photography more seriously. There are many local groups of photographers and we have different themes and venues where we get together to improve our photography skills. Most of these are model shoots in various locations. My favourite photography is portraits. It is always interesting to see the finished edited photos from the photographers. Even though we took photos at the same place with the same models, the edited photos are always quite different. This is the same with Photo Artistry. All the images are very individual. We all seem to have a very unique approach as to how we achieve the results that we are after. I am sure that most of the time each art work evolves and changes and it’s sometimes hard to even know when you have finished it. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? My approach is that I have a general idea of what I want to do with a photograph and then try various effects to enhance it to a stage where I am happy with it. My style has lots of colour which I really like. I like a bold statement that stands out. What does your art mean to you? My art means a lot to me even though I have never even sold one item. I had an exhibition in our local library and I had some of my photos displayed in one of the doctor’s surgery. The feedback was very positive but it seems that it is extremely hard to achieve a sale. I have been collecting frames which are really quite unique and fitting my art works to suit. It is very satisfying to hang them in my photo studio but sadly that’s where they end up. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Since starting photo artistry it has changed me in that my style is a bit different to some of my photography friends. It is really rewarding when the models are really impressed with their edited photos.
53
Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I take inspiration from a lot of the artists in our group and I have to say that my favourite artist is still Pam Henderson. I just love the feel and the flow of her characters and the backgrounds she puts together. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I don’t really have any big ambitions for my future projects. It is just satisfying to be able to have such a great hobby. Putting these ten photos together I tried to do two similar ones which could go on each page. There are architectural ones, animal ones, models shoot ones, mystical ones and bold backgrounds. I enjoyed putting them together and thank you for considering me as a featured artist in the magazine.

PHOTO SHOOT BY
JULIE POWELL
SHOOT FOR THE MOON Without the moon, there would be no night, and night is a time for lovers. Deep dark shadows cocoon us and wrap us in their tender embrace. For who does the moon shine? For all those who covert the shadows, those who steal and skulk away from the sun and its false promises. The sun offers light and warmth, but she also lays bare what we would perhaps rather others did not see. The Moon, so fair and lovely, gently washes the land in subtle colour and light. Under this fair moon, I declare that I love thee to the moon and back. Whether shall I love thee once the moon has gone? Shall we set the moon alight again tonight my dear? We part each morn and tell nothing of our forbidden love. Our passion wanes as the moonlight is stolen away by the pale caress of daybreak. I had this idea of a Victorian Chimney Sweep style person who instead of lighting streetlamps and such, actually looked after the moon. She notices it is not glowing, so she climbs her ladder in the clouds, takes the moon down, cleans it, and puts it back up and then turns it on. Once her work is complete, she admires the moon for a moment, perhaps dreaming of her own love, before returning home. We used a studio with a high ceiling, a black velvet backdrop, a very old ladder we had, surrounded it with bags of hobby fill (for clouds) Then dressed the model in steampunk clothes and gave her a vintage lantern and cleaning cloth. WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
