Whats On Traces V exhibition 5 February - 21 March Belconnen Arts Centre, Belconnen, Canberra Belco Arts says this about the exhibition: “2020 arrived like no other year. We wanted to acknowledge, honour and pay our respect to all those who were involved in preserving life, our environment or impacted by and journeyed through the extremity of all that 2020 presented. We invited artists and creatively adventurous individuals from throughout Australia to respond to the theme of Traces V, investigating the impact of climate change, environmental devastation, global health crises and transformation, what traces they left behind (both physical and psychological) and the process of recovery and renewal. https://www.belcoarts.com.au/traces-v/

whats on Pantone 311 exhibition 25 February - 14 March M16 Gallery, Griffith, ACT The colour turquoise. The Marsden Art Group have created an exhibition using 311. Abstract images and images of tropical seas, glamorous women and fantasy landscapes are featured in this unusual exhibition. The colour is explored, enhanced, blended and combined. It is used to accentuate and emphasise, to create depth and generate a mood. It can be bold and dominate or quiet and serene, turquoise weaves an enigmatic passage through the exhibition. The threads of turquoise, seen as drifting strands and blocks of colour across the works of the exhibition, demonstrate a fresh energy that moves from the power of contrast to the exploration of depths and the harmony of tranquillity, exploring relationship and correlation and giving a strong sense of cohesion to the works of these often very different artists. https://www.m16artspace.com.au/new-gallery-4

BLURRING T HE LINES An Exhibition by Art Photo Fusion By Maureen Maxwell

In late 2019 four friends based in South East Queensland formed a creative group called Art Photo Fusion. Phillipa Frederiksen, Marisa Liberato, Barbara Dudzinska and I decided we wanted to have some fun together whilst we encouraged each other to grow creatively, and to share ideas and techniques. All of us have been involved in various Photo Artistry courses run by Sebastian Michaels. We started by meeting for lunch every month to talk about our art and what we wanted to do with our group. We were then given the opportunity to hold a joint art exhibition at the One Arts Gallery at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in June. This gallery is a community-based operation and run entirely by volunteers. The pandemic situation prevented that happening and we were offered an alternative time of December 2020 through to mid-January 2021, which we happily accepted. Our ‘Blurring the Lines’ exhibition opened on Saturday 5th December. We are all delighted with how the exhibition looks. Even though the four of us were first photographers, and then photo artists, we all do very different styles of art. As a result, it is a most eclectic collection. It is also a first for us individually and for our group. We have presented our images using various types of media including canvas, framed paper prints tand printing on metal. There are also textile art sculptures based on photographs. Barbara has produced a book about our exhibition. You can browse through and see all of our art through this link. https://issuu.com/throughcameralens/docs/art_photo_fusion_exhibition_2020 This has been an exciting opportunity and a collective opportunity for us all.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION EDIT FILL PATTERN SCRIPTS By Andrew Haysom

It constantly surprises me how often I find things in Photoshop that I didn’t know were there. This article documents one such I found just last week. In the Edit Fill dialog there is an option to fill with a custom pattern, first let’s remind ourselves how to create a custom pattern. Load the image or element you want to use on a transparent background, then create a selection around the object. Choose Edit / Define Pattern. In Figure 1 I have used a skull postage stamp found on Pixabay. Type a name for your pattern and press OK.

[Figure 1 – Define Pattern dialog]

Now to use this to fill, create a new document with a transparent background and choose Edit / Fill from the menu. The Edit Fill dialog (shown in Figure 2) is presented. Choose Pattern from the Contents drop-down list, then choose the custom pattern you just created (or the one you want to use) from the Custom Pattern drop-down list. When Pattern is chosen a check-box labelled Script is activated, which when checked activates another drop-down list to choose from a number of scripts that allow a number of ways to fill your image with the chosen pattern.

44

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)

[Figure 2 – Edit Fill dialog]

Choose Random Fill from the Script drop-down list and the Random Fill dialog will be presented (see Figure 3). As its name suggests Random Fill will randomly place copies of your custom pattern to fill the area. The Density slider determines how densely your pattern is used to fill the area.

[Figure 3 – Random Fill dialog]

One word of warning is that the preview screen at the left hand side of the dialog box, in my experience, is not terribly accurate so there will be some trial and error to get the effect you want.

The Minimum scale factor and Maximum scale factor determine how large the copies of your pattern are (relative to its original size). If you leave these two sliders set to the same value all copies of your pattern will be the same size, if the minimum and maximum are different, the size will be varied. The Rotate pattern check-box determines if your pattern is randomly rotated (or not). Use the Color randomness and Brightness randomness to change the color and brightness of the various copies of your pattern. Figure 4 shows the result of the settings shown in Figure 3 with the skull postage stamp pattern. You can repeat the random fill command to further fill your background, either on the same layer, or on another blank layer. You can also use copies of the original layer maybe rotated or transformed in some way. Figure 5 shows the results of another example, using a single palm leaf for the pattern, and using the settings in the above dialog to change the size, colour and brightness of the leaf.

45

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)

[Figure 4 – Skull Postage Stamp background

[Figure 5 – Palm Leaf background]

As well as the Random Fill option in the Scripts dialog, there are five other options that create patterned arrangements of your custom pattern, Figure 6 shows examples of these, but each does have its own dialog box with options, so the variation is seemingly endless.

[Figure 6 – Examples of other Symmetry Fill options]

So, use your imagination and see what you can come up with! Andrew

CHINESE WHISPERS #39 “PATIENTLY WAITING” STAGE 1 Yet again Pam has done a superb job in finishing this collaborative art work. Apparently I set her quite a hard task, but the end result is wonderful. I believe, that over the time Pam and I have been working in collaboration to produce a combined art work, we have both increased our knowledge and skills as we learn from each other.

Meet your artist Robyn Lakeman Melbourne, VIC Australia

Website : https://www.instagram.com/robynlakeman/ https://www.instagram.com/robynlakemanbirds/

66

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in The Dandenongs in Melbourne. I moved here in 1985 with my husband and son. I have always loved photography and did my first Technical college course (these days called TAFE) in 1970. My first husband was a professional photographer so we always had a darkroom. I still have but haven’t used it since I went to digital in 1999. In the 80s I did a leadlight course so worked with glass for many years making leadlight windows. I started a business Australian Birds in Glass making Australian birds that you could hang in windows. In 1992 the Government bought some for the Expo in Seville, Spain. When decoupage became big in the early ninties I formed my own wrapping paper and card business, Aqua Unicorn Images. I was the first person to manufacture decoupage paper in Australia. A few years later in the 90s I also started designing beaded pieces, amulet bags, chokers etc., brought out a beading book teaching people to bead on a loom, and manufactured beading patterns with my designs. In 1997 I had a series of heart attacks and ended up closing down Aqua Unicorn images. That was when I started doing creative art on the computer. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? My friend Michelle Fay Baker encouraged me to join as I had been doing creative work since I first got Photoshop and Corel Painter in 1997. The first thing I did on the computer was paint a portrait of Pat Rafter, the tennis player, from scratch with a pen and tablet. I went on to run his website and was given his fan site to continue. Over the years I did less and less creative work, concentrating on my photography and other things. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I can get inspiration everywhere, always seeing pictures and scenes or just a colour or moment will inspire me. In lockdown it was a perfect time to continue on with my creativeness and art. I was so inspired again by Sebastian Michaels’ course. There was a time I had done a lot of creative work from 1997 but in 2007 I took over an international photography competition site, Shutterbugs.biz and I had hardly any time to be creative Even after I sold it in 2014 I didn’t spend a lot of time on creative art so was wonderful to indulge again. Now we are out of lockdown I have been travelling and photographing. I must find some time to be creative again. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? No not really, I get an idea and run with it. What does your art mean to you? My art is very personal and sometimes it will take ages for me to show anyone. I will create a piece and then feel vulnerable and wonder if people will like it. I guess we never grow out of doubting ourselves. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? I taught myself Photoshop so wasn’t always up to date with it especially in the years of Shutterbugs.biz where I didn’t have much time to learn new things. I’m grateful to Sebastian, Photo Artistry and Michelle, that I learnt a lot of new things which made my life easier. I used to do things my way and sometimes that would take a lot of time but so great to learn new techniques and ways.

Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? Not really. I do see work that I absolutely love but would never copy it anyway. I always like to use my own ideas. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I’m happy just to do my art whenever I have time and for myself. My next steps are just to find the time to create some art occasionally.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn

As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis

Art

by Margaret Kalms

50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise awareness and money for women’s health! We all need clothes & household goods. Buy yourself a treat or buy a special gift for your friends. Make your shopping count! Remember 50% of profit goes to endometriosis research!

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
