a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Welcome to another edition of Artists Down Under. Wow, it is February already, the year is already flying past quicker than I can think, but our artists are still keeping up with the pace and producing some wonderful art for everyone, and with lots of achievements and exhibitions on hand, it’s going to be another fabulous year. The Redlands Digital Art Group kindly shares another of their images from their Chinese Whispers series for you all to enjoy. What a lot of fun and challenges this group has. Our Featured Artist for this month is the ever talented Trish Hoskin. Trish is a very successful artist having sold her images and exhibited world wide. Trish has a very distinctive style that I just love and know you all will to, so please take the time to scroll through her work, it is well worth it. After a lot of begging and pleading, Maureen Maxwell has put together another interview for you this month with none other than myself. I hope you all enjoy. Our ever amazing Andrew Haysom shares with us another special Photoshop tutorial. This month it is on Advanced Masking for Local Adjustments. A very interesting and informative tutorial that I know you will all enjoy and learn from. I raised the bar this month and set the Monthly Artistic Photo Challenge with Fruit as the category. It created many a scratch of the head, but our artists have come up with some awesome images to share with you. That’s all from me this month, I hope you enjoy this edition of Artists Down Under as much as I enjoyed putting it together for you. So until next month, stay safe and take care of each other.

INTERVIEW AN INTERVIEW WITH OUR EDITOR By Maureen Maxwell
PAM HENDERSON
Pam, you have been the editor of our magazine for over 45 editions now. When the creator of the Artists Down Under Group, Athalie Taylor, took ill, you took over the responsibility of producing the magazine each month. From the very beginning the group has continued to flourish in many different ways, and each month we see our artists displaying their art in a huge variety of ways. The quality of the overall art, and supportive articles, have continuously improved since we started at the beginning of 2017. Our achievements are inspirational. The magazine is a team effort by many people. However, we are all very thankful that you have taken on the considerable task of producing the magazine each month. Many of our members have indicated they would like to know a little more about you, so I’m really pleased you have agreed to do this interview. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START ON YOUR ARTISTIC JOURNEY? I have always loved photography and I have always had a very vivid imagination, but when I finally plucked up the courage to do a Diploma in Photography, it just never seemed to satisfy my brain. What the camera saw was not what I saw in my thoughts. If only I could tweak the image to liven it up a little, if only I could add that little extra to tell the story that I was envisioning. I joined a few online courses that once again progress the photography side and taught me a little of how to use Photoshop, but it still lacked my vision. I was lucky enough to stumble across Sebastian’s course “Living The Photo Artisitc Life” back in 2015, and it was exactly what I was looking for. I had finally found my vision with like minded people to share it with. My journey began.

INTERVIEW - PAM HENDERSON (CONT....) DO YOU ENJOY A PARTICULAR GENRE, OR DO YOU LIKE TO TRY DIFFERENT TYPES OF ART? I love to tell a story and I love to add all the little intricate bits and pieces in the background that go with that story, to make it that little bit more realistic. I seem to be drawn for some reason to women and love to create them with long flowing hair, I guess that is what I have become known for ... lol, the hair. I do however like to try other types of genres and love getting inspired by all the other talented artists we have in our group. Sometimes they work well and sometimes it all turns out to be quite catastrophic, haha, back to the women I go. I would love to do a series of children’s fairytale images in the future, something to work towards I guess. IS THERE A CONSISTENT APPROACH YOU TAKE WHEN CREATING YOUR ART? I guess for me, something will always draw my attention to it, whether it is a background or a model, then I can just visualise the basics of what I would like to do. I scroll through all of my contents and slowly just add and build the story I am imagining, and yes sometimes it just gets thrown out and I start again, ending up with a totally different image to what I first imagined. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT PRODUCING THE MAGAZINE?
Night Games
Keeper Of The Gate
I love to be able to give our artists the opportunity to show their art, to show their achievements and to have the opportunity to hopefully make a start on their artistic journey in life. Each image that I receive is so satisfying as I watch each artist grow as they learn new skills. How could you not enjoy that!

INTERVIEW - PAM HENDERSON (CONT....) WHAT DOES YOUR ART, AND INVOLVEMENT WITH THE ADU GROUP MEAN TO YOU? I love to be creative, I love to visualise and not a lot of people understand that. It is very hard to find someone with the same passion as yourself. The ADU Group are the most wonderful, supportive group of people I have ever had the pleasure to know, they understand. It is amazing just how close you become with a group of people that you have never met, they are very much family to me and I treasure that dearly. My art means the world to me, it allows me to escape reality for a short time, to enter a world of fantasy and to forget all the horrible things going on in the world. We have all suffered losses of loved ones in our lives and my art has helped me to deal with the grief of those I have loved and lost. My art is everything. YOU AND I HAVE RECENTLY CELEBRATED 4 YEARS OF PRODUCING A COLLABORATIVE WORK OF ART EACH MONTH. I’M SURE MANY OF OUR READERS WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THIS COLLABORATION MEANS TO YOU. Oh my goodness, the collaboration is so much fun and so challenging, you never know what you are going to get to to work with. The rules are that you cannot remove any content that has been added within the image. I love a challenge but sometimes I just look at what I have to work with and think OMG Maureen what have you done to me ... lol. I look forward to it every month and of course the paybacks are always fun. I would highly recommend it to anyone that would like to try it.
42
INTERVIEW - PAM HENDERSON (CONT....) CAN YOU GIVE US A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND ABOUT YOURSELF, WHERE YOU LIVE AND WHAT YOUR OTHER INTERESTS ARE.? I was born in Kilmore (Vic) and spent a lot of my childhood moving around country towns in Victoria. My dad worked on the railways and every two to three years he would get transferred. I finally settled in Brisbane and lived there for 20 years. 3 years ago I lost my father, so we packed up and moved to just outside a small country town called Corowa, which is situated on the NSW side of the border (NSW/Victoria), approximately 3 hrs north of Melbourne, to help care for my mum who was not in the best of health after losing her husband of 70 years. Unfortunately we lost her 9 months ago after a horrible struggle with COPD. But the positive side is I am back with my family which is nice. While living in Brisbane, I started handraising parrots for a friend, and that led to me falling in love with them all and not wanting to give them back, so hence I bought them and ended up breeding parrots. I had a total of 55 at one stage ... whoops! After saving really hard, I purchased my first macaw in 2008 and totally fell in love with them, so of course I had to get more. After nine years of trying, I was finally able to breed with them and once again, didn’t have the heart to part with them. I was given the nickname of “The Bird Lady”, I can’t imagine why ... lol! I finally sold off a lot of my birds and now have 5 macaws and 1 Gang Gang - my babies. I am a fairly quiet person really, love my own company and fishing. So inbetween working 5 days a week, caring for my birds and hubby and going fishing, I get the magazine and my art done. A quiet life really ... lol.
What’s next for me, I am in the process of setting up a studio at home where I can offer glamour photography with a twist, my twist ... lol, stay tuned. In the meantime I will continue on with my art, learning new styles and hopefully one day would love to hold an exhibition.

Meet your artist TRISH HOSKIN Adelaide South Australia
Website:
62
https://trish-hoskin.myportfolio.com www.trishhphotography.com
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Adelaide and have done all my life. I have been lucky to travel widely throughout Europe, UK, US and Asia. A lot of this travel has definitely influenced my life and art. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry and what inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? My background in art originally started with watercolour and pastel work and I was involved in an art society for over 10 years. I was introduced to some American art and that opened my eyes to more abstract and colourful art than the standard English landscape type work I had done. I then moved onto Photography – more artistic than technically and then stumbled upon Sebastian’s Photo Grunge site and I was hooked. I joined Awake and then Kaizen. Although no longer a member of Kaizen it has given me a huge insight into Art around the world and I have gained many “online” friends from around the world and I have been lucky enough to meet many from Australia. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Colour is my first visual trigger to inspire me – I love colour and the brighter or varied the better. Texture is another trigger so things like rocks, water, plants and flowers really give me inspiration for my work. I have recently been in a slump and have gone back to physical art such as junk journaling and paper crafting to get my mojo back. I have been watching hundreds of hours of YouTube videos and in turn that has got me thinking about how to create with all the Terabytes of digital content I already own (horrendously embarrassing how many external drives, usb sticks and cloud storage I have). If I never bought another kit and created daily, I could never use them all if I lasted till 90!!! I have changed my styles in the last couple of years and really love text to integrate into my work and really enjoy Bricolage work that has been inspired by Jen Maddocks’ work. Up until recently I was on two Designer teams so had a large variety of digital content to create with as each group of products was released. However, with the death of my beautiful mum in May life became very strange. Now having both parents gone life is very different. I do now have a lot more time on my hands and whilst having to do the required executor paperwork and sort out property, etc., now find a load of time to do other things. I have been able to watch a lot of stuff on the computer and finally it has started to get me motivated to start to create again. With physically creating again it has also sparked more ideas for digital pieces. It has also sparked the idea that actually after printing out my digital pieces I can then use these in my physical art, so a bit of a win-win. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? With my digital art I tend to firstly find one of my images (not hard with over 75,000 on my phone alone) and then decide how I will create with it. Sometimes it is the straight image, other times I use an app on my iPhone or iPad to manipulate it to a certain filter type and then take that into Photoshop and create many layers using digital content from other designers.
63
I have a few favourite Digital Creators such as Anna Aspnes, Foxy Squirrel, Jen Maddocks, Katie Pertiet, G & T Designs. I have to be careful whose I use when creating pieces that I think may sell because of the Commercial Use Licence issues. So, I keep these very separate on my laptop or iPad so there will be no issues down the track. I have been pretty lucky to have sold pieces across Australia and the World and have had work displayed in Greece and Palm Springs in the States and am a Fellow at the Royal South Australia Society of Arts which allows me to display regularly. What does your art mean to you? Art for me is like a safe haven, it gives me a chance to escape from the “everyday”. It is a visual experience and a calming factor. I am willing to look at all types – sometimes it does nothing for me other times it just triggers all sorts of ideas and often it can just make me smile. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Definitely has changed my look at the art world and how I create. I was very “keep inside the lines and stay inside the square”, whereas seeing photo artistry it was like an explosion of colour ideas and assault on the senses. It has been my best friend for the last 5 or 6 years. It helps me get through any tough time. Being able to sit down and either view on the computer via Facebook groups or our magazine is a great leveller. It can take you away from Life into a world to escape any problem. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I have a lady who has been my mentor for over 20 years and I don’t get to see her as much as I would like to these days, but I can always go and spend an afternoon with her and take my laptop or iPad and show her what I have been doing and she will give me a definite no nonsense – “that is fabulous or that is crap” answer and then proceed to explain why. Sometimes if I am really loving what I have done and she doesn’t like it then so be it, but other times if I am swayed to not really be loving it when she explains why and or gives suggestions on how it could be improved it makes so much sense. Her favourite trick for me, and I need to remember to keep doing it, is using a variety of matts cut for a photo prints to place over your piece and find the best part. Sometimes a small section of a piece can just have that wow factor and so by cropping to that section you end up with a way better piece of work. That can really be a game changer. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? That is a hard question. I have tried the exhibitions, craft stalls, shops, websites and have had a reasonable amount of success in sales but nothing noteworthy or give up work type sales. I have pounded pavements knocking on doors etc., and I am a bit over trying to find ways to sell my work – some people look at digital work like what the hell is that – others say wow love that but never get their hands out of their pockets – we can all relate to that. I am not sure what else to try but am aiming to create more with my travel images and create books with pieces with a small story on each piece with it. I have written a book on my London travels and had that published on sites for download so want to take that a bit further with art pieces. Unfortunately, I think that Art is one of the last things people tend to buy and the last 18 months has rocked everyone’s world so think it will be even harder to sell. I do like to create a standard body of work in the same type or theme to give a cohesive look so that is another avenue I have been exploring.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION ADVANCED MASKING FOR LOCAL ADJUSTMENTS IN ACR AND LIGHTROOM
By Andrew Haysom
In version 14.0 of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) released in October 2021, Adobe have greatly improved the masking capabilities. This article shows you these new features in ACR but the operation in Lightroom Classic is almost the same (from version 11 onwards which was released at the same time). You’ll notice that the old Adjustment Brush, Linear Gradient and Radial Gradient tools are no longer in the tool bar, they have been replaced by the single Masking button (see Figure 1). Clicking this (or pressing the M key) brings up the masking dialog (also shown in Figure 1). This dialog appears only when the image has no active masks and allows you to create the first mask by clicking on one of the seven mask types offered. The old Adjustment Brush, Linear Gradient and Radial Gradient appear in the list, and operate in the same way they did before. You’ll also see the Color Range and Luminance Range options. These used to be only available as modifiers to the Adjustment Brush or Gradient tools but are now offered as individual masking options that can be used on their own or in combination with the other tools. You’ll also see two new AI tools that have been available in Photoshop for some time, Select Subject and Select Sky. [Figure 1 – Initial masking dialog]
Once you have created your first mask, the Masking Panel shown in Figure 2 will be visible each time you press the masking button. This panel can be moved around the screen and can also be docked into the main navigator panel.
74
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) If you have created multiple masks, they will be displayed in the Masking Panel (in Figure 2 you can see there are three masks with the default names of Mask 1, Mask 2 and Mask 3. Each mask will consist of one or more sub-masks created with the abovementioned seven tools. The selected mask (in the case of Figure 2, Mask 2 is selected) will show these sub-masks indented below the main mask name. [Figure 2 – Masking panel]
You can rename a mask by double-clicking on the name in the Masking panel.
Selecting one of the masks (or sub-masks) in the masking panel will cause the various local adjust ment sliders to be displayed in the navigator. These are shown in four collapsible panels named Light, Color, Effects and Detail. These are shown expanded in Figure 3. [Figure 3 – Local adjustment slider panels]
Just above these you will see the options panel for the selected sub-mask. The Select Subject, Select Sky and Linear Gradient panels only have an Invert button, but the others have more options to control the way the tool works (e.g, feathering, flow) or to adjust/refine the selection made by the mask. The different options panels are all shown in Figure 4.
[Figure 4 – Mask Option panels]
You can turn visibility of the adjustments associated with a mask (or sub-mask) off and on by clicking the visibility “eye” icon next to the mask name in the Masking panel. You can turn off and on the visibility of all local adjustments by clicking the visibility “eye” at the top of the Masking panel. There is also a “Reset all masks” icon here that will delete all masks.
75
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) Just like the old tools, ACR will show you a coloured overlay (by default this is red) to highlight the selected area of your image. By default, this will appear, and then disappear when you first move any of the adjustment sliders. You can cause the overlay to reappear by ticking the Show Overlay check box, or by hovering the mouse over the icon for the mask or sub-mask in the Masking panel. Clicking the coloured circle alongside the Show Overlay check box will display the Mask Overlay Color dialog which allows you to change the colour and opacity of the overlay. There are also other styles of mask overlay you can choose, these are available on the Overlay context menu (to display this click the three dots alongside the Overlay colour circle (see Figure 5). For example White on Black gives the traditional Photoshop mask view.
[Figure 5 – Mask Overlay options and Mask Overlay Color dialog]
So, while being able to create all these different types of masks gives you lots of control, the true power and flexibility comes from being able to combine the different mask tools, by adding, subtracting, intersecting and inverting them. You will note the Invert button on the Mask option panel, and the Add and Subtract buttons in the Masking panel, there are also context menus available for both the main mask, and each sub-mask component that have these and other options like Duplicate, Intersect and Delete. So some examples; You want to make some adjustments only to the white clouds in the sky. You could Select Sky, then Intersect with a Luminance mask that selects the white clouds, or alternatively you could Select Sky, then subtract the blue part of the sky using a Color mask. You want to make some adjustments to all parts of the image, except the sky. You could Select Sky, and then Invert the mask. You have an image of a model in a red dress, and you want to adjust the colour of the dress. You could Select Subject, then intersect that mask with a Color mask selecting the reds in the dress.
76
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) Obviously, any selections you make with any of the tools can be adjusted by adding or subtracting with the Brush tool. As with previous versions, you will see little “pins” on the image representing each mask you have created, but now, rather than being simple dots they are different little icons depending upon the type of mask. Given that now you can access these easily in the Masking panel you might choose to turn these off in the Overlay menu (see figure 6) by choosing the Show Pins and Tools option. Both the mask, and each sub-mask have context sensitive menus accessible by clicking the “three dots” to the right of the mask or sub-mask icon. These give you options to Rename, Duplicate, Delete, Invert and Intersect the mask, they are shown in Figure 6.
[Fig 6 – Mask and Sub-mask menus]
The Color and Luminance mask tools probably warrant some further discussion. In both cases you can click the image to select a colour or luminance value or click and drag over the image to select a range of colours or luminance values. You can also hold down the Shift key and click to make additional selections. The Color mask options panel has a Refine slider to widen or narrow the range of colours selected (see Figure 7).
[Fig 7 – Color and Luminance Masking options panels]
The Luminance mask options panel has a Select Luminance slider that has a large bar in it that defines the fully selected area, you can move it left (darker) or right (lighter) to affect the selected area. You can also drag the small handles on the edge of the bar to change its size (to select a bigger or smaller range of luminance values). The lines on either side of the bar that get small triangles under them when you hover the mouse define the feathered area, so move these further away from the central bar to get less severe transitions from selected to unselected, or closer to the central bar for a more severe transition. These new masking capabilities offer very much more power than you had previously in ACR or Lightroom and make it possible for much more precision and accuracy for local adjustments. Andrew Haysom

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
