a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand

Welcome to our February edition of Artists Down Under and Happy Valentine’s Day to all. This month where possible and seeing it is Happy Valentine’s Day soon,I thought I would give you all a double delight per artist and share their love. This month we see lots of achievements and exhibitions starting to happen, so our artists have certainly been creatively busy preparing. Andrew, our Master Photoshop guru, has shared an interesting Photoshop tip for us on “Two Layer Panel Options You May Not Know”. Very interesting and extremely helpful. Maureen has been busy interviewing our own artist, Tracey Perrin. Tracey lives in New Zealand and is a very talented Nature and Bird Photographer. I hope you enjoy what she has shared with you all. The girls from the Redlands Digital Group have given us all a Double Delight as they celebrate their 75th Edition of their “Chinese Series” with the world. Well done girls, hoping to see many more editions to come. Our amazing Featured Artist this month is Karen Waalwyk. Karen has travelled to many remote places on her artistic journey and I just love how she puts the images taken, into her artwork. I am very proud to share some of them with you. Lastly, our Monthly Photographic Artists Challenge. This month the theme was Tall Ships and our artists certainly did not disappoint. I hope you all enjoy what they have created for you. Well, that’s it from me. Stay safe on the roads, take care of each other and look out for those less fortunate around you.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION TWO LAYER PANEL OPTIONS YOU MAY NOT KNOW By Andrew Haysom

A little while ago Adobe introduced a new feature that many users really didn’t like (myself included). They added a small badge in the right-bottom corner of the thumbnails shown in the Layer panel for layer masks and vector masks (see Figure 1).

[Fig 1 – Layer mask badges]

These were designed to enable you to quickly tell whether the thumbnail represented a normal layer mask or a vector mask. However, the icons were so similar, especially when viewed so small, that many people thought they just got in the way and obscured the bottom corner of the thumbnail. Initially there was no way to remove these badges but in the latest versions of Photoshop they have made the badges optional. They can be turned on or off using the “Show layer mask badges” check box in the Layer Panel Options screen, accessed from the flyout menu in the Layer panel (see Figure 2).

36

[Fig 2 – Layer Panel Options]

In the latest versions of Photoshop I believe that by default the badges are not displayed (at least that was the case for me), so if you are someone that liked them, now you know where to turn them back on. If yours are still there and you don’t like them, make sure you have the latest Photoshop version, and go turn them off. Another item found in the same dialog box, that may be of interest, is the Thumbnail Contents option. This can be set to either Layer Bounds or Entire Document. When set to Entire Document every thumbnail takes the shape of your document and the contents of the layer can be seen in their position on the canvas. When set to Layer Bounds each thumbnail only shows the actual contents of that layer and you see a “larger” version of the contents if they are smaller than the whole layer. This can be helpful when you have very small elements on the layers and makes them easier to see and to recognise. Figure 3 shows examples of what the Layer panel might look like with each option. Of course, you can switch between the options whenever you like.

DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS

CHINESE WHISPERS #75 “MILESTONE”

This month Pam and I celebrate a major milestone with our artistic collaboration. This is the 75th consecutive month our joint art has appeared in the ADU magazine. 75 MONTHS - THAT’S 6.25 YEARS. That is just 8 months after the ADU Magazine first appeared to such acclaim. During that time Pam and I have learnt so much from each other. Each challenge presents us with a scenario we individually would not have considered. However, there are two more important aspects that we are both value ... FRIENDSHIP and FUN! As a celebration we decided to both start and finish a collaboration. We gave ourselves an additional challenge. Both Pam and I thank you for your continued support, and we are looking forward to continuing our efforts through 2024. Maureen Maxwell

I started my journey with Sebastian Michaels back in 2015. I was looking for a course to improve my photo editing skills when I stumbled across Photoshop Artistry Fine Art Grunge. I still remember my reaction of ‘Wow!’ to the advertising promo where Sebastian showed how to put together a composite. This I wanted to learn. Little did I realise what lay ahead in the way of friendship and camaraderie that would develop through the Awake, Kaizen and of course the Artists Down Under Group. My enjoyment of photography evolved with my love of travel. I am particularly drawn to wildlife, nature, big landscapes and scenes of daily life. From the time of arriving home from one adventure I would be planning my next escape. In the interim I would spend hours poring over photos and reliving memories. My photoshop creativity is predominantly inspired by my photos or memories of scenes. My approach though is very ad hoc. Sometimes I have a clear idea of what I want to achieve but mostly I experiment with lots of different textures and effects until some thing falls into place that resonates with me. I have found through living the photo artistic life I am increasingly aware of my surroundings and feel more present in the moment. I continually now look at an animal, a flower, the sky, a scene and think how it may be incorporated into an artistic piece. I wonder at what each day may bring. It is as though my eyes have been opened to a world I had not previously been aware of. I set myself three weekly goals: go on an outing, learn something new and do something creative. When I feel uninspired, I pick out an old photo, watch a tutorial or grab my camera and go for a wander. Inevitably I can then sit down open a blank canvas and before I know it the evening will have disappeared as I am absorbed in a new creation. An early Facebook post from Sebastian is one I regularly remind myself of: “How do I become a better photo artist?” “Create art.” “Yeah, but how do I get better?” “Stop overthinking it. Just do it.” “Do what?” “Create art.” “But then what?” “Create more art.” “That’s all there is to it?” “Well … keep learning, obviously.” “And?” “That’s it.” “That’s it?” “Keep learning. Keep creating.” “Yeah, but …” “And have some FUN with it. Whoever has the most fun, wins.” It really is that simple. -Sebastian For me ‘Fun’ is of most importance in the creative journey.

INTERVIEW WITH TRACEY PERRIN By Maureen Maxwell

Thank you, Tracey, for doing this interview. I know our members and other readers will be interested to learn more about you and your art. You live in the most beautiful part of the world in the South Island of New Zealand. This southern island attracts photographers from around the world. It is full of wild scenery and wildlife to inspire any professional and amateur photographer. Photographing the birdlife in NZ seems to be a passion of yours. You also push many of your photographs further to create interesting photo artistic images. WHAT ATTRACTS YOU TO BIRDS, NOT ONLY TO PHOTOGRAPH THEM, BUT ALSO TO CREATE VISUALLY INTERESTING ARTISTIC STORIES? I started following Brook Shaden, which started my journey into creating artistic images. Having always had a love of nature and birds I decided I would start photographing some of the local birdlife here in Canterbury, using the images I captured to create something visually different. Some of my favourite birds to photograph are the Royal Spoonbill and the White Heron, these birds feature a lot in my composites. One of my first creative edits was the Pied Stilt, I loved the strutting pose! When I create an image, I use all my own textures and backgrounds, so I can enter the finished work into competitions. I feel like my style has evolved since I first started creating my composites 3 years ago. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN OTHER PHOTOGRAPHIC GENRES? Over the years I have had many interests in other genres including landscape, still life and children’s portraits. When I get the chance to travel I will often stop and take landscape images. I also have a small home studio where I photograph children dressed up as faeries and mermaids etc.

78

INTERVIEW WITH TRACEY PERRIN (CONT....)

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN CREATIVE, AND HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN DIGITAL PHOTO ARTISTRY? As a child I was alway colouring in and drawing or creating things. I got my first SLR camera in the late 1980s and I delved into creative photography. But it was not until I got my first DSLR (in 2012) and started watching the NZIPP Iris Awards in 2014 that I really became interested in learning how to use photoshop, learning how to create composites through Karen Alsop and other online tutorials over the years.

Graceful

Into The Light

Three Amigos

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR STYLE AND THE TYPES OF MEDIA YOU USE TO DISPLAY YOUR ART. I am not sure I have a set style, as my work keeps evolving so I feel that my style changes with it, but I do like to use my own clouds and textures to add to my composites. Most of my work is displayed online through my facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/TracePerrinArtisticPhotography

and my website

https://traceyperrinartisticphotography.co.nz

WHAT DOES BELONGING TO ARTISTS DOWN UNDER MEAN TO YOU? I love being part of Artists Down Under, there is such an array of creativity in the community. It’s very inspiring seeing what other people are creating in the group.

79

INTERVIEW WITH TRACEY PERRIN (CONT....)

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR ART TAKING YOU IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO? In the next year or two I would like to see more of my work selling, either through online sales or through exhibitions. I am also trying to grow my Faerietastic Photography business. PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR BACKGROUND AND OTHER INTERESTS. I have lived in Christchurch, New Zealand all of my life and raised two children on my own until they left high school. While the children were young I got a Bachelor’s degree as an early childhood teacher and worked for a while in that industry. I later decided to get a Diploma in Photography as my passion for photography has always been part of my life and something I have always wanted to make money from.
