Happy New Year and welcome to our first edition of Artists Down Under for 2024. Well a New Year has arrived, and we are all living in hope for a better and prosperous new year ahead. A lot of people have done it tough over the past 12 months, some having lost loved ones, some struggling to put food on their tables, some falling into a pit of depression. This year, be kind to one another as you never know what the next person is going through. Hug one another, do a kind deed for a stranger, catch up with family and friends and be there for someone that may need you, as you never know when that kind gesture is all that is needed to lift that person up. SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION TWO QUICK TIPS By Andrew Haysom

Two quick tips from me this month, one for Photoshop and one for Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom.

Turn Off Create New Layer When Brushing In a recent update Adobe made a change to Photoshop so that if you try to brush onto a layer you’re not allowed to (e.g. a non-pixel layer like an Adjustment Layer), Photoshop will automatically create a blank layer and your brushstroke will be applied to that new layer. Personally I don’t like this, as more often than not I was meaning to be brushing onto the layer mask and just didn’t have it selected, so the hassle of having to then delete the new layer creates more work for me. So, my tip is, to turn this new feature off and revert to the old behaviour, go into the General tab of Photoshop Settings and turn off the Create New Layer when Brushing check box (see Figure 1).

Reset ACR/Lightroom Settings by Panel This tip works for both Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom. When using ACR or Lightroom to adjust your image, you use the controls/sliders in the various panels like Light, Color, Effects, Color Mixer, Curve etc. If you want to reset any particular panel back to default values, simply hold down the [Alt/Option] key and the panel headings will change into clickable headings with the word “Reset” preceding the panel name (eg Reset Light, Reset Color, Reset Effects, Reset Color Mixer, Reset Curve etc) – see Figure 2.

Click the Reset heading for the panel and the controls within that panel will be reset to their default values.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live? My name is Marie Helyar, and I reside in Wagga Wagga, NSW. I am a retired farmer and business operator, navigating the journey of life through the lens of creativity. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? At the age of 70, I began an extraordinary journey into the world of art, a journey inspired by a lifetime of experiences. My story is deeply intertwined with the land, family, and the resilience of the human spirit. A retired farmer and business operator, with my late husband Robert I shared a profound love for life, history, and the Australian bush. The laughter of kookaburras became our cherished soundtrack. Sadly, in 2018, my life took an unexpected turn with the passing of my husband. The loss left me grappling with depression and anxiety, In the depths of grief, I turned to creativity as a source of solace. My artistic journey commenced with the acquisition of new skills - learning how to use my camera, mastering Photoshop and Lightroom. The initial foray into My Photo Artistic Life in 2017 was interrupted by life’s challenges, Robert’s diagnosis of Prostrate cancer, but a chance encounter with “Elevate Your Art” in 2019 reignited my passion for expression. The turning point came when I transformed a photo of kookaburras fighting over a baby snake. Remembering Robert’s desire to have a painting of these majestic birds, I turned the photo into a masterpiece, marking the start of “The Journey”. With determination and practice, I mastered the intricacies of digital art, using my art pen and tablet to paint each stroke as one would on a physical canvas. I tend to paint on the computer like I would paint on canvas with “Real Paint” I don’t just clone the photo I paint one brush stroke at a time. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I have tried lots of creative crafts, sewing, knitting, quilting, flower arrangement but never art. A teacher in high school told me I had no talent for Art - a statement that stayed with me for decades. And even today I question my ability. The inspiration for my art comes from the laughter of kookaburras, a cherished memory shared with my late husband. The landscapes we explored during our travels, the love of history and the desire to preserve memories through creativity serve as constant sources of inspiration. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? In my digital artistry, I approach the canvas much like a traditional painter, using the mixer brush in Photoshop to paint one stroke at a time. In photo restoration, I focus on breathing new life into old photographs, seeking to preserve the essence of each image. When working with charcoal in Photoshop, I aim to capture the soul of historic buildings or machinery through meticulous strokes.

What does your art mean to you? My art is a multifaceted expression of healing, connection, and preservation. It goes beyond visual representation, serving as emotional connections that bridge the past, present, and future. It’s a testament to the power of creativity to heal and transform lives. Do you think since starting in photo artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Absolutely. Photo artistry has been a therapeutic outlet, helping me navigate the challenges of life. It transformed my perspective on creativity, turning it into a powerful tool for healing. It allowed me to rediscover purpose, resilience, and the joy that comes from artistic expression. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I don’t think there is just a person I draw my inspiration from—rather, life itself. My family, my grandchildren, and my two beautiful dogs, Sandy and Goldie, are constant wellsprings of inspiration. Moreover, my profound love of history serves as a driving force. The ability to transform a simple snapshot or a damaged photograph into a masterpiece is truly inspirational for me. The process of breathing new life into old photographs is particularly impactful. Those forgotten moments, tucked away in dusty boxes, suddenly come to life, becoming timeless treasures that bridge generations. Witnessing the emotional impact of restored photos is immense; families are reunited with their heritage. Nostalgia stirs, triggering conversations that span generations and become catalysts for sharing family stories. It’s a source of inspiration that goes beyond individual figures. It is about capturing the collective essence of life and history. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? Looking forward, I hope to continue expanding my artistic repertoire. I aspire to delve deeper into preserving memories through photo restoration and capturing the essence of history with my charcoal drawings. My art is not just a reflection of the past but a bridge to the future, and I am excited to see where this creative odyssey leads me. My journey is only just beginning from the depths of loss and depression to a beacon of creativity and healing is a testament to the enduring power of art. With each stroke, click, and restoration, I hope to not only transform pixels but leave an indelible mark on the canvas of time, proving that indeed, the creative spirit has the strength to heal and illuminate even the darkest corners of the heart.

INTERVIEW WITH TRISH HOSKIN By Maureen Maxwell

Trish, you’ve been a member of Artists Down Under since the beginning in 2017. You’ve also attended several of our annual gatherings until Covid put a stop to them. Over these years you’ve developed a range of styles. We have seen many of your art works in our Artists Down Under monthly magazine. A recurring theme with your art has been your travels. Many other works have a beautiful, dreamy look to them. Thank you, Trish for doing this interview. I know our members and other readers will be interested to learn a little more about you and your art. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN CREATIVE, AND HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN PHOTO ARTISTRY? Interestingly enough I have always liked art and all things artistic but never thought of myself as indulging. I did art at high school and art history as a matric subject for 5 years but didn’t ever feel close to it. I had done a lot of craft like decoupage and stamping etc., but it wasn’t till 2000 when travelling to England that I wanted to learn watercolour. I found Tony Smibert, a really wellknown Tasmanian artist and travelled there for a week to do a course with him. I had been doing night classes at a local group for a year and yet learnt more in the first day with Tony than I had in the whole year. Tony is a big aficionado on Turner and even went to the Tate in London to really study how he worked. I then joined an art group and moved from watercolours to pastel, acrylics, and coloured pencil work. I felt a bit stifled so ended up moving to photography. Again I felt I couldn’t be the perfect photographer and that there were millions of those out there anyway. I was looking for something and stumbled upon Sebastian Michaels and it was like a lightbulb being switched on as they say. It just resonated with me. I had a steep learning curve to work out even the basics of Photoshop to be able to create anything near what I was satisfied with. Being on a design team for a couple of designers for a few years also broadened my scope a lot.

PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR STYLE AND THE TYPES OF MEDIA YOU USE TO DISPLAY YOUR ART. I guess I have a few styles. Firstly it started off with a bit of copying the crowd – dreamy figures and mysterious females etc., and again felt I needed to find my own way. I love architecture and buildings and having travelled to beautiful places like Venice and London and even our own Tasmania and my own lovely Adelaide has given me a wealth of material to craft with. I use Photoshop, apps on the iPad and even gelli printing to complete pieces. I often photograph these to blend in with my pieces. I generally create cards or canvasses as final pieces and have been lucky enough to sell and exhibit across Australia and UK, US, and Greece. As mentioned, I think my most favourite genre is using architecture to work with. It might be the image of a whole building, a wall, a window, or just a façade that will trigger an idea and I just go from there. I love blending layers and colours, stains, marks, and other images to complete a piece.

IN RECENT TIMES WE HAVE SEEN SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MANY FIELDS. IN OUR WORLD OF DIGITAL ART THERE HAVE BEEN MANY DISCUSSIONS AND OPINIONS EXPRESSED. I THINK OUR READERS WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS TREND? Being in the computer industry AI fascinates me, and my company develops with it to provide our customers with easier ways to do their business. In terms of art I am also fascinated with it but also torn with how it can be used for not so honest purposes. I have been playing with it to be additives to my travel pictures having just returned from London to experience all things Christmas. Creating little elves, Santas and decorations etc. I have been using Discord and Midjourney and now see where a lot of the designers can create their kits from. I would always advise where part of my work is done with AI rather than claiming it for my own.

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR ART TAKING YOU IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO? I’ve taken a bit of a back seat in promoting my art in the last couple of years having done the markets, fairs, exhibitions, and websites etc. I’ve had some good successes, but it takes a lot of time, effort and money to keep promoting and producing bodies of work for sale. I would like to review this in the next couple of years as I near retirement to perhaps look to creating my own digital kits as an income stream. I’m always investigating ideas. PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF, YOUR BACKGROUND AND OTHER IN TERESTS. So I live in lovely Adelaide and whilst this will always be home I adore travel. I’ve been to Europe 3 or 4 times, US about 6 times, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong especially a lot. My favourite city besides Venice as you might have guessed is London having just returned for the 10th visit. I am an R & D Manager for a software development house, so this is a very busy and demanding job, so travel and art are my havens. I love my job but can’t wait to retire to do more of what I really connect with.
