Welcome everyone to the July edition of Artists Down Under. For all of you out there that are suffering from the cold weather, you will be pleased to know that the winter solstice has now passed and it is all downhill till the warmer weather is back .. yay. As life slowly gets back to normal, our artists are beginning to get back outside, taking amazing photos and sparking their imaginations back to create for you some inspiring images.
Trish Hoskin shares with us a very inspiring interview from one of our very own artists, Margie O’Hara, along with some of her very talented images. Everyone’s favourite, Andrew Haysom delights us with another of his Photoshop tutorials, this month on creating Luminosity Masks and Selections. We have another fun edition of the Redlands Digital Artists Group’s “Chinese Whispers” series for you all to enjoy.
We have more of our very talented Artists Achievements to browse through. This month’s Photographic Challenge is titled “Broken”, so our artists share with you their renditions of this challenge. And lastly I am proud to introduce you to our Feature Artist this month, Carolyn Dakin from New Zealand. Carolyn has some awesome images that she has shared with us for you all to enjoy.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION CREATING LUMINOSITY MASKS AND SELECTIONS By Andrew Haysom
A Luminosity Mask or Luminosity Selection is a mask or selection based on the brightness of the pixels in the image. A Luminosity Mask often looks like a black and white version of the image. If you don’t have a Luminosity Masking add-in or action set, the easiest place to manually generate these from is the Channels panel which shows black and white images that represent the luminosity of the entire image (RGB) as well as of the individual Red, Green and Blue channels of the image. [Figure 1 – Channels Panel] Here are some useful keystrokes that will be used in the creation of the Luminosity Selections/Masks, and that are useful when working with them. Action Keystroke (Mac) Keystroke (Win) Create selection Cmd+click Ctrl+click Add to selection Shift+Cmd+click Shift+Ctrl+click Subtract from selection Opt+Cmd+click Alt+Ctrl+click Intersect selection Opt+Shift+Cmd+click Shift+Ctrl+click Select all Cmd+A Ctrl+A Deselect Cmd+D Ctrl+D Invert selection Shift+Cmd+I Shift+Ctrl+I Hide/unhide selection Cmd+H Ctrl+H Enable/disable mask Shift+click Shift+click View layer mask Opt+click Alt+click

[Figure 1 – Channels Panel]
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
Creating Luminosity Masks In the Channels panel, create a selection based on the RGB channel. Save this selection as a channel and rename it “Lights1”. Invert the selection, save this selection as a channel and rename it “Darks1”. Create a selection based on the Lights1 channel, then intersect it with itself. Save this selection as a channel and rename it “Lights2”. Intersect this Lights2 selection with itself, save this selection as a channel and rename it “Lights3”. Create a selection based on the Darks1 channel, then intersect it with itself. Save this selection as a channel and rename it “Darks2”. Intersect this Darks2 selection with itself, save this selection as a channel and rename it “Darks3”. To create midtone masks we first select the entire image (select all), and then subtract the Lights and Darks masks. So a “Midtones1” mask would be created by subtracting the Lights1 and Darks1 selections from the entire selection. The “Midtones2” mask would be created by subtracting the Lights2 and Darks2 selections from the entire selection. Obviously, you can extend the number of Lights, Darks and Midtones masks to as many levels as you require. Usually you will not want to create all the masks above and leave them in your file as they occupy a lot of space, but if you don’t have a Luminosity Masking tool then knowing how to create them manually is very useful. Luminosity masks are invaluable for applying adjustments to only certain parts of your image. Luminosity selections are invaluable for exposure blending and selective dodging and burning. If you intend to use them though, I highly recommend purchasing a Luminosity Masking add-in, and my favourite is Lumenzia. You can read a summary and review of Lumenzia in a previous article on my website, it contains links to the Lumenzia website. https://andrewhaysom.myportfolio.com/lumenzia

BEWARE! Working with a friend in creating a collaborative art work can lead to a very unpredictable outcome and artistic journey. However, it is fun, and rewarding, plus it challenges you in ways you would never have expected. Pam Henderson
STAGE 2
Pam started our efforts this month and had me shaking my head for some days. With time running out, I sat at my computer and told myself to ‘just get started and see where it takes you’. My muse took over and the final image turned out completely different to what I had planned. If you get the opportunity to work with a friend or colleague, both Pam and I recommend this as a fun way to expand your creativity. ENJOY! Maureen Maxwell

dakincarolyn.myportfolio.com https://artistsdownunder.com.au/artists-1/carolyn-dakin/
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in a small village in the beautiful deep south of New Zealand. Like many Australians, I have travelled widely and lived in many places around the world, including England, Papua New Guinea, Australia and now New Zealand. I have always been fascinated by the way a camera lens focuses my view of the world, and captures a moment in time. As a child, I spent many hours in the darkroom bringing images to life, and manipulating them, which really captivated my imagination. My artistic career was interrupted by my other passion, medicine, and I have enjoyed a career as a specialist doctor. I am very fortunate now to be able to spend time again on photography and producing art. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I learned about the Sebastian Michaels Photoshop Artistry course through the beautiful images of a friend on Facebook. It was so exciting to discover this creative expansion, and to learn how to create more painterly and imaginative images. I am so grateful for this, and for the way this has allowed me to develop as an artist. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I love to tell stories, and believe that story telling is at the heart of how we learn and communicate. I especially enjoy whimsical pieces and surreal art. I am so grateful to be a member of the Artists Down Under and Awake groups of wonderful artists, whose art inspires me daily. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I generally think of a story or image I want to create, and then take the photographs to make it. Sometimes images take a different turn, and sometimes I need to wait to develop the skills to complete them. What does your art mean to you? My art is an important part of myself that I have greatly missed, without realising until recently. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? I am inspired by a variety of visual art, but especially love the wit of Rene Magritte and the passion of Max Dupain. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I have folders full of images from artists that inspire me. I love the city scapes of Barbara Mierau-Klein, the multiple exposure photos of Paul Vanhaute and the paintings of Marta Wiley. Recently, an artist friend pointed me towards the illustrations of Bob Peak. Four completely different styles, so who knows which way I’ll end up going. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I am excited to learn how to better translate the images in my mind into reality. I want to create images that are thought provoking, share ideas and illustrate the beauty of our natural world.

MARGIE O’HARA INTERVIEW By Trish Hoskin
Hi All, In this article, we get to meet Maggie O’Hara of New Media Art who specializes in Photography and digital collage. Maggie is self-taught and only started learning when she signed up to Awake and Photoshop Artistry groups and realizes that this has really changed her artistic life in ways so amazing, she can’t explain. Maggie has been working on a series of extraordinary pieces and she feels that the ladies have taken over her life, and doesn’t have time to develop any other styles because they are so popular and she will just keep creating them until they are no longer in demand. Currently in progress is a series called - “Faces of the Forest” which will form the images of Positive - Self Love - Empowerment affirmation cards. Featuring bright and uplifting contemporary designs, these affirmation cards provide the perfect daily inspiration to keep you centred. The cards have a quote for each day for a month. Every card has been designed and infused with the intention of love and joy. The cards are inspired by nature, botanics and the beauty of the human face. The artworks have been inspired by Maggie’s travels from around the world, incorporating flora and fauna from different countries. The artworks have butterflies which signify loved ones from the other side.

Face Of The Rainforest
MARGIE O’HARA INTERVIEW (CONT....) The inspiration behind the series came about when Maggie entered one of the images “Face of the Rainforest” in the Townville Art Society End of Year awards and won “People’s Choice Award”. It created a lot of interest and people were fascinated to learn how it was created. Maggie explained that it took between 20-30 layers to get the end result. Because of the huge interest it created Maggie was asked if she wanted to exhibit more. Maggie then set about creating “Faces of the Vault” and exhibited in November through to December 2019 with 12 limited edition 30cm x 30cm prints. She was delighted that 9/12 images sold. During the same time period she printed a 90cm x 90cm canvas “Fleur” and exhibited her in another Regional Gallery. “Fleur” sold on opening night. Three 90cm x 90cm have since gone to Sydney and people tell Maggie that the ladies make them feel happy.

The second set of the ladies Maggie has been working on is to enhance how they make people feel and she has invoked love, beauty and confidence into each piece as she created them to really set the intention for the viewer. These were to be created in a secluded castle in Ireland at an artist’s residency but unfortunately the Corona virus got in the way of those amazing plans. So, she is creating them at home trying to invoke some Celtic mystery by Internet research. As you can see from the images the works are really colourful and beautiful. Such a pity that the opportunity to be an artist in residence overseas has been scuttled with everything that has been happening around the world now. But as I am sure you all are – with a bit of quiet time, a laptop and power we can try to put aside the worries and create wonderful art. Thanks, so much Maggie for sharing your beautiful art with us.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis Art 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
