Welcome to our June edition of Artists Down Under. What a crazy past month it has been but what a relief to know that we are all slowly allowed to re-enter the world of socialisation again - at a distance of course. Lockdown has been great in a way for our artists, giving them time to let their imagination juices flow freely without the guilt of having to get up to do other things and what a treat they have been able to bring you for this month-s edition. This month I am delighted to share with you two stories about our own artists’ exciting adventures and the amazingly beautiful images that accompany their journeys. Special thanks to Trish Hoskin, Christina Brunton and Ilona Abou-Zolof for organising these articles for us all to enjoy. Andrew Haysom shares another of his very helpful Photoshop hints with us all. The Redlands Digital Artists Group have been hard at it again, delighting us with another image in their “Chinese Whispers” series.

With all the lockdown rules in place, our artists have still been very successful with their achievements in Australia and overseas competitions, a huge congratulations to them all in these very trying times. I thought with our Photographic Artists challenge this month that it might be nice to host a virtual “Tea Party”, so I asked all our Artists to send in their images so that we could all enjoy a nice cup of tea together and they certainly didn’t disappoint. I am proud to introduce to you this month for our Featured Artist section, one of our newer members, Paul Neary.

Louise Smith - Flamingos

I think you will all agree that Paul is a very talented artist and I hope you all enjoy his work as much as I do. Well that’s it from me this month, I hope you all start to enjoy a little more freedom, but remember to please stay safe at all times. Pam

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SIMPLE SKETCH EFFECT By Andrew Haysom

There are many ways to create simple pencil-like sketch effects from photographs in Photoshop, including a number of commercially available filters, but here’s one way that I think creates a nice, and variable sketch effect. 1.

Duplicate the original photo layer.

2. Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and desaturate the image by pulling the Saturation slider left to -100. 3. Click on the duplicate image layer created in step 1, and change the blend mode to Color Dodge. 4. Invert the layer by pressing [Ctrl/Cmd+I]. Now your image should look pretty much like a blank white page. 5. Optionally, convert this layer to a Smart Object, this will allow you to easily vary the amount of blur applied in the next step. 6. Use Filter / Blur / Gaussian Blur and adjust the amount of blur to give you the desired sketch effect. 7.

You can add other adjustment layers such as Levels, Posterize and Threshold at the top of the layer stack to further tweak the sketch effect.

8. If you would like to apply some of the original photo’s colour, duplicate the original photo layer, drag it to the top of the layer stack and change the blend mode to Color.

Last month Pam gave me a challenge that was minimal in the extreme. That became quite a challenge for me but was fun to take further. I decided to go to the other end of ‘extreme’ this month and gave her a challenge that could be said to be complete. It was created as a Bone Yard full of skeletons in front of what could have been a creepy mansion, and that is the direction I thought Pam would take. But no, she surprised me - yet again. She turned it into a glowing Rave Party full of happy dancing skeletons. I was fortunate to be visiting family living in New Orleans at Halloween time. My goodness, I’ve never seen anything like it. Some of the houses were so highly decorated and, to my mind, very creepy and blood thirsty. It was so much fun and enlightening to be there at that time, and I think Pam has picked up on the theme beautifully. Enjoy - as always!

KAREN WAALWYK ADVENTURE Trish Hoskin

Mongolia Oct, 2018 Pictures of Mongolia, depicting vast, open plains and isolated Gers, are images that have long been with me. In October 2018 I finally had the opportunity to visit. It soon became apparent to me that a three week holiday fell well short of being able to explore this amazing country, so I decided to spend most of my time in the Alti Mountains in west Mongolia. This region shares borders with Russia, China and Kazakhstan.

Olgii

Malchin Peak Basecamp

My trip started with a flight to Olgii and then a drive to Altai Tavn Bogd National Park. This park not only has beautiful natural wonders in the mountains and lakes, but also cultural history including ancient rock carvings or petroglyphs and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The aerial views from my flight to Olgii gave a wonderful introduction into the region. Arriving in the afternoon, following a delay in departing the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, we were late in setting out on our drive to the national park. Departing at around 7pm this gave me my first introduction into the skill of my driver Altinbek, in navigating difficult terrain through the dark. I then experienced the remarkable hospitality of local nomads who opened their door to us, made tea at 1:00 am in the morning and shared their communal home for the night. The next day I set off with my guide, Bakhitgul, for the 16km hike to Malchin Peak base camp. Ground squirrels kept us company and the scenery was of course spectacular. The next two nights were spent camping and gave us the opportunity to explore Potanin glacier, which at a length of 14km, is the longest in Mongolia. Our second night in tents was long and stormy and brought the first snow of the coming winter. The scene in the morning was picturesque.

Malchin Peak Snow

Ger At Khoton Lake

Leaving base camp, we hiked back through the snow and met up with our driver in the early afternoon. It was now off to Khoton Lake. A long day of driving but my eyes stayed glued to the scenery and I marveled at how Altinbek found his way. Arriving late in the day we then encountered problems finding accommodation. It seemed most of the nomads had moved on, limiting available gers to sleep in. Finally a family took us in for the night and I was given some floor space to crawl into, with room only for me and my sleeping bag, between two other solo travelers. Several days were then spent enjoying the generosity of Kazakh nomads, visiting the petroglyphs, relaxing lakeside and generally experiencing local life. Finally, the event I had been waiting for and main reason I chose the Alti mountains to visit, dawned – The Golden Eagle festival.

Pectroglyphs

Camel Race

This Golden Eagle festival is a two-day event held annually in celebration of century old Kazakh traditions. Nomads may travel days on horseback to compete in various competitions which showcase their skills. These include a camel race, archery, Tiyn Teru (a skillful, timed horseback race to pick up a coin or flag from the ground), Kokpar (tug of war over a goat’s carcass whilst on horseback) and Kyz Kuar (a woman attempting to whip a man while racing on horseback).

47

KAREN WAALWYK ADVENTURE (Cont ...) The highlight of the festival though is the Eagle Hunters competition which spans both days. Calling the eagle from the mountain to land on the hunter’s arm occurred on the first day. Of around 100 competitors only 26 qualified for the second round on day 2, which was calling the eagle to take a lure. In addition, there was a market with traditional handcrafts, gers where local food could be purchased and Kazakh throat singing amongst other entertainment. It was an amazing and exciting two days!

Eagle Festival

Following the Eagle Festival, I was then fortunate to spend a few nights with a family of Eagle Hunters. One of the sons had won the Kokpar and Tiyn Teru events at the recent festival and had also previously represented Mongolia internationally in the Nomad Games. There I was shown how they trained their eagles as well as experiencing daily life including dawn milking, the making of cheese which occurred day long, the butchering of livestock and subsequent cooking for dinner, plus copious cups of tea along the way. I never anticipated the extraordinary range of experiences that were waiting for me when I set out on this adventure. And an adventure it was! I have a wonderful array of memories that will always live with me, together with a desire to return and further explore this beautiful country.

SILENT ESCAPE 73

Meet your artist Paul Neary Rouse Hill (Sydney) Australia

Website :

74

http://www.artistsdownunder.com.au/artist-4/paul-neary/

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Rouse Hill on the North West fringe of Sydney. I’m married with two daughters, one in high school and the other in her first year of University. For my day job I’m a coach driver. I also do some part time photography work with a niche speciality of poker and mah-jong games. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have used Lightroom for years. One day I saw an email from Phil Steele (a friend of Sebastian’s) pointing me towards Sebastian’s Artistry course. I had always seen Photoshop as a tool for retouching and improving photographs. It had never occurred to me that I could use it to create art. I enrolled in the course and did nothing for a few years, until mid-2019 when I got the urge to release my inner artist. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I enjoy taking photos and creating art. If people enjoy the images I create that’s all the inspiration I need. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I don’t really have a fixed approach to creating my art. I’m less than 12 months into my learning so right now I’m still developing a style. While I’m happy with some of the art I’m creating, I feel that I’m limited by my skill level in being able to turn my vision into reality. For now I’m focusing on learning the skills to enable me to achieve the look I’m aiming for. What does your art mean to you? Art is a hobby that gives me pleasure and the satisfaction from producing images that others enjoy. I try not to make it any more meaningful than that. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? For now I’ve been relying on my extensive library of photos as the starting point of my art. Over time I’m gaining an understanding of what photos translate well into art. This is making me more deliberate in taking photos specifically with the intention of producing artwork from that photo. It’s given me a different perspective on the world as I walk around with my camera. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I have folders full of images from artists that inspire me. I love the city scapes of Barbara Mierau-Klein, the multiple exposure photos of Paul Vanhaute and the paintings of Marta Wiley. Recently, an artist friend pointed me towards the illustrations of Bob Peak. Four completely different styles, so who knows which way I’ll end up going. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? Right now, I’m just focusing on developing my skills as an artist. Who knows where the journey will take me.

SOUTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE AND MEETING AUGUST NAUDE AND ATHOL MURRAY PHILLIPS By Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton

In February 2020 Ilona Abou-Zolof, Christina Brunton, Lindie Kolver and Frank Kolver went for a three week adventure to South Africa. This was Lindie and Frank’s homeland although they had lived in Australia for many years now. They visit there often and wanted to show it to us as we had loved a previous trip to Namibia so much. We soon flew to beautiful Cape Town. Cape Town is a very relaxed city, with beautiful beaches, beautiful countryside and beautiful people. We visited Stellenbosch, Franshoek & local wineries in the mountain area surrounding Cape Town which had such beautiful landscapes. Everything seems to be so peaceful. We spent quite some time in the gardens taking photos and chatting to the gardeners who gave us beautiful roses whilst we talked to them. After the beautiful wineries we visited the Greenpoint Flower markets. The people at the markets are as colourful as the flowers. We drove up to Lion’s Head to check out the paragliding, on to Blaauwbergstrand for coffee and to watch the hang-gliding. Close to where we were staying was a tennis stadium where a charity doubles tournament was played between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Bill Gates and a South African business man. Followed by a singles match between Federer and Nadal.

SOUTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE (Cont ...) Cape Town has beautiful beaches. We spent some time watching the families and children enjoying the cool water. Apparently, the water in Cape Town is much colder than the water around our beaches. It didn’t stop the kids having fun. We also saw many penguins. Then on to Bo-Kaap (Upper Cape) which used to be called District 6 before the residents were evicted and given housing elsewhere. That was during Apartheid. There was great unrest about the decision. The residents returned some years later (legally) and were reunited with their original homes which are all very colourful. Now the real fun begins - Game Parks. We did three: Tshukudu Safari Lodge, Kruger National Park and Elephant Plains (our favourite).

We arrived at the Tshukudu Safari Lodge, just outside Hoedspruit and went on our first game drive to find some animals. We did see a Lynx (Caracal) and a Cheetah, Lions, Impalas, Zebra, Giraffe and Gnu. The birds were staying out of the wind. A Black-backed Jackal couple have been scavenging at the baby Zebra kill. Our last game drive in Tshukudu before moving on to the next adventure. We saw lots of different animals, but we have not spotted the Leopard yet.

SOUTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE (Cont ...) Lindie and Frank are keen bird photographers and they taught us to look out for birds as well as for the other animals. This way you will never run out of models. There were Tawny Eagles, purple Rollers, European and Lilac Breasted Rollers, BeeEaters, Woodlands Kingfishers, Cape Glossy Starlings, Brown Snake Eagles, a Bennet’s Woodpecker, Hamerkops, a variety of hornbills and many more.

We had many close encounters with elephants. One wanted to move us out of the way and the other didn’t let us pass, he blocked the road for quite some time. It is such a wonderful feeling when you get so close to the wild animals. Sometimes it gets a bit too close, especially with the young elephant bulls. They want to show off and protect their territory. We saw a lot of young animals, probably about 2 months old, so we were there at a great time as we hoped to see babies. January/February is a nice time to see some babies.

SOUTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE (Cont ...) We spent some time at Lake Panic Hide which had lots of bird life, insects and water plants. It was a very relaxing way to photograph. Later we were off for a game drive. Some animals (like people) are prettier than others, but all serve a purpose. An ugly hyena was retreating into the water to get out of the Painted Wolves’ way and then sat down right in the middle of the water. The African Elephant is majestic. We had some moments where the young elephant bull came really close to us. Another one came across us on a morning walk, thankfully our passionate guide got us all out of it safely whilst he stood his ground between the elephant and us retreating away. Our dream was to get shots of the leopard up in a tree and it was so cool when we came across one. This beautiful leopard posed for us for quite a long time and we saw many more leopards over the next few days as well. Absolutely amazing!!!

SOUTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE (Cont ...) When we knew we would be travelling to South Africa, we made plans to catch up with two legends from our ‘AWAKE Photo Artistic Life’ group, August Naude and Athol Murray Phillips plus their wives (Jolanda and Shirley). I know many of you AWAKE participants would love to meet them. Ilona and I sent them silly photos of ourselves so they would be able to recognise us when we met them in the restaurant. Well luckily we all were able to recognise one another and it was just like meeting old friends and we talked, laughed and swapped stories about creating, etc. It was also August’s birthday, so it was quite a wonderful celebration as well. The time sure flew, whilst we were having fun and too soon it was time to go. We are very pleased we caught up with them. The very next day we flew back to Australia, so it was a great way to end our holiday.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn

As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis Art 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research

When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
