a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Welcome everyone as we celebrate a milestone with this our 50th edition of Artists Down Under. It all began back in April 2017 when our first edition kicked off. No one would have thought that our magazine would be so popular and we would have made it this far. A special thank you to Athalie Taylor who had the dream of creating this magazine for our artists, and to all the team in the background, helping to get each edition ready to publish. A very special thank you to our proof reader, Colin Campbell, who has to put up with my silly spelling mistakes each and every month, to Andrew Haysom who kindly dedicates time each month writing his awesome Photoshop Tips, to Trish Hoskins for her amazing interviews with Designers from around the world and to all our very talented artists who without you this magazine would not exist. One other person I know that everyone of our artists would personally like to thank and that is our teacher and mentor, Sebastian Michaels, without you none of this would exist. I hope you enjoy this special milestone edition and I look forward to sharing our artists amazing images in the next fifty editions. Stay safe and take care of each other. Pam

DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS
CHINESE WHISPERS #42 “THE FAIRY BOWER” Apart from the pleasure of working together each month, Pam and I enjoy the challenges, and the freedom, to take these images in any direction we choose. We have no rules, except to use our imaginations and artistic skills. As we celebrate the publication of our 50th edition of the ADU magazine, I’ve realised that Pam and I have been collaborating for 40 of those editions which is yet another achievement within our ADU environment. This collaboration is not something either of us would have anticipated in the early days of our Photo Artistic Journey, but it has given both of us a lot of pleasure. The Fairy Bower represents the safe and happy place that the ADU group is for our artists. We hope you enjoy our efforts too! Maureen

Meet your artist Hemant Kogekar Sydney, NSW Australia

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in the Sydney suburb of Lindfield with my wife. We have been living in Lindfield since 1987. I have always been interested in travel and photography. It was mostly with a range finder camera. I did not know a lot about processing or composition at that time. A few years ago, when looking at a friend’s travel photobook, I noticed that her photos were much better than mine. I realised that I needed to become a better photographer to make my travel photos more memorable. I bought a new Olympus mirrorless camera in 2014 and also joined a couple of local camera clubs. Thus, the photography journey began. Being in a club opened my eyes to good photography. I bought Lightroom, then Photoshop and the learning continued. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? One of the clubs I belong to is Northside Creative Photography club, however, I was not very creative. I first came across the Black and White photo artistry course about 4 years ago. This opened a whole new way of processing images and presenting art. My initial efforts were limited to the use of textures and other basics. From then on, I moved to the Photo Artistry course and then last year signed up for the Awake course. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Before lockdown, travel provided the most inspiration for my photography. We used to travel regularly, and I also did a couple of photo trips. But I often find interesting opportunities during everyday encounters such as walking in the local area, or in the CBD or seeing creations of other artists. I did a course with Pamela Pauline just before the lockdown. I liked what she did with natural elements such as trees, leaves and birds. I did a series of images using these techniques. The Awake course gave me a deeper insight into how other artists put together their images. Also, during lockdown there were many opportunities to see presentations by well known photographers and digital artists. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? The various courses and photo artistry training has influenced and inspired me. They have showed me new approaches that I could use. I am not set on one approach for my work. I like to try different styles and approaches in my art. I did a series using blur, painterly effects and I am now trying compositions. I do not enjoy early morning hikes to sunrise shoots or have the patience to wait for the special shot. Instead, I like using creativity and some post-processing skills to make the images stand out more. What does your art mean to you? I get great satisfaction when I am able to successfully complete a piece of art. Post retirement, photography has given me a hobby that I can invest as much or as little time as I like. For me, having come from an engineering /technology background, making creative art is quite an exciting challenge. I can see my art improving over the time and I am happy with that.
51
Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Since starting my photo artistry journey, I think I have now more freedom and confidence to take risks in creating art. I am more willing to try different techniques or styles. Some are successful and others aren’t. But there is such a wide array of styles, approaches and techniques explained in the courses, that there are always new and exciting possibilities. My work is getting better and has matured. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I take inspiration from many artists and photographers. Wonderful photography is very inspira tional. I am also inspired by what I see other members of the photo clubs and members of Facebook groups create. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I don’t have a special goal for my photography or art. As long as I keep learning and trying something new, I will be satisfied. I want to continue to create art and travel (when the borders open again).

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION EDIT FADE By Andrew Haysom
The Edit Fade command in Photoshop is particularly useful, and not terribly well known. It is used to adjust (fade) the result of the last operation you performed. For example, you can adjust (fade) the last brush-stroke you performed, or the last filter you applied, or the last image adjustment you made. It basically allows you to change the opacity of that operation from 100% downwards thereby fading the strength of that operation. When using the Edit Fade command to adjust a filter or and adjustment it is equivalent to performing that filter or adjustment on a duplicate layer and adjusting the opacity. I have to admit, the duplicate layer method is my preferred way for the above, but I find Edit Fade very useful when re-touching and also when dodging and burning. When performing these functions, using Edit Fade to adjust the last brush stroke can give very precise results. Sometimes it can be a good technique to slightly overdo the brush-stroke and then fade it back to precisely where you want it. Please note that the Edit Fade command is only available immediately after the operation you want to fade, as soon as you perform another action the opportunity to fade the previous one is lost. To use this command simply choose Fade from the Edit menu (or use the Shift+Cmd+F (Mac) Shift+Ctrl+F (Windows) keystrokes. If the last operation performed is not “fadeable” the menu option will be greyed out, otherwise the operation to be adjusted will be shown in the menu title (see Figure 1).
[Fig 1 – Edit Fade menu]
64
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
The Fade dialog is shown (see Figure 2). Make sure the Preview check box is ticked so that you can see your adjustment live, then adjust the Opacity slider to the desired amount to get your adjustment just how you want it. Press OK when finished.
[Fig 2 – Fade dialog]
Another very similar capability is available in Photoshop if you choose to apply adjustments and filters to a SmartObject layer. If you do this you will know that the Filters and Adjustments appear underneath the SmartObject. You will notice that each Filter or Adjustment has a small icon to the right of it (see Figure 3).
[Fig 3 – Layer Panel Filter Blending Options]
65
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
Double-click this icon to open the Blending Options dialog (see Figure 4).
[Fig 4 – Blending Options dialog]
This dialog is almost identical to the Fade dialog. Slide the opacity slider to adjust the effect of the chosen adjustment/filter. That’s it for this article, but I just want to re-iterate that, for me, the most useful and powerful use of these commands is to use Fade on individual brush strokes whilst re-touching or dodging and burning. It gives you very good levels of control. I imagine it may also work well when using the Mixer Brush (but this is something I don’t really use).

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis
Art
by Margaret Kalms
50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
