a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand
Hi all and welcome to another monthly edition of Artists Down Under. Another month has passed and we are now on the countdown until the festive season begins and the hot weather joins us. Christmas decorations are now on display and for sale so this can only mean that Santa is not far away from his yearly visit, which I think we are all definitely looking forward to this year, I know I am. I set this month’s Artists Challenge with a moon theme, and our artists certainly did not disappoint with the images they sent in, I hope you enjoy them. The Redlands Digital Artists Group had a bit of Spring fun this month with their newest image in their Chinese Whispers series. Andrew Haysom gives us a few tips on fixing a very annoying Photoshop behaviour in this month’s Photoshop Tutorial.
Trish Hoskin had the pleasure of interviewing a very talented artist, Charlene Maginn. I am sure you will all love reading this one. Our Feature Artist this month is our own Photoshop Guru Andrew Haysom. I am delighted to share with you his amazing images and story. Lastly I am delighted to share with you the achievements of our artists over the past month, they have all done an amazing job.
Denise McDermott - Dandelion Drop
I hope you all enjoy this edition of Artists Down Under. Until next month, stay safe everyone and take care of each other. Pam

CHINESE WHISPERS #36 “SPRING AND SUMMER”
STAGE 2
Maureen Maxwell
We are experiencing a beautiful Spring in the Southern Hemisphere with a wonderful display of spring foliage. Our gardens are looking wonderful and the birds are enjoying all the food that is around. Summer isn’t too far away when we will see a lot of changes throughout the country. In the north we’ll have very hot and humid weather and it will be time to head to the beaches (and check the air con). In the south it will be quite warm, and at times hot, but they don’t have the humidity of the sub-tropics.

Pam and I hope you enjoy our collaborations each month as it gives us much pleasure to do this type of creation. Maureen Maxwell

Meet your artist Andrew Haysom Melbourne, VIC Australia
44
Website :

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I was born in England, my family emigrating to Australia when I was 10 years old and was brought up around Geelong. I met my wife Adrienne while studying at Melbourne University and we’ve been happily married for 38 years and have two grown children. We have lived in the northern suburbs of Melbourne all our married lives. I have been retired now for two years after a career in IT with a large multi-national company. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I took up photography in April 2011 after buying my first DSLR. I am one of those people who tends to get a bit obsessed with learning every possible thing there is to learn when I become interested in something, and photography, and learning about it, and improving my images, became a bit of an obsession. That led to Photoshop, which became an even bigger obsession, as a long-term IT person, I was very taken with the power of this piece of software. I saw Sebastian’s Photoshop Artistry and Creative Black and White courses and bought both, more with the idea of improving my Photoshop skills, than getting into digital artistry. Like many others, for all of my life I have never thought that I had an artistic bone in my body, and all of a sudden, using my photos I had an outlet for some artistic creativity. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I am inspired by the photography and art of many other people. I am a keen member of the Flickr community where I see photographic inspiration every day, but there are a few people who have moved me especially and influenced my photographic direction. Photographically I have two major “subject” inspirations, the first is nature and wildlife with a special interest in birds. Not only does getting out into nature, even if it’s just my local park, clear the head and mind, but the challenge of photographing birds, especially small ones, is particularly challenging and I enjoy that challenge. Secondly, I love to record the wonderful street art of our city, but this is more about recording the beautiful work of our many talented artists as it can be very transient and short-lived. That said, the beautiful art created by the talented street artists constantly surprises and inspires me. I am inspired by the digital art created by our ADU group, and have made a few very close friends through membership of the group – I am forever grateful for Athalie’s drive to create the group, and for the ongoing work of our current editor Pam, and others like Mary, Julie and Maureen with the Zooms to keep the group active. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I have a reasonably well defined, but always evolving, workflow for processing my photographs, but for my digital art I rarely seem to have an idea that ends up looking anything like the original idea, so perhaps evolutionary is one way to describe it. I tend to just play around in Photoshop, which is half the fun in my opinion, and try to stop when I get somewhere I like. I prefer to use my own photos and elements in my work, rather than stock or course material, but will often use photos provided to me by a very good friend of her daughter, and these pieces always mean something special to me because of that.
45
What does your art mean to you? My photography and digital art are a creative outlet that I just did not have for most of my life. I think of myself as first a photographer, second as a Photoshop junkie and thirdly as bit of a digital artist, but I know that my digital art is not near the level of some others. So, my photography is my main outlet and really, the digital art is just an extension of that, a way to extend the possibilities of my photography. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? It definitely has, partly from the motivational parts of Sebastian’s Awake course, partly from the support given by this group, but finding an artistic outlet, and an artistic streak that I never thought existed, and the confidence to express it has made me more confident overall and happy I think. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? From a photographic perspective, spending time with other photographers and absorbing their ideas and techniques is one of my favourite things. A good friend willing to share with you can change the way you think about photography. With the wonder of the internet these friends can be ones you see in person regularly, or ones who are on the other side of the world. From a digital art perspective, I am always amazed at what I see from this group (I must admit I really don’t look anywhere else recently), and there are many times I think I actually gasp with wonder when I see some pieces. I love the fact that we have new people joining the group bringing their talents and wonder for us to see. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I have no great ambitions related to my art or photography, if it continues to be something I enjoy doing into the future, that will be enough for me. I will continue to try to find ways to improve my results, continue futzing in Photoshop and I will be happy.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION OVERSCROLL FIX AN ANNOYING PHOTOSHOP BEHAVIOUR By Andrew Haysom
I picked up this tip from one of the YouTube Photoshop videos by Unmesh Dinda (PixImperfect), if you have not watched him, I highly recommend you give him a look. This tip fixes a Photoshop behaviour that has annoyed me for a long time, so I thought it was worth repeating in an article. We all know that using the Hand tool, or simply holding down the Spacebar, you can move the image around the workspace, however the behaviour when doing this is affected by one fairly obscure Photoshop preference setting called Overscroll, which can be found under Preferences / Tools (see Figure 1).
With Overscroll unchecked (which I think is the default setting), when the image is at “Fit Screen” size, or zoomed in smaller than that, the image will not move. This can be annoying when you have a panel covering a part of the image you want to be able to see (for example, see Figure 2). [Fig 1 – Photoshop Tools Preferences]
56
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)
[Fig 2 – With Overscroll not checked]
With Overscroll unchecked the image will only move when the image is zoomed in larger than “Fit Screen” size. With the Overscroll setting checked, the image will move irrespective of how far it is zoomed in or out (see Figure 3).
[Fig 3 – With Overscroll checked]
So, if this behaviour annoys you too, turn on Overscroll. Andrew Haysom

CHARLENE MAGINN INTERVIEW By Trish Hoskin
In this edition of the magazine, I am introducing you to Charlene Maginn, one of the long-term members of the Awake group. Charlene hails from Canada but has become friends with a lot of us from Down Under. I caught up with Charlene to have her do an interview for us and tell us a little more about herself. Charlene, can you tell us all a little about yourself and how you came to be involved in the “Awake” Group”? Prior to joining the Awake group, I had a significant health crisis. When I could no longer participate in my career and most activities in life, I was devastated. Even so, I was determined to find a way back “to my old life”. Unfortunately, or perhaps as destiny would have it, that never happened. So here it was almost five years since my illness began, I happened to land upon an online page where I saw an ad for PhotoArtistry. As many of you know, that first dip into the treasure trove of what was yet to come, would crack open a new world in such a profound and incredible way. Recently we have seen you take on some mentoring people to start the original training again. What gave you the motivation to organize that? I had not been creating much since the beginning of 2020, so I had really hoped this might be a great way to reconnect and begin creating again. I had no idea at the time, that a whole new group of Awakeners would be joining us shortly thereafter – so the timing worked out perfectly! It’s so inspirational to see the fresh new ideas and immense desire to learn. Your work is always dreamy and beautiful - where do you get your inspiration from? To be honest, I am extremely curious and always contemplating what might be next to celebrate through my artistry. It’s been quite a journey from those early days when I was terrified to put my work in the Awake forum. It was those first posts that had me connect with the best of our digital creatives while carving out a new path that allowed me to embrace the magic that comes once you find your dance with the creative process. And what a gift to find inspiration again and again by being involved in all the groups that Sebastian Michaels has spearheaded. Each chance I get to view our group posts and peruse the magazines, I am completely in awe of the outstanding artwork that continues to be created every single day

CHARLENE MAGINN INTERVIEW (CONT....) How has Covid-19 affected your muse - has it helped you get motivated by being home a lot more etc. or has it hindered your processes? Due to health issues, my life, as it were, had already been exceptionally quiet and mostly homebound. My life in fact has changed little since the pandemic, other than the first three months when I was unable to spend time with my grandkids. With that came a pretty low period I would say, and it truly affected my ability to be creative. I am so grateful to be motivated once again; and, very much a part of the new Awake Facebook group! Among The Moon And Stars
These Awake and Kaizen Groups have grown so much over the last few years and a lot of members, although having never met, have become firm friends. What has that meant to you? I truly had no idea how beautiful and profound the relationships would be with so called “online” friends. I have had some amazing conversations with many in our groups and feel truly connected. Fortunately I am able to travel so when we plan a vacation “road trip” I search for Awake members who live in the areas we are about to visit and see if they might be interested in a meet up. It’s been such a gift to meet so many truly kind and talented friends along the way! Following on from this I know you have actually met up a couple of times with not only some of the other America members, but also our own Dean Hohn from Tasmania when he was over there as well - what was that like? It was a truly incredible experience to have met both Dean and his wife Marilyn. They are a remarkably talented artistic couple, and both have shared their talents with me. During our first visit it was such an amazing experience as each of us took time to share our artwork via a slideshow and talked at length about what it means to be part of the Awake experience. We’ve been meeting bi-yearly since and hope to meet up again next summer!

CHARLENE MAGINN INTERVIEW (CONT....)
What has finding “Sebastian Michaels” meant to you and your art? I have spoken often and truly mean it when I say, that the day I learned about his program Photoshop Artistry and the follow up offer to join the first Awake group not only changed my life, but, miraculously gave it new meaning and direction. My health issues had so profoundly altered the way that I interacted with the world, that I didn’t believe it possible to ever find a way to feel fully engaged and purpose driven again. This was an adventure that would change my life in ways UNIMAGINABLE. With your creations do you mainly use your own images or do you do photoshoots or do you use the products supplied by other digital designers and what is provided by the groups you subscribe to? I have been a hobbyist photographer for over 35 yrs, and have taken my own images (grand kids, landscapes, objects) to use as part of my creations, and that in itself can be deeply satisfying. However, I do also love the variety of digital content, model images, and kits etc, that became available through the programs we are part of, becoming a Creative Team Designer, and the various purchases I’ve made. Each has a way of drawing out a different aspect of my artistic expression. What is a typical art day in the life of Charlene? Honestly, every moment that I am awake brings with it an awareness that all of us are an integral part of the web of creation. I’ve always felt connected, especially to people, but never to the arts. Now I see art in everything and it’s a beautiful way to go through life. I will be forever grateful to Sebastian Michaels for helping me discover a truly profound area of my life that may never have been examined nor explored. What a precious gift to be part of the groups that have grown as a direct result of his vision to bring beauty to our world through the digital art realm.
I think you’ll agree another interesting peak into the life of our art comrades. Thanks for your time Charlene and thanks for your efforts to promote our group. Trish

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis Art 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
