CHINESE WHISPERS #34 “I JUST WANT TO DANCE”
Pam Henderson
STAGE 2
Maureen Maxwell
Pam started off this month’s collaboration with a drawn figure that is an unusual direction for us both. When I saw it, I was reminded of a small girl who only ever wanted to be a ballerina, but life had decided otherwise for her. I love ballet and attend many performances throughout the year. It carries you away into another beautiful world - a world of ‘make believe’ and incredible talent. In completing this collab I thought about all those small girls and boys who have dreams of dancing that aren’t realised. A touch of pathos! Enjoy!

Meet your artist Dean Hohn Ulverstone Tasmania
https://www.facebook.com/Dean-Hohn-Photo-Artistry-247723325687722/ https://shopvida.com/collections/dean-hohn Website :
48
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I am originally from the USA and immigrated to Australia in 1978 after 9 years in the US Navy. I am a retired Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer happily married to Marilyn Patton, a retired Social Worker and now an oil painter. We live on the northwest coast of Tasmania in Ulverstone and share a wonderful life photographing and creating art! How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I had been photographing for a couple years and I attended a book release of a well-known Tasmanian Landscape Photographer. During a conversation after the official opening, fine art photography was mentioned. I wasn’t sure what constituted fine art photography, so when I got home, I Googled it, as one does these days! I found an explanation and an example from a Canadian photographer/artist of how she created an image that won several awards. After finding this info, if you ask my wife, 3 days later I emerged with over 100 images. I was hooked! Not long after, that I came across the Photoshop Artistry Fine Art Grunge course, by Sebastian Michaels. I signed up for the course in the middle of December and no sooner had I started that course that I received the announcement of the starting of the AWAKE course. I joined the group and the rest is history! What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I get inspiration from being out in nature. I tend to get bored easily unless something really takes my fancy or is a challenge to me. Over the years, I’ve created abstracts, composite images with different themes and now for the last year I have been absolutely hooked on bird photography. After a break from creating art and just concentrating on bird photography, I have recently found my muse again and I’m once again enjoying creating art pieces incorporating my bird images. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I have no structure to creating as such. I go through my hard drive and find a photo that resonates with me on the day. I start there and then bring in a background layer and go from there. The times I’ve actually tried to create a vision I had, never worked out the way I had envisioned, so I stopped worrying about it and just go with the flow. Try something and if it works, fine and move on to the next piece of the puzzle. If it doesn’t work, I delete it and try something new. I keep going until I’m happy with the end result. What does your art mean to you? My photography and art is therapy for me. I suffer from PTSD from my time in the US Navy. I managed to get on top of it after forty years, but you never really get over it. When I have a down period, I find if I get out in nature and combine that with photography and then art I manage to get back on track again. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Since getting on Google to find out what Fine Art Photography was, followed by joining the Photoshop Artistry Fine Art Grunge and AWAKE courses my life has become one of creating. Prior to picking up the camera again in 2011, I didn’t think I had a creative bone in my body having come from an engineering career where things are black and white, left brain thinking. I was quite amazed I could create pieces of art that others liked and would pay money for! I still pinch myself today when people purchase a piece of my art. It’s a very humbling experience for me.
49
Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I draw inspiration from other photographers from all genres. I also draw inspiration from my wife’s art and the art discussions we have. I feel very fortunate to have a wife that is in the visual arts as well because a lot of the theory applies to both our genres. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I am currently represented by Gallery Pejean, in Launceston and Penguin Creek Gallery in Penguin. I am also an affiliate of the WorldPix.org. I use photos to create designs for scarves that are sold on my VIDA website and the proceeds are donated to the Care For Africa Foundation. The sale of images with WorldPix.org are also donated to the Care For Africa Foundation to support programs in 6 villages in Tanzania. I will continue to study Photo Artistry, photography and continue with my bird photography because it is a challenge that I thoroughly enjoy.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION HOW TO ACCURATELY PLACE A LENS FLARE IN PHOTOSHOP By Andrew Haysom
It is possible to add artificial lens flare to your image in Photoshop using the Filter / Render / Lens Flare command. This article explains a hidden little trick that allows you to very accurately place the lens flare on your image. I will always add my lens flare to a new layer that is filled with black and has the blend mode set to Screen. This allows the change to be non-destructive and allows you to make changes later to the flare like opacity, brightness or colour if you so desire. To use this tip, before invoking the lens flare filter, activate the Info panel (Window / Info) and move the mouse pointer to the exact position you would like to centre the lens flare. In Figure 1 I have moved the mouse pointer over the eye socket in my image, and I have noted the X and Y coordinates (3005, 1888) in the Info panel.
[Figure 1 – Info panel]
62
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) Now invoke the Filter / Render / Lens Flare command, the Lens Flare dialog will be displayed (see Figure 2). Without knowing the little tip I’m discussing here, you would place the lens flare by moving the cross-hair within the preview window, but it is difficult to do so accurately using this method.
[Figure 2 – Lens Flare dialog]
Instead of moving the cross-hair, hold down the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) key, and click on the preview window in the Lens Flare dialog. The Precise Flare Centre dialog is displayed (see Figure 3).
[Figure 3 – Precise Flare Centre dialog]
Enter the X and Y coordinates you noted from the Info panel earlier and press OK, your flare is now positioned exactly where you want it. Once you have chosen the Brightness and Lens Type you need, press OK again to place your lens flare. Remember, because you have placed your flare on a separate layer you can use clipped adjustment layers, or the opacity of the layer to adjust the flare to exactly what you want.

LYNNE ANZELC INTERVIEW By Trish Hoskin
Today I am introducing you all to Lynne Anzelc. Lynne is a successful designer and has her own website and digital store at Oscraps.com. Lynne hails from northern California and creates beautiful imagery kits, that when combined both by her wonderful design team, and anyone who buys her products would make you think you are seeing one of the old world masterpieces hand painted. Lynne’s work has intrigued me for some time, and I have purchased several of her kits which have especially helped when creating some of my travel albums. I thought we would like to hear from Lynne to explain a little about herself and her life as a Digital Designer. Lynne perhaps you can tell us a little more about your life – where you grew up and what led you to Digital Art? Our family moved quite a bit in my early years, and we settled in California, so most of my life has been spent here. I accidentally fell into digital art. I was creating a family album after doing some Genealogy research, and my niece told me that it would be much easier if I did this digitally. Well, off to learn Photoshop I went, where I met the people who changed my life forever. From that class I joined Cilenia Curtis’ team, she taught me the ins and outs, and a few of the girls I met in that class are still on my creative team today. One of those pivotal moments in life. How does a “set of products” come about – where do you get your inspiration from to create your ideas? Oh my, inspiration comes from everything! But primarily nature. I love visiting our National Parks where I photograph everything from the trees to the bugs. I scour art galleries, both online and in person, which is why many of my kits have that old world feel. The ‘seed’ of a kit will typically come from one object, say a flower, and suddenly my mind explodes with a “storyline”. Your products often become a bundle of integrated items such as elements, word art back grounds and the add on’s to the main kit – how long does it take you to design a whole range?
74
It will typically take me three to four weeks for a full kit. I have a tendency to over-create, meaning put too much in a kit, which often has to be pared down due to size. I am trying to create smaller kits, but I seem to be going in the opposite direction! The AddON is my effort to keep the kit manageable, but still give everything I want in a kit.
LYNNE ANZELC INTERVIEW (CONT....) What is an average designing day for Lynne? I am embarrassed to say I work 10-12 hours a day. Some of that is my compulsion to stay organized, but the majority of time is in extracting. Since I get my material from photos, public domain and scans, I also spend time trying to match color and lighting so it is cohesive.

Has the Covid Pandemic affected your creative skills? I know for some it has allowed them more time to work on it whilst others have lost their “Mojo. I have experienced both of those. In the beginning the extra time was fabulous, no interruption of the creative process. But as time wore on, and I had friends and acquaintances affected by the virus, my mojo sort of took a left turn. Currently I am back on track! Looking through your products in the Oscraps store (which I am afraid I visit way too often lol), I see that your themes seem to centre around old-time themes, travel, and yesteryear? Has that been intentional or has this sort of morphed into your angle on art? Definitely a morphing! I was on the verge of quitting, frustrated that I could not create like other designers, I felt like a failure. A friend suggested I start using my photography from our travels, and it sort of just evolved.

LYNNE ANZELC INTERVIEW (CONT....) Your extractions of images are truly detailed. Do you have any tips for our group on how to get that perfect image? Patience. Be willing to take the time. To be honest, I still extract the old fashion way, I do not use automated tools. The key is to isolate your subject, zoom in, way in. For me, extracting is relaxing. I get a thrill of “freeing” the subject. I love the fact that it is quite easy to create an almost recreation of one of the masters look a like paintings from your art and the design team produce amazing things, how does that make you feel when you peruse their work and what appears in the Oscraps Gallery? As you may have guessed, I LOVE art, and I adore seeing what people produce with my kits. I look at myself not as an artist, but as a supplier. So it is thrilling to see the variations that these artists create! I was honoured to have a customer ask to set up a Group on Facebook for everyone to post images containing something from my kits, I visit it daily, their artwork is amazing and inspirational!

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn
As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at
https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw
I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis Art 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
