a r t i s t s DOWN UNDER Australia and New Zealand

Welcome everyone to our Spring edition of Artists Down Under. The weather has started to warm up which is great for defrosting the toes after the long winter months, the blossom is out in full bloom and the bees are grateful. Of course our artists are hard at it creating for you all and they are now mentioning that Christmas is only 16 weeks away. Did I miss the last 3 months? .. lol! Our Featured Artist this month is one of our newest members of the team, Lynsey Stirland-Mitchell (aka Catbeagle Creations). Lynsey is from Perth and has an amazing creative mindset. I am sure you will all love her work. Andrew Haysom has kindly shared another of his Photoshop tutorials. This month it is on Curves, Levels and Auto Adjustments. Speaking of creative mindsets, our Redlands Digital Group have put together another of their images in their Chinese Whispers series. I am sure you will all agree that it is just amazing how an image can completely change from start to finish. This month our Monthly Artists Photographic Challenge has been set for the kids and our artists have come up with some delightful images. I hope you enjoy this edition of Artists Down Under. Stay safe and take care of each other.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION CURVES/LEVELS AUTO ADJUSTMENTS By Andrew Haysom

There are three automatic tone and colour adjustments available on the Photoshop Image menu, these being Auto Tone, Auto Contrast and Auto Color. The only problem with using these commands is that they are destructive. You can perform the same adjustments non-destructively and with further options using the Auto button on the Curves and Levels adjustment layers. For this article I will use the Curves adjustment layer as my example but the features are identical with Levels. When you press the Auto button in the Curves adjustment layer Properties panel (see Figure 1) the Curves are automatically adjusted using one of four algorithms.

[Fig 1 - Curves Adjustment Layer with drop-down menu]

36

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....) Which of the four algorithms is used is determined in the Auto Colour Correction Options dialog box (see Figure 2). This dialog box can be invoked in two ways; choosing Auto Options from the menu that is displayed by clicking the four horizontal lines at the top-right of the Curves Properties panel, or by holding down the [Alt / Option] key while clicking the Auto button.

[Fig 2 - Auto Colour Correction Options dialog]

The four algorithms are: 1. Enhance Monochromatic Contrast This is equivalent to the Image / Auto Contrast command and clips each of the colour channels identically to enhance contrast while preserving colour. 2. Enhance Per Channel Contrast This is equivalent to the Image / Auto Tone command and clips the colour channels independently to enhance contrast and alter colour casts. 3. Find Dark & Light Colors This is equivalent to the Image / Auto Color command and analyses the image to find dark and light colours and uses these as the shadows and highlight colours.

37

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (CONT....)

4. Enhance Brightness and Contrast This algorithm analyses the image to perform content-aware monochromatic enhancement. This will often brighten the image significantly. For the first three options you have further control with the following options. The Snap Neutral Midtones will cause the midtone values to be mapped toward the Midtones target colour shown in the Target Colors & Clipping section of the dialog box. You can adjust the amount of clipping performed for the highlights and shadows by changing the clipping percentages. You can adjust the target colours for the highlights, midtones and shadows by clicking on the colour swatches. Checking the Save as Defaults check box will make your selected options the default whenever the Auto button is pressed. You can cycle between the four algorithms and make changes to the target colours and clipping and see the changes reflected live in your image. Obviously because the changes are made using a Curves or Levels adjustment layer you can modify the effect using the layer opacity or a layer mask, by changing the blend mode of the Curves/Levels adjustment layer (I will sometimes choose Luminosity to remove any effect to colour) or by manually adjusting the curves or levels. My personal favourite of the four algorithms (and therefore my default) is the Find Dark & Light Colours algorithm but have a play with these and see what you think.

Andrew Haysom

Meet your artist Lynsey Stirland-Mitchell Perth, WA Australia

Website : https://artistsdownunder.com.au/artist-3/lynsey-stirland-mitchell/

56

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I live in Perth, Western Australia. From England originally, my parents moved to NZ when I was 13 and I moved to Oz in my twenties. I’m semi-retired and before covid blind-sided us all my partner & I were enjoying the nomad life, chasing the sun between Australia, NZ, and Europe, house sitting and completing pilgrim Caminos. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry and what inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? I retired five years ago and was looking for a retirement hobby. First I tried my hand at photography but I wasn’t particularly successful at it and wasn’t really getting the enjoyment out of it that I thought I would. I was browsing FB one day and came across an ad for Sebastian’s Photo Artistry course. As soon as I saw what fabulous images people were producing I wanted to be able to do that, so I signed up. Inspiration for me is still being amazed that I can create an image I love and would hang on my wall. I’m hoping that never gets tired. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? Not really, I usually have a vague idea for an image but often find once I start it goes off in its own direction. What does your art mean to you? If you had asked me a short time ago I would have said I don’t have a creative bone in my body and I’ve never done anything creative. My work life was all in computer science & logistics and, as such, logic ruled the day. I love that I have found a way to be creative that also suits my love of software. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Absolutely! The one thing in particular I’ve noticed is that I now hear someone say something or read a phrase in a book and I think “ooh that would make a great image”. As I said, I was never a creative person, but now I’m proud to tell people I’m a digital artist. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? I have always loved surrealism, especially Dali, and I’m hoping my art heads in that direction. But for now I just use the inspiration garnered from all you amazing artists to keep moving forward. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I don’t have any great aspirations for my art. My first goal is to finish the Awake course, with the help of my wonderful friends on the Photo Artistry Working Group Facebook page. My second goal I guess is to pin down and hone my personal style.

WATER FROM ART by Dean Hohn

As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it sup ports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis

Art

by Margaret Kalms

50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill. My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images. My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like. Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!
