EDITOR’S MESSAGE Merry Christmas everyone and welcome to our December edition of Artists Down Under. Well the silly season is upon us once again as you see everyone clambering around with shopping and cooking. The decorations are busily being hung and the tree put up planning for the arrival of the jolly ole man in red. What a fantastic time of the year. Firstly I would like to give a very special welcome to our newest members Michael Kane, Julie Pallant, Penny de Jong, Carol Shanley and Christine Turner Coles. It is great to see our talented group expanding allowing us to present to you more of the exceptional art our members produce. Once again the past month has seen many of our our artists exceed themselves, with their special achievements, exhibitions and awards, congratulations to all concerned. This month I would like to share with you two photoshop tutorials, one from our ever loving artist Andrew Haysom who touches on some “Type Shortcut Keys”, which is extremely helpful and our second tutorial comes from Barbara Dudzinska who introduces us to “Selections of Semi Transparent Objects”. The Redlands Digital Artists Group never cease to amaze us with the talent they show in their “Chinese Whispers” series, this month being a Christmas theme.
We have three very talented Featured Artists that I would like to intorduce to you - Sue Masterson, Trish Hoskin and Warren Mayall, their artwork is simply amazing. Two of our artists, Judi Lapsley Miller and Viki Murray, have been asked to participate in exhibitions over the Christmas period, so if you are in the area where the exhibitions are being held, please drop in and show your support.
Margaret Kalms
I hope you enjoy this month’s edition of “Artists Down Under”. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry and safe Christmas, and an extremely Happy New Year. I hope that you all enjoy and treasure the time you spend with your loved ones over the festive season. Stay safe and see you all next month. Pam Henderson

Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch.

It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world. I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.
Dean L Hohn My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.
Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board You can see my gallery of images at https:// to work out how I could fit into their organization. worldpix.org/galleries-2/ In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org. WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at
https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw
I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images.
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like.
My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill.
Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise awareness and money for women’s health! We all need clothes & household goods. Buy yourself a treat or buy a special gift for your friends. Make your shopping count! Remember 50% of profit goes to endometriosis research!

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!

“TREE PLACE GROUP” EXHIBITION
Prashanta Vahita
When Noosa artist Anne Harris followed the fallen form of an ancient tree to the local rubbish dump and made the decision to salvage it rather than watch it be chipped, she set about a chain of events that has seen some 25 separate creative projects develop. Each of these artistic offshoots will be revealed during Tree Place, an exhibition Harris has curated for Noosa Regional Gallery this summer. Our very own artist, Viki Murray, has been selected as one of the artists exhibiting some of her work. If you are in the area during this time, pop in to the Gallery and help to support Viki’s amazing art series “Finding Solace”, which was inspired by the tranquility of Lake Cootharaba at Boreen Point. All Viki’s images that will be displayed are printed on metal.

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge
Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Don’t worry about catching up, just jump in at the current week. From amateurs with just a cellphone to professionals with the latest gear, the participants in the AoB photo challenge bring many and varied perspectives to the weekly challenges. The challenges are designed to develop skills for wildlife and nature advocacy through visual storytelling, creativity and learning new photographic techniques. If you want to start using your photography for good causes, do join us. Details at https://www.artbyjlm.com/art-of-birding-2018.html

Week 49: the next generation (story) From baby birds to human chicks, what we do today will determine their future.
Week 50: focus stacking (technical) Use focus stacking to increase depth of field in macro or landscape photography. For this technique, you’ll need a tripod or stable mount. Take multiple photos at different focal lengths, then combine in Photoshop (or similar) by first aligning the images then blending them. If you’re lucky, your camera may do this automatically. And there are also apps for your phone that also do focus stacking.
Week 51: family (story) You can interpret “family” however you like - perhaps mum, dad and the kids, or perhaps the taxonomic rank of “family”.
Week 52: new beginnings (your interpretation) Wildcard Week - take some of what you’ve learned this year and put it all together.

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge Photographers’ Photos from Prior Weeks For week 40 and Conservation in Action, this is an 8-day old Hawaiian Monk seal pup that I was privileged to photograph. There are only about 1,400 Hawaiian Monk seals left, and this precious baby and her mom were protected by volunteers 24/7 with a 50 foot no-entry perimeter while they were on a remote beach in Kona. If you look closely, you’ll see fishing line by the pup’s face. Because of this photo, one of the conservationists was able to remove the rogue line from the protected area before it injured baby or mom. Since this time at the beach, I’ve been an obsessive recycler, driving my family and co-workers crazy! And my husband, the avid fisherman is scolded continuously about cleaning up after himself while fishing!

The warou (welcome swallow) are often seen flying just above the surface of the lower lake at Zealandia Ecosanctuary, looking for insects. They are fast fliers making them difficult to photograph. This one stopped long enough for a photo near to the valve tower under which a pair nested last summer, on the handrail leading to the boat jetty. A perfect leading line.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SHORTCUT KEYS By Andrew Haysom
Some Type Shortcut Keys Photoshop provides you with the capability to exercise precise control over the text you place in your documents using the Type tool. The five main features that control the size and position of your text can all be found in the Character panel (see Figure 1). So you can select the relevant text and then adjust these parameters in the panel dialog, but there are some keyboard shortcuts that I think make it easier. [Fig 1 – Character panel]
To adjust the Font Size of selected text hold down the [Cmd/Ctrl] and [Shift] keys and press the “<” (less than) and “>” (greater than) keys to reduce and increase the font size respectively. If you add the [Opt/Alt] key as well you will reduce or increase the font size in larger increments. “Tracking” and “Kerning” refer to the horizontal space between characters. Tracking is used to refer to the spacing for a large group of characters (e.g an entire block of text, a paragraph, a sentence or a word) whilst kerning refers to the spacing between two individual characters. To adjust the tracking of a selected block of text, hold down the [Opt/Alt] key and press the “left arrow” to decrease the tracking (move the characters closer to each other) and “right arrow” to increase the tracking (move the characters further apart). To adjust the kerning of two individual characters, position the text cursor in between them and use the same keystroke combinations. “Leading” refers to the vertical space between the lines of characters. To adjust the leading of a selected block of text, hold down the [Opt/Alt] key and press the “down arrow” to decrease the leading (move the lines closer to each other) and “up arrow” to increase the leading (move the lines further apart). The baseline refers to the imaginary line upon which the characters sit, you can adjust the baseline for selected characters for things like subscripts and superscripts, or to place special characters like copyright symbols at a different height. To adjust the baseline of a selected character or group of characters, hold down the [Opt/Alt] and [Shift] keys and press the “down arrow” to shift the character(s) down and “up arrow” to shift the character(s) up.

OUTDOORS I am a Digital Artist/ Photographer working from my home studio “Studio Su. My interest in Digital Artistry came from a love of Photography and the desire to carry the photos further in a way that I could convey a story to my viewers. My studio has grown into a place that young aspiring models come to play allowing me to create a great deal of Digital Art. I have produced award winning art and photos as well as being published in various magazines around the world. It is my desire to create art that captures the imagination as well as the eye of the viewer and leaves them to wonder and create their own story from my work. Sue Masterson

CITYSCAPE
Born and lived all my life in South Australia and have been interested in Art for most of my life. My extensive overseas travels have afforded me the opportunity to experience and see some amazing things. It allowed me to not only visit some of the great art galleries of the world and view the masters, but allowed me to develop my love of photography. I have taken courses in Tasmania, England and on-line to hone my skills in Photography and the Arts as well as interacting with other artists to develop my own style. I am privileged to be a Fellow at the Royal South Australian Society of Arts. Having worked professionally with computers for my living the transition to learning and taking an interest in computerized Art has also been of great value. The ability to work with my photos using such tools as Photoshop has also extended my further enjoyment in the Arts. I have found without out really realizing it over the years that the principles that have been taught with painting lessons had flowed into my ability to allow me to take some wonderful photos. Such things as remembering the rule of thirds and focal points for impact seem to have just been imbedded in my brain without realizing it. Having joined PhotoArtistry and then Awake in 2016 and then Kaizen I have had my eyes opened. Our group get togethers in both Melbourne and Launceston has opened my eyes to a new direction in my art as you can see from my pieces. Since joining the group, I have been privileged to be published in a number of the Photo Artistic Life Magazines, received awards in several on line competitions and will have a piece hung in a gallery in Palm Springs Exhibition in February 2019. MY PHOTOSHOP CORNER SELECTIONS OF SEMI TRANSPARENT OBJECTS By Barbara Dudzinska
Luminosity Selection from any Background There are so many different ways to select objects from background. Some selections are very easy, some are more complex. I would like to concentrate on more complex but easy to do selections of semi transparent objects. Processing of this type of selection depends on background colour and its complexity. I will try to explain a few options in the next issues of our magazine.
My first example shows how easy it is to extract water from a simple background. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Open first image with water. Go to Channels and click on RGB Channel and next CTRL+Click (Command+Click for a Mac) on a channel with the most contrast. This will load luminosity as a seletion. Go back to layers and CTRL+J (Command+J for a Mac) to load the luminosity selection to a new layer. Go to Layer (Menu Bar) > Matting > Remove Black/White Matting (depends of the colour of the initial image). You can also use “Defringe. Now you have a selection of the water on a transparent background. You can use this selection on any other background. Now you can place any other photo below the layer with extracted water and you have a new image. You can adjust contrast of the final image.
Other option for using this extracted water 1. 2. 3. 4.
106
To use this selection on any other photo open 1 or more photos. Go to Menu Bar, use Window > Arrange and choose the appropriate number of photos. Make the photo with the transparent selection active. Click on the transparent layer and with the mouse swipe this layer(s) to other photos.

M O L LY A N D T H E I N D I A N S
THE EGG
I started my photographic life when I was about 12 years old with an old box brownie camera. It took a roll of film that allowed you to take 12 photos, all black and white. It took a couple of months pocket money to develop a roll of film so I learned to be very strategic in what I photographed. So different to the digital world where I can go out on a shoot these days and easily take 500 to 1,000 shots. I have always loved photographing people and animals, landscapes have never really appealed to me, but I always appreciate a scene that is breathtaking. Discovering photoshop was sensational. I think I started on Photoshop 3. It wasn’t a huge advantage starting so early, because it is only in these later years that it has grown to such a huge programme. I love doing composite pieces of art, and am always photographing “things” to add to my stash. To be able to produce something with all my own photographs gives me a great sense of satisfaction. The journey with Sebastian has opened my mind to so many new worlds, and places I keep spinning off to. I love to print my work off and frame it myself making all my own frames. These have become larger and more elaborate as time goes on. I have two large format printers, my wife would say that’s two more than I need, but it keeps me from the wine. We live in a big old villa house we renovated, in Te Aroha, New Zealand, population 4,500 people. No traffic, but a perfect peace to dream and create art. Warren Mayall
