Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch.

It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world. I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.
Dean L Hohn My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.
Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board You can see my gallery of images at https:// to work out how I could fit into their organization. worldpix.org/galleries-2/ In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org. WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at
https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw
I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research
My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images.
26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like.
My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!
Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill.
Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise awareness and money for women’s health! We all need clothes & household goods. Buy yourself a treat or buy a special gift for your friends. Make your shopping count! Remember 50% of profit goes to endometriosis research!

Women with endometriosis need real medical progress to reduce their suffering. I passionately desire to raise money for endometriosis research so that faster diagnoses are made and more effective treatments are found. To raise money for endometriosis research, I host events and sell products on Redbubble. Recently I gave $3,000 to Canberra Endometriosis Centre!

WHAT’S ON Judi Lapsley Miller Visions Of Zealandia 2 Zealandia EcoSanctuary 1 July 2019 - 31 August 2019 3 Waiapu Road, Karori, Wellington, NZ www.artbyjlm.com/visions-of-zealandia2
A SOLO EXHIBITION by JUDI LAPSLEY MILLER 1 JULY - 31 AUGUST 2019 ZEALANDIA ECOSANCTUARY, WELLINGTON Following on from her wildly successful 2017 exhibition at Zealandia, Judi’s latest exhibition tells us new stories about Zealandia’s birds, with images exploring their intelligence and curiosity, their history and beauty, and what the future might hold for them. “Visions of Zealandia 2: the big idea” celebrates each bird as an individual, unique soul with a story to tell in a series of painterly portraits. Of special note is “Imagine” - a commissioned work by Jim and Eve Lynch, founders and visionaries of the Zealandia project, created especially for Jim’s upcoming book on the history and impact of Zealandia. For many years now, Judi has advocated for birds through writing and photography, as well as field work. Her step into wildlife advocacy through creative interpretation was a natural progression. Freed from the constraints of pure nature photography, Judi exposes her interpretation of the inner world of others – their thoughts and feelings, their hopes and desires – in a form tangible to the human viewer that she hopes engenders empathy with other living creatures. Caring and understanding at an emotional level can translate into action that will ensure these precious species survive. What is fine-art photo artistry? For photo-artists, the photograph is just the first step in the creative process. One digital photo-artistic image can consist of hundreds of layers of photographs, graphics, scanned ephemera and textures, lighting and colour adjustments, and digital brush strokes all blended and masked together to form an image that is more painting than photograph. The image may then be Giclée printed onto archival fine-art canvas or paper or other substrates. Archival framed and unframed limited-edition prints are available in three sizes. They can be purchased and/or ordered at Zealandia or via Judi’s website. For all the pictures in this exhibition, 10% of the artist’s proceeds goes back to conservation in addition to the gallery commission (which also directly goes to support Zealandia’s conservation work), thus both the artist and the art collector are participating in wildlife conservation. Judi will be at Zealandia EcoSanctuary on Thursday, 4 July from -6.30pm for a special viewing with drinks and nibbles. If you would like to join us, please RSVP by 1 July. Or please feel free to contact Judi to meet at another time by arrangement, including joining her and her photographer friends for their regular Sunday morning photo-walk. GAIL EDWARDS INTERVIEW Trish Hoskin This month I had the pleasure of contacting Gail Edwards who most of you I am sure have heard of via our Facebook groups or Kaizen training. Gail is a prolific artist within the group and her works are quite magical. Gail kindly consented to being interviewed for the magazine and her story and journey are really interesting. I hope you enjoy reading the responses to the questions I put to Gail.
Can you tell us a little about your background and how you came to be artistic? My journey started when I was very young. In school my best grade was always in art class. When you are in school you get to try all kinds of different media and that’s how it should be. I have also been very blessed to work in artistic jobs over my lifetime. When my girls were young I stayed home with them and began selling acrylic painted wood pieces for some spending money. When they got a little bigger I began teaching painting at a local art store that was run by a friend. After that I worked as a floral designer for almost 15 years. Designing creative arrangements was only part of the work I did, there was also floor displays and a huge street front window that needed to be amazing to catch the eye of people passing by. About 15 years ago I met my now husband. He was a professional photographer and my first teacher of Photoshop. I couldn’t get enough of the program! I started editing images for his business. And then about 3 years ago I found Sebastian’s course. It has changed my life and here I am today!! My mind has always been in the art world one way or another.
52
GAIL EDWARDS INTERVIEW (Cont ...) Your work has been prolific in social media and our Awake Groups - how do you find the time to spend creating the amazing pieces? Finding time can be very difficult in this busy world that we live in. When I was working fulltime it was more difficult. I found time at the end of the day when we would sit down and watch a couple of hours of TV before going to bed. I started pulling out my tablet and just started creating. I was surprised how even just those couple hours a day improved my skills. My husband was happy I was sitting with him and I was happy creating. Do you always use stock images or are you lucky enough to have models available for shoots? LOL, I get this question all the time and I have a couple answers. First, we have many beautiful people where we live but they are not pro models, and this shows in the images (and the fact that I am not a pro photographer). I have shot some images of my nieces and nephew who have done commercial shoots for Bonnie Bell products as well as Walmart and I have used their images in some of my composites and they turned out great! But for the most part I use stock images. The second answer is this ... I love creating composites and devote most of my time doing that. There are pro photographers who have pro models and know exactly what they are doing. I feel that if I were to do the photographing and setting up backgrounds and every thing else that is associated with being a photographer, my composites would suffer, and I would be totally worn out. I have recently seen some amazing images from your travels, what cameras do you use to capture these? Traveling to different places and seeing how people get along in other parts of the world is quite intriguing to me. On my recent trip to India I took my Canon EOS R. I have many lenses but used my 50mm for most of this trip, switching to my 85mm for a couple places that we went to. I love the prime lenses. I love the sharpness they give me. They are heavy, but I love the quality. Where do you sell your products, and have you found any range or style more successful than others? My products consist of doing commission work for clients and creating tutorials of how I accomplish my style of art. I love sharing with other artists! Any tips for upcoming artists on the do’s and don’ts in trying to sell their work? Be active on social media!! This is so important. So many artists starting out are “afraid” to post the works of art they have done because they may get negative comments. I have to say that the art community is fabulous! They are so encouraging! And remember it’s okay to get critiques, it helps you grow as an artist. It’s fine for your family to say they love your work but sometimes they don’t know how to tell you how to improve a piece. Growth is good. Also, find a style that is all yours. This may take a while because there is so much out there to try! But, if you can find a style that you love and bring your own creativeness to it, and make it unique you will have a better chance of being successful. Even for those of you who aren’t looking to sell your work ... there is a peacefulness that comes with just sitting down, creating, and letting this crazy world go by. We have also seen some of your amazing work and tutorials within the Kaizen group and other sites, do you enjoy creative teaching like that - does it make you nervous to do this? A few years ago I would never have thought I would be creating tutorials of my art for others to view! Then I was asked if I would. I won’t lie, there was a definite hesitation. But sometimes you just have to jump in with both feet!! I didn’t have a program or a mic to do a tutorial. I did some quick research and bought what I needed and had my first tutorial out in less than a couple weeks. Was I nervous? ... YES!! But after my husband did an edit for me I listened to it, it was okay! That was my first paid gig. Onwards and upwards from there ... I now am a regular instructor for the Kaizen group, I have my own channel on Vimeo and continue to do commission work on a regular basis.
So there you have it, some really great information. If you have time check out her Vimeo channel as well as there are some fantastic tutorials there too. Thanks so much Gail.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I have been a photographer for over 38 years, beginning as a Wedding Photographer using film cameras in the early 1980s. In 1991 I became the father of Multimedia in Australia; taking out back to back world titles in 1992 and 1993. I live in Sydney, Australia. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? Coming from a Photography background, moving into graphic design and with a deep appreciation for Art of all types the interest was always there; like most I lacked confidence in my work (yes, even after back to back world titles). What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? My inspiration comes from many sources. As my art is primarily for me, what I felt when I took the photo overlaid with how I feel when processing it has a major bearing on the finished piece. I have studied the way the old Masters take you on a journey through their paintings; how noted Photographers tell a story and/or draw an emotion to engage the viewer. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I feel almost a spiritual connection with my Art and the steps to produce it are rarely the same or repeatable. I have actively chosen not to develop a style of my own, I can best be described as Bohemian, always striving to improve and create something different. What does your art mean to you? Suffering from anxiety based depression and short term memory loss, my art is my escape from reality and an excuse to indulge my fantasies. When I look through the lens of a camera, I am not focusing on my problems and the gratification from the end result gives me the energy to continue dealing with challenges faced in life. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Photo Artistry is a wonderful community of talented people, all with something different to bring to the table. I am honoured to be part of such a talented group of people and hope that I too inspire others. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? Without the support and encouragement from Ilona Abou-Zolof and Christina Brunton I would have never considered myself an artist. I have always admired the work of Sue Robertson and would cite her as my earliest influence. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I hope to be advanced enough along my creative journey to become part of the AWAKE program in 2020. I don’t plan to let this journey ever end and look forward to meeting more of my peers face to face in the future.

The Story Behind LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD By Jim Merchant
Since I was a young boy I have been interested in the story of Little Red Riding Hood; however I was never happy with the way it ended. Poor innocent Little Red Riding Hood had done nothing wrong; she was just visiting her sick Grandmother (still not sure a basket of apples was going to cure her). So I embarked on a three year project of passion to photograph the story of Little Red Riding Hood the Revenge! Little Red Riding Hood starts out quite innocent and begins her good deed journey to Grandma’s house. Finding the evidence of a struggle and proof that her Grandmother had been eaten by the wolf, she becomes determined to avenge her Grandmother’s death. Little Red Riding Hood waits in the forest where the wolf must surely pass, she is silent and under the cover of darkness. Using her trusty compound bow and arrow, she takes careful aim and ends the Wolfs treacherous ways. The images of Little Red Riding Hood were shot in my studio or on location at the nearby mangrove forest. Additional background images were shot at the Great Otway National Park in Victoria, Australia, approximately 1000km from my home and for the image of Little Red Riding Hood leaving the forest, a second model and forest location was used. It is with great personal satisfaction that I share this with you all.

Art of Birding 2019
Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge 89
For the second year, join us on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy and creative/artistic photography is where my heart is and I hope to encourage more photographers to not just stop at taking gorgeous wildlife photos, but to take them further. These weekly challenges encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). I have created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Be warned - you will (hopefully!) be pushed outside your comfort zone, and you will likely need to do some Googling to learn more about new techniques, but that’s also the point:) This is your challenge - do as much or as little as you want and in your own timeframe - it’s up to you to decide what works best for you. I do encourage you to take photos for the challenges, rather than digging through your archives. You can take photos in advance and “bank” them and you can do them out of order. All I ask is that you try to take the photos intentionally with the challenges in mind, rather than retrofitting an image to fit the theme. With an emphasis on storytelling and advocacy, I encourage you to post your images to social media (especially Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Flickr) and to your blog if you have one. Use hashtags to enable us to find and share your images. Challenge hashtags: #artofbirding, #artofbirding2019, #aob2019week1 through to #abo2019week52. Find the hashtags used by the conservation projects you are photographing, e.g. #sharemesealandia, #orokonui, so they can pick up and share your photos too. Use the hashtags commonly used for your critter: e.g., #kaka, #takahe, along with #conservation, #wildlife, and many more general terms. Join our Facebook group and post your potos, discuss the challenges, and get and give help:

MY FAVOURITE CRITTER (STORY) Week 23: 03 Jun 2019 This year “My favourite critter” is a “Story” challenge - and specifically a story about a challenge your favourite critter faces in its survival.
VIDEO (TECHNICAL) Week 24: 10 Jun 2019 Virtually all cameras these days come with video capability, but have you truly explored how it works? (I haven’t!) If you’re like me and just press the red button and hope for the best, this week’s challenge is designed to give us a push. Take the next step and find out how to do something more with video such as changing the focus mode to better suit the subject, use slow-motion or fast-motion capture, or similar. Advanced challenge: create an Instagram IGTV or Story video with overlaid text or effects.
MUCKING IN (STORY) Week 25: 17 Jun 2019 Tell a story about a local group who are mucking in and making a difference. You can either shoot the results of their labour or the people themselves in action. Be sure to get permission from any people you photograph, especially if you post the photo online.
MOTION BLUR (CREATIVE) Week 26: 24 Jun 2019 Rather than aiming for that tack-sharp image, use a slow-shutter speed to blur motion of an animal or plant in a creative way. Advanced challenge: use panning and a slow-shutter to capture the sense of movement of a bird in flight.
91
ENVIRONMENTAL PORTRAIT (TECHNICAL) Week 27: 01 Jul 2019 Hold on to your hats - this may push you well out of your comfort zone (it does for me!). Part of telling stories about wildlife advocacy is highlighting the incredible people doing conservation work. An environmental portrait is a fabulous way to tell a story with a picture of the subject in their environment. Rather than trying to isolate your subject, you’re looking to show them in a setting that describes who they are. Be sure to ask the person permission to use their photo if you intend to post it online. Advanced challenge: use your photo to blog about the amazing work your subject is doing and why it’s important. SYMBIOSIS (STORY) Week 28: 08 Jul 2019 Show an example of symbiosis, where two organisms have a close, biological interaction. BACKGROUND (TECHNICAL) Week 29: 15 Jul 2019 Controlling a messy background can make or break your photo but there are some hacks you can use if just moving your feet isn’t enough. This technique works well when photographing flowers and fungi. Use a piece of dark card or fabric - matt not shiny - and position it behind your subject, far enough away that it blurs. Advanced challenge: use a textured background that enhances but doesn’t compete with your subject - some photo-artists even print out textures onto boards so that they don’t have to composite in a background afterwards. BOKEH (CREATIVE) Week 30: 22 Jul 2019 Last year bokeh was a technical challenge. This year it’s creative. Open up your aperture to its widest setting and look for sparkles. Look at how the size of the bokeh changes depending on how close your subject is to the lens and how far the background is from the subject. Advanced challenge: use an aperture template for your lens to create shaped bokeh - or experiment with attaching a card with a shape cut in it over your lens. WINGS (STORY) Week 31: 29 Jul 2019 Tell a story of flight. RAINBOWS (CREATIVE) Week 32: 05 Aug 2019 Either take a photo of a rainbow or, if nature doesn’t cooperate, light refracting through a bubble or dewdrop, etc. STARBURST (TECHNICAL) Week 33: 12 Aug 2019 Learn how to take a photo with a starburst effect by setting your aperture to be very narrow and pointing it at a point light source (fairy lights, street lights, the sun). DON’T LOOK THROUGH THE LENS if you use the sun! This technique works well with low sun through twigs. You’ll likely find a tripod handy as the shutter speed might be quite long. SPIRALS (CREATIVE) Week 34: 19 Aug 2019 Nature is filled with spirals - from sunflower seeds to snail shells and more. Show a natural spiral in a creative, compelling way. LET YOUR PHOTO FLY FREE (TECHNICAL) Week 35: 26 Aug 2019 Give a gift to the world and donate a photo to Wikimedia Commons for anyone to use. We all use Wikipedia so I believe we should all give a little back too. You can choose what level licence to give (I use CC-BY-4.0: free to use including commercially, but with attribution). Think about a subject that is special to where you live or an exotic place you have travelled. Do you have photos of rare species? A sexy slime mold? A rare lichen? The more esoteric the better - just be sure it’s correctly identified! BUSY BEES (STORY) Week 36: 02 Sep 2019 Bees are vital to many ecosystems but are imperilled by human activity. Tell a story about either your native or introduced bees. DOUBLE EXPOSURE (CREATIVE) Week 37: 09 Sep 2019 Somewhere in your camera menu will be a function that allows you to take multiple exposures and overlay them. Use it creatively to superimpose a second picture on top of your main photos. Advanced/Alternative: using Photoshop, blend multiple photos together using blend modes and masking.

CARBON (STORY) Week 38: 16 Sep 2019 Carbon footprint, carbon sequestering, carbon sink, ... carbon is the story of our time. Find an angle and help us understand the role carbon plays in our environment. Advanced: carbon dioxide and methane are both invisible gases - can you find a clever way to illustrate them or their effects visually? COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS (TECHNICAL) Week 39: 23 Sep 2019 Check out the colour wheel and choose two complementary colours (think red–green, yellow–purple, and blue–orange) and take a photo where those two colours dominate. Don’t get too hung up on exactly which colour model to use - just choose one :). Advanced challenge: go for three colours that are split complementary where one complementary colour is split into two nearby analogous colours. A CALL TO ACTION (STORY) Week 40: 30 Sep 2019 Cover a local event that has the environment at its heart - perhaps a protest, an art exhibition, a bioblitz, ... Advanced challenge: blog about the event. INTENTIONAL CAMERA MOVEMENT (CREATIVE) Week 41: 07 Oct 2019 Spin your camera round and round or up and down to get an image with intentional camera movement. Aim to do so in a way that adds to the subject you’re shooting (e.g., up and down movement to capture the majesty of a grove of tall trees). Advanced challenge: use the Path Blur filter in Photoshop to add movement in post-processing. FOOD CHAIN (STORY) Week 42: 14 Oct 2019 Illustrate the concept of the food chain in a photograph. Advanced challenge: how many different lifeforms in the same food chain can you get in one photograph? SELECTIVE BLUR (TECHNICAL) Week 43: 21 Oct 2019 If you have a lens baby or wide-aperture art lens, you will love this challenge! This technique is also easy if you have a tiny macro lens for your cell phone camera. If you don’t have any of these lenses, fear not, you might have to more carefully choose an appropriate subject but it’s still doable. Using a wide aperture, focus on only one small but important part of the subject, letting the rest fall off into blur. This technique works well for flowers: consider the form of the flower in question and see what first draws your eye - is it a curl of a petal, the curve of the stem, the pop of a stamen? Focus only on that. Think carefully about your composition and where that sweet spot of focus will fall. Hint: you can also use Photoshop or apps to selectively blur in post-processing. Advanced challenge: add a painterly texture. CREEPY (CREATIVE) Week 44: 28 Oct 2019 Just in time for Halloween, tell a creepy story. It could be about a creepy-crawly, or wherever your imagination takes you. FOR A FRIEND (TECHNICAL) Week 45: 04 Nov 2019 By now you will have some stunning photos, so let’s do something with them that you can give as a gift and bring joy into someone’s life. Ideas: design a calendar, print greeting cards, print and frame your favourite photos, make a blurb book, make a handbound book - the sky is the limit! You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes getting your images off your computer and into the world. MY HAPPY PLACE (STORY) Week 46: 11 Nov 2019 Show us your happy place and make us happy too. REFLECTIONS (CREATIVE) Week 47: 18 Nov 2019 Double the impact with a reflection. Advanced challenge: show only the reflection in a creative way or add a fake reflection using Photoshop (or similar) and see if we can tell :) ONE SHOT WONDER (TECHNICAL) Week 48: 25 Nov 2019 You get one shot - so triple-check all your settings and think long and hard about your composition before pressing the shutter. It’s so easy these days to pray and spray, hoping to get the perfect shot while consigning yourself to an afternoon of deleting a thousand identical photos.

TILL LIFE (CREATIVE) Week 49: 02 Dec 2019 Arrange a still life scene and photograph it compellingly. Try to tell a visual story that links each element - though it doesn’t have to be an obvious one. Don’t be satisfied with your first photo, try different angles and settings and explore the scene. Advanced challenge: include memento mori to represent the transience of life and feel free to use Photoshop compositing and photo-artistry techniques to turn your still life into a work of art. EXPOSURE BRACKETING (TECHNICAL) Week 50: 09 Dec 2019 Do you get frustrated with photos that are either overblown in the highlights or have no details in the shadows? Extend the dynamic range of your photos by exposure bracketing to take multiple photos with different exposures, then combining them in-camera (if your camera does that) or externally in Lightroom or Photoshop either manually or by using the inbuilt features. Most cameras will have an exposure bracketing setting that will automatically take the set of photos at each exposure value. A tripod will also come in handy. ON THE EDGE (STORY) Week 51: 16 Dec 2019 Find a region where two ecosystems overlap and meet the locals, e.g. the littoral zone at the beach, an estuary, wetlands ... PHOTO ESSAY (EVERYTHING) Week 52: 23 Dec 2019 This is when we bring it all together. Think of the skills you’ve developed this year and create a photo essay of 5-10 photos, related by theme or topic, and use it to advocate for something you care about. Feel free to use photos you’ve taken this year or take new ones. Aim for a consistent look-and-feel across the photoset, while ensuring each picture contributes uniquely to the story. How to present your essay? Possibilities include designing an Adobe Spark presentation, Instagram story, YouTube slideshow with sound track. Make sure to tell the world about your essay through social media posts etc. Advanced challenge: arrange to print and exhibit your photo essay. BONUS WEEK FOR PHOTO ESSAY (EVERYTHING) Week 53, 2020: 30 Dec 2019

Week 17: Haiku (Creative) At Foxton Beach I stopped mid walk and reflected on the astonishing colours and reflections the sky and light were creating on the wet surface of the sand. My companions walked further on and then stopped to reflect on the beautiful landscape and scene they were a part of. I watched and reflected on the image of my friends standing on the surface of the world. The peace, tranquillity and sheer magnitude of our world and surroundings. Catherine Thompson Manawatu, New Zealand
Week 18: Rivers (Story) The beautiful Swan River in Western Australia serves as a sanctuary for many residential and migratory water birds, not to mention fish like Black Bream, Herring and Flounder. It is also home to families of Dolphins which can quite often be seen circling together to round up a school of fish for snacking on, or occasionally leaping up out of the water in playful frolic in the wake of a ferry on its way to Rottnest, an island off the coast of WA. The capital city of Perth also sits proudly on the Swan. The Canning and Avon rivers are two main tributaries of the Swan River which flows through many suburbs of Perth, until finally meeting the Indian Ocean in Fremantle. It is also part of a place I call home. Christine Chester Perth, Australia

Meet your artist Lyn Darlington Central Coast, NSW Australia
Website :
sabvaningphotoart.com
117
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I’m a photographer/photo artist from the Central Coast, NSW. I’ve always felt passionate about animals, wildlife and nature. I have always enjoyed dabbling in many creative hobbies but my true love is photograph. I enjoy spending my time with furry friends and wildlife capturing their unique characteristics and turning these images into art. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have always liked using textures to add more meaning to my original photos and by chance I came across the Photo Artistry course. I have found the course has helped me make my photos more appealing and Photoshop opens up lots of possibilities that go beyond the original photograph. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Many things inspire me but my love of animals, wildlife and nature are definitely a huge inspiration which stirs emotion and draws attention to the beauty which surrounds us. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? I rarely sit down with a plan for a piece and am never sure where it will go. All of my work begins with one of my photos. I may have some idea what I would like to achieve but I simply keep experimenting to see what I can make happen. I do love working with textures. What does your art mean to you? Being able to express myself creatively and getting lost for hours and the satisfaction of blending nature, photography and art together as one and creating for myself and the joy it brings me. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? It has definitely pushed me to better myself and become more confident. It has taught me not to compare myself to others and do what you love whether anyone likes it or not. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? There are so many talented artists out there especially in the groups and that is one place I find a huge amount of inspiration. I have always loved using textures and there are many wonderful texture artists but Jai Johnson is one artist that has amazing textures that I am often drawn to in my work. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future ? What are your next steps? I would love to keep enhancing my skills to continue to create inspiring art work from what I feel passionate about. Maybe one day to be fortunate to have a display of my work.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION COMPOSITE COLOUR MATCHING By Andrew Haysom
When creating composites one of the things we need to do to make them believable and realistic is to try and match the colour of the inserted element to the colour of the background, there are many ways to do this, this article describes two of my favourite methods.
Using Curves and the White, Black and Grey Point Droppers 1.
Create a Curves Adjustment Layer and clip it to the layer containing the element being composited.
2.
You will now use the Set Black Point, Set Grey Point and Set White Point droppers (see Figure 1) to adjust the colours.
[Figure 1 – Curves Properties Panel]
128
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ....)
3.
Double-click the Set White Point dropper in the Curves dialog and the Colour Picker will appear. With the dropper, click the background image where you believe the white point is (the brightest part). When asked if you wish to “Set the new target colours as the defaults”, select “Yes”.
4.
Double-click the Set Black Point dropper in the Curves dialog and the Colour Picker will appear. With the dropper, click the background image where you believe the black point is (the darkest part). When asked if you wish to “Set the new target colours as the defaults”, select “Yes”.
5.
Double-click the Set Grey Point dropper in the Curves dialog and the Colour Picker will appear. With the dropper, click the background image where you believe the grey point is (closest to middle grey). When asked if you wish to “Set the new target colours as the defaults”, select “Yes”.
6.
Now select (single-click) the Set White Point dropper and click the layer containing the element being composited where you believe the white point is (the brightest part).
7.
Now select (single-click) the Set Black Point dropper and click the layer containing the element being composited where you believe the black point is (the darkest part).
8.
Now select (single-click) the Set Grey Point dropper and click the layer containing the element being composited where you believe the grey point is (the part closest to middle grey).
This will have shifted the luminosity and colours of your composited element much closer to the background. Be aware that you have changed the default target colour values for these droppers, to change them back simply repeat steps 3-5 above but rather than clicking in the image to select a colour choose black, white and middle grey (RGB 128,128,128) in the colour picker.
Using an “Average” Solid Colour Layer 1.
Duplicate your background layer.
2.
Use the Filter / Blur / Average command on this duplicate layer, you will get a solid colour that is the average of all the colours in the background.
3.
Drag this layer above your composited element layer and clip it to the composited element layer.
4.
Change the blend mode of the “average colour” layer to Soft Light. You can also try Overlay, Hard Light or Vivid Light for slightly different results.
You can also combine both of the methods above (i.e. do both of them) for some nice results. The above steps will need to be completed for each composited element in your image (if required).

Meet your artist Sue Maples Wollongong, NSW Australia
148
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. Hi, I live near Wollongong on the South Coast of NSW. We travel Australia caravaning a lot, and are on the road now for 4 months, this is when I build up my collections of photos of birds, native flowers and landscapes. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have been a scrapbooker for years and because we are often living for months in our van I transitioned to digital scrapbooking, and from Katie Pertiet’s site joined Sebastian’s Photo Artistry course in 2015, then Awake in 2016 and this year I am in Kaizen. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? Nature inspires my creations, and I do a lot of digi scrap with our grandchildren as the centre attraction. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? Yes, with my nature compositions and my family digital scrapping, it is often one of my latest photos that starts me off with ideas, then I begin with a background and build textures on this. Masks are my go to for making photo edging more interesting and then I build the compositions up from this base, with post processing to bring lighting in and boost photos. What does your art mean to you? My art is a significant outlet for my creative side and I thoroughly enjoy doing artistic designs that enhance my own photos. I do lots of other art works as well, including acrylic painting, sketching, mixed media canvases, etc. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? Yes, it has developed my skills in Photoshop heaps and I like the fact there is always something else to learn and have a go at, using what works for me within compositions. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from ? Over the years there have been lots of inspirational tutors. At the moment I am following Anna Aspnes’ style in my family digital ancestry albums that I have printed as photo books for gifts. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? What I hope to achieve is a collection of ‘albums’ both digital and photo books with stories interestingly intertwined with artsy photos for family and friends as keepsakes, even my nature scenes.

REDLANDS DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS By Maureen Maxwell

STAGE 2
Gerard Whelan
Maureen Maxwell
160
Our friend, and collaborator, Gerard Whelan started this month’s round off with a few rather different elements that opened up many possibilities. We had an opportunity to take the image in a number of directions. It could be turned into a dark, rather threatening type of image, or, a lighter, more whimsical and appealing image. It was my turn next, and I chose the latter approach. I added doves, fairies and other whimsical elements. And, Pam Hnderson turned it on its head and created the final wonderful, warm and interesting image you see here. I think this month’s collaboration clearly shows the wonderment of the endless possibilities digital artists have to work with. How fortunate we are to live in this digital world with the incredible technology we have that allows our imaginations and creativity to fly free. We hope you enjoy!

Meet your artist Robyn Jean Grace Garnet Somerset Region, QLD Australia
Website: www.facebook.com/artmrjg
180
Tell us a little about yourself and where you live. I am a creative living a life that is full. I work full-time and the rest of my time is spent with my Husband in a wonderful part of the Somerset Region in Queensland. A place where many go for holidays. Surrounded by farmlands, lakes, nature in all its glory which makes the daily commute to work all worth it. Both of us have at least a couple of creative projects on the go most of the time. How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry? I have always been creative; leatherwork, woodwork, carving, but I was drawing in graphite and colour pencils and decided I really wanted to use my own photography as reference. So I took up photography. I then had so very many photos sitting on my hard drive, too good to throw away, so with a nudge from my husband I started to play in PS. Where to begin? We then discovered online courses and how far I could actually push the craft and it excited me to continue to learn and develop my art. What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art? It could be the words of a song, a line from poetry, a feeling, something myself or someone I love is experiencing, a bird song or seriously, anything within Nature. Do you have a certain approach to creating your art? Sometimes an inspired idea or image will just appear in my imagination. Then the challenge is to find a way to bring that image to life. Othertimes I will start with an image that interests me and see where our travels take us. Often, it is nowhere near where I first imagined. What does your art mean to you? It is a passion, an outlet and a way to let others see the simple beauty surrounding us, or pass along the message that I am trying to lay out for them. Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how? I do think photography in general made me take more notice of everything around me; movement, light, habits and habitats of creatures. Photo artistry took me that one step further and made me notice every little thing down to the textures and the way we look at them. It also gave me a more surreal outlet whereas all my art to this point was mostly bordering on realism. Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from? First and foremost, my Husband. He invites me and pushes me to do more, my best and worst critic. All of the wonderful artists I see online each and every day, so creative and clever. Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps? I am always looking and learning and creating in new and different ways (to me). I do plan to create a website at some point and hope that I will find the time and courage to ‘put’ my art out there to a broader audience than just online as well.
