EDITOR’S MESSAGE
Happy Easter to everyone and welcome to the April edition of the Artists Down Under Magazine. A very special welcome to all our new “Down Under” members.
This month we see the Commonwealth Games take place on the Gold Coast, what a fantastic thing to take place in Australia. We wish all of our athletes the very best of luck. March was a very successful month for our “Down Under “ artists in global competitions and having images selected to appear in overseas magazines. A special congratulations also goes to Sue Masterton for taking out the Photo-Artistry UdA Award with her winning image “Zebras On The Move”. You can see all of Sue’s images on page’s 20-21.
Trish Hoskins introduces us to the very talented Designer Extraordinaire and someone we all admire - Anna Aspnes and shares with us some of her amazing images created from some of Anna’s kits. Once again we are enlightened with another rendition of the “Chinese Whispers” series from the Redlands Digital Artists Group - “Feel The Beat”. Andrew Haysom shares with us some of his Photoshop Inspirations and delves into Symmetry Painting.
Ann Wehner - T he Watchful O wl
Barbara Dudzinska shares with us a fascinating interview that she had with a very talented German artist, Scientist and Mathematician Irmtraud Astheimer. Finally I am delighted to introduce and feature to you four more our very talented artists - Barbara Dudzinska, Lyn Darlington, Dennis Rickard and Rochelle Marshall. Each month I am just amazed at the talent and success of our artists and very proud that I can share their journey with you. I hope you thoroughly enjoy this edition of “Artists Down Under” as much as I did putting it together for you. Stay safe and see you all next month.

Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge
Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Don’t worry about catching up, just jump in at the current week. Details at https://www.artbyjlm.com/art-of-birding-2018.html

WHAT’S ON Judi Lapsley Miller Birds On A Wire Exhibition Edges Art + Framing 9 April - 30 April 2018 4 Donnelly Street, Havelock North, New Zealand
Announcing “Birds on a Wire” - my new solo exhibition at Edges Art + Framing 9-30 April, featuring nineteen of my photo-artistic pictures, framed by the talented Edges team. Ranging from local kākā and tūī, to cockatoos and lorikeets from across the ditch, all the way round the world to toucanets from Ecuador, there is a bird for everyone! Prints will be available framed or unframed, in various sizes, on archival fine-art paper. And 10% of my proceeds will go to conservation projects, including Zealandia Ecosanctuary, World Parrot Trust, BirdLife Australia, and the American Bird Conservancy. Margaret Kalms Reflection Exhibition The Link 7 March - 17 April 2018 90 Stockdill Drive Holt, ACT 2615 The Marsden Art Group announce “Reflection” 7th March - 17th April 2018 in Ginninderrery, Holt, Canberra. Artists will explore meanings around literal reflections and reflecting upon ideas, thinking of the past or contemplating the meaning of life. Margaret is exploring meaning in an old abandoned house, contemplating who lived there and how their lives were lived. The wood is weathered and has warped leaving cracks and tactile textures for us to visually contemplate. A broken and displaced window pane represents lives disrupted and not fitting inside any more.

Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch. It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world.
I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting. Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board to work out how I could fit into their organization. In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org.
result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege. You can see my gallery of images at https:// worldpix.org/galleries-2/ Dean Hohn
My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a

ANNA ASPNES DIGITAL DESIGNER - EXTRAORDINAIRE By Trish Hoskin Here in my second piece on Digital Designers I have selected the amazingly talented Anna Aspnes of Anna Aspnes Designs. Anna hails from England and is now based in Colorado in the United States. Anna has her own website (links below) and her kits can be found at the Oscraps store. Anna’s contributions are wide and varied she not only teaches classes on design, composition and the ability to create fantastic digital scrapbooking pages but also creates themed training on a regular basis. Anna is very friendly and easy to approach and how she manages to be so prolific in providing new kits to her store, write blogs, keep up with social media sites, answer emails and create courses on such a regular basis not to mention bringing up a young family and managing a home is beyond me. But I am not complaining (although my bank balance does – hee hee!) as I cannot resist her fabulous kits. I have learnt so much from taking Anna’s various classes on Brush making, Art with text, A Year of ArtPlay to name a few. The classes are terrific in that they are always recorded given the time difference between the States and Australia. I have been lucky enough to sit in on some live ones thanks to a very accommodating boss. (Like having my lunch break at 9 o’clock in the morning!) Anna’s work is so varied in that you can purchase simple kits that include text based png files and squiggles and threads that just add to a piece of art with such class you wonder how you ever created pieces without them. Then there are her ArtPlay Palette kits that are a combination of beautiful papers, elements, brushes and coloured stains and overlays all in combinations of png files, jpg files, abr files and the Photoshop psd files. You can use the whole of the file or just specific layers that you want with the ability to rearrange move and resize as you wish. Some of the kits are fun and quirky and others just plain beautiful with rich gold flecks that make pieces created with them simply shine. All her kits are just so versatile and allow a user to manipulate in so many ways. She also offers limited commercial licences with her kits which is a real bonus when you want to create a flattened image using her pieces to sell (make sure you read the details carefully). Anna is also a good friend to our Awake and Kaizen group. She also generously adds a lot of tutorials to YouTube as do members of her Creative Team. If you are interested in any of her classes which I can highly recommend you can find the links to them at:

GOLDEN SUNSE T
I was introduced to various forms of art from an early age by my parents who were both architects. I followed my family tradition by choosing the same profession. Through my studies I learned the history of art and architecture, from ancient to classical and to contemporary. I also studied many forms of art including life drawing, quick ink sketches, different techniques and styles of painting as well as sculpture. Art was the predominant subject through all my life. I always have had a feel for composition, colours and perspective. I was also involved in Photography and I’ve been a member of Gold Coast Photographic Society for many years and it is my ongoing hobby When I retired, it created a huge emptiness with a big hole to fill in terms of creative expression. However, I was lucky I came across Sebastian Michaels’ “Photoshop Artistry” course. When I saw the images people were creating, I didn’t think twice. I knew that it was something I would love to learn. The course and what I learned was a continuation of my artistic beginning at the Uni and the rest of my professional life. It was this magic connection between my love of computers, art and photography. I hoped that one day I would be able to create beautiful images similar to what other students were creating. After I finished “Photoshop Artistry” course, I joined “Awake” and “Kaizen” and now I spend all my spare time on expressing my creations and visions. I am enjoying being part of our creative community and I love to create new images every day. I don’t have a definitive style but I love to create surrealistic, magical, not existing sceneries and also I love to follow Old Masters effects. My art can be viewed on my website
http://smartartplace.com/ and on my ArtBoja site https://artboja.com/art/7qn7s6/
In addition, I am very proud to have my own Art Book “Fine Art Metamorphosis” available on Issuu and Peecho.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SYMMETRY PAINTING By Andrew Haysom One of the new features introduced in Photoshop CC 2018 was Symmetry Painting. It is classed by Adobe as a Technology Preview, which means it is something they are trying out and if you want to play with it you have to go into your Photoshop preferences and turn it on. To turn on Symmetry Painting, follow these steps; 1. 2. 3.
Choose Photoshop CC / Preferences / Technology Previews Make sure the Enable Paint Symmetry check box is ticked Press OK
Figure 1 - Technology Preview Preferences
Once the option is enabled, you will notice a new little icon that looks like a butterfly in the Options Bar for the Brush tool. Clicking the icon reveals the Symmetry Painting menu.
Figure 2 - Symmetry Painting menu
Select one of the eight Symmetry Painting modes from the drop-down menu and Photoshop will create a path and the transform handles will be active. You can either press Enter (or click the tick mark in the Options Bar) to accept the path, or you can use the normal methods to transform the path (resize, rotate, warp, distort etc.). Notice in the Paths panel the new path has been created (in Fig 3, I chose the New Dual Axis symmetry painting option). Figure 3 - New Dual Axis symmetry path
50
SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..)
Now whenever I paint with the Brush tool, my paint strokes will be duplicated / reflected in the axis of symmetry defined by the path. Just have a play with this – you need to try it to see how it works. Please note that you can have multiple symmetry paths in any one document, and can choose which is active by selecting it in the Paths panel and then choosing Selected Path from the Symmetry Painting menu. You can also turn symmetry painting on or off, hide or show the symmetry path and activate the transform handles for the active symmetry path using the other options in the menu. You can use a normal hard/soft or painting style brush and paint freehand with this method, or my preference is to find a nice floral or fractal graphic brush and just use single-click strokes to make nice patterns with these. There are two extra “hidden” modes that are fun to play with too. These are Radial and Mandala mode. Radial mode will duplicate your paint strokes in a radial pattern, Mandala does the same but also adds in an extra rotated stroke for extra effect.
To activate one of these hidden modes; 1. Choose the New Dual Axis symmetry painting mode and press Enter to lock in the path. 2. Go to the Paths panel and double-click on the name of the path to edit the name. 3. Edit the name to either “Radial Symmetry x” or “Mandala Symmetry x” where x is a number that can be as high as 12.
Figure 4 - Mandala example In the example shown in Figure 4, I have used “Mandala Symmetry 8” and created the pattern shown with just 3 clicks of a free floral brush. The brush used is shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5 - Floral Brush Have a play with Symmetry Painting if you have Photoshop CC 2018, I’m sure you’ll have fun.

REDLANDS DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS By Maureen Maxwell
CHINESE WHISPERS #5 “FEEL THE BEAT”
STAGE 1
When I looked at the final image I was amazed at where Pam Henderson and Gerard Whelan had taken my original. And again, it was one of those moments when you look at it and think ‘what do I do with this one’. Pam was the sec ond person to work on this volley and Gerard finished it off. I had no idea what would happen with my fairly plain image that had a lot of negative space, but I have learnt from my two colleagues about how to ‘think outside the square’. It also seems to me that each month sees a steady improve ment in both quality and complexity. Working together is such fun plus the learning from each other never stops! We hope you are enjoying our collaborative efforts. Maureen Maxwell

Even though I am still a keen photographer I was getting to a point where I needed a different outlet for some of my images. Very much admired what other Artists were doing Digitally and wanted find out how they arrived at their final images. I then discovered Photoshop Artistry, so glad I did, the journey so far has been very much a course of learning, and applying the amazing techniques and processes to my work. Have so much more to learn and looking forward to it and becoming more adventurous with my work. Dennis Rickard

MY PASSION FOR AN ART WITH A DIFFERENCE By Barbara Dudzinska
An Interview with a great German Artist, Scientist and Mathematician Irmtraud Astheimer, well known by her artistic pseudonym Issabild or just Asti.
With recent introduction of Fractals by Sebastian Michaels to our group of artists I decided to add some more information about different types of art and how it’s created. Different people have a very different way of thinking when they create art. Most of us can visualise the idea in our brains before we start creating. Art creation is a process when we all have an idea and we use our knowledge and tools known to us to achieve the outcome we want. There are other artists who use different methods and different tools to create their vision. They create different type of art and their brain process numbers and formulas instead of images. Every part of an image has some coordinates and a location in a 2D or 3D space. Every colour or shade is represented by numbers. There are many mathematicians who are great artists but their way of creating art is so different to what we think when we create ours. They have a final vision as we have but when they think how to get there they think about numbers, mathematical formulas, programming scripts and so on, which they have to use to get their desired outcome. Their images are very different but composition and colours are always perfect. We use Photoshop and other softwares as a main tool to produce art from our photographs, we combine them with a lot of different elements and at the end we have our final image. We do everything visually. We use many different techniques, different plugins, and filters and so on but everything happens in front of our eyes and we accept the outcome or try more techniques sometimes start again to get final image close to what we had in our imagination. One day I came across different type of art with some beautiful images with mesmerising colours and composition. They were so different but for me so beautiful and creative. I was sure that I have to find out how this is created. I started to follow this type of art and artists and I learn that they are created by mathematicians and programmers. I was lucky to be able to contact German Artist, Scientist and Mathematician Irmtraud Astheimer or just Asti and learn from her how she is creating her beautiful unique images. She was so kind to share with me her knowledge and tricks and she become my on line teacher. Asti has a passion for creating endless art using different methods and different softwares. She creates fractals, flames, geometrical spheres and so on. She is also teaching mathematics, physics and computer science. Her website http://asti.vistecprivat.de is in German but you can find there many mathematical formulas, equations, source-codes or programming scripts, to create different types of objects like shapes, spheres and 3D planes and also some information how to change colours and reflection.
78
MY PASSION FOR AN ART WITH A DIFFERENCE (Cont....) Q
Asti, please explain to our readers how to create images like yours; they are so unique and beautiful? Which softwares do you use and where to find them?
A
Imagine, you use an object-oriented programming language like PoVRay, you have to create your own objects or you may use free objects included in the software. You take objects like camera, light-source, geometrical shapes and give them some properties like texture, size, and finish and so on. They can be rotated, translated, sized. If you want to create a picture of a pencil, you have to construct it by yourself. You begin with a box, you take the same box and rotate it, then take the intersection of the 1st one with the rotated one:intersection
box {<-1,0,-1> <1,7,1>}, box {<-1,0,-1> <1,7,1> rotate <0,45,0>}
You then choose a texture and a finish and add a little cone on the top of the intersection and then you start making pictures with it like the follow ing:
In the following picture you just take some spheres with different textures and sizes, you then add a reflecting plane with a surface that is not perfectly flat, you use black as background color and the image is ready, Of course you have to add a camera and at least one light-source too.
To create this picture I was using PovRay programming platform, where using scripting language I had to place some spheres on a black plane, which has a reflecting finish. I had to add position, size and texture of the spheres. It’s just a simple few lines of programming language bellow: #declare PIGMENT= pigment {function {abs(y)} color_map {[0.01 0.35 color White*1.5 color White*1.5] [0.35 1.00 color Black color Black]} } sphere {<-8,2,5> 2 pigment {PIGMENT }} and this source-code will give you a black-and-white-striped sphere of size 2 positioned at the coordinates xyz = -8,2,5 The plane has a so-called “normal-vector”, which means, that it’s not completely plane.
You can download PovRay software for free from http://www.povray.org/download/ and you can get a lot of free scripts to get started. It’s a lot of fun to learn. You can also find a lot of examples and exercises on my website http://asti.vistecprivat.de/hp/galerien/gindex.html.
79
MY PASSION FOR AN ART WITH A DIFFERENCE (Cont....)
Another example are spirals, they were created using so-called loops: union{ #while(i<50) object {wuerfel_01 pigment {Quartz*1.1} translate <0,0,i/5> rotate <0,0,7*i> } #declare i=i+1; #end }//end union In this case the object wuerfel_01 is just a box.
I’m also creating 3D objects called “knots” using software Knotplot. The 1st of the following images is made with Knotplot together with PovRay. The formula for the 2nd picture is taken from software called Surfer:
https://imaginary.org/de/program/surfer. The next images are made with PovRay only.
80
MY PASSION FOR AN ART WITH A DIFFERENCE (Cont....)
I’m also using Apophysis, so-called “Chaos-game” to create so-called “flames”. Then I use Ultrafractal to create fractals. The help-system of Ultrafractal is in English and many formulas are build in into the software for public use.
The little umbrellas are made using “intersection”, “difference” and “union” of ready-made objects of PovRay. Pictures with fractals are using self-similarity. Some great examples of fractals in nature are leaves of fern or broccoli, sunflower seeds or eye structure of some reptiles and insects. This self-similarity is translated in a special formula to get images with infinitive multiplications. Asti, thanks for your fantastic information and thanks to all readers for your interest in this subject. Creating images using mathematics, programming and scripts is so fascinating. It’s a great challenge to achieve your first image but its worth to try. All images courtesy of Irmtraud Astheimer. Barbara Dudzinska

I’m a passionate nature photographer and digital artist from the Central Coast, NSW, Australia. I have a natural flare for creativity dabbling into many creative hobbies from a very early age. My true talent began about 8 years ago when my love of photography, nature and wildlife integrated together as one. Over the years I have had the opportunity to attend many workshops to enhance my creative inspirations. I enjoy working with photoshop and other various software. I have been fortunate enough to travel around the world to destinations such as Botswana, Italy, Greece and many other amazing places throughout Europe, which has allowed me to capture hidden treasures of the world. My current inspiration is drawn from the wildlife of Africa from my most recent travels and now locally back home on our farm I am also inspired by the beauty of nature with the change of seasons and my love of animals. My work can be viewed through my website where you can also get in touch with me at www.sabvaningphotoart.com Lyn Darlington

T I F FA N Y
All of my life, art, in one form or another has featured. I remember as kids, my two younger sisters and I were gifted every Christmas with a treasure trove of pens, pencils, colouring in books and art supplies. Couple this with growing up with an exotic range of parrots and various other animals, my love of all things nature and animals features in a lot of my art. Two major events in the last couple of years have lead me right to where I am today , and why, you sit here now reading this. The first, the gift of Sapphire. Sapphire, my almost 13 year old Dobermann. The catalyst for my first DSLR purchase late December 2016 has changed the path of my life in a way I never expected. Often you hear people say, once you view the world through a viewfinder your whole world changes- and that it does. Truly. The first click of the shutter and my world changed. Dark Sapphire Pet Photography was born and over the last two years I have found my focus slowly featuring more and more Photoshop work. Never really being completely happy with my images I found my imagination wandering often, and breaking “the rules of photography” (rules schmules) Once I had my first taste of composite work and Digital Artistry my fate was sealed.. even if I didn’t know it at the time. The decision in 2018 to join Photoshop Artistry and consequently AWAKE and Artists Down Under has had a profound impact, finally, I had found what felt like home! What does the future look like? It is my intention to put more emphasis on animals/nature and the impact we as humans have on these things. And to have a whole lot of fun using my imagination along the way. I do hope you will follow along on this wild ride with me! Rochelle Marshall
