EDITOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the August edition of our Artists Down Under magazine. I am happy to present to you another edition of outstanding art and of course the artists amazing achievements for the month. This month we delve a little deeper into the Art Of Birding Wildlife and Nature Photography Challenge that Judi Lapsley Miller has been conducting throughout 2018, and show off some of the very talented photographers’ images. Trish Hoskin interviews the ever popular Mike Goldner from Artisan HD (we know it as Artboja), and he gives us an insight into how it all began and what they offer. The Redlands Digital Artists Group’s Collaborations delight us once again with another of their Chinese Whispers series; this month’s theme is called “Landscapes And Ghosts”. After the meetup of four of our Artists Down Under members recently they

present us with one of the ideas that was tossed around on the day: “The Teapot Challenge”. Andrew Haysom once again presents to us another of his fantastic Photoshop Training Guides with handy tips on Brushes.

Ilona Abou-Zolof - Beauty From The Past

Barbara Dudzinska introduces us to one of the ways she is successful at selling her art and that is through “Print On Demand”; a very interesting read. We introduce to you another four very talented artists as this month’s Feature Artists - Gerard Whekan, Sonia Pusey, Ann Wehner and Dean Hohn. I am sure you will enjoy and appreciate their fantastic work.

I hope you enjoy this month’s edition of “Artists Down Under”. Stay safe and see you all next month.

Digital Art links the Care For Africa Foundation with WorldPix.org! Never think for a minute people don’t take notice of your art and what you’re doing. Especially if it’s for a good cause! I got noticed by Mike Goldner, at ArtisanHD, from my ArtBoja page, who in turn told Paul Lynch, the founder of WorldPix.org about the work I was doing with the Care For Africa Foundation, raising funds for drilling fresh water wells. Thank you Mike Goldner for passing my information on to Paul Lynch.

It is coming up 12 months ago that Paul first contacted me to see if I would be interested in joining their group, who are doing similar work to what I’m doing for the Care For Africa Foundation, in various locations around the world. I said yes and filled out the application form, but I didn’t really meet the requirements of their organization because I have never been to Tanzania and therefore couldn’t provide images of the people or animals from the villages we are supporting.

Dean L Hohn My dream is to visit the Tarime District of Tanzania and spend time with the villagers and attempt to capture their stories and include them in my gallery. The Care For Africa Foundation, that I am raising funds for is based in Launceston, Tasmania. As a result of not having been to Tanzania, the board of WorldPix has been gracious enough to allow me to use my digital art images from around Tasmania, until such time as I’m able to actually visit Tanzania. I thank them for this privilege.

Combine that with the fact I did digital art instead of straight photography and it took a bit for the board You can see my gallery of images at https:// to work out how I could fit into their organization. worldpix.org/galleries-2/ In the end, we have overcome the hurdles and I am delighted to be a member of WorldPix.org. WATER FROM ART As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help. It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no. The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation. My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw

I also do custom designs and if you would like something created especially for you, you can contact me at dean.hohn@bigpond.com and I will be glad to discuss it with you. The scarves are available in Modal, Cashmere Modal, Cashmere Silk and 100% Cashmere. If you find a design you would like in a fabric other than shown, please contact me and I’ll add it and let you know when it’s available to order. I’m truly grateful for the support I’ve received to date and would appreciate any support you can give me in the future. Dean L Hohn Below are samples of some of my latest designs.

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help. I create expressive photoart to raise awareness, and host events and sell products to raise money for endometriosis research. Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations and procedures simply to function normally. An estimated 1,750,000 women worldwide are affected by endometriosis! An estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heart-breaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving these women vulnerable to poverty.

We collaborate at the photo session, agreeing which ideas we’ll play with. My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth of the experiences of women with endometriosis. The women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like I want my photoart to become visual screams!! See ‘Life with Endometriosis’ photoart here:

I hosted a function recently where I showed a selection of my images from ‘Life with Endometriosis’ and several ‘EndoWomanArt’ designs were modelled. Products were on display for sale and we had an auction of donated gift vouchers. Our community responded enthusiastically and gave generously. To continue to create an income, I’ve created ‘EndoWomanArt’ with Redbubble where my photoart is printed on clothing, stationary and household goods.I’m donating 50% my of profit to endometriosis research! This is an increase in my donations! Share ‘EndoWomanArt’ with your friends on social media to raise money for women’s health!

I joined Awake in order to gain advanced Photoshop http://www.endowomanart.com skills, specifically to create these imaginative I passionately desire to raise money for research images. so that faster diagnoses are made and more I create photoart inspired by what women with effective treatments are found. Women with endometriosis have told me. Art of Birding 2018 Wildlife & Nature Photography Challenge

Join Judi on a year-long weekly photography challenge, designed especially for nature and wildlife photographers. Storytelling, wildlife advocacy, and creative/artistic photography is where her heart is, and she hopes to encourage more photographers and photo-artists to not just stop at the perfect wild life picture but to take it further. These weekly challenges will encourage you to think about how your images can be composed and used to advocate for our precious wildlife (story), to hook the viewer in with compelling, creative images (creative), and to increase your technical skills and development (technical). She has created each challenge so that most people can participate, regardless of skill level or where you live in the world (though you will notice a New Zealand bias!). Most challenges can be achieved with just a camera phone. Don’t worry about catching up, just jump in at the current week. From amateurs with just a cellphone to professionals with the latest gear, the participants in the AoB photo challenge bring many and varied perspectives to the weekly challenges. The challenges are designed to develop skills for wildlife and nature advocacy through visual storytelling, creativity and learning new photographic techniques. If you want to start using your photography for good causes, do join us. Details at https://www.artbyjlm.com/art-of-birding-2018.html

16

Week 31: negative space (technical) Frame your subject so that there is distraction-free space in part of the image. If you’re interested in using your images for advocacy purposes, negative space allows room for messages and branding. Bonus challenge: add words to your image in the negative space to advocate for something important to you.

Week 32: outside the fence (story) For those of us with a connection to the fenced sanctuary Zealandia, “outside the fence has a very literal meaning. Zealandia has become a safe incubator for breeding birds, who then spill out over the fence to live in local backyards and gardens. For everyone else, find a local conservation or restoration initiative and tell the story about how they have had an impact outside their range.

Week 33: feathers (creative) Feathers lend themselves to artistic shots. Just be sure to leave behind any feather you gather as birds rely on feathers to line their nests, etc. (plus it is illegal to take feathers of native birds).

Week 34: bokeh/background blur (technical) You can either use a wide aperture to create a shallow depth of field or ensure the background is at a distance to your subject to throw the background into blur or soft bokeh to make your subject pop.

Week 35: camouflage (creative) Many critters use camouflage to hide from predators. The first challenge is finding them, the second is to then photograph them in a compelling way

During our visit to Montana and Wyoming a few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of visiting Yellowstone National Park. In the early 1800’s, there were millions of bison spread across our plains. By the time this particular area officially became a National Park in 1872, the bison were hunted almost to extinction, and in 1890, fewer than 1,000 were counted in our newly fledged National Park. Through heavy management since the 1930’s, they have made a come back within the park, and there are currently approximately 5,000 bison who call Yellowstone home. They co-exist (more or less) peacefully with our current tourist trade within the park, as long as people are respectful and keep their distance. Bison have the right of way!

Congratulations to

JACK MACKENZIE for receiving A GOLD Place in the Students Category competition for his image “Fruity As”. Jack was also awarded a SILVER Place for his image “Lake Taupo II”.

Fruity As

Lake Taupo II

Jack’s two images were awarded Gold (Fruity As) and Silver (Lake Taupo II) respectively. It was the only Student Category Gold and one of only 25 across the entire competition. As a result he was nominated as a finalist in the Student Category and at the gala awards dinner was named as the winner. Some background about the creation of these images from Jack himself: The backstory is that after three years of only moderate success at NZIPP with sports-photography style images I knew I needed to do something different if I was to do better. I was prepared to bomb out completely and so had no reason to be safe and conservative. The first one I call ‘Lake Taupo II’ in reference to German photographer Andreas Gursky’s ‘Rhein II’. I had been reviewing Gursky’s work to see what all the fuss was about. Some of his work is very busy but Rhein II has an elegant simplicity. Driving home from a sports shoot in Taupo I saw the perfectly still lake shrouded in mist. I jumped out the car, used the bonnet to steady myself and took a dozen shots, one of which I split into two. The images themselves were only lightly edited. The rest was about creating a sense of tension with the proportions of the diptych and the framing relative to the horizon. It takes Rhein II’s simplicity and pushes it further. The other image is cheekily called ‘Fruity As’. This one was inspired by the work of Swiss German artist Paul Klee, whose work on colour was fundamental and extensive. Taking the principles I saw in ‘Pyramid” and ‘Polyphon gefasstes Weiss’ (both 1930) I wanted to do something different and create a discord among the judges. I found a model who was up to the task. The rest was purely experimental, in particular how to blend the colours to create the end result. There was no specific goal in mind, I just kept adjusting the direction based on what worked and what didn’t. The fruity appearance was serendipitous, but once I noticed it, I just pushed the image along in that direction.

ARTISAN HD INTERVIEW By Trish Hoskin At a recent get together in Launceston a group of the Awake artists sat and discussed our work that we had added to the Art Boja site. Some of us had not promoted our work there well and so I decided to talk to the people at Artisan HD who host the site to get a bit of a background into the company and some ideas on how we might push ourselves to promote our work further in the United States as well where obviously the population is much larger. So Mike Goldner kindly provided the following information about the company and some tips for us. Made up of three entities, we are Artisan Colour Inc., ArtisanHD.com and ArtBoja. ArtisanHD is our direct to consumer site, hosted / located in Scottsdale, Arizona. For over eight years, ArtisanHD.com has had the privilege of printing for artists, designers, professional photographers and photo enthusiasts alike. We have seen some amazing talent come to us for expertly-crafted digital print solutions. We are pleased to offer the same top quality, award-winning fine art printing solutions that we offer our corporate clients at Artisan Colour. Our wide variety of materials and photo finishing are geared toward professional and amateur photographers, interior designers, or everyday people looking for a great gift or memory to hang on the wall. Our best in class photographic and printing equipment allows the recreational artist access to the same tools, materials, and craftsmanship that professional photographers utilize to make stunning museum quality masterpieces. The next frontier for us has always been out there, visible, but slightly out of reach. How could we connect lovers of fine art, interior designers and people with a discerning eye for color, composition and design, with some of the great talent we already support? The answer grew, as most great ideas do, from an organic collaboration. We were introduced to Sebastian Michaels, the visionary behind such leading publications as Living the Photo Artistic Life and Quill and Camera. Sebastian’s depth of creativity is only rivaled by his unending encouragement and support for his on-line community members and Photoshop Artistry courses such as Fine Art Grunge Composition, Photoshop Artistry and his more advanced AWAKE course. As luck would have it, one of our tenured employees and Photoshop World Guru Award Winner, Paul Bartell, signed up for the Fine Art Grunge Composition course. Within just a few days he shared his excitement and explained the wealth of support, including course materials such as textures and brushes. Soon he was eagerly developing some of his own creations. For a guy who works on expertly retouching high-end fashion photography assets all day, wanting to come home and fire up Photoshop for another 3-4 hours really said how special this course was!

38

ARTISAN HD INTERVIEW (Cont ....) This is where the ownership group and our talented in-house Technology Team stepped up and decided to invest. After many weeks of collaborative discussion and late night emails, crackling with ideas and concepts, we arrived at what is now ArtBoja.com. The name, (pronounced ART BOJAH) is derived from the Bosnian word BOJA, meaning COLOUR, dye or pigment. Everything here at Artisan Colour is based on the most accurate output and reproduction of any image we handle. ArtBoja is a fitting nod to our 20-year legacy of retouching, color managing, pre-press and digital output. We invited a core group of Artists from the AWAKE Course to start uploading their digital creations so we could start the design of the interface and the individual member “Gallery Homepages. What started with (4) artists and about 45 images, has now grown to an amazing international collection of art, hosting over 1000 artists with an astonishing 10000+ original works. We also encourage our members to actively promote their Portfolio pages on Social Media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest etc. Getting traffic to YOUR page is paramount for sale conversions. The site has over 10,000 images, so the faster a potential buyer lands on your IMGAGE page, the more likely that they will buy YOUR art. (direct Link Example: https://artboja.com/art/726rzm/17207.php )

We also recommend drafting email blasts to potential customer groups, such as Interior Designers, Galleries and the Hotel & Healthcare industries. Building your email lists can be time consuming, but targeted promotions tend to have more traction, then generic posts. In the near future, ArtBoja will be working on an internal promotional push that may be membership / fee based. By opting in to this service, you will be able to take advantage of our promotional efforts as we highlight artists, send out newsletters on the latest arrivals, top views etc. So lots of interesting information and some great tips here for us all. Trish Hoskin

My name is Gerard Whelan My first camera was a Canon Ixus 2 mega pixel. I was so impressed with digital photography and when I uploaded the photos to my computer for the first time, I knew I was hooked. Here I am several years later and still discovering and learning this great subject. I love shooting nature in all its guises, especially wildlife. I began practicing Digital Artistry almost two years ago, through “My Photo Artistic Life, beginning with the Photoshop Artistry course. I find myself going back to it time and time again and picking up something new each time. The great thing about these courses is that you have lifetime access to them online. Sebastion Michaels is the course provider who just keeps on giving. I hope to continue with it from here and see if I can fine tune my Artistry to a Professional level. Gerard Whelan

REDLANDS DIGITAL ARTISTS GROUP A COLLABORATIVE GROUP OF PHOTO ARTISTS By Maureen Maxwell

CHINESE WHISPERS #9 “LANDSCAPES & GHOSTS”

STAGE 1

FINAL STAGE

STAGE 2

This month we have produced a collaboration that is quite different from our joint attempts in the past, and to my eye the final version looks most interesting and tells a very good story. I started this month off with a landscape from the South Island of New Zealand just near Arthur’s Pass, plus a few additions. It had autumn colours and a river running through, plus the background was a blue hazy range of hills. I was told by my two colleagues that it was definitely one of those “OH! NO” moments. Gerard Whelan went next and added his own take on a ‘Ghostly Landscape’, and when he finished it looked just about complete with a lot of added elements, etc. And then it was Pam Henderson’s turn! Pam applied her wonderful knowledge, and skill, to end up with the wonderful work of art you can see on this page. The outcome of these monthly challenges, and collaborations, is both a learning opportunity and one of sharing a friendship. Generally each of us has a very different style, so combining our skills, and creativity, ends up as a very enjoyable surprise. We hope you enjoy!

LET IT GO

SHADOWS OF MY MIND My photography journey began in January 2016 when I joined a Photo a Day facebook group taking photos with my phone. Three months later I bought my first ever camera, a Nikon D3300 which I still use today. From then on I became obsessed with taking photos. I especially loved fine art photography and often wondered “How do they do that?”. The day I discovered Brooke Shaden’s White Wall Wednesday series on YouTube was a huge revelation to me. I promptly subscribed to Photoshop and went about learning (via free YouTube videos) EVERYTHING I could. It was a very tedious and frustrating process. Until one day I saw a beautiful image advertising Sebastian Michaels’ Fine Art Grunge course and I thought to myself “I want to learn how to do that”. So I signed up and in January 2018 I joined the AWAKE course run by Sebastian Micheals. I am drawn to images that tell a story or make me feel something. I also LOVE surreal art. I am very new to the photographic artistic world and am having so much fun discovering amazing artists I never knew existed. My artistic “crushes” at the moment are Maggie Taylor, Mark Ryden, Kelly Robitaille, Catrin Welz-Stein, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Christian Schloe and all things “Pop Surrealism Lowbrow Art”. I am originally from Adelaide, South Australia but now live with my husband and family in Perth, Western Australia.

ADU MEMBERS THE TEAPOT CHALLENGE By Maureen Maxwell On Monday 11th June, four Artists Down Under (ADU) members met for lunch. Jacquie Goss and her husband, Ned, (from Melbourne) were holidaying in Noosa and came down to Brisbane to catchup with other photo artistry enthusiasts. Phillipa Frederiksen, and her husband Gunnar, came up from the Gold Coast to join Pam Henderson and Maureen Maxwell so we could spend time with Jacquie and Ned. What a wonderful opportunity to spend a few hours sharing our thoughts on leading the ‘Photo Artistic Life’ and to talk over ideas and interests! The cafe where we met use a beautiful range of artistic tea pots which we all commented on, and we then started taking photos of various examples scattered around the different tables. From that we laughingly created a ‘Tea Pot Challenge’. We hope you like the results of what we have come up with!

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

I had dabbled in acrylic painting at school as a teenager but never really got into it, after I discovered basketball which then became my passion. As an adult I revisited my acrylic painting after a knee replacement laid me up for six weeks and I got bored with watching TV and reading. I soon discovered however, that my arthritic hands did not like holding the brushes for too long and I found myself looking for another hobby. I was given Photoshop as a present but had no idea what the potential of this program was until after I stumbled across Sebastian Michaels’ Photoshop Artistry course and then onto his AWAKE course. I soon discovered a new passion creating stories that I had seen in my mind’s eye and making them come to life for the viewer to make their own narrative. Creating art is my daily passion and I am continuing to learn my craft with new techniques and I have recently started using my own Photographs in my art pieces. Once competent with my camera I eventually aim to take my own model shots to use. Website: http://www.annwehnerdigitalartistry.com

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION SOME BRUSH TOOL TIPS By Andrew Haysom

Switching the Brush Mode between Normal and Overlay Switching the Brush tool to Overlay blend mode is very handy for refining and cleaning up layer masks. When in Overlay blend mode a white brush will affect lighter pixels (those that are lighter than 50% grey) but will not affect darker pixels, similarly when in Overlay mode a black brush will affect darker pixels (those that are darker than 50% grey) but will not affect lighter pixels. With the Brush tool active use these shortcuts to switch the Brush blend mode between Overlay and Normal; Shift+Option(Alt)+N – switch to Normal mode Shift+Option(Alt)+O – switch to Overlay mode

Understand the Size of the Brush Cursor When in normal mode (that is the Preferences / Cursors / Painting Cursors setting is set to Normal Brush Tip) be aware that when using a soft brush the brush tool will affect areas outside of the circle you see when you paint. When painting with a hardness of 0%, so as soft a brush as you can get, the edge of the circle represents the point where the brush feathering reaches 50% opacity. If you select Full Size Brush Tip the circle shows the whole area that can be affected by the brush. That is the edge of the circle shows where the opacity of the brush feathering reaches 0%. Obviously when using a hard brush, i.e. hardness at 100%, these two settings make no difference. When the [Caps Lock] key is on the brush cursor will change for the selected cursor to the cross-hair. Release [Caps Lock] to change it back. Remember you can use the square bracket keys [ and ] to reduce and increase brush size, and holding down the [Shift] key while using them will reduce and increase the brush hardness.

98

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION (Cont ..)

The Difference Between Opacity and Fill Brush Opacity defines the maximum amount of paint that can be laid down in one brush stroke (mouse click). Fill defines the rate at which paint is laid down as you paint. With the brush tool activated you can use the number keys to change the Opacity setting 0 = 100%, 1 = 10%, 2 = 20%,, etc. If you want a more precise setting tap two number keys in quick succession, for example tapping the 4 quickly followed by the 5 will give you 45% opacity. Hold down the [Shift] key and use the same number key techniques to change the Flow setting.

The Behind and Clear Blend Modes There are two blend modes that are available only on the tool blend mode drop-down on the Options Bar and not in the Layer blend mode. These are Behind and Clear. These define how the brush responds to transparent pixels on the layer you are working on. If the transparency of the current layer is locked these options will be greyed out on the drop-down menu. The Behind blend mode will cause the brush to only paint on transparent pixels on the layer. The Clear blend mode will make all the painted pixels transparent.

GOLD RUSH I classify myself as a fine art photographer and I live on the North Central Coast of Tasmania. I draw inspiration from nature for my art. I think that the interplay of light on nature’s shapes, textures, colours and patterns is the single biggest influence on my art. I am continuing my studies and exploring various types of photography and processing to further enhance the photo artistry and depth of my pieces. I use my art in creation of a clothing collection with VIDA, that is based in California and provides basic numeracy and literacy skills to people in locations that create the products for the collection. I donate all proceeds from the sale of items in my collection to the Care For Africa Foundation to assist with drilling fresh water wells in Tanzania. You can view the entire collection at https://tinyurl.com/yc5ar9gw I have my works in private collections around Australia, Tasmania and overseas in the USA. I feel very honoured to have been chosen as a 2014 and 2016 John Glover Art Prize finalist. I have been chosen by WorldPix.Org as one of their artists and have a gallery of images available for purchase or where donations can be made to assist the Care For Africa Foundation. You can view my gallery at https://worldpix.org/galleries-2/ I have 3 different galleries that represent my work across Tasmania and you can see more of my work at Dean Hohn-Photo Artistry https://tinyurl.com/ybuoo5fz

PRINT ON DEMAND By Barbara Dudzinska What marketing options we have? We all know that digital art is a fantastic new type of art and we all enjoy our creation process. Unfortunately it’s not wildly accepted type of art. A lot of art galleries are refusing to accept digital prints on their exhibitions. I already wrote an article in Artist Down Under Magazine in January 2018, about painting and building textures over the print to make a mix media artwork and to try to be easier accepted by galleries. That is just one way around the problem...... In my opinion we should start to accept that maybe our art can serve a different purpose. Our art not necessary have to be hang on the wall but can be used many other ways and on many other products. For many years images were used for advertising and that didn’t change, it’s a booming business today too but the media have change. Images are still in big demand by advertisers, by web companies and product makers. We have to start thinking outside the box how to get people know that we are producing great images. There are many ways to build a name and start to be visible on many platforms. It’s a lot of work but it’s worth to consider. Some people have their own websites to show their portfolio or even to sell but it’s very difficult to get enough traffic to really sell. Exhibitions are great but it’s very expensive and time consuming to prepare enough images to make a statement about our work. Usually we are lucky if we sell something. Other option is to sell your art through “print on demand” services online. I did try many of them, it’s not easy to sell, there is a huge competition and your commission is very small but in most cases it doesn’t cost you anything to participate. They manage all aspects of marketing, production, distribution and customer service. I use this business model for long time and I’m very happy with the results I’m achieving. After initial time where I had to use any possible way to show my products in front of others I’m finally achieving steady sales. I’m building my collections with the same design printed on many different products and I realise that buyers are happy to collect sets of goods with the same design. I build my collections using different themes and post collections on Pinterest for extra exposure. Some examples of my collections.

They have printing facilities in many countries around the world including Australia and NZ. I can post all links on our Facebook page for everybody to try.
